Eminem/Slaughterhouse Deal Was ‘A Long Time Coming,’ Joell Ortiz Says

‘We’re four solo artists first, so the deal took longer than we expected,’ he tells MTV News. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Ade Mangum Slaughterhouse’s Joell Ortiz Photo: MTV News According to Joell Ortiz, one-fourth of the Slaughterhouse crew, the collective took so long to close their deal with Eminem because he, Joe Budden, Royce Da 5’9″ and Crooked I operate as solo artists. “It’s been a long time coming,” Ortiz said of the Shady Records deal. “We’re four solo artists first, so the deal took longer than we expected. We had to get contracts and things in order and things of that nature. But I believe it’s been in the works for a little over a year, and it finally came to life a few weeks back, and everybody is excited, including Eminem. And we’re looking forward to a powerhouse year in 2011.” Last month, Slaughterhouse finally announced their signing, after news of the union had been in the air for over a year. The deal was made public via XXL. The four MCs graced the magazine’s cover with solo upstart rapper Yelawolf, who also joined Team Shady. Em christened the signings as the start of a new regime. “Yelawolf and Slaughterhouse, it’s kinda phase two of Shady,” Eminem explained in a statement. “It’s the new generation of Shady Records, and as we’re trying to rebuild our label, it’s exciting for hip-hop, and with all of these forces coming together and with what everybody’s capable of on the mic, it’s gonna be fun.” In a radio interview shortly after the news broke, Crooked I commented on his new deal with Slaughterhouse, saying the underground group gets a larger platform by affiliating with Eminem. “I look at it like, for hip-hop on a whole, to have four dudes come together and represent different regions and represent hip-hop to the fullest, and get a deal to where we could travel into the mainstream and take our music to a bigger stage, I think it’s good for hip-hop,” he said. Eminem’s Puppet Alter Ego Makes Crazy Demands In Super Bowl Spot

The Detroit MC pokes fun at his media-wary image in Lipton Brisk ad. By Mawuse Ziegbe Eminem as a puppet in a Lipton Brisk Super Bowl ad Photo: FOX We’re all familiar with the maniacal stylings of Slim Shady, but during the Super Bowl on Sunday night (February 5), viewers got the opportunity to see Eminem’s latest alter ego in all its animated glory. The Detroit luminary lent his likeness to a stop-motion commercial for Lipton Brisk which premiered during the football face-off — an ad that proved that cartoon Em can be as entertaining as the original. The spot features Em’s self-aware puppet doppelganger — the same dummy he released a photo of late last week — breaking down the many reasons why the notoriously media-shy MC typically doesn’t endorse products. Rocking a gray hoodie, white T-shirt and jeans, the animated Em rampages about, rattling off nutty demands like insisting the spot has to be filmed in his house so he doesn’t have to go anywhere, he has to record his own expletive-laced music and he needs some “hot chicks.” The cartoon Shady also explains that he usually hates the products he’s asked to hawk, but in the apparently unique case of Lipton Brisk, the MC proclaims, “Damn, that is pretty good.” But when a stern Lipton exec says they can’t change the name, Em shoves him off a building and yells, “That’s why I don’t do commercials!” While Em unveiled one of the few commercial endorsements of his career during the Super Bowl, next Sunday is shaping up to be a big night for Shady as well. The Motor City MC is up for 10 nominations at this year’s Grammy Awards for his latest chart-topping album Recovery, and will also hit the stage. In addition to boosting his superstar status with high-profile appearances at the Grammys and the Super Bowl, Em is also hard at work building his stable of in-house talent at Shady Records with the recent signing of rap supergroup Slaughterhouse and hip-hop upstart Yelawolf. The MC outlined his plans for his prot

Will Eminem Put Out Another Album Soon?

‘We’re constantly working and we never know what projects the things we’re working on will land,’ producer Alex Da Kid tells MTV News. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Matt Elias Eminem Photo: Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images Eminem took a five-year break between albums before he released Relapse and Recovery in consecutive years. Now, with two handfuls of Grammy nominations , will the Detroit lyricist be putting out another album anytime soon? According to Alex Da Kid, who produced Em’s “Love the Way You Lie,” the veteran MC is always working, so it’s within the realm of possibility. “We’re constantly working and we never know what projects the things we’re working on will land,” he told MTV News. “But we have great musical chemistry, so he’s someone I pray to work with for the rest of my career, hopefully. “I think he’s in a great position where [he and Dr. Dre] can make music,” he continued. “And whenever they feel like it, they can put it out. There’s not a label telling them what to do, because they’ve been so successful, so it’s really up to him.” Eminem will be plenty busy this year whether he puts out a new project or not. He announced last week two new signings to Shady Records: underground supergroup Slaughterhouse and upstart rapper Yelawolf . Em called the acquisitions the next leg in his company’s evolution, from D12 and Cashis (both still signed to the label) to Yelawolf and his new collective, which features Joe Budden, Royce Da 5’9″, Joell Ortiz and Crooked I. “Yelawolf and Slaughterhouse, it’s kinda phase two of Shady,” Eminem explained in a statement. “It’s the new generation of Shady Records, and as we’re trying to rebuild our label, it’s exciting for hip-hop, and with all of these forces coming together and with what everybody’s capable of on the mic, it’s gonna be fun.” Do you want to see a new album from Eminem already? Slaughterhouse’s Crooked I Says Eminem Brings ‘A Bigger Stage’

Cali MC thinks underground supergroup signing to Em’s Shady Records can only be ‘good for hip-hop.’ By Paul Cantor Slaughterhouse’s Crooked I and Royce Da 5’9″ Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage On Wednesday, it was revealed that Eminem had made two new signings to his Shady Records. The expanded lineup would help reposition the company as it enters what Em described as “phase two of Shady.” Along with Alabama upstart Yelawolf , the Shady label boss inked Slaughterhouse — comprised of industry journeymen Joell Ortiz, Joe Budden, Royce Da 5’9″ and Crooked I — after rumors circulated for well over a year that the rap supergroup would be joining Em. Now officially a done deal, the rap collective is set to drop a self-titled EP on Shady/E1 on February 8. Cali MC Crooked I called in to DJ Supa James’ 104.3 NOW radio show in Las Vegas the same day the news was made public and spoke about what it means for a storied underground group to sign with a mainstream powerhouse like Eminem. “I look at it like, for hip-hop on a whole, to have four dudes come together and represent different regions and represent hip-hop to the fullest, and get a deal to where we could travel into the mainstream and take our music to a bigger stage, I think it’s good for hip-hop,” he said. Thirty-two-year-old Crooked hails from Long Beach, California, and has been sloughing it through hip-hop’s trenches since the late ’90s. He was once signed to Suge Knight’s Death Row Records, but it was long after the label’s heyday, and by 2003, Crooked’s contract had expired without him ever releasing an album. After dropping a handful of mixtapes, he hit the Net with a series of weekly freestyles in 2007 that garnered him a sizable following. “A lot of people out East, sometimes they sleep on West Coast artists and it might take a little longer for a West Coast artist to get respect over there,” he told Supa James. “[On the West Coast], I feel like it’s a lot of dudes that’s grinding, a lot of dudes that deserve a lot of shine and for some reason just ain’t getting the shine. I think the door is cracked open for us now and I’mma kick it all the way open so other people can just rush right in.” In 2008, Budden (another MC with a big online following) recruited Crooked I, Royce and Joell Ortiz for a song titled “Slaughterhouse,” which landed on Budden’s Halfway House album. The track birthed the group and they went on to release their self-titled, no-frills debut LP the next year. According to Crooked I, Shady Records is the perfect home for Slaughterhouse’s style of rap, which emphasizes clever wordplay over neck-snapping production. “Eminem is the kind of dude that makes classic albums as a whole,” he said. “And then when it comes to his radio presence, he’s the kind of dude that don’t have to make a certain type of song. Like, ‘Oh, I gotta make a club banger.’ He could do ‘I’m Not Afraid’ and talk about his life and still make a smash hit out of it. So he’s very respected; I plan on fully utilizing that.” “We just gonna come with the same thing,” Crooked continued, insisting Slaughterhouse won’t go pop. “We gon’ stick with what got us here. It’s like when you’re in the Super Bowl. If your running game got you to the Super Bowl, don’t start passing. We’re just gonna stick to our guns.” What do you think of Em officially signing Slaughterhouse? Tell us in the comments! Eminem Signs Slaughterhouse, Yelawolf To Shady Records

Cashis and D-12 remain on the roster as Shady enters ‘new generation.’ By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Eminem, Slaughterhouse and Yelawolf on the March 2010 cover of XXL magazine Photo: Kai Regan/ Harris Publications Eminem is back in more ways than one. The Detroit lyricist is reviving his Shady Records company, and Wednesday (January 12) he announced the signing of two new acts: underground supergroup Slaughterhouse and upstart rapper Yelawolf . Cashis and D-12 remain on the roster, but Em made no secret of wanting to bring new life to his company. “Yelawolf and Slaughterhouse, it’s kinda phase two of Shady,” Eminem explained in a statement. “It’s the new generation of Shady Records, and as we’re trying to rebuild our label, it’s exciting for hip-hop, and with all of these forces coming together and with what everybody’s capable of on the mic, it’s gonna be fun.” The four-man Slaughterhouse collective — Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, Crooked I and Royce Da 5’9″ — was in talks with Shady Records for longer than a year working on the deal. “I been answering that question for a year and change, ever since that Drake ‘Forever’ music video,” Budden told MTV News during an appearance on “RapFix Live,” citing a scene where the group stands behind Em during his verse. “It’s like, Eminem is a whole nother entity. The guy is nominated for 10 Grammys.” Southern rhyme slinger Yelawolf is backed by music industry veteran Kawan “KP” Prather, who inked an upstart T.I. to his first deal and helped Usher on the superstar’s Confessions album. “Considering where I’m from and the sh– I’ve been through, it’s hard to put into words what partnering with Shady means to me, my team at Ghet-O-Vision and my state of Alabama,” Yela said in prepared remarks. “I can tell you that when you’re willing to give your life up to see a dream through, the reward is great,” he continued. “And now that I’ve become an apprentice to one of the greatest artists in the world, my potential reaches beyond anything I ever imagined. Let’s kill this sh–.” Both acts are expected to deliver projects in the coming months. What other artists would you like to see on Shady Records? Share your ideas in the comments below! Eminem, Jay-Z Track ‘Syllables’ Leaks Online

The dated tune, titled ‘Syllables,’ also features Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Stat Quo and Cashis. By Jayson Rodriguez Eminem and Jay-Z Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Leave it to the last two Hottest MCs winner, Eminem and Jay-Z, to lament the lost art of lyricism in hip-hop. The two top-notch rappers — along with Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Stat Quo and Cashis — spit about catchy choruses and gimmicks taking over the game on “Syllables.” The track is a buried studio gem from old recording sessions that made its way online on Tuesday night. “If we got to dumb down our style and A-B-C it, then so be it,” Em raps over slow piano stabs. “‘Cause nowadays, these kids, geez/ Don’t give a sh– about lyrics, all they want to hear is a beat and that’s it/ Long as they can go to the club and get blitz, pick up some chicks and get some digits. “We don’t know a word to the verse, we only know the chorus,” he adds later. “‘Cause the chorus repeats the same four words for us.” It’s unclear when the song was recorded, although Cashis confirmed that the number was dated via a Twitter post . “I recorded it a while ago but it just came out today,” wrote the rapper. “Timing is everything.” The tune likely dates back to when Cashis was a newcomer on Shady Records (he and Stat Quo, an Aftermath signee, have since left the respective labels). Meanwhile, a track called “Topless” featuring Eminem and Nas also hit the Net on Tuesday night. A previous version of the song with Nas and T.I. has been circulating online for some time. Em and Tip both rap in cadences similar to Dr. Dre, a sign that their vocals are references for the producer. Related Artists Eminem Jay-Z

Eminem’s U.K. Freestyle ‘Took Us Back,’ Royce Da 5’9" Says

‘It was like we was kids again,’ he says of getting three verses apiece along with Denaun Porter on Tim Westwood’s radio show. By Shaheem Reid Eminem Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Royce Da 5’9″ is back in the D. He’s taking a little time — and we do mean a little time — to rest up after his trip overseas with Eminem , Alchemist and D12 member Denaun Porter. “It was great, man,” Royce, on the phone from his house in Detroit, said of the trip, which was a press run in support of Em’s Recovery. “I was going around them and soaking up game. I think it’s phenomenal how [Eminem manager] Paul [Rosenberg] can be around us joking one minute, and then the next second, he’s on the phone handling business and dealing with point people. It’s so tight. I peep the way they do things, the way Em knocks sh– out without complaining. It teaches me a lot. It’s like being a fly on the wall. You about to be a part of something special. I truly feel that Em is about to go on a crazy run. The album is phenomenal. I see a pattern, and I’m glad to be a part of it. We had a great time over there. All work.” Royce, who started a friendship with Em back in the mid ’90s, is soon to be an official member of the Shady roster. The long-talked-about Slaughterhouse/ Shady Records deal is in the fourth quarter, Royce said. One of the highlights of the trips overseas was a stop off at Tim Westwood’s radio show, where Royce, Em and Porter kicked three verses apiece . “You know what’s crazy? Denaun was like, ‘We should just do two verses. The three verses is going to be too long,’ ” Royce said. “Em was the one pushing for three verses. He was like, ‘Let’s do three verses.’ I’m like, ‘Damn, he must really wanna get these off.’ When I heard them, I knew why he wanted to spit them. When we did it, it was fun. It took us back. When we got on the jet going back, we was talking the whole way about that sh–. That sh– reminded me of back in the day when we used to go in. Me and Em got an 11-minute freestyle on Stretch Armstrong’s show 10 years ago. It took us back to that. It was like we was kids again. It was fun.” Royce just released his new mixtape with DJ Whoo Kid, Bar Exam 3: The Most Interesting Man in the World. What do you think of Em’s new material? Let us know in the comments! Justin Bieber Fever Takes Over ‘Today’ Show

Al Roker even gets a policeman to admit he’s got the fever. By Eileen Reslen Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images If a lot of young girls were absent from school on Friday morning (June 4), the cause could well be an outbreak of Bieber fever. Justin Bieber visited the “Today” on Friday morning for a free concert outside NBC studios in New York’s Rockefeller Plaza, where the teen sensation played a mini-concert featuring five of his most popular songs. The epidemic wasn’t confined to kids: As the show’s Al Roker pointed out, it wasn’t even above the law. “One question,” Roker asked a policeman. “Sergeant, do you have Bieber fever?” “Yes,” the officer answered with a smirk. “It’s official: The NYPD has Bieber fever,” Roker said. An army of Bieber fans from all over the country filled up the plaza with high-pitched voices and brightly-colored posters. “This may be the biggest crowd we’ve had for days, the show’s Matt Lauer said, to which Meredith Vierra replied, “It reminds me of Paul — Paul McCartney. So, I get it.” The broadcast was taken over by Bieber fever, with almost every segment, from the weather to interviews with celebrities, being “Bieberized.” Roker’s forecast could barely be heard above the fans’ screams, and his signature sign-off was tweaked to say, “Here’s what’s happening in your neck of the Bieberwoods!” “Get Him to the Greek” star Jonah Hill was there to promote the film, and his interview was also obscured by the teen screams. “I have Bieber fever all over my body right now,” Hill joked. Bieber rushed down from his pre-performance rehearsal and interrupted the interview to give Hill a fist-pound for his comments. Before his performance, Bieber told Lauer how much his life has changed since becoming famous. “It’s pretty crazy that now I go out and, you know, I’m always asked for autographs and stuff, but that’s kind of what I signed up for,” Bieber said. He added that his career goal is longevity. “I want to, you know, be an artist that doesn’t just come out with one song and you know, then they’re done,” Bieber said. As he performed in the humid morning air, Bieber bounced around with his background dancers through “Baby” and “One Time” and others without missing a beat, with some of his dance moves seemingly inspired by mentor Usher — he chest pumped and moon-walked across the stage. After the performance, Bieber stuck around to sign some autographs, but not before talking about his upcoming tour. “It starts in like a couple of weeks, so I’m really excited,” he said. “There’s going to be a lot of lights and a lot of, like, magic stuff, which is going to be cool.” What did you think of Justin Bieber’s appearance on the “Today” show?
