Kara DioGuardi: Bikini Stunt Saved My Job

A year after strutting around in a black two-piece on stage on the American Idol finale, Kara DioGuardi tells Women’s Health that the move “probably saved my job.” “I kept saying no,” the songwriter said, recalling the plan to face off against Katrina Darrell , a.k.a. Bikini Girl. “I mean, what crazy nut is gonna go out there in a bikini at almost 40 years of age against a girl who is 20 and probably cosmetically enhanced?” Still, she calls it “a defining moment” that helped cement her place on the American Idol panel along with judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul. “Like, ‘She’s serious and industry, but also as kooky as everyone else on this panel,'” DioGuardi says . “I looked a little pasty. But hey, at least I didn’t wet myself!” Small victories. As for how she maintains her body, the American Idol staple says she hits the gym four times a week. There, she runs two miles or does 25 minutes of cardio. “Boxing, treadmill, step-ups, lunges, sprints, I mix it up … Weight training is important as you get older. You build muscle, which burns fat when you rest.” And in addition to drinking at least “two huge bottles” of water a day, she eats plenty of veggie stir-fry: “The more roughage you eat, the more it fills you up.” And if she ever loses motivation to maintain her fitness and diet, she counts on her loved ones. No we don’t mean Simon, although we can see him saying this: “Someone [close to me] said, ‘You may want to work on your arms – they’re a little jiggly,'” she says. “The people in my life have no qualms about telling me!”

Ryan and Simon Butt Heads on American Idol

There were lots of strong performances among the finalists on American Idol , but the most memorable moment of the night may have come from Ryan Seacrest. After Simon Cowell called out Michael Lynche for “corny” dance moves, Ryan not only came to the affable singer’s defense, he got in Simon’s grill in the process. The normally unflappable judge was taken aback – and scooted his seat back, throwing his hands up and admitting he was very uncomfortable. Point, Seacrest! Chalk up another memorable exchange in one of Hollywood’s ongoing rivalries / friendships. We never quite know what to make of the dynamic between them. Ryan definitely threw Simon off here, though, which was funny and uncomfortable. Check out the clip below of the two stars almost butting heads … literally: Ryan and Simon Butt Heads

American Idol Performance of the Week: Michael Lynche

On American Idol , he’s known as “Big Mike.” This moniker, bestowed upon semifinalist Michael Lynche by Ryan Seacrest, refers to the former’s massive stature. But it’s also now appropriate for the impression made Lynche last night. It was BIG! Belting out Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work,” Lynch literally brought Kara DioGuardi to tears. She had to be comforted by Simon Cowell, while the crowd couldn’t stop applauding. Watch the performance below, and be warned Casey James : you’re no longer the male favorite. This Woman’s World

Michael Lynche’s ‘This Woman’s Work’ Brings Kara To Tears On ‘American Idol’

Simon Cowell dubbed it ‘the best performance we’ve had of all these live shows so far.’ By Gil Kaufman Michael Lynche Photo: Fox Praise from the “American Idol” judges is one thing, but tears? That’s when you know you’ve really nailed it. And big Michael Lynche definitely brought down the house Wednesday night (March 10) when he closed the top eight men’s live performances with a seductive, between-the-sheets cover of one of British singer Kate Bush’s most iconic tunes, “This Woman’s Work,” that made judge Kara DioGuardi openly weep. Wearing a black suit coat with a red pocket square, black tie, jeans and a white dress shirt, the brawny Lynche opened with a fragile, operatic falsetto vocalization over piano that sent chills. The choice was a bold one, as Bush is a beloved figure and the song is a tricky-to-sing modern classic has been used to dramatic effect in a number of TV shows over the years (“Felicity,” “Alias,” “Party of Five”). It was also famously covered by soul singer Maxwell on his 1997 MTV Unplugged album and later on his 2001 Now studio album, a version that clearly informed Lynche’s take on the song. Bush wrote it specifically for a sequence in the 1987 John Hughes film “She’s Having a Baby,” during which Kevin Bacon is pacing outside the delivery room where his wife is having their first child and he’s fretting about the changes they’re about to face and the rush of emotions he’s feeling. Making expert use of his breathy falsetto, Lynche, a new father whose firstborn arrived while he was toiling during Hollywood Week, wrenched every bit of emotion from the lyrics about life-changing events. “Ooh, it’s hard on the man/ Now his part is over/ Now starts the craft of the father,” he crooned in a clean, clear voice. On a night when the judges said some of the singers didn’t connect with their chosen lyrics, Lynche astutely picked a song that mirrored the tumultuous adult changes he’s going through in his personal life, helping to give the performance an added gravity and believability. As he leaned into the second verse, Lynche came out from behind the mic stand and began laying a gospel edge on the song, shaking his head and shoulders, bobbing up and down and waving his hands as if giving a Sunday sermon. With a long, sustained note on the line “Oh, darling, make it go,” Lynche provided the night’s much-needed “wow” moment and easily punched his ticket to the top 12. How good was it? DioGuardi was literally brought to tears. “I’ve never cried after hearing something like that,” she said, her voice cracking with emotion. “It’s amazing. You were amazing. And it’s so relevant for you, and I can feel it. It’s your life right now. It’s your respect for your wife, what you’ve gone through … and as a woman who doesn’t have a child, I can relate to it so much and it brought me to tears.” All Randy Jackson could say was, “Really?” telling Mike he was going to put Maxwell on notice that he should watch his back. “For everybody that doesn’t know, it was dope, it was unbelievable,” he said. “I wanna call Maxwell and tell him, ‘Yo, big Mike is knockin’ on the door, dog, be ready! But the last note? … I was like, what?” Ellen DeGeneres said it was so good it felt like the show had just begun and Lynche was suddenly the one to beat. “This was so needed tonight,” Simon Cowell said of the breath of fresh air on an otherwise-boring show. “You come out with an incredibly difficult song to sing and you 100 percent nailed it. Not just the best performance of the night, it’s the best performance we’ve had of all these live shows so far.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. ‘American Idol’ Judge Kara DioGuardi Talks Replacing Simon Cowell

‘It’s not an easy job,’ she says of judging the televised talent show. By Ryan J. Downey Kara DioGuardi Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images BEVERLY HILLS, California — The Rocket Man in the judge’s seat? At Elton John’s annual Oscars viewing party, Kara DioGuardi weighed in on rumors that the big party’s legendary host may replace Simon Cowell on “American Idol” next season. “It would be a very interesting replacement,” she told MTV News. “[Elton] is somebody who’s been wildly successful in music, who obviously knows a star when he sees one.” Reps for John (and the show) have denied that any specific talks have taken place; DioGuardi isn’t sure who’ll be joining her, Randy and Ellen when Cowell exits next year , but she’s optimistic about the changes ahead. “This is going to be a really interesting year when they pick that person, because they have to have music knowledge but they also have to be a star. It’s not an easy job,” added DioGuardi, who herself just joined the show last season. “I know people at home, they say, ‘Aw, that person sucked or ‘She’s great,’ and you can do it at home to your TV but once the camera’s on you, it’s like, ‘Oooh…’ ” DioGuardi will be in a great position to offer the new judge advice. It took her entire season to feel like she had found her voice on the show, so she’ll have plenty of pointers for whomever joins the show for Season 10. “I was not really happy about my performance last year. I was just getting used to being on television. I was so nervous and scared. I wasn’t really me. I wasn’t as focused and connected with the kids because I was going through my own fear of being on television. And this year, I kind of let go and I’m much more me. I can be more in tune with what they’re doing and worry about them and not worry about ‘Oh my god the camera is going to be on me in five minutes.’ ” And now? “I felt much better about this year.” Despite her newfound fame as a judge on one of the most popular television shows in history, DioGuardi is still surprised to be invited to major Hollywood events. “This one I was shocked to get an invite to,” she said of John’s event at the Pacific Design Center, a benefit for his AIDS awareness foundation, where Cowell was also in attendance alongside stars like Will.I.Am, Jennifer Hudson and Slash. “Because I don’t really consider myself a celebrity. I still consider myself a songwriter. “I’m lucky to be on that show. I mean, it’s opened up a whole new world to me and for me and for that I’m really appreciative — but I know my job is to judge. That’s really it.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Lindsay Lohan Suing E*Trade Over Super Bowl Ad

Lindsay Lohan is suing for $100 million from E*TRADE, believing that the “milkaholic” baby featured in their Super Bowl commercial was modeled after her. The ad features a baby named Lindsay, accused of being the other woman in a baby love triangle. We’d love to have been in the writers’ room for this one. At one point, the “girlfriend” baby demands to know whether or not the main baby was out doing some partying with “that milk-a-holic Lindsay” last night. A third baby pops into frame – supposedly “Lindsay” – and delivers the line “Milk-a-what?” Totally her. Anything “-holic” is a jab at Lohan, without a doubt. Naturally, Linds feels this “subliminal message” is defamatory. In response, the alleged actress has filed a lawsuit in Nassau County, N.Y., Supreme Court, claiming E*TRADE violated her

Simon Cowell Introduces Tonight Show Viewers to Mezhgan Hussainy

On The Tonight Show last night, Simon Cowell was his usual self: witty, charming and open about everything. First, he was asked about girlfriend Mezhgan Hussainy and told Jay Leno that he’ll marry her “within the next ten years. This prompted the unfunny host to actually invite Hussainy onto the stage with her man. She squeezed in close to Simon and laughed when he said: “I always said if I was going to get engaged, I’d get engaged to a makeup artist,” adding that he gets “at least three touch-ups a night,” if you know what Simon means! Simon on The Tonight Show About his plans for children, Simon replied: “I’m kind of torn because I’m a bit too old to have kids but then I think it would be awesome to have a lot of mes running around.” Among other topics Cowell goes into above: how much he misses Paula Abdul, whether they’ll work together again and why he likes Crystal Bowersox a lot this season.
