Jay-Z ‘Bothered’ By Plight Of Undereducated Youth

‘They can’t further their education because of their situation, because of money,’ Hov tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Jay-Z Photo: MTV News It is Jay-Z ‘s competitive spirit that has made him one of the best rappers of all time as well as one of hip-hop’s most successful businesspeople. However, when it comes to his charitable efforts, Hov is driven by something very different: his desire to share his wealth of experience with the world. “You’ve been blessed. Your talent has taken you to places you never thought you would see. I just think as a compassionate human being, you want people to see,” Jay told MTV News before describing the first time he saw Italy. Hov, who was amazed with his own early travels abroad, called an old friend and urged him to “pack a bag” because he simple had to see Italy. On December 8, the God MC announced that he would be playing two benefit shows at New York’s Carnegie Hall , the proceeds from which will go to the United Way of New York City and the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation. The money raised will help put low-income NYC students in a position to attend college. Back in September, the Shawn Carter Foundation threw a fundraising carnival on the west side of Manhattan where celebrity guests like New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez and pitcher C.C. Sabathia bought high-priced tickets to help Hov’s cause. All the Watch the Throne MC wants to do is create an opportunity. To help illustrate his interest in helping to educate young people, Jay quoted a line from the final scene of the 1993 Robert De Niro film “A Bronx Tale”: “The saddest thing in life is wasted talent.” “That really bothers me, someone who really applies themselves and wants to go and they can’t further their education because of their situation, because of money or because they have to stay in the house to watch their [siblings],” Jay told MTV News. “Something about that really bothers me.” Jay and his mother, Gloria Carter, started the Shawn Carter foundation in 2002 to help those facing socioeconomic difficulties further their education at institutions of higher learning. The foundation started with one student earning a full ride through college and grew to offer 50 scholarships to students in 50 different states annually. To date, more than 750 students have been awarded scholarships totaling in excess of $1.3 million. Tickets for the Carnegie Hall shows, which will take place on February 6 and 7, will be sold privately and priced at a premium rate, fetching anywhere from $500 to $2,500 to raise a significant pot of money for the charity. Regular fans aren’t completely shut out though. On January 30, a number of reasonably priced tickets will go on sale to the public. The publicly sold seats are being released close to the concert date in hopes of curtailing scalping. “We’re not just doing a show for the sake of it,” Hov said. “For all these years, [the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation has] been really grassroots. My mom has been getting on the bus herself and taking kids to orientation and doing this work by herself. Now … we’re building this thing out.” Related Artists Jay-Z

Chaz Bono and Jennifer Ella: It’s Over!

Chaz Bono and his Jennifer Elia, his fiancee, have broken up. The couple have called off their engagement and “are no longer a couple,” a rep for Bono confirms . Howard Bragman, Chaz’s publicist, said the following: “Chaz Bono and Jennifer Ella leave this relationship mutually and with great love, respect and affection toward one another. No further amplification will be forthcoming and they ask that you respect their privacy at this time.” Jennifer Ella and Chaz Bono got engaged earlier this year, but were a couple since 1999, long before he underwent gender reassignment surgery to become a man. Amber Portwood: JAILED For Probation Violations!

Looks like Amber Portwood is back jail. It’s not entirely clear why at this time, but a judge issued a warrant for her arrest today, and it was executed. The Teen Mom star was apprehended and booked. The arrest may be related to Amber’s most recent alleged probation violations, including a fight she got into at a restaurant last month or a new one entirely. Amber Portwood is currently being booked at Madison County Jail in her home state of Indiana, where she’s now expected to spend the night … and the holidays. She’s due to face a judge on January 13 for violating probation. We’re talking every single one of her probation terms. Think Lindsay Lohan style, but worse. Amazingly, if she does spend Christmas behind bars, it will be the second consecutive year that’s happened to Amber. Signs you may have some issues … UPDATE : Amber’s brother Shawn tells E! News that his sister missed her most recent probation hearing and, as a result, authorities went to her house. While there, they went through her purse and found some “old pills” that Amber said were from an earlier prescription … which she couldn’t produce proof of. Therefore, she was jailed, release date TBA. Sheriff’s deputies say it “will be up to the courts to decide” how long she stays there. Not looking good.

A Lil Positivity: Jay-Z Offers Ballers Overpriced Concert Tix To Help Raise Scholarship Dollars [Plus New Jay-Z Candids]

Gotta love those ex-hustlers with their big hearts. The Jiggaman is plotting on them rich folks pockets in an effort to raise funds for the broke kids who want to go to college. Hip-hop legend Jay-Z said today he will perform two concerts at Carnegie Hall in February to raise money for his scholarship foundation and United Way of New York City. “I want to do my part to make sure everyone has an opportunity,” Jay-Z said in an interview today. “It’s really a shame when someone has drive and really wants to further their education, and they’re unable to because of their financial situation.” The shows will mark the first time a major solo hip-hop act has been booked for an entire show at the storied Manhattan venue, according to Clive Gillinson, Carnegie Hall’s executive and artistic director. Most of the tickets for the Feb. 6 and 7 shows will go on sale Monday and will be priced at $500 to $2,500. They’re aimed at wealthy individuals, such as hedge-fund executives and others tied to Wall Street, Jay-Z said. “This is about connecting people to help other people,” said the artist, whose real name is Shawn Carter. A portion of the tickets will be offered to the public at much lower prices on Jan. 30. Jay-Z’s Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation and United Way will split the proceeds from the ticket sales. The United Way works with families and schools to boost the reading proficiency of children from low-income neighborhoods. Raised in the Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant district, Jay- Z, rose from poverty to become one of hip-hop’s top-selling solo acts. In 2002, he launched his charity with the help of his mother, Gloria Carter. His nonprofit has given away more than $1.3 million to help 750 needy students attend college. “We know we’re going to raise some money and help some people,” Jay-Z said. “But we’re also going to raise the profile of what I’m doing.” Hov is also making history with this one. It will be the first hip-hop “themed” performer at Carnegie Hall. Aight. Source SplashNews More On Bossip! RihRih Gets Kushed Up And Goes Drizzy H.A.M. Foster The People ‘Don’t Stop’ Video: High-Speed Chase

Band gets creative in new clip, which features ‘Precious’ actress Gabourey Sidibe. By James Montgomery Foster The People’s “Don’t Stop (Color on the Walls)” music video Photo: Columbia Records You’ve probably heard Foster the People’s new single “Don’t Stop (Color on the Walls)” in those Nissan commercials where a bunch fabulous-looking, creatively haired millennials cavort in the backseat and a voice-over guy burbles about stuff like “the most headroom per dollar of any car in America.” In a way, it is sort of the perfect song for selling modestly priced compact cars aimed at young adults with a few dollars to burn (a target demo that, given the current economic conditions, is admittedly pretty slight): bright and shiny and poppy, vaguely bloggy — if that’s even a thing — impossible to place in any given genre or era, instantly disposable in all the best possible ways. You’d think there are ad agencies who spend millions of dollars researching these things or something. Anyway, it’s probably only a coincidence (at least I hope it is) that the video for “Don’t Stop” — which premiered Thursday (December 8) on MTV.com — also involves a car. Though, in this case, it’s an old beater of a hatchback, and instead of starring someone straight out of central casting, it inexplicably features “Precious” actress Gabourey Sidibe. Also, it’s roughly 450 times more clever than those Nissan spots. Part good old-fashioned car chase, part improbable love story, it’s sort of an updated take on “Bonnie and Clyde,” with frontman Mark Foster starring as a wanton driving instructor who absconds with a satchel of cash from the DMV (who knew they had that much loot on hand?) and tricks Sidibe into being his getaway driver — namely because the cops (played by his bandmates Mark Pontius and Cubbie Fink) are hot on his trail. Things go about as well as you’d expect, as Gabby nearly slams into a cop car, stalls out, and then, at Foster’s insistence, blows through a red light. As the two battle for control of the wheel, the car blows through intersections, runs fellow motorists off the road, slams through barricades and eventually crashes through some scaffolding, covering their car in paint and finally drawing the attention of the fuzz. From there, the clip switches into full-on action mode, with Sidibe and Foster outrunning the law with some off-roading moves and falling in love in the process. After some vehicular back-and-forth, the duo is finally nabbed, and as Foster is cuffed, Gabby decides to makes one last break for it — but not before stopping to plant a kiss firmly on Foster’s lips. Of course, we also find out that the two officers who have been in pursuit share a rather special bond of their own, and as Sidibe guns it and disappears over the horizon, the clip ends. The whole thing is sweet, silly and delightfully over-the-top, and, after repeated viewings, one can only wonder: Why didn’t Nissan think of this first ? Jay-Z Marvels At Playing Carnegie Hall Charity Shows

‘Any time I get a chance to expand and broaden the reach of hip-hop is a great thing,’ Jay says of February 6 and 7 shows. By Rob Markman Jay-Z attends the United Way Of New York & Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation Press Conference on Thursday Photo: Ilya S. Savenok/ FilmMagic First he went from Marcy to Madison Square; now Jay-Z is going from Crooklyn to Carnegie Hall. On February 6 and 7, Hov will play the famed Carnegie Hall — and it’s all for a great cause. “Any time I get a chance to expand and broaden the reach of hip-hop is a great thing for me on a personal level,” Jay said after announcing the shows Thursday (December 8). “When we were looking at hip-hop, we were just happy to play club dates,” Jay told MTV News. “And then Run-DMC started doing arenas, and you’re like, ‘Man, this is possible,’ and it just keeps going further and further.” With the pair of shows — which will be held at Carnegie’s Stern Auditorium — Jay aims to raise millions of dollars for the United Way of New York City and the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation in an effort to put low-income NYC students in a position to attend college. Shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday, Hov — as well as top brass from Carnegie Hall, the United Way and the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation — gathered in Carnegie to announce the concert and talk about their fundraising efforts. Tickets for the dates will be sold privately and priced at a premium rate, fetching anywhere from $500 to $2,500 to raise a significant pot of money for the charity. Regular fans aren’t completely shut out, though. On January 30, a number of reasonably priced tickets will go on sale to the public. The publicly sold seats are being released so close to the concert date in hopes of curtailing scalping. After the press conference, Jigga sat down with MTV News to explain his motivation. “We’re not just doing a show for the sake of it,” Hov said. “For all these years, [the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation has] been really grassroots. My mom has been getting on the bus herself and taking kids to orientation and doing this work by herself. Now … we’re building this thing out.” Jay hasn’t determined how his Carnegie set will look, if he will bring out any guests during his shows or how many times he will perform “N—as in Paris,” but all those questions will be eventually be answered. “We have to do a rendition of ‘N—as in Paris’ in Carnegie Hall; it just has to go down,” Jay said, laughing after being posed the question. “I ain’t think about that. That’ll be great.” Related Photos Kanye, Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj Let Loose At 2011 Victoria’s Secret Show Related Artists Jay-Z

Jay-Z Raises $1,000,000 For Charity With Beyonce By His Side

Go here to see the original:

Jay-Z’s carnival-themed fundraiser, held last week at New York’s Pier 54 for his Shawn Carter Foundation, raised $1,000,000. The event, called Making The Ordinary Extraordinary, aimed to raise funds for college scholarships for underprivileged kids. Jay arrived first to the event first, but Bey and her belly inconspicuously came later, meeting him at the Spotted Pig food truck where they snacked on sliders. She also sat at a picnic table and watched as her hubby threw darts with Alex Rodriguez. Jay and his mother Gloria Carter started the foundation in 2002 with only one student earning a full ride through college. However, in the next three years, the offering grew to offer 50 scholarships in 50 states. Now, more than 750 students have been awarded scholarships and nearly 500 kids have taken part in the foundation’s college tours, some even rode the bus with Jay’s mom. We love this!
