Intervention: Your footage sucks

Vanguard correspondent Christof Putzel had one foot out the door, on his way to shoot his first story of the season, when editors staged an intervention. “Your footage sucks,” they said, pleading for him to put down his trusted Sony A1-U and let the pros handle the shooting. After years of filming his own interviews, Christof says, “The idea of not having it kind of freaks me out a little.” Vanguard is Current TV's original documentary series. Led by correspondents Mariana van Zeller, Christof Putzel, Adam Yamaguchi and Kaj Larsen, Vanguard features enterprising reports from around the globe. It airs every Wednesday at 10pm on Current TV. Marine Reportedly Killed by Mercenaries High on Opium

Pentagon originally said Marine killed in combat. The Pentagon confirmed late Tuesday that it is investigating the death of a 24-year-old Indiana Marine after he was shot to death in Afghanistan, allegedly by several US-paid private security contractors. The contractors, according to a fellow Marine in Afghanistan who communicated with an investigative reporter in Chicago, were Afghanis who were found with “copious amounts of opium” and had been paid by the United States as guards. “He was killed by American Hired Local National Contractors that were high on opium the morning of the 19th,” the ABC reporter quotes a friend and fellow colleague of Lance Corporal Joshua Birchfield as saying in an email message. Lance Corporal Joshua Birchfield was killed after being shot in the head Feb. 19. The Department of Defense originally reported that he died of “small arms fire” while in combat. But the story is apparently darker and more complex — raising questions of whether the Pentagon originally concealed information about the Marine's death. The Chicago Marine who tipped off the ABC reporter purportedly wrote a detailed email surrounding the circumstances of Birchfield's death. In it, he asserts that the young Marine was killed by Afghanis paid as private contractors. “These men are armed to the teeth and supposedly here for our protection,” the fellow Marine is said to have emailed. “We have been shot at by the contractors on several cases before this incident. We have been told to refrain from returning fire and attempt to identify ourselves as Marines so they stop shooting.” “They are also drug abusers,” he continued. “The shooter was found to have copious amounts of wet opium on him shortly after the shooting … we found a bag of wet opium in the compound that the contractors were using to get high.” “A mix of drugs and gray areas of loyalty between U.S. forces and Taliban seems to be the motivation behind the shooting,” he added. The Pentagon, announcing an investigation into the death on Wednesday, declined to say what exactly they were investigating. more at link… Afghanistan is the drug war. Waka Flocka Flame ‘Ain’t Worried’ About Who Shot Him

MC says he isn’t concerned about self-proclaimed gunmen who posted photo of himself online with Waka’s stolen chain. By Shaheem Reid Waka Flocka Flame Photo: MTV News Last week, a man claiming to have shot Waka Flocka Flame last month in Atlanta sent his photo to KarenCivil.com, holding Flocka’s stolen diamond Brick Squad chain. Obviously, self-incrimination took a back seat to attaining two minutes of fame for the self-proclaimed assailant. Although he’s said the shooting was an attempt on his life , Flocka said he isn’t concerned with who the gunman might be. During a visit to New York on Tuesday (February 23), Flocka said he’s moving on from the shooting . “I don’t know [if it was actually the gunman] ’cause I didn’t even see who shot me,” Flocka responded sarcastically when asked about his thoughts on the photo. “I thought a dog shot me. I thought a bird shot me. It’s stupid.” Flocka was sporting a brand-new Brick Squad chain today. This one had green diamonds and looked a lot flashier than the one he lost. “This is round two,” he said about his new chain. “Round one is gonna pop up in my mailbox like, ‘Hey man — here.’ “I ain’t worried about you. I appreciate you too,” Flame addressed the gunman, looking directly into MTV News’ camera. “You got me sacked up real big. I got a stupid house off you, cars off you. I appreciate you, man.” When asked why he thought someone would incriminate himself further by putting a picture online, Flocka said he’s he doesn’t know or care. “That’s on them folks. Let them folks do they job,” he said. “It is what it is. Y’all done said enough. I did enough. What I’mma keep flippin the story? I don’t know, bruh. Let them live their life, I’mma live my life. That’s right there [behind me]. They sitting right there. They probably not even sitting this close. I’m giving them too much. I ain’t even worried about them. That’s so behind me right now.” Flocka’s “O Let’s Do It” and its official remix continue to be hot singles, and he said he’s going to let the streets pick his next single and isn’t too focused on making an album at the moment. He’s content with dropping mixtapes. Waka and Roscoe Dash (of “All The Way Turnt Up” fame) are releasing a street project of duets called Ten Toes Down. Waka also has two solo mixtapes, LeBron Flocka James 2 and Keith Waka Sweat. “For these girls,” he explained about why he’s putting out the latter. “I got too much girl fans — 70 percent of my shows be girls — so I gotta give them some music.” Since being released from the hospital earlier this month, Flocka Flame is just now feeling up to moving around. Besides his gunshot wounds, he had blood clots in his right leg and arm. “I feels good, bro. It feels real different,” he said about being mobile. “It feels like the old me died. I promise to God. I don’t even have a normal life no more. I’m learning this new lifestyle. I’m just eating what they feed me. In this business, this attitude and anger — you gotta throw that to the side. Your pride, you gotta tuck that in. You go with the flow. But you don’t bend over backwards for nobody. To each his own, you gotta really count your moves and what you say in this game.” Waka’s first show since the shooting was last week in St. Louis. “That thing was turnt up!” Flame boasted of the show. “I’mma keep it gangsta, I was nervous. I was like, ‘Are they gonna mess with me? They gonna throw bottles?’ But it was crazy. I jumped in the crowd, I walked around in the club. I was in the Lou, turnt up.” Related Artists Waka Flocka Flame

Jayson Williams Sentenced to Minimum of 18 Months in Prison

Jayson Williams is going to prison. The former NBA star was sentenced to five years in jail today for the 2002 crime of fatally shooting a hired limousine driver. He will be eligible for parole in 18 months. Last month, Williams pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in the death of Costas Christofi on February 14, 2002. He was convicted on four counts of covering up the shooting in a 2004 trial. A clearly disturbed, dangerous person, Williams drove drunk – and into oncoming traffic – earlier this year. He averaged 13.6 rebounds per game as a member of the New Jersey Nets in 1997-98. In court today, State Superior Court Judge Edward Coleman went along with a plea agreement that spelled out the five-year prison sentence and the potential for Williams to be released as early as summer 2011. Choking away tears, Williams spoke out in court and apologized to Andrea Adams, Christofi’s sister. He said: “There’s not a day I wake up that I don’t feel sorry for what I did to Mr. Christofi and that I put you through this.” He’ll have a long time in prison to consider those actions and, hopefully, turn his life around.
