Chris Brown To Perform At Grammy Awards

Brown is slated to take the stage in his first Grammys appearance since 2009 assault, sources tell the A.P. By Jocelyn Vena Chris Brown Photo: Kevin Winter/ AMA2011/ Getty Images Chris Brown is ready to return to the Grammy Awards . Unnamed sources are telling the Associated Press that the singer will be one of the many performers taking the stage at Sunday’s show. It marks the first time he’ll appear on it since the 2009 incident when he assaulted his then-girlfriend Rihanna during Grammy weekend. That year both stars were scheduled to perform, but both canceled. Rihanna, however, has since appeared on the show. Despite being nominated in years since, Brown has not attended the ceremony. The performance is not meant to be formally announced prior to the show. Brown is up for three Grammys, including Best R&B Album for his 2011 opus, F.A.M.E., as well as Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for his track “Look At Me Now,” which also features Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes. Rihanna is also slated to attend on Sunday. She’s set to take the stage with Coldplay and is up for a handful of her own awards including Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for Loud as well Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for “What’s My Name?” which features Drake. Rihanna and Brown have recently denied rumors that they are romantically involved with one another. However, the twosome was spotted at the same Super Bowl party over the weekend in Los Angeles, though reportedly they didn’t cross paths. Rihanna and Brown won’t be the only two A-listers taking the stage at Sunday’s show. Adele, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Paul McCartney, Foo Fighters, Bruno Mars, Kelly Clarkson, Jason Aldean and Nicki Minaj are also confirmed to perform live at the 54th annual awards show, which will be hosted by LL Cool J and take place in Los Angeles. M.I.A.’s Super Bowl Middle Finger And More: A Career Of Controversy

From her support of the Tamil Tigers to her politically charged music videos, M.I.A. has never shied away from controversy. By James Montgomery M.I.A. performs at the Super Bowl XLVI Halftime Show Photo: Jeff Kravitz/Film Magic M.I.A.’s middle finger may currently be the most-discussed digit in America, dominating the post-Super Bowl chatter and earning swift rebukes from NBC and the NFL. But for those who’ve covered her career from the beginning, well, let’s just say this is basically par for the course. Because ever since M.I.A. first broke through in 2004, she’s courted controversy, first for her outspoken support of the Tamil Tigers , the Sri Lankan separatist organization that engaged in acts of terror and has been linked to the assassination of Sri Lankan and Indian leaders. That support and her overtly political lyrics led to her being denied a travel visa by the U.S. government and earned her a spot on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s risk list in 2006. So, really, a middle finger is no big thing. And over the past few years, she hasn’t exactly mellowed. In 2010, she raised eyebrows with the graphic video for “Born Free,” a clip that saw security forces (with American flags prominently displayed) round up red-headed citizens and summarily execute them in brutal fashion. It was a savage bit of socio-political commentary, though most missed that message entirely, focusing instead on the blood and guts, which earned the video a measure of YouTube ignominy and had < href=" http://"www.cnn.com/2010/SHOWBIZ/Music/04/27/mia.music.video/index.html?iref=allsearch" target="_blank"> critics howling . Her outspoken ways also drew the ire of both Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber fans, after she called Gaga “a good mimic” and said the content of “Born Free” was no less offensive than anything Bieber had churned out. And then, she launched a lengthy (and much-covered) offensive against New York Times writer Lynn Hirschberg, posting her phone number on Twitter and releasing a diss song called “I’m a Singer” after reading what she believed to be an unflattering feature in the Times . Though Hirschberg remained largely silent on the matter, the Times did eventually admit that a pair of M.I.A.’s quotes were rearranged in the piece. Finally, earlier this month, she unveiled the video for “Bad Girls,” which re-teamed her with “Born Free” director Romain Gavras and is loaded with socially (and politically) charged imagery, like women cloaked in burqas doing stunts in expensive cars as men in keffiyeh look on, smoldering oil fields and assault rifles. Madonna Halftime Show: The Reviews Are In!

Super Bowl performance reinstates Madge as ‘the biggest pop vixen on the planet.’ By Jocelyn Vena Madonna performs at Super Bowl XLVI Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Madonna did it all on Sunday night when she performed during the Super Bowl halftime show in Indianapolis. She was an Egyptian Queen “Vogue”-ing it up for her biggest devotees. She was a cheerleader, cheering on L-U-V alongside a middle-finger flinging M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj for “Give Me All Your Luvin’.” She got her “Music” on with LMFAO and she sang the gospel of “Like a Prayer” with Cee Lo Green. In a sea of costume changes (with looks by Givenchy and Adidas Originals Jeremy Scott), dancers, acrobats, A-list collaborators and a killer set list, Madonna seemed to leave very little to chance. Sure, there were a few slip-ups , but, in the end, Madonna ensured that all anyone would be talking about around the water cooler come Monday morning was her, whether or not you completely loved what she did during the show. “It’s Madonna Louise Ciccone’s world, we’re just living in it,” Billboard.com wrote about her 12-minute-plus performance. “The pop icon took to the world’s biggest stage to rock three-and-a-half older tracks and a playful new song during the Super Bowl halftime show.” While the Super Bowl audience is usually dominated by people who most likely aren’t Madge fans, the singer, according to one review, seemed indifferent to that fact. “Madonna was defiantly unconcerned with the more conservative red state wing of the football fanbase who’d never be caught dead singing along to one of her songs,” the Los Angeles Times noted about her performance. “And her halftime show was pure spectacle by the Cleopatra of the game.” The show, according to the Chicago Tribune , wasn’t just about her, but also about reminding fans that she’s about to drop her next album, MDNA, in March. “This was Madonna’s party, and besides breaking off bits of her greatest hits to remind people of a time when she was the biggest pop vixen on the planet, she had important career-advancing work to do,” the review noted. “Madonna, after all, never does anything unless she’s got something to sell, and with a new studio album due out in March and a tour to follow, she had plenty on her to-do list.” Leave your review of Madonna’s halftime performance in the comments below! ‘Smash’ And ‘Glee’ Are ‘Very Different,’ Megan Hilty Says

‘The glaring similarity is that we both have musical numbers in the show, but that’s about it,’ ‘Smash’ star tells MTV News. By Christina Garibaldi Megan Hilty in “Smash” Photo: NBC It’s safe to assume that if you’re watching the Super Bowl on Sunday night (February 5), you will see several promos for NBC’s newest musical drama, “Smash,” which premieres Monday. The show centers on two potential Broadway stars — played by former “American Idol” runner-up Katharine McPhee and newcomer Megan Hilty — who are competing for the lead role in a musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. “Smash” has it all: flashy musical numbers, well-choreographed dance routines and, of course, entertaining drama. Does that all sound a little similar to Fox’s hit show “Glee”? Not so fast, says Hilty, who told MTV News the two shows couldn’t be more different. “Obviously, the glaring similarity is that we both have musical numbers in the show, but that’s about it that we have in common,” Hilty said. “We’re very different in tone and theme and pretty much everything. We’re kind of like a glam soap opera with some splashy musical elements in between.” But Hilty admits that if it weren’t for “Glee,” “Smash” might have never gotten off the ground. “Thank God for ‘Glee,’ because they really opened doors for our show, specifically, to make it possible for us to do this,” Hilty said. “They made it socially acceptable and even cool to love the arts, and hopefully our show will do the same, but they really were the people who started that and busted down those doors, so thank God for that.” Hilty’s co-star, McPhee, agrees. “We’re just actually really grateful that ‘Glee’ has opened the door,” McPhee told MTV News on the Golden Globes red carpet last month. Will you be watching “Smash”? Let us know in the comments!

Kelly Clarkson’s National Anthem Kicks Off Super Bowl

‘Star Spangled Banner’ was preceded by Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton performing ‘America the Beautiful.’ By James Dinh Kelly Clarkson performs at Super Bowl 46 Photo: Ezra Shaw/ Getty Images Kelly Clarkson rose to fame singing on national television, so it’s no surprise that the original “American Idol” champ soared high with her rendition of the national anthem at Super Bowl XLVI on Sunday night (February 5). Wearing a sleek black dress, Miss Independent stood confidently on a small blue-and-white stage at the showdown between the New England Patriots and New York Giants at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. As Clarkson belted out “The Star Spangled Banner” alongside a full marching band and a crowd of children, cameras panned to several members of the teams as they looked toward the sky. Proving herself as a true big-voiced diva, the singer hit all the right notes, adding in some signature riffing at the end of the song. Even though her performance went smooth, KC admitted having some early jitters about singing the patriotic tune. On Friday, she took to her Who Say account to share her two cents about rehearsal time: “Just finished rehearsing the anthem in Indy … wow, I’m actually really nervous about singing at the Super Bowl ha!” she wrote. “Here’s hoping I nail it and don’t screw it up!” Clarkson’s performance was preceded by country music couple Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton, who delivered a duet of “America the Beautiful” during pre-game festivities. Miley Cyrus Defends Gay Marriage Beliefs, Tattoo

Miley Cyrus has gone very public with her defense of gay marriage. In July of last year, the singer got a tattoo (below) on her finger that she posted on Twitter, along with the caption “All LOVE is Equal.” She got a lot of flak for the move, criticism she’s now responding to via an editorial in Glamor . “A lot of people mocked me,” Miley writes. “They said, ‘What happened to you? You used to be a Christian girl!’ And I said, ‘Well, if you were a true Christian, you would have your facts straight. Christianity is about love.'” Cyrus is speaking out now on the topic, she says, due to the “unnecessary threats” leveled at both her and her supporters. She adds: “I believe every American should be allowed the same rights and civil liberties. Without legalized same-sex marriage, most of the time you cannot share the same health benefits, you are not considered next of kin and you are not granted the same securities as a heterosexual couple. How is this different than having someone sit in the back of the bus because of their skin color?” It’s just not right , Miley concludes of the argument that homosexual couples are somehow held to a different standard than heterosexual couples. “We all should be tolerant of one another and embrace our differences,” she writes. No doubt Cyrus will fall under fire once again for making her beliefs on this controversial subject well known, which is exactly why we admire her so much for doing so.

Rihanna: Topless! Blonde! Tweeting!

An apparently topless Rihanna showed off her long blonde hair on Twitter last night. She’s rocked everything from massive red curls to a platinum bob with blunt bangs in the past couple of months. Now, she’s debuted yet another dramatic ‘do. Which really looks good with no shirt: The 23-year-old singer tweeted the pic of herself sporting a long, layered blonde style (and not much else!) along with the following message: “#Back2Work 1st Cover of the year!!! #ELLE,” followed by “Bleach + weave #WERQ.” Later that night she sat courtside at L.A.’s Staples Center to watch the Clippers (bet you didn’t hear THAT three years ago) beat the Nuggets, turning heads with her new locks. What do you think of Rihanna’s blonde hair?

Adam Lambert to Front Queen Tour This Summer

He is the champion, our friends. Adam Lambert will join iconic band Queen on tour this summer, both sides announced this week, a development that follows the singer’s 2009 American Idol finale performance with original members Brian May and Roger Taylor; as well as their teaming up again at the MTV European Music Awards in November. “The intention is to pay tribute to [late singer Freddie Mercury] and the band by singing some f-cking great songs,” Lambert tells Great Britain’s The Daily Star. “It’s to keep the music alive for the fans and give it an energy that Freddie would have been proud of.” Lambert, of course, admits that he has no intention of replacing Mercury, who passed away from AIDS in 1991. “That’s impossible,” he said. “The way I’m choosing to view it is that it’s a great honor and one I’m in no way going to shirk.” Adam and the group will tour in May and stop at Knebworth in England, where Queen played their final gig with Mercury in 1986.
