Law & Order: SVU Spanks Fifty Shades of Grey Author E.L. James

This week television’s probing procedural Law & Order: SVU ripped inspiration from the headlines — or rather, the bestseller list — with a case involving the assault of the author of a Fifty Shades of Grey -style novel. (Starring My Girl ‘s Anna Chlumsky!) But what’s the takeaway here? What’s L&O:SVU really trying to say to  E.L. James ? Chlumsky guest-starred as Jocelyn Paley, a successful writer whose bondage-fantasy lit phenomenon, 25 Acts , has burned its way up the charts. “Her book makes Fifty Shades look like a Disney story,” explains talk show host Adam Cain (Roger Bart), who then takes fantasies straight from Paley’s book over the rape-y line. As they do each week, the L&O:SVU crew then sets out to seek justice. But there’s a twist! (Uh, spoilers.) Paley’s not the real author of the kinky Fifty Shades stand-in, but has instead claimed credit and made a fortune off of someone else’s writing. Plagiarism: Another shade of grey! (Ok, not really.) In real life, James has tread both moral grounds. As  Fifty Shades  blazed a kinky trail through the suburbs and lady lit world, critics claimed its depictions of the BDSM community are off-base and promote regressive gender politics. Is protagonist Ana Steele an agent of her own sexual awakening or a pathetic young woman submitting herself to the irresistibly damaged Christian Grey ? The twisty question of authorship put on blast by L&O:SVU also has roots in James’ phenomenal success. First penned and shared online (for free!) as Twilight fan fiction — minus the supernatural stuff, but with all of the emotional desperation — Fifty Shades of Grey became a commercial property when James stopped going by her message-board friendly AKA Snowqueens Icedragon, re-named her characters to avoid copyright infringement, and turned her lusty fanfic into a book . So what’s going on here, L&O ? Does James owe more of a debt than she acknowledges to Twilight and the fan community that once welcomed her as their own? Are there repercussions to cashing in as James did without giving proper credit? Are the  Law & Order  writers not entirely objective in their deliciously entertaining, headline-ripping yarn-spinning ? Recall that cutting Law & Order: Criminal Intent episode inspired by Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark featuring Cynthia Nixon as a wacko drunk Julie Taymor doppelganger?  Yeah, not judgmental at all. I do hope that the producers of the in-development  Fifty Shades of Grey movie take note of this L&O: SVU episode and, in some way, acknowledge the meta-fictional incest loop of it all, because by the time the film spanks its way into theaters we’ll have dissected James’ novel — and the phenomenon surrounding it — every which way already. And if the big-screen adaptation is just a straight, lightly erotic retelling of Ana and Christian’s kinky courtship it’ll all seem so… vanilla . Oh, and one more thing:  When will Richard Belzer record his  Fifty Shades of Grey celebrity narration? Watch the full episode online here and wonder how long all this will be relevant as the  Fifty Shades of Grey movie keeps chugging along. Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Nicole Kidman Speaks on Keith Urban, Sexual Freedom

Nicole Kidman is no longer the shy woman of her youth. She makes that very clear in a new interview with Harper’s Bazaar . Asked about husband/ American Idol judge Keith Urban, the actress tells the magazine: “He just gave me confidence through just being very kind to me and understanding me, opening me up to trying things.” Such as? “My sexuality, those sorts of things.” Oh. Okay then. Elsewhere, the Oscar winner touches on fashion, pregnancy talk and, of course, Tom Cruise: On her personality when married to Cruise : “In those early years, it was like, ‘I’m here and I’m clutching onto your arm, and it all feels a little overwhelming and really strange. And I was shy. Deeply shy. I didn’t feel comfortable at all. But I felt very comfortable at home.” On body image and pregnancy rumors : “All of that other stuff becomes less important. Like, I’ve always had a little belly. I mean, now that I’m 45, they don’t say, ‘Oh, she’s pregnant!’ as much. But I’ve got skinny arms and legs, and then I’ve got a little belly.” On red carpet fashion : “I make sure to wear comfortable dresses because I want to be able to go out afterward and, you know, bend.”

Fifty Shades of Grey Movie Hires … Screenwriter Kelly Marcel!

The Fifty Shades of Grey movie announced a key player today. Sadly, it’s not the actors cast as Christian or Ana, but screenwriter Kelly Marcel will play a huge role in bringing the erotic young adult novel trilogy to life. Marcel was the creator of Terra Nova and penned the new Disney film Saving Mr. Banks , which stars Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson and Colin Farrell. The Fifty Shades of Grey movie offers quite a departure from that in terms of subject matter, but producers Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti lauded her abilities. ” Kelly’s work demonstrates her flawless structural technique and passionate commitment to emotion, humor and depth of character,” De Luca said in a press release. Brunetti adds, “We were all taken with the depth and passion of Kelley’s engagement with the characters and world E.L. James created … we knew she was the right person.” Speculation over who the right person is for the lead, billionaire character and his young female paramour has run rampant online for months on end. Just a few of those recently rumored for the respective, racy roles: Ryan Gosling, Lucy Hale, Emma Watson, Matt Bomer and Alexis Bledel . None have been cast … yet. Who’s your dream Fifty Shades duo? 50 Shades Of Grey Hires Saving Mr Banks Writer (Tom Hardy For Christian Grey, Anyone?)

The kinky erotic pop phenomenon 50 Shades of Grey has finally landed — or shall we say, tied down — a writer! British actress/scribe Kelly Marcel, who co-created the short-lived Steven Spielberg-produced series Terra Nova and scripted the upcoming Mary Poppins pic Saving Mr. Banks , will adapt E.L. James’ S&M romance about a young woman who falls for Christian Grey , a damaged dreamboat with a bondage fetish. Marcel’s a surprise choice for the hot property given her relatively scant writing credits; here’s hoping her script keeps all the salaciously sexy allure of the books, which will be one of the bigger challenges Universal and Focus face with their big-screen adaptation. One hurdle: Making a 50 Shades of Grey movie that’s half as great as this fan-made trailer : Oh, man. Never gets old . Once a script’s in place, the next trick will be casting their perfect Christian Grey . Someone not too old, not too young, the picture of male perfection and virility. An actor capable of pulling off both brute sensual dominance and crippling emotional trauma. A dude who knows how to wear a suit. Well, Marcel did co-found a theater company with Tom Hardy after the two worked together on Nicholas Refn’s Bronson , which she re-wrote. (Another fun fact: Dad Terry Marcel wrote and directed 1980’s Hawk the Slayer .) Maybe she can make a phone call… who’s down with casting Tom Hardy as Christian Grey? The official press release: UNIVERSAL CITY, CA, October 8, 2012—Universal Pictures and Focus Features today announced that Kelly Marcel will write the screenplay to the highly anticipated film adaptation of “Fifty Shades of Grey.” Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti will produce the film based on E L James’ #1 bestselling book, alongside James. The announcement was made by Universal Pictures Co-Chairman, Donna Langley and Focus Features’ Chief Executive Officer, James Schamus. Marcel wrote the 2011 Black List script, Saving Mr. Banks , the story of Walt Disney’s twenty-year pursuit of the film rights to author P.L. Travers’ novel, “Mary Poppins,” and the rocky relationship that formed between the two. The film is currently in production at Walt Disney Studios starring Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson and Colin Farrell with John Lee Hancock directing. Marcel served as the co-creator and executive producer of the Amblin/FOX-TV series Terra Nova, for which she wrote the series’ pilot episode. She will also produce The Madonnas Of Echo Park for HBO. “Kelly’s work demonstrates her flawless structural technique and passionate commitment to emotion, humor and depth of character which is particularly visible in the celebrated screenplay for the upcoming Saving Mr. Banks,” said De Luca. “We were all taken with the depth and passion of Kelly’s engagement with the characters and world E L James has created, and we knew she was the right person to augment our Fifty Shades family,” added Brunetti. Universal Pictures and Focus Features acquired the rights to the three books in the “Fifty Shades of Grey” trilogy in March of this year. Focus Features will market and distribute the first film in partnership with Universal. “Fifty Shades of Grey” has become a global phenomenon and the trilogy has been translated in 45 languages worldwide since its release. In the U.S. alone, the “Fifty Shades” trilogy has sold over 32 million copies in e-book and print, making it one of the fastest selling book series ever. “Fifty Shades of Grey” follows the relationship of 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey and college student Anastasia Steele. Subsequent novels in the series, “Fifty Shades Darker” (September 2011) and “Fifty Shades Freed” (January 2012) explore the couple’s deepening relationship. Marcel was represented in the deal by WME and Casarotto Ramsay & Associates Limited. [ Deadline ]

High And Low: The Avengers Save Earth With Subtlety & Wit, Wong Kar-Wai’s Characters Swoon With Style

This week’s Low(brow) choice may have been a box-office-record-smashing mass-appeal hit, but it’s also a genre classic that sneaks a healthy dollop of wit and even subtlety into its comic-book storyline.  On the High side: two swoony love stories from a modern master . With movies this good, labeling almost seems beside the point. HIGH: Wong Kar-Wai Blu-Ray Double Feature: Fallen Angels and  Happy Together (Kino Lorber; $49.95 Blu-Ray) WHO’S RESPONSIBLE: Both films: Written and directed by Wong Kar-Wai. Casts: Leon Lai, Takeshi Kaneshiro and Karen Mok ( Angels ); Tony Leung and Leslie Cheung ( Happy ). WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Fallen Angels tells a tale originally designed to be part of Wong’s Chungking Express , about a lovesick hit man (Lai), a mute guy with a talent for breaking and entering (Kaneshiro) and a girl named Blondie (Mok). Although, as with most films by this auteur, what happens to these characters is less important than how they’re lit and what music they listen to. In the ironically-titled gay romance Happy Together , Lai (Leung) and Ho (Cheung) travel from Hong Kong to Argentina in an attempt to repair their thoroughly dysfunctional relationship. It doesn’t help. (The Tony Leung Chiu-Wai of this film starred in John Woo’s  Hard-Boiled and Wong’s In the Mood for Love , and is not to be confused with Tony Leung Ka-fai from The Lover .) WHY IT’S SCHMANCY: Wong and his frequent collaborator, cinematographer Christopher Doyle, create heartbreaking visual tone poems that are unique among contemporary movies. These aren’t the kinds of films where you ask “What’s it about?” or “What happens?” Instead, you have to let them take you where they want — on their terms and at their own pace. But if you’re patient enough, Wong will guide you into his characters’ hearts and heads, and the rewards are immeasurable. In this context, a glance, a pop song or even a color can speak volumes. WHY YOU NEED TO BUY IT (AGAIN): Not every director’s work makes a big leap in going from regular DVD to hi-res Blu-Ray, but Doyle is one of the great visual artists in film right now, and the crisper you can see his amazing images, the better. (All the more reason to get psyched about the upcoming In the Mood for Love Blu-Ray coming next month from The Criterion Collection.) This double-feature collection doesn’t skimp on the extras, either: Angels offers three behind-the-scenes featurettes and an interview with Dolan.  Happy Together includes a making-of doc ( Buenos Aires Zero Degree ) and a 2008 conversation with Wong from the Museum of the Moving Image. LOW: The Avengers (Walt Disney Home Entertainment; $29.99 DVD, $39.99 Two-Disc Blu-Ray Combo, $49.99 Four-Disc Blu-Ray Combo) WHO’S RESPONSIBLE: Written and directed by Joss Whedon, from a story by Whedon and Zak Penn, based on the comic book by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby; starring Robert Downey, Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Clark Gregg. WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Oh, like you don’t know: Loki (Tom Hiddleston) finally gets his hands on the Cosmic Cube that’s been bouncing through most of the previous Marvel superhero movies, and it takes the combined might of Iron Man (Downey), the Hulk (Ruffalo), Thor (Hemsworth), Captain America (Evans), Black Widow (Johansson) and Hawkeye (Renner) to save the planet from alien invasion. WHY IT’S FUN: Whedon gets the appeal of superhero comic books in the same way that Raiders of the Lost Ark demonstrated Lucas and Spielberg’s instinctual understanding of what made old-school adventure serials so fun. (For all the successes of the Spider-Man movies, for instance, you’d never know that the comic-book character was a one-liner-spouting sarcasm machine.)  While Whedon never underplays the high stakes of the plot, he lets these characters be funny, bitchy and untrusting of each other before they bond through their shared adventures. It’s an epic, breathtaking pop thrill ride that doesn’t spare the smarts or the endorphins. WHY YOU SHOULD BUY IT: Seeing as how it’s one of the most successful movies ever made, The Avengers comes to home video in a number of different incarnations, including a four-disc set that includes a 3D Blu-Ray option. The extras themselves are plentiful, if not earth-shaking, and include a Whedon commentary, star-packed making-of shorts, a look at the visual effects, deleted scenes, a gag reel and a Soundgarden music video. And if you’re springing for the 3D set, you’ll get Item 47 , the first of a promised series of Avengers-related short films. Alonso Duralde has written about film for The Wrap , Salon and MSNBC.com. Harry Potter’s J.K. Rowling: ‘I haven’t read’ 50 Shades Of Grey

They’re both behemoth British authors, but that does not necessarily translate into desire to pick up the other’s books for a read. On the eve of J.K. Rowling’s first post- Harry Potter series roll-out The Casual Vacancy , the mega-selling author of the fantasy series, which spawned a mega-multiple movie franchise said she hasn’t read fellow author E.L. James’ 50 Shades of Grey and probably won’t. The paperback version of 50 Shades managed to surpass the Harry Potter series as the fastest seller of all-time, though naturally the two literary blockbusters target different audiences. Rowling certainly hasn’t done bad with Potter , with an estimated net worth of $1 billion. “I haven’t [read 50 Shades of Grey ], have you?” Rowling told an interviewer from The Guardian , adding, “Well, if I’m truthful, it’s because I promised by editor I wouldn’t.” She quickly added that she was joking, but her editor did say, “Well, don’t read it,” she said. Asked further if she thought she was “missing out” on something, Rowling said, “Not wildly, no,” but added, “It could be amazing, but no I haven’t read it.” Rowling’s latest, however, moves into the adult-themed world that E.L. James’ wildly popular books have dominated of late. The Casual Vacancy reportedly takes on prostitution, drug use and class, according to The Guardian. “The worst that can happen is that everyone says, ‘That’s shockingly bad,’ she said about the pending novel. The Casual Vacancy will be available beginning September 27th. And as has been the focus of attention throughout the recent Summer, 50 Shades of Grey , of course, will now be heading to the big screen and speculation has been a constant over who will play the two leads. The debate and media attention may bode well for the forthcoming film version, though compared to the $2.3 billion Harry Potter franchise juggernaut, 50 Shades will have quite a hill to climb. The Casual Vacancy plot as described by the publisher’s parent company, Little, Brown Book Group: “When Barry Fairbrother dies unexpectedly in his early forties, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?” [ Sources: The Guardian , Wikipedia , Box Office Mojo , via The Insider ]

‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Fans Can’t Wait For Elevator Scene

‘It’s pretty much my favorite part,’ one ‘Fifty Shades’ reader tells MTV News of planned movie. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Uptin Saiidi “Fifty Shades of Grey” book cover Photo: NEW YORK, NY — Perhaps it’s too hot for even an R rating, but regardless of an MPAA ruling, this much is clear: A “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie is inevitable. Fans are chomping down on their leather belts of choice in anticipation of the live-action take on Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele — indeed, the dream casting calls are already pouring out with no signs of slowing . With so many iconic scenes already in the making, it’s almost impossible to ask fans to pick only one that they’re most excited to see— but for some “Fifty Shades” readers, the decision is a no-painer. “The scene I would like to see the most on the big screen is the elevator scene,” fan Sean Barnett told MTV News during a “Fifty Shades of Grey” signing at Barnes & Noble in New York’s Union Square last month. Fellow fan Morgan Nazarzideh had to agree: “When the movie comes out, I’m waiting for the elevator scene to happen. It’s pretty much my favorite part.” They weren’t alone in their requests for a raunchy elevator scene, but that wasn’t the only moment fans are pining for. In fact, “Fifty Shades” readers Christina Regalbuto and Jennifer Lubrano are already looking toward the potential sequel, “Fifty Shades Darker,” to see how steamy Christian and Ana’s relationship can get. “The scene I’m excited to see is from the second book, when she finally gets to touch him for the first time,” said Regalbuto, referring to the long-awaited moment in E.L. James’ second “Fifty Shades” novel. Stemming from that, Lubrano added: “Also from the second book, when he proposes to her. That’s a big, dramatic scene.” Fan Manuel Lemus said that, in the end, there are simply too many coveted moments from “Fifty Shades of Grey” to pick only one most-anticipated movie moment. “I’m excited to see everything, to be honest with you,” he said. “I really enjoyed reading this book. I’m excited. I can’t wait [for the movie].” Which “Fifty Shades” scenes are you most looking forward to seeing? Weigh in with your thoughts in the comments section below!
