Shows will look ‘as dynamic and as emotional’ as Last Train to Paris sounds, Diddy tells MTV News. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Kelley L. Carter Diddy Photo: MTV News Diddy-Dirty Money is making sure their Last Train to Paris album gets an extended shelf life. The Sean “Diddy” Combs-led trio is kicking off their Coming Home Tour on Wednesday (April 13) in Minneapolis. Over his almost 20-year recording career, the Bad Boy Records CEO has grown accustomed to rocking stadiums, but this tour will be hitting small venues during its month-long run. “We wanted to do an intimate tour because it gives you a chance to play to the people that really love your music,” Diddy told MTV News during a rehearsal break. “It’s not as commercial as just going to an arena situation, which after this, we have different arena shows. The whole purpose of this was the reinvention, to do things that I haven’t done before, for me to have new, different experiences and for me to really connect with people. … I think there’s no better way than to go and do an up close and personal tour.” While show locales might be smaller in scale, Diddy-Dirty Money will be backed by a band, and they plan on packing the same emotion and sonic passion found on the Last Train album into their shows. “I just wanted it to look how it sounded,” Diddy said. “As dynamic and as emotional as it sounds, that’s the way it’s going to look. I wanted to give people more than what they bargained for. Because in this viral age, I just wanted to imagine the first five dates and how every city, when people see the show, they’ll be talking about it virally.” Prepping for the shows has shown the group’s other members, singers Dawn Richards and Kalenna Harper, the intense side of Diddy as he makes sure the tour’s stage show is perfect. “The crazy thing about working with Puff is that we’ve learned to work around him, focusing and understanding it’s a learning process,” Harper said. “We’re with somebody who’s been in the industry for 20-some-odd years. So, for him to be focused on what the lights look like, what it should sound like, like he said, ‘Looking out for the bullsh–,’ that’s something for us to pay attention to, and we’re in the group with him.” After numerous delays, Last Train was released in December and landed at #7 on the Billboard albums chart. Most projects start winding down a few months after their release, but this group doesn’t plan to let up anytime soon. “That’s the great thing about this group that I’m really excited about: our work ethic. There’s no such thing as sleep,” Richards said. “For us, this is the fun part. We been locked in the studio for three years trying to figure out what this [album] was going to be like. To finally have it come to pass and then to be able to sit here with the band and hear it live like this is really [exciting] for us.” Will you be seeing the Coming Home Tour? Tell us below! Ne-Yo, Cyndi Lauper continue to perform in the country following earthquake. By Gil Kaufman Ke$ha Photo: Noel Vasquez/ Getty Images As the people of Japan continue to struggle with the recovery from the nation’s devastating earthquake and tsunami, some artists are being forced to cancel their tour dates in the nation. Ke$ha released a statement on Monday announcing that she would have to postpone her upcoming dates in the nation. “My heart is with Japan right now through this disaster and these hardships,” the singer wrote on her website . “I genuinely don’t think right now would be appropriate timing for me to perform in Japan given the content and the spirit of my show, which is all about feeling exuberant, rowdy, and wild. … I plan to bring my party there and to that part of the world when we are all ready to dance and Get $leazy together again. In the meantime I am going to do everything I can to help relief efforts and I encourage everyone in the world to do the same.” In the meantime, Ke$ha has a string of North American dates kicking off on April 1 with a show in Clarion, Pennsylvania, and running through early May. According to Billboard the promoter of scotched Japanese tour, Creativeman Productions, also announced that it would be canceling a pair of its annual spring festivals. The Springgroove an R&B, soul and hip-hop festival scheduled for April 2 near Tokyo and April 3 in Osaka, would have featured Nelly and Flo Rida, among others. Also called off was then annual hardcore Punkspring festival on April 1 and 2 in Osaka and Nagoya with headliners Good Charlotte and Hoobastank. Ne-Yo continued with his planned dates in Japan over the weekend, performing a show in Nagoya on Friday and launching a charity initiative to help the people of the country. Called “Spread Love Through Music,” the show included donation boxes at the concert to help those in need and the sale of a special wristband with proceeds going to earthquake relief. He plans to do the same during his shows on Tuesday (March 22) in Yokohama and Thursday in Tokyo. “You can absolutely spread love through music, and I think that’s what’s absolutely called for in this time of crisis,” he said in a video on his website. Also currently touring Japan is Cyndi Lauper, who is slated to play a show in Osaka on Tuesday and was in the country promoting her Memphis Blues album when the quake hit on March 11. She’s been tweeting about her experience all along, and on Monday, she wrote about the healing power of music in the shattered country. “Miss my family but have my music family and the warmth of the peeps I sing to. Tonight I will loose myself in the music and the rhythm,” she wrote. Like Ne-Yo, she is asking fans to donate cash at the shows to earthquake relief and is donating all royalties from sales of her Blues album in Japan to the Japanese Red Cross. On ‘RapFix Live,’ we ride a bus with the L.A. hip-hop collective to see what they’re all about. By Kelley L. Carter Tyler, The Creator Photo: MTV News These guys may very well be the future. Or at least get props from Justin Bieber sometime soon. For Thursday’s (February 24) “RapFix Live,” MTV News caught up with the guys of Los Angeles hip-hop collective Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All on a bus from NYC to Philadelphia shortly after their “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” performance. “I’m this close to Justin Bieber acknowledging me,” rapper Tyler, the Creator joked of their Internet fame. While hanging out on the bus, the guys said their brand of hip-hop is so different that it makes them a bit uncomfortable to label their shows as “rap.” “We’re so opposite,” Tyler said. “If you go to any other rapper’s show, they just stand there and rap.” Domo Genesis piped up in the background, adding, “I don’t think our shows are rap shows. Even though it’s rap music, they’re not rap shows at all.” Tyler continued: “Rap is really just too conventional. Everybody does the same thing. No one ever pushes the box. And then when you get people pushing the line too far, people are like, ‘What the f— is this?’ And then it’s like … ‘This is tight, it’s new.’ We’re doing something that no one has ever done before.” The bandmembers also talked up their fans’ energy. “You know how many [middle] fingers we get at our shows? That means something to them,” Tyler said. And as for the future? The guys are hoping it looks bright. “I want Grammys. I want to perform at the Super Bowl,” Tyler said. “I want to be a … icon. Kanye West went like this. I want to be on his level. I want 100 years from now to look at the history books and they see … us on some icon type sh–.” Do you think Odd Future will make the hip-hop history books? Let us know in the comments!
