NYPD Rookie Police Officer Indicted On Manslaughter Charge For Killing Of Unarmed Brooklyn Man Peter Liang, the rookie cop who killed unarmed Brooklynite Akai Gurley has been indicted on second degree manslaughter charges for the shooting that took place in November in Gurley’s unlit housing project staircase. According to NY Daily News reports : Peter Liang will face criminal charges that can send him to prison for up to 15 years for the death of Akai Gurley on Nov. 20, 2014, a source said. A grand jury started hearing the case on Feb 4. A spokeswoman for the Brooklyn district attorney declined to comment. A source said Liang was indicted for a top count second-degree manslaughter, which means he acted recklessly, among other charges. Liang discharged one bullet when patrolling the stairways of the Pink Houses in East New York, striking Gurley in the chest as the man stood in the landing a floor below. The News reported that Liang and his partner did not answer the radio in the six-plus minutes right after the shooting and instead texted their union reps. The DA had obtained an indictment in recent months against three cops in two different incidents involving alleged assaults during arrests. NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton had previously called Gurley’s shooting “an unfortunate accident.” Liang is expected to turn himself in Wednesday morning ahead of his arraignment in Brooklyn Supreme Court. SMH. Damn shame they have these unexperienced cops out here shooting blindly in the dark, afraid of what the big bad black man is going to do. An innocent man was killed and meanwhile you can bet the sorry a$$ Police and Sergeant’s Benevolent Association are out here issuing statements about how sorry they are for the poor cop, who still has his life, who “accidentally” took someone else’s because he was afraid. Transgender Woman Shot Dead By Texas College Footballer Player After Finding Out She Was A Man Back in January we posted this story , and at that time detectives were still looking for clues to solve Tyrone Underwood’s murder. Via TylerPaper A Longview man has been arrested for the murder of Tyrone Underwood. Carlton Ray Champion Jr. was arrested Jan. 29 for a probation violation, but was the prime suspect at the onset of the investigation, according to the official affidavit. On Jan. 26, officers found Underwood, 24, of Tyler, dead in his vehicle from multiple gunshot wounds in the 400 block of West 24th Street. Early interviews with people who knew Underwood revealed the two men had been seeing each other for several weeks. During an early police interview, Champion told police he had not spoken with or seen Underwood since 11 p.m. on Jan. 25. The police located cell phone messages between Champion and Underwood the night of the murder that indicated the men wanted to meet after midnight. There was an argument between the two men that ended with Underwood telling Champion he did not want to continue the relationship. Around 2 a.m., the two decided the location of the meeting. Champion became defensive and uncooperative when police asked him about the inconsistencies in his earlier interview. Champion, who police say was attending Texas College, remains in Gregg County jail and faces first-degree murder charges in Smith County. Judge Christi Kennedy signed the arrest warrant and placed a $1 million bond on him. Crazy as it sounds, it’s even crazier how the police cracked the case. According to an affidavit filed in support of the murder arrest warrant, Carlton Ray Champion Jr. became a suspect after Ty Underwood’s roommate, Kedrick Darks, told police Underwood had been dating a man named “Carlton” for several weeks prior to her death. Our news partners at KYTX CBS 19 are reporting that although Darks had no details on the man, a police department employee who knew Underwood said the man played football Texas College. It was at that point that investigators connected the dots and confirmed that Champion, in fact, played football for the school. The detectives said they interviewed Champion, who confirmed that he had been communicating via a service called “Kik” with Underwood, who was going by “Tyra” on the service. They were able to search Champion’s tablet computer and allegedly discovered communications between Champion and Underwood dating back to January 19, 2015. “After reading the text between Champion, Jr. and Underwood, it was clear that the two have had sexual relations with each other,” one detective wrote. The investigation revealed a series of messages between Champion and Underwood on January 25 in which Underwood was angry with Champion for initially agreeing meet in person that night and then backing out. Underwood sent a message saying she no longer wanted to see Champion, to which he allegedly responded: “That’s how it is now, I will make it up.” After that, there was allegedly some additional conversation about where and how they would meet, and whether it would be at Texas College or along a random street. The conversation makes it appear they were to meet on 25th street. Carlton thought he was bout to get some sloppy toppy… One of the detectives interviewed Champion’s father and wrote “[Champion’s father] stated that Carlton Jr. was meeting [Underwood] and thought [Underwood] was female. According to [Champion’s father], Carlton Jr. was supposed to get some type of sexual favor from [Underwood] but realized [Underwood] was a male.” BRUH. Image via Twitter/Police
Unarmed Black Carpenter Shot 8 Times By Police Awarded $2.5 Million In Settlement via Contra Costa Times The state of California agreed Tuesday to pay $2.5 million to settle an excessive-force lawsuit filed by an African-American carpenter who was shot at least eight times by a white CHP rookie during a traffic stop. The state offered the settlement on the first day of trial in federal court, after the officer who shot James Henry Ligon Jr. in 2012 testified that Ligon stepped out of his car and charged directly at him, shouting threats. The problem with CHP officer Joe Lafauci’s account was it did not match the physical evidence in the case, said Ligon’s lawyers, Jaime Leanos and Nelson McElmurry. Ligon was shot four times in the back, suggesting he was not coming at the officer. “Officer Lafauci immediately went for his gun, unlike his more experienced partner, who got out of the patrol car without even taking out his gun,” just his Taser, McElmurry said. Lafauci had only 14 months on the job when he emptied his service pistol of 12 rounds, at least eight of which hit Ligon. Ligon, now 37, said he had stepped out of his car after leading the CHP on a high-speed chase for three miles because he couldn’t hear what the officers were yelling and to show them he was unarmed. Details surrounding what led to the high speed chase reveal that Mr. Ligon was suspected of drunk driving at the time of the incident. According to Sunnyvale police, which investigated Ligon’s shooting, Lafauci and fellow CHP officer Cory Walczak tried to stop Ligon in a gold Toyota Corolla about 1:30 a.m. on southbound Highway 101 near Ellis Street, suspecting he was driving drunk. It was later determined he had an estimated blood-alcohol level of .25-.32, at least three times above the legal limit of .08. He was on probation at the time for possession of mushrooms for sale. Ligon did not pull over and instead drove onto city streets in Sunnyvale for about three miles to the 200 block of Alturas Avenue, near where his mother lived. He was driving her car and did not want it to be impounded, Leanos said. Ligon pleaded no contest to felony evading and misdemeanor DUI charges, after prosecutors dropped a felony resisting arrest charge. This case serves as a great example for how these types of incidents SHOULD be handled. No one is advocating that people breaking the law should get off scott-free (drunk driving and evading police is certainly a punishable offense) however, police officers shooting to kill should NEVER be the first course of action without consequence when a suspect makes it clear that he is unarmed.
