Japanese Hip-Hop Producer Nujabes Died

http://e22.com/nujabes/ March 17th, 2010 Today, I have very somber news for the international hip hop community, especially fans of the independent hip hop scene, and those who have followed my career. It has been announced that Jun Seba, aka Nujabes, Japanese hip hop producer extraordinaire, passed away late February. Official statement from the label (in Japanese) here: http://hydeout.net/hydeout/2010/03/_hydeoutproductions.html We deeply regret the loss of a unique talent and a close friend. Through his soulful music, Nujabes has touched so many people around the world, even beyond his dreams. He was a mysterious character to most as he avoided the public limelight, rarely conducted interviews, so only a few got to know the man behind the signature production. Yet it continued to amaze me how young listeners of all backgrounds learned of his enigmatic name, and expressed support for his music. As I write now from Japan, I had been leaving him messages the past couple of weeks, trying to get in the studio together, so the news could not have come any more unexpected. Even last week, I passed by his house and called him thinking he was still home. I met Nujabes around 2000 and as an upcoming MC, I was fortunate to work on tracks such as Battlecry, F.I.L.O, Luv(sic) parts 1, 2 and 3. We had been working on the next trilogy of Luv(sic) over the past year (which we're determined to see through). The last time we talked in January, Nujabes emailed me to wish Jeff Resurreccion, a 19-year old beatboxer who had just passed way from cancer, his heartfelt condolences. While we continue to respect the privacy of his family, we will work to preserve his legacy, and pay tribute to the body of work, some unreleased, that he has left for us to enjoy. Jun Seba will be dearly missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and fans worldwide. in peace, Shing02 added by: TheBrownKid

Lacey Brown Goes Home On ‘American Idol’

Tim Urban and Paige Miles were also in the bottom three. By Gil Kaufman Lacey Brown on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: Fox It was good news and bad news on the first top 12 elimination night of this season’s “American Idol.” The good news of the night was that the judges’ save is back, meaning a unanimous vote by the panel can bring back any of the finalists up until the top five. The bad news, of course, is that someone had to test that save after the finalists took a tumble through the catalog of the Rolling Stones, and unfortunately for Lacey Brown, she was the first test case. The Texas balladeer got to give it one more shot in a bid for the save, pulling out her cover of Brandi Carlile’s “The Story” one more time. But after washing out just a hair short of the semifinals last year and finally making it to the “Idol”-dome this time, it wasn’t meant to be for the pastor’s daughter from Amarillo, Texas. She got the news during an agonizing hour that featured performances from former champ David Cook, current pop tart Ke$ha and guitar-pop newbie Orianthi. The first singer to face elimination was Paige Miles. Though the judges praised her scratchy “Honky Tonk Woman” after finding out that she had been struggling with laryngitis all week, Miles made the long walk to the bottom three early in the broadcast. The second cellar dweller was no surprise, as perpetually on-the-bubble Tim Urban got zapped over his close-but-no-cigar reggae cover of “Under My Thumb.” “Beast of Burden” was deemed a safe choice by the judges, but it was still enough for Lee Dewyze to live another day, so he took a safe seat along with resident quirky girl Siobhan Magnus, who drew comparisons to both Snooki from “The Jersey Shore” and Adam Lambert on Tuesday thanks to her gothy rendition of “Paint it Black.” Also safe were sensitive teen Aaron Kelly, who got through with a tender take on “Angie,” and Andrew Garcia, who just squeaked by with a passable “Gimme Shelter.” Didi Benami finally got across-the-board praise from the panel Tuesday for her dark take on “Play With Fire,” as well as a thumbs-up from voters, who also still dig Crystal Bowersox after her Bonnie Raitt-ish “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” The judges continue to give Katie Stevens maddeningly contradictory advice, but the show’s other teen did just enough with “Wild Horses” to stick around, as did big Michael Lynche, whose soul-splashed “Miss You” hit the spot. That left Casey James and Brown facing the final bottom-three spot, with Brown taking the walk of shame after a lukewarm, stripped-down “Ruby Tuesday.” The first of the three sent back to safety was Urban, who once again employed his signature stunned look at the news. It was Brown facing the door in the end, though, with Miles sent to safety as the clock ticked down. In a new wrinkle this year, contestants vying for the save can sing any song they’ve performed on one of the live shows to date, so Brown went with a reprise of the well-received Carlile ballad. Trying hard not to oversell it and heed Simon Cowell’s advice to avoid coming off like she was acting, Brown stood nearly stock-still and somewhat stiff in the middle of the massive stage and appeared deflated as she struggled to hit some of the notes and clearly didn’t do enough to save her spot. “It was unanimous, and unfortunately, no, we won’t be using it,” Cowell said sternly. Brown took it well, saying, “I had a lot of people tell me maybe go the country route. … I will keep singing for my fans and for myself, because I love to do this. I’m excited for the future.” As she wiped away a few tears, Brown watched the montage of her journey on “Idol” as her fellow contestants circled her center stage. The show also featured season-seven champ Cook singing a grunged-up version of the Rolling Stones’ “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” which owed as much to Kings of Leon as it did to Guns N’ Roses. Michael Jackson’s former live guitarist, Orianthi, also performed, shredding her way through the guitar-pop single “According to You.” Ke$ha lit up the stage, wearing a glittery eye mask that matched her silver bustier, with a quartet of backup dancers wearing giant TV sets on their heads. 3OH!3 came out to reprise their mid-song rap, which gave Ke$ha enough time to strap on a towering Native American headdress. Maria Sharapova Still Playing Tennis of the Day

Maria Sharapova was a big deal a few years ago. Since I’ve stopped following the tennis circuit because I am not a Wasp with a Volvo and white shorts. I do however appreciate any sport where women don’t have to be transformed into dudes to be pro but can still be sexed up in little skirts, with little panties that always end up getting a little wet spot on them by the third set of screaming and moaning like bitch is getting the biggest dick of her fucking life with every serve… Sure Sharapova isn’t as appealing as she was, but I’m sure there are obsessive compulsive virgins out there who still wear her signature tennis line while jerking off. So l’ll put this out there for them… Pics via PacificCoastNews

Matt Giraud Working On ‘Soulful Rock’ Debut

‘American Idol’ vet duetted with Scott MacIntyre on Thursday night. By Gil Kaufman Matt Giraud performs on “American Idol” Thursday Photo: F Micelotta/American Idol 2010/Getty Images It’s been a while since America has seen Matt Giraud. The JT-like soul man who was a wild card “American Idol” finalist and recipient of last season’s controversial judge’s save has been working hard off-the-radar since his fifth-place finish on season eight. Since his “Idol” run ended, Giraud’s been writing songs in Nashville for his debut album, working with such well-known songwriters as Marcus Hummon (Rascal Flatts, Dixie Chicks) and Monty Powell (Keith Urban). “I’m not really going country,” he told MTV News last month, “but they appreciate soul down there and I’ve been playing with them and making great music.” So far, he’s recorded 15 songs, many of which he co-wrote, and is hoping to amass at least 30 before he starts shopping an album around. First he plans to release an EP sometime later this year to capitalize on the buzz he’s gotten since notching a #1 hit on the iTunes jazz chart with Nashville singer Anna Wilson on “You Don’t Know Me.” He also made his triumphant return to the “Idol” stage during Thursday night’s elimination show, teaming up with fellow finalist Scott MacIntyre on a spirited dueling piano cover of Billy Joel’s “Tell Her About It.” “I’m just learning the craft of songwriting,” Giraud said of the writers he’s been working with in Nashville and Los Angeles, including Leah Haywood, who wrote “Pieces” for Allison Iraheta’s debut album. He was also planning on hooking up with singer/songwriter Graham Colton, whose “Best Days” has been featured on “Idol,” and which Giraud sang when he made it to Hollywood during season eight. “For them, it’s their job. One day they’re working with John Legend and Carrie Underwood and the next they’re with me. They know I don’t have a big record deal, but they want to work with me because they see something in me.” For now, the singer who made his bones with his smooth blue-eyed soul style, said he’s putting together an arsenal of songs that will hopefully surprise his fans, including some of his signature soul, plus some bluesier numbers, a few Maroon 5-style pop tunes and a handful of tracks that mine the Legend vein of buttery R&B. “Every time I work with a new writer something different comes out,” he said, describing the overarching sound as “soulful rock.” He hasn’t signed a label deal yet, but there’s been some interest and for now he said he’s just taking his time and playing live shows in between studio sessions. Lady Gaga Talks Hidden Meanings In Epic ‘Telephone’ Clip

‘American Idol’ Loses Haeley Vaughn, Jermaine Sellers, John Park, Michelle Delamor

Danny Gokey performs his debut country single during results show. By Gil Kaufman Haeley Vaughn on “American Idol” on Thursday Photo: Fox In some ways, the first two weeks of this year’s “American Idol” semifinals have felt a lot like an extension of the brutal Hollywood Week: a painful but necessary mass culling of the herd in order to get to the good stuff. Four more singers went down Thursday night (March 4), including Michelle Delamor, Jermaine Sellers, Haeley Vaughn and John Park. Inexplicably, Tim Urban, the cute boy who has proven two weeks running that he is the luckiest guy on the stage, was given a pass, which allowed him to bust out his “what? me?” face yet again along with Todrick Hall, whose Tina Turner cover drew serious fire but also enough votes to keep him in the running. Pumped-up Michael Lynch did it again with a solid James Brown cover, and Casey James was waved through despite a split decision from the panel on his cover of the oft-sung “I Don’t Want To Be.” That left Purple Haze singer Park standing after another messy week courtesy of John Mayer’s “Gravity,” which, in typical “Idol” fashion, Park sang way better on his way out after being eliminated, almost hitting half the notes and showing more personality and verve than he had in weeks. The second man to go was testy soul man Jermaine Sellers, who got the dreaded “cabaret” putdown from Simon for his smooth-jazz version of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On.” He was paired center stage with onetime front-runner Andrew Garcia, who kept on chugging despite a just so-so reception for his version of James Morrison’s “You Give Me Something,” which the panel felt lacked pizzazz. That left suddenly surging rocker Lee Dewyze in the running after his solid take on Hinder’s “Lips of an Angel.” Nervous teen Aaron Kelly and equally nervous Alex Lambert, who is starting to come around thanks to a nuanced cover of John Legend’s “Everybody Knows,” also survived. Sellers said it wasn’t his unpredictable personality that did him in. “Where I sing from, you can’t be taught how to riff and run and sing high notes,” he said. “I’m a church singer. That’s where my heart is.” He tried to take it to church one more time as he gently sang his way off with the Gaye classic, hitting all the same nutty, seesaw notes that did him in to begin with. For the ladies, the first casualty was Michelle Delamor, the somewhat bland R&B singer who took a chance that didn’t pan out with Creed’s power ballad “With Arms Wide Open.” “I think I was so wrapped up in trying to do everything right while being judged that I kind of lost sight of just performing,” she said dejectedly, promising to keep on keepin’ on. The second run through “Arms” was no better and maybe a bit sharper, so America appeared to have gotten it right. Didi Benami dodged a bullet, even after Simon compared her to a screeching cat thanks to her bomb-tastic cover of Bill Withers’ “Lean on Me.” Also making the grade were quirky jazz bird Lilly Scott, soul belter and possible new front-runner Paige Miles and high-schooler Katie Stevens, who still hasn’t found her groove but did just enough with “Put Your Records On” to stick around again. The second ax then fell on Haeley Vaughn, the teenage cow-pop wannabe who fell down hard with her attempt at Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb” and appeared to sense she was not going to stick around. Standing next to her was Lacey Brown, who did what the judges suggested and sang Sixpence None the Richer’s “Kiss Me,” even if they didn’t like the results, and made it through anyway. “I think I could definitely use some more experience,” Vaughn said, lamenting that she’s going to have to return to high school next week before making the rocky climb one more time. Even with mixed results from the judges for her gutsy but very slow solo piano ramble through Coldplay’s “The Scientist,” Katelyn Epperly lived another day; resurgent leader Crystal Bowersox bounced back from possible elimination after her hospitalization Tuesday thanks to a winning version of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Long as I Can See the Light”; and resident oddball Siobhan Magnus blew the room away with her note-heard-’round-the-world throwdown on Aretha Franklin’s “Think.” Returning to the stage was last year’s #3 finisher, Danny Gokey, who performed “My Best Days Are Ahead of Me,” the debut single from his upcoming album. Rocking a leather jacket, jeans, a burgundy shirt and his signature specs, Gokey’s gravelly soul voice was warmly received as he sang the peppy country/pop tune about the power of positive thinking. “I can be whatever I want to be/ My best days are ahead of me,” he crooned over a twanging pedal-steel riff. “I’ve got sunsets to witness, dreams to dance with/ And beaches to walk on and lovers to kiss.” After spending most of his “Idol” run being tagged as “the guy with the tragedy” — a reference to the death of his young wife Sophia four weeks before his audition — Gokey said he wanted to come out with a first single that showed how much hope “Idol” gave him. “I just found out the writer of the song lost his wife too, and he wrote this song a few months after she passed away. And without me knowing it, I picked it up, I recorded it and put it on radio. … It’s an anthem for me. I’m excited about life again.” The group sing-along was to the Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling,” with the girls doing a much better job of selling he corny lip-synch than the boys, who seemed like they were extras on a “Sesame Street” skit about positive hip-hop. The painfully cheesy segment did give us a glimpse of mullet man Lambert fake-shouting the lyric “Mazel Tov!” and Urban throwing up some painfully suburban rapper hands, as well as the quirky Magnus just saying no to tight skirts and leggings and going with ripped jean shorts over tights. The girls will be back performing Tuesday, followed by the guys on Wednesday. What did you think about the eliminations? Did America get it right? Who do you think should have gone home? Robert Pattinson Climbs A Tree With Jimmy Fallon

RPattz pokes fun at his own brooding image before promoting ‘Remember Me’ on ‘Late Night.’ By Gil Kaufman Robert Pattinson appears on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” on Monday Photo: NBC Jimmy Fallon is often found in a tree looking pale, pretending to be Robert Pattinson going on about the things that bother him in the world’s worst British accent. But on Monday night, Fallon had some company up in that lonely tree when the real RPattz climbed into “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.” “The month of March,” Fallon emoted in his latest “Robert Is Bothered” skit. “Comes in like a lion, goes out like a lamb. What the f— does that mean? Pick an animal and stick with it!” “Hey,” the “Twilight” star interrupted, his arms wrapped around a limb just behind Fallon, eyes narrowed in his signature fashion. “I don’t talk like that.” “How does it make you feel?” Jimmy countered. “I don’t know how it makes me feel, to be honest,” Pattinson said. “A little bit annoyed, a little bit frustrated …” “Something that starts with a ‘B,’ maybe?” Fallon persisted. “A little maybe bit broken,” Rob countered. “Close, but … does it bother your?” Fallon said. “Yeah, I’m bothered,” R. Pattz finally admitted to Fallon’s fist-pumping delight. The only thing that was louder than the scream that greeted the first glimpse of Pattinson in the tree was the sustained squeals from the studio audience when Fallon offered Pattinson the opportunity to shoot lasers out of his eyes as the actor sat down for a chat back in the studio. Mussing his signature bed-head thatch of hair, Pattinson seemed quite amused by the trick, expertly segueing into a chat about his new romantic film, “Remember Me.” Asked if he’s ever watched co-star Emilie de Ravin on “Lost,” Pattinson admitted that he watched half of the first episode and was so confused he had to bail. “It was already too much for me,” he sighed. Pattinson agreed with Fallon that Edward Cullen fans might be on board for “Remember Me” since it had a similar dramatic, dark vibe. “I hope so,” he said, as the crowd squealed in assent. Talking about the endless press he’s done for the “Twilight” series, RPattz said he was so terrified of going on the “Late Show With David Letterman” to talk about “New Moon” for the umpteenth time last year that he memorized every stock answer perfectly to avoid getting tripped up. “I prepared all my answers just before, and I was so comfortable as I walked in, every little nuance, every little mannerism was all planned out,” he said. But his responses to “Remember Me” questions have been much less planned out. “People ask me what the film’s about I’m like, ‘Pfftt,’ ” he laughed, joking about possibly being over prepared. Pattinson also talked about recently his older sister Lizzie’s music. When a Twitter question came in about whether the actor — who performed some music for the first “Twilight” soundtrack — might ever release an album, Pattinson raked his hands through his hair once more and smiled, “I don’t know.” He looked confused at first when a desperate-sounding plea rose up from the crowd and then realized that the ladies in the audience were repeatedly yelling, “Please!” Fallon then suggested an admittedly horrible idea, asking Pattinson if he might form a band with co-star Kristen Stewart called … wait for it … “the Twight Stripes.” “That sounds really, really bad,” Pattinson cringed. “That sounds like it means something …” Check out everything we’ve got on “Remember Me.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
