Director X sits down with MTV News and breaks down the sexy new clip, including the deets on ‘Chunky Bieber.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Vanessa White Wolf Justin Bieber in his “Boyfriend” music video Photo: Island/Def Jam Justin Bieber drives fast cars, nuzzles with one very lovely young woman and gets his dance on in his record-setting “Boyfriend” video . Fairly simple in its concept, the video is a snapshot of what it would be like to party with the teen star and his hip friends on a rooftop in Los Angeles. MTV News recently sat down with Director X , and he broke down what it was like to hit the set with the 18-year-old as he readies the next phase of his career, the more mature Believe era . The video is the lead visual off Bieber’s June 19 album, and X took us through the clip, frame by frame. “We start this off with the car stunts,” he said of the opening shot. “We wrecked that car by the way; both of those Mustangs were pretty shot after this video, completely shot after this video.” From there, fans are invited to Bieber’s car-themed rooftop bash, one that recalls the type of shindig another teen idol from back in the day may have thrown. “So we got this rooftop here in L.A., starting our day with Justin and he’s pulling up. We got all the cool kids hanging out,” X said. “Justin’s new look, he’s kind of got a James Dean thing going on here. That’s really Justin driving that Mustang … and he did all the stunts by himself, completely. That’s all him,” X joked. “Actually, that’s us holding the car. We put the car on these wheels and we pushed it around in circles while Justin pretended to drive.” Justin’s “smooth” driving moves are matched only by the real ones he uses on his female co-star, Rachel Barnes. “We got Justin with the girl, pulling [her] around [with the] kids dancing, ’cause you know how kids do. That’s what goes on [at these get-togethers]: Someone brings out their guitar and the party happens,” he explained. “The idea really was to show a lifestyle piece — Justin hanging out — to show that he’s older … just to see this new vibe,” the director added. “We get to see that he’s growing into his manhood. [We] just [wanted] to get in an environment where we can show that naturally, just have fun and get the vibe of who he is.” While Bieber and his lady love in the video captured fans’ attention, a co-star who was dubbed “Chunky Bieber” on-set has also gotten some buzz. X explained, “[Chunky Bieber] came with one of the cars and somehow [Bieber’s manager], Scooter [Braun], I don’t know how in the world they got into conversation where Chunky Bieber started dancing somehow.” Apparently it all went down when the director wasn’t looking. “They taped ‘Chunky Bieber’ to his shirt and Chunky Bieber got in the video.” As the video closes out, Justin’s dancing skills are on full display. “Got some footage of Justin dancing, [and] those are really his feet,” Director X said. “He can do that, and that’s it: Justin Bieber, bad boy.” What do you think of Justin’s “Boyfriend” video? My name is Anood, I am 14 years old. My Bieber experience happened on the 23rd of April 2012. I heard that Justin would be in London from the 23rd of April until the 26th of April. Since I was on spring break I decided to go and try to meet Justin. I travelled from my country (Kuwait) to London which was about a 8 hour flight. When I arrived in London I went to the hotel that Justin was staying at. When I arrived there was a couple of beliebers waiting, but not a lot. I waited for about 2 hours. Suddenly Moshi, Kenny and Alfredo came. I asked if I could take a picture with Kenny and Alfredo and they accepted. They both went into their van and drove away. I waited about 4 more hours when suddenly we saw Justin through his hotel window, waving and taking his shirt off. At that time the hotel was packed with beliebers. So many people came, that they had to call the police. We waited around 10 more minutes when suddenly Justin’s car came out and drove away, but thank God his car got stuck in traffic. All the beliebers started running behind his car when suddenly Justin came out the roof top of his car! He started waving and when I got close to him, he smiled at me and touched my hand. My name is Ciara and I am 14 years old. I am from a small town in Ireland and cannot believe I am finally writing my Bieber Experience. During the summer of 2011 I bought the Never Say Never DVD when it was first released. On the inside was a competition to fly to America to meet Justin Bieber. I devoted my time entering this competition; 70 times a day for over a week. Three months later I got the email saying that I had won. I was going to meet Justin in LA. Two weeks after I got the news, it was my birthday and I was heading to LA airport. It was nearly a 24 hour journey but so worth it. On the Friday, we were brought to Paramount Studios along with some other winners from across the world. We were sitting in an empty dining room chatting and getting excited. At 6:20 Kenny walked in. Seeing Kenny made it all real . Kenny headed straight for the snack table. Then Justin walked in. He waved and thanked us for coming. We each got a chance to go up to Justin. I walked over to Justin who put his arm around me and whatever way he did, I held his hand for a few seconds. That made my life. I am getting shivers thinking about it. His hands were the softest things I have ever felt, that boy is a moisturizing machine! They were smooth and warm and tan. My mum was struggling with the camera so I took the chance to give him a book that my classmates and I made for him. He took it and thanked me and passed it to Kenny. Mum passed him my copy of First Steps to Forever. He brought out his own sharpie from nowhere. He wrote Justin in about 2 seconds. Then, he looked at the page for about five second looking confused. He drew a line and paused again. He then made the line into a ‘B’ and signed Bieber but before he handed it back to my mother he drew a little heart. The next people then came forward so my mum thanked him, he replied with “No, thank you, thanks for coming!” I squeaked a thank you and moved out of the way bumping into Kenny’s elbow. KENNY TOUCHED MY ELBOW. I was losing all consciousness . I stood at the side of the room shaking for the next 15 minutes as everyone got their turn. My name’s Katelen and I’ve never written anything like this before, so here it goes! I live in Perth, Australia and I’m nearly 14 years old. In late 2010 (December) Justin’s first Australian tour came on pre-sale and I knew I would never be able to afford tickets. So Mum and I entered all the competitions you can enter for tickets to his concerts, or even more; a meet and greet as well. Tickets kept on selling out so I’d cry, then they’d release more tickets so everything would be alright. I saw so, so, so, so many competition winners be announced from the radio stations, music t.v shows, newspapers and even social messaging sites (MSN). Everyday I got so jealous. On April 18th I got a mention from a girl on Twitter saying “Congrats on winning the Justin Bieber Competition”. I instantly got very excited and replied “Which one?” because I’d entered a lot of them. I logged onto my emails to find 2 emails from ninemsn – I cried. The first one was just a “Congratulations you won!”, the second one was from a Representative. Confirming my address and phone number as my phone had been turned off from being at school. Julia (The Representative) rang me and told me personally that I was going to meet my idol! I also had the choice to choice a friend; I chose my Mum. She was the one who helped all this happen after all. The morning of 7th of May was very hectic. My dad came around to get my brothers because mum and I wouldn’t be home until late. I was the only one home my mum had to take my brother to one of his competitive football games north of Perth. 12 o’clock wouldn’t come quick enough! 12 o’clock came and we arrived at Burswood Dome at approximately 2:30pm. Bought some merchandise, and mingled with the other beliebers. At 4:30 we had to meet Pat at the box office, and he gave us and about 100 more fans their wristbands. We walked through the stadium, and backstage to see Alfredo, Ryan, Dan and Kenny! Justin was waiting behind the black curtain and we had to go in groups of 4. We went in with 2 other random girls. At first I wasn’t going to stand next to stand next to Justin, I stood next to the other girl and my Mum was about to walk around to the other side when Kenny asked her “Is this your daughter ma’am?” So he moved the other girl around the other side so me, mum and Justin could stand next to each other! (I’m on the right of Justin, and My mum’s the one looking over). We then got escorted out into the stadium and waited there until all the meet and greets were over. Then we went to the main area. We could either go outside or stay in there and get to our seats first, we decided to stay inside as the lines were kilometres long. We were allowed to go to our seats first; it was empty! Then swarms of other girls entered and soon it eventually was full! The show started late, and Dash and Will; the opening act came on, Then DJ Tay James came on and DJ’ed for 15 minuted then it started!! I couldn’t contain my excitement! I swear Justin pointed at me during ‘U Smile’ and ‘Somebody To Love’ but it could’ve been someone next to, behind, or in front of me!
