Matt Lauer to the rescue? There are words NBC executives never thought they’d say to themselves. But with host Bob Costas ailing from an eye infection that has become the talk of the Twitterverse, the network has confirmed that Lauer will take his spot for tonight’s coverage of the Sochi Olympics. “Reluctantly, I was trying to throw a complete game here, but I think we’re going to have to go to the bullpen, and I don’t know if you’re aware of this or not, but you’re Mariano Rivera, at least tonight,” Costas told Lauer by phone this morning on Today . “Let’s hope it’s only tonight. I’m walking around, I might as well be playing ‘Marco Polo.’ I have no idea where I am.” Costas had been trying to ignore his eye issues since Day One of the Games, but it was apparent last night that the infection had spread. We’ll see how long his hiatus lasts and we’ll gauge how well Lauer does this evening. But as long as he doesn’t dress like Pam Anderson again, everything should run smoothly.
Movie legend Shirley Temple died last night at the age 85. The former child actress retired more than six decades prior to her passing, but she’s still remembered for her red hair, her dimples, her signature drink – and for one song in particular. Temple first sang “On the Good Ship Lollipop” in 1934’s Bright Eyes, belting out the track in a scene she reportedly choreographed herself. The number has been referenced and duplicated many times since (from The Brady Bunch to The Simpsons) and we can think of no better way to salute the late star than to run her original here: Shirley Temple – “On The Good Ship Lollipop” Temple, of course, is merely the latest known name to pass away in 2014. Julia Roberts’ late half-sister Nancy Motes, who died last weekend, appears to have called the Oscar winner out in a series of Twitter posts last month. Motes termed Roberts a “b!tch” and “hag” as she vented, illustrating that their rocky relationship likely never healed prior to Motes’ untimely death. Nancy Motes, Julia Roberts’ Sister, Dead Nancy Motes was found dead of an apparent overdose Sunday. In Tweets dated January 19, and written under the handle @Dabbs76, she allegedly wrote: “So my ‘sister’ said that with all her friends & fans she doesn’t need anymore love. Just so you all know ‘America’s Sweetheart’ is a B—-H!!’” She later added, “Do you want to be a fan of someone so cruel? She’s not even that good of an actress. Happy you totally F–ked with me?” Clearly, she had an axe to grind, justifiably or not. Three days later, Motes, a professional dog walker, said that that her “own family has abandoned” her. “Hey Hag! Glad you f–ked with me yet? You’re going to LOVE what’s coming! FYI – You’re an awful, hate filled old pathetic excuse for a human.” In another bizarre twist, one of her last Tweeks was to Farrah Abraham , thanking her for following her account and asking, “Do you know who I’m related to?” Motes, who had the same mother as the Pretty Woman star, long had bad blood with her A-list sister, 46, though it’s not entirely clear why or from what. Last May, it was rumored Julia was planning on skipping Motes’ wedding due to the tension, and concern that “Nancy [would] try to tap her for more money.” Julia “exploded” when she saw Motes snapping photos of her newborn twins in 2005, according to the National Enquirer , offering one possible explanation. Kanye West Buys Bomb Proof Armored Trucks Via FanSided reports: I guess if you’re Kanye West, you have to protect baby North West by any means necessary, even if that requires you to plop down $2,000,000 bucks on two heavily armored SUV’s. Kanye, who’s been dealing with on again, off again problems with the paparazzi in recent weeks apparently wanted to make a statement and did so by purchasing two Dartz Prombron armored SUV’s from Latvia. They can retail for around $400,000, but the way Kanye has labeled his “North West Protection Mobiles” come to about $1 million each. While one of the rides is a ‘cheaper’ version (only about $800K or so) the more expensive of the two, the ‘Prombron Iron Diamond’ model (valued approximately at $1.2 million) is able to withstand attacks from landmines and rocket-propelled grenades, because that’s exactly what you need driving around the streets of Calabasas, California. Seasons change, but T&A is forever, as MAM-onstrated by the slew of nude season premieres and finales on the boob tube this weekend. Last night’s season five premiere of True Blood was titled, appropriately enough, “Turn! Turn! Turn!”, and the episode had enough skin to turn any limp snake into a wooden stake. Kelly Overton (who you may recall briefly went nude in the 2010 video-game adaptation Tekken ) provided the week’s best nudity baring T&A as she transformed from a werewolf back into human form. And nudecomer Lucy Griffiths also exposed seat meat getting banged from behind in her shipping container…no, literally. She lives in a shipping container. Also nude on HBO this weekend, Lena Dunham said goodbye to season one of her contentious creation Girls by baring boobs during a bout of SKINsomnia, and Mad Men ended season five with Alexis Bledel once again pushing the boundaries of basic cable with some major (and majorly mouthwatering) side boob. Looks like she took Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino’s advice to heart.
