Adele Remembers Etta James As ‘The Ultimate Original’

‘It’s an honour every time I hear her voice,’ Adele writes of the late singer. By Jocelyn Vena Adele Photo: Andreas Rentz/ Getty Images Days after legendary songstress Etta James passed away from complications of leukemia, Adele took to her blog to recall the great influence the singer has had on her. “What a lady Etta James was. She was the ultimate original,” she said, recalling her own encounter with the icon. “Her voice was breath taking and her songs are reflections we all recognise in some way or another. It’s an honour every time I hear her voice. I saw her at BB Kings in New York a few years ago, and it was something I will remember forever. Thank you to Etta James. And I send all my love to her family and friends.” Since the news broke of James’ death, many big-voiced divas have opened up about the influence she had on them. “Etta James was a force to be reckoned with. A true gift to music and a woman of great spirit and courage. Her raw tone and the passion she put forth on a record spoke to me at a very young age and has continued to influence and inspire me throughout my career,” Christina Aguilera said in a statement. “She will NEVER be forgotten, her voice will forever live on and she will inspire talent for generations to come.” Beyonc

Lana Del Rey: ‘I Don’t Love Live Television’

Before ‘Saturday Night Live,’ singer said, ‘You can’t expect too much.’ By Gil Kaufman Lana Del Rey on “Saturday Night Live” Photo: NBC It’s been a rough few days for singer Lana Del Rey. Her instantly legendary awkward network TV debut on “Saturday Night Live”
has been dissected, dissed and defended endlessly since last weekend. But the one thing we haven’t heard in the wake of the polarizing performance is how Del Rey feels about how she did. While she still hasn’t officially commented on the criticism, the singer spoke to the Fuse network just days before the “SNL” gig and said that, frankly, live performance is not really her thing. “You can’t expect too much from my show,” Del Rey said, explaining that her real fans are probably aware that she’s more of a songwriter and studio musician than performer and that she thinks people who come to see her show are really just there to hear the songs they already like. “Sometimes I feel less nervous than other times,” she added. “I don’t love live television. The only tip I have is just pray and just hope that things work out.” That attitude pretty much fits what Del Rey told MTV News
before “SNL,” when she said she finds singing on TV “weird.” “[It] depends on the day,” Del Rey said. “Depends on what’s going on with my family and everyone around me. If I have other things to think about, or I’m trying to get things done for somebody else, and I’m not in my own way, then … I’m like, ‘This doesn’t really matter.’ Sometimes it seems more important to me than other times.” And though everyone from “NBC Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams to actress Eliza Dushku and singer/actress Juliette Lewis (whose tweets have since been deleted) piled on Del Rey in the moment, since the dust has settled a bit, another actress has come out in defense of the singer. “Whitney” star and stand-up comedian Whitney Cummings, who faced her fair share of criticism when her NBC sitcom debuted last year, posted a blog on Thursday in which she pleaded with haters to chill out. “I have many random thoughts. First, everybody calm down,” she wrote. “It’s a little troubling that when a young girl fails at something that we keep kicking her why she is down. I get very protective of girls, especially young performers, because they live a hard, emotionally challenging, often physically challenging life where you are constantly given reasons to be insecure and have panic attacks. I totally get the stuff about her not deserving to be there and I don’t mean to insult musicians in any way if that’s how they feel obviously, but this is an opportunity to show us how hard being a performer is so maybe they can all be cut some slack.” Cummings honed her act for years on the stand-up circuit before breaking through last year with her sitcom and a producer and co-creator credit on “2 Broke Girls,” and she said she doesn’t feel qualified to judge Del Rey’s performance. “It takes a long time to get good, and even when you are good, you can be challenged by new venues and being televised, and cameras, and the uh…fear and terror of being slammed by critics and bloggers,” she wrote. “Plus if you are a woman you also get fashion criticism and if you’re a pretty woman you’re accused of having plastic surgery and if you’re not you’re ‘busted’ and people blog about how they don’t want to f— you … it’s not ideal.” Add into that mix the self-hate and self-criticism that many artists have, and Cummings said even when things go perfectly, it’s still hard. “So when it goes bad, it’s just the worst vortex of misery,” she said. “If she fell on her face, she was there, she felt it, and her having lived it is punishment enough. We don’t need to keep bashing her unless it makes us feel better about ourselves which … isn’t an ideal reason to hate someone.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Lana Del Rey Related Artists Lana Del Rey

Adam Lambert Labels Finland Fight "Childish, Irresponsible" [Video]

He’s already issued a couple statements on the incident , but Adam Lambert sat down with Ellen DeGeneres this week and addressed his fight with boyfriend Sauli Koskinen for the first time in person. A quick refresher: Lambert and Koskinen were both arrested in late 2011 after they engaged in a drunken brawl just prior to Christmas. “We had too much to drink. We screwed up,” the singer told the host. “There were no injuries, no violence. It was more of childish, foolish, messiness… I was a little irresponsible and I think what I learned from the experience was that I owe it to myself, to my loved ones, and to my fans to be a little more adult and pull it together.” As seen below, Adam concludes that his New Year’s resolution was to clean up his act and he now feels “amazing.” Adam Lambert Ellen Interview: About That Fight…

Katy Perry Flies High At First Post-Divorce Show

Newly single pop star soars above the crowd in Indonesia during California Dreams Tour stop. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry performs in Jakarta, Indonesia on Thursday Photo: Splash News Katy Perry re-emerged Thursday (January 19) for her first concert since announcing her split with husband of one year, Russell Brand . The concert, which took place at the Sentul International Convention Centre in Jakarta, Indonesia, was the first of the two final shows on her California Dreams Tour. In video from the gig, Perry removed the wedding footage she typically showed during her performance of the Teenage Dream track “Not Like the Movies,” during which she sits on a swing while singing the dreamy ballad. For the revamped performance , the singer instead showed vintage-looking cartoons of animals as a placeholder, while swinging around in a red-and-white, candy-cane-striped gown. Check out photos of Katy’s spectacular concert looks. While she had been sporting short, blue hair as of late, for the show, she was wearing her signature black hair with Bettie Page bangs. Two days prior to hitting the stage, Perry shared her excitement for the show on Twitter , writing, “I’m SO EXCITED to FINALLY be in INDONESIA! U guys have waited forever #timetodeliver.” Hours before she took the stage, she had one more message for her fans when she tweeted, “It’s the day of the show y’all! Can’t WAIT! #JAKARTADREAMS.” The performance comes one week after she was snapped on the set of an Adidas commercial donning bright-blue hair and some threads designed by Jeremy Scott for the athletic brand. She has another show Monday in Manila, Philippines. She is also up for two awards at the Grammys , set to take place February 12. At last year’s show, the singer made a grand romantic gesture when she debuted footage from her Indian wedding to Brand during the broadcast. It was the first time anyone had seen any video from their nuptials. Did you catch Katy’s California Dreams Tour? Share your reviews in the comments! Cee Lo’s ‘Anyway’ Is ‘A Little Dark,’ Wallpaper. Says

Party starter worked with Weezer singer Rivers Cuomo on sultry single. By Gil Kaufman Cee Lo Green Photo: Jay West/ Getty Images You’ve probably heard Wallpaper.’s music on “Jersey Shore,” and maybe you saw him tagged as one of Buzzworthy’s 11 artists to watch in 2012 . The brainchild of rapper/songwriter/remixer Ricky Reed began as an attempt to bring some lighthearted fun to dance music with songs like “F—ing Best Song Everrr” and “#STUPiDFACEDD.” But after gaining attention with a sax-blasting remix of Das Racist’s “Combination Pizza Hut & Taco Bell,” remixes of songs by Passion Pit and Local Natives, and an album and EP of party-starting originals, he’s hooked up with two music legends for a deceptively tossed-off-sounding song called “Anyway.” “The hook wasn’t right, you know, and every song needs a great hook, so who better than [Weezer singer/songwriter] Rivers Cuomo to come in and finish it up for us?” Reed said of his collabo with the geek-rock icon on Cee Lo Green ‘s recently released sultry single. The tune — co-produced and co-written by Wallpaper. — appeared on the platinum edition of Green’s Lady Killer album, released last month. Getting to share a writing credit with Cuomo was yet another career highlight for Oakland, California’s Reed, who signed with major label Epic Records late last year after a meeting with Epic CEO and “X Factor” judge L.A. Reid. “It’s a little dark,” he said of the Green song, in which the singer recounts his many flaws. “In the co-write, I did a lot of the verse lyric, then Rivers came in with this really sentimental hook, which is kind of what the song needed. … It needed to balance out. If there’s anybody to be sentimental, it’s Rivers, and if there’s anyone to be f—ed up, it’s me.” What do you think of the collaboration? Let us know in the comments!
