Lady Gaga Talks Grammy ‘Vessel,’ Born This Way Details

Mother Monster teases in a radio interview that ‘Born This Way’ is ‘just the beginning of this album.’ By Jocelyn Vena Lady gaga arrives at the 2011 Grammys on Sunday Photo: MTV News Lady Gaga called in to Ryan Seacrest’s radio show on Tuesday morning (February 15) and opened up about the “Born This Way” “roller coaster” she finds herself on these days. She also talked about that now-famous egg-like “vessel” in which she arrived to the Grammys on Sunday. “Only I would pull up to an awards show in a giant industrial-sized truck,” she explained about the vehicle that brought her and her unusual container to the big event. “I was in [the vessel] for about 72 hours and it was a very creative experience and it was time for me to prepare and really think about the meaning of the song. I really wanted to be born onstage.” Gaga finally emerged from her egg thingy when she took the stage at the Grammys to perform her new single live for the first time. “It was such a magical moment. I can’t even say enough about the joy that I felt singing ‘Born This Way’ on that stage,” she gushed. “We were just so emotional and so excited and I put so much hard work into creating the performance, designing it. I really have spent a tremendous amount of time dancing and working on becoming a better dancer … It’s important to me, if I want to someday be remembered as a great, great artist, I think I have to do what all the greats did — I’ve got to sing and dance live at the same time.” As for her unusual Whitney Houston shout-out during the ceremony, Gaga explains that it was a thank-you a long time in the making. “I can’t tell you how much I listened to her growing up,” she explained. “She was my vocal idol for so many years. I thought of her voice when I wrote [‘Born This Way’], because she’s just such an incredible singer. I sort of planned to thank her a long time ago, at some point. I said, ‘If I ever win a Grammy I’m gonna thank Whitney’ … so I did.” During the chat with Seacrest, Gaga also gave more details about her album, Born This Way , which comes out May 23. “The next single is called ‘Judas,’ ” she confirmed ( Vogue originally reported the news about this track, which was produced by RedOne ). “And that will be out a couple weeks before the album.” As for the LP as a whole, the singer said, “It’s eclectic. I wouldn’t tell everyone to expect lots of the same kind of songs like ‘Born This Way.’ I explore lots of different genres in tandem with dance music and electronic music and industrial music. I have expanded even further in that area, and I’m so very proud of it.” Later on the conversation, Gaga reiterated, “The great news is ‘Born This Way’ is just the beginning of this album. It’s certainly not even the biggest hit on the album. You have to hear the rest of the record. I don’t want to boast about it, because I am humble about what I do, but it’s a great album and I can’t wait to share each and every song with my fans.” Related Photos Lady Gaga’s Grammy Night Lady Gaga Knows How To Make An Entrance Related Artists Lady Gaga

Skylar Grey Breaks Out With Dre, Eminem Grammy Performance

Singer is in spotlight after haunting rendition of chorus on ‘I Need a Doctor.’ By Aly Semigran Skylar Grey at the 2011 Grammy Awards Photo: Jason Merrit/ Getty Images Many Grammy viewers might have asked themselves the same question several times during Sunday night’s ceremony: Who was that? In addition to Best New Artist winner Esperanza Spalding , another woman who hit the stage of the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards had plenty of viewers wondering who she was: first-time nominee and performer Skylar Grey, who took to the stage with Eminem and Dr. Dre during their intense set . As it turns out, the Wisconsin-born Grey, whose real name is Holly Brook Hafermann, already has a long hip-hop r

Snooki And Bruno Mars Flirt At The Grammys

‘I got love for Snooki. I want the world to know that,’ the ‘Just the Way You Are’ singer announces on the red carpet. By Eric Ditzian Bruno Mars at the 2011 Grammy Awards Photo: Jason Merrit/ Getty Images Love was in the air on the pre-Valentine’s Day red carpet at the 53rd Grammy Awards on Sunday night, and MTV News guest correspondent Snooki was at the center of the action. The “Jersey Shore” star asked Drake to serenade her, wondered if Jay Sean would offer to smush her and asked Bruno Mars if they might ever end up in a relationship together. Judging by Mars’ reaction, he just might be down, because when the “Just the Way You Are” singer stopped to chat with Snooki, the two couldn’t quit paying tribute to each other. “I’m very, very excited [by] everything that you’re doing,” she told him. “You’re probably the greatest songwriter I’ve ever seen. And I’m not lying.” Mars then announced to the camera, “I got love for Snooki. I want the world to know that.” The pint-sized party girl responded by saying, “Yay! Can you see us as a couple?” And then the two went into some impromptu fist-pumping, which is almost grounds for legal marriage in Seaside Heights. At the Staples Center in Los Angeles, though, Mars already had enough on his mind. He was up for seven nominations, including Best Rap Song (“Nothin’ on You”), Song of the Year (“F— You”) and Record of the Year (“Nothin’ on You”). By the end of the night, though, he only came out on top in one category: Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for “Just the Way You Are.” But at least for a few minutes, the singer/songwriter was able to wipe away any nervous energy about the impending awards and throw his hand in the air alongside Snooki. “Oh yeah, that’s hot. I love it,” she said. “You look good tonight. Just sayin’.” Snooki then asked Mars what he was doing after the big show, and he responded, “I don’t know. Why don’t you hit me up when the cameras are gone, you know what I’m saying? You could just kick it.” What do you think about a Snooki-Bruno Mars hook-up? Share your opinions in the comments. Esperanza Spalding’s Wikipedia Page Attacked By Justin Bieber Fans

Following jazz musician’s surprise Grammy win, false statements, taunts added to page. By Eric Ditzian, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway Esperanza Spalding accepts the Best New Artist award at the 2011 Grammy Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Beware the wrath of a Justin Bieber fan scorned. After the 16-year-old phenom — and, for that matter, Drake, Florence and the Machine and Mumford & Sons — lost the Best New Artist award to Esperanza Spalding at the Grammys on Sunday, the little-known jazz singer found herself a target of the Beliebers. Spalding’s Wikipedia page was attacked following her Grammy win, as random facts, misstatements and taunts were added to the site and then quickly removed. After a sentence noting her victory, for example, a user added the statement, “Justin Bieber deserved it go die in a hole. Who the heck are you anyway?” In other places, the singer’s middle name was changed to both “Justin” and “Quesadilla” and her Grammy win was written up with the addendum, “Even though no one has ever heard of her! Yay!” At the end of her biography, one user wrote, “Biber 4 Lyfe.” Bieber himself shared in his fans’ frustration, telling MTV News on Sunday night, “I’m not going to lie — I was disappointed. But, you know, I’m gonna come back [next year] and we’ll take a few home.” Unlike the Wikipedia hackers, however, the “Baby” singer showed no bitterness whatsoever when he ran into Spalding backstage at the Staples Center. The two artists shook hands and Bieber congratulated Spalding on the victory. “I was one of those [surprised] people,” Spalding told us backstage. “It was so unexpected, that’s the truth. I’m grateful to all my people in my big musical family that have given me so much support and help over the years. I don’t really think this is for me; it’s for all of us. And I wish they could all be here to put one finger on this with me.” For more Grammy Awards analysis, interviews, fashion and more, stick with MTV News. Britney Spears Made A Name For Herself With ‘… Baby One More Time’ Video

In anticipation of the premiere of Britney’s ‘Hold It Against Me’ video, we look back at her iconic 1998 clip. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears in “Baby One More Time” Photo: Jive Records It’s hard to believe that in 1998 a schoolgirl uniform caused so much trouble, but that’s just what happened when a pouty Britney Spears donned the now infamous costume in her video for “… Baby One More Time.” Well, it seems Britney had some idea that the costume idea would make the video memorable. “My idea originally was just jeans and T-shirts, and we were at the wardrobe fitting and Britney holds up the jeans and T-shirts and says, ‘Wouldn’t I wear a schoolgirl outfit?’ ” the video’s director, Nigel Dick, told MTV News in 2009 . “Every piece of wardrobe in the video came from Kmart, and I was told at the time not one piece of clothing in the video cost more than $17. On that level, it’s real. That probably, in retrospect, is a part of its charm.” In 2000, Spears spoke to MTV News about baring her belly in the clip, noting that it felt like the most natural thing in the world to do. “Me showing my belly? I’m from the South: You’re stupid if you don’t wear a sports bra [when you] go to dance class, you’re going to be sweating your butt off,” she explained. “It was such a wonderful experience. All these people there, working for you. I had my own trailer. It was an amazing experience.” Spears was then an unknown pop singer and Dick had already established himself as a music video guru. The decision to work with Spears left many perplexed. “My response was, ‘It’s a great song. I don’t know anything about Britney. I never watched ‘The Mickey Mouse Club.’ She seems like a great kid and she’s very enthusiastic,’ ” he said. “But I just love the song. It’s just a great song. “I decided to try this idea that someone had thrown at me and they hated it — they absolutely hated it,” Dick said about the video’s simple setup. “So I jumped on the phone with Britney and she says, ‘Well, now I think it should be about me in school and there should be lots of hot boys around,’ and that was pretty much it — oh, and a bunch of dancing. And my response was, ‘OK.’ ” In a 1998 interview with MTV, Spears revealed that she wanted the video to reflect the lives of her fans, so she wanted to set it in a school. “The first idea we had for the video was so off the wall,” she said. “I was like, ‘I want something a lot of kids can relate to.’ It’s just a fun video.” That same year she noted that as soon as she heard the song, she knew she had to record it. “It’s a song every girl can relate to,” she said. The song was recently featured in the “Britney/Brittany” episode of the hit show “Glee,” with Lea Michele playing the Britney schoolgirl role. Before Britney Spears debuts her music video for “Hold It Against Me” on February 17 on MTV, MTV News is taking a look back at some of the singer’s most memorable videos. The new much-anticipated clip will air on MTV and MTV.com Thursday at 9:56 p.m./ET, right before a new episode of “Jersey Shore.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Britney Spears

Arcade Fire Rock Out For Grammy Finale Performances

Album of the Year winners transform stage into BMX skate park on indie band’s big night. By Aly Semigran Arcade Fire perform at 2011 Grammy Awards Photo: Getty Images Just two days after their anti-Grammy party in Los Angeles, the Arcade Fire shifted gears and played for a worldwide audience on the Grammy stage on Sunday night (February 13). Check out photos of Arcade Fire’s performance and more! The indie darlings not only performed twice during the ceremony, they also walked away with the Album of the Year award for their sweeping chart-topper The Suburbs. “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” star Jason Segel introduced the Montreal natives, who were making their first-ever Grammy appearance. They kicked things off with their raucous, rolling “Month of May.” The eight-member group, led by lead singer Win Butler, welcomed a gaggle of BMX riders — some sporting POV cameras to capture the broadcast for fans — to the Grammy stage, which was then transformed into something of a rock-and-roll skate park. The Arcade Fire gave a loud, but not overly flashy performance that was a fitting end to an evening chock-full of big numbers. But as it turned out, the song was a precursor to an even bigger moment. Minutes after the band’s performance of the arena-ready “Month of May,” Kris Kristofferson and Barbra Streisand appeared onstage to announce the evening’s final and most prestigious award: Album of the Year. Besting mainstream acts Eminem, Lady Antebellum, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, a visibly stunned Arcade Fire emerged from backstage to accept the award, pulling off one of the evening’s biggest upsets. “What the hell!” an amazed Butler said. Apparently the singer’s excitement got the best of him, as he was bleeped presumably for using strong language later on in his acceptance speech. The newly anointed Grammy winner thanked the crowd and announced, “We’re going to go play another song, ’cause we like music!” A man of his word, Butler and his musical ensemble immediately took to their bevy of instruments — Butler placed their Grammy on one of the amps — and played again. Finally, Butler thanked his parents and told the Grammy audience they could exit to the next tune as they began the toe-tapping, head-bobbing Suburbs single “Ready to Start.” In spite of his instructions to the crowd, the attendees seemed happy to stick around for the infectious number. Katy Perry Shares Russell Brand Wedding Footage At Grammys

Singer projects images from her October vow-swap in India while singing ‘Teenage Dream’ and ‘Not Like the Movies.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Katy Perry performs during the 2011 Grammy Awards Photo: The Recording Academy/CBS Katy Perry teased fans about her Grammy performance Saturday with the tweet , “Tomorrow is Grammy’s & boy oh boy do I have a very special performance ready for you. CLUE: The theme is looooooovvvvveeee,” and true to her word, the singer dished out a very personal and intimate pre-Valentine’s Day performance. Check out photos of Katy Perry’s performance and more! Dangling on a swing in a pale-pink, princess-like frock, Perry began with the Teenage Dream ballad “Not Like the Movies.” The singer was then lifted into the air as she began to belt the lyrics, revealing the swing was attached to a giant white drape that filled up the expanse of the stage. As Perry continued to croon about finding the perfect guy, grainy footage from her grand October nuptials to British comedian Russell Brand projected across the drape, showing Perry in her bridal gown kissing her new husband, which was the first time the couple shared any images from their wedding publicly. After the heartfelt tribute, Perry switched back to the vampy, cheeky pop sensation we’ve come to know, proclaiming, “This one goes out to all the Valentine lovers!” as crimson-clad dancers invaded the stage for “Teenage Dream.” Actress Nicole Kidman sang along in the audience as Perry belted the track on a set outfitted with neon heart-shaped set pieces and monitors dappled with heart-shaped candy pieces. With Sunday night’s (February 13) Grammy performance behind her, Perry is gearing up for her upcoming California Dreams Tour . The poptress recently said she’s deep into preparations for the summertime trek, which will cross the country until August. “It’s like training for the Olympics. I’m off to the gym to build stamina … and I hate working out, but I have to go, because this is a really energetic show,” she said. “It’s not like I’m going to make my fortune off touring; I’m basically doing this as a big IOU for all the love and support I’ve gotten. I need to go shake some hands and kiss some people.” What did you think about Katy Perry’s Grammy performance? Let us know in the comments! Lady Gaga Arrives At Grammys In An Egg

Stylist Nicola Formichetti tweets that the singer is in incubation on the red carpet. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga arrives at the 2011 Grammy Awards Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty Images Lady Gaga’s arrival at the 53rd Grammy Awards had the world buzzing quite early on Sunday evening (February 13). The songstress, who premiered her new song “Born This Way” on Friday, hit the Grammys in a semi-see-through egg that seemed like something of an arty reference to that song’s title. Check out pictures of Lady Gaga’s Grammy arrival here. Outdoing the space-age Armani Prive getup she wore to last year’s Grammys, Gaga was in the egg as she emerged from a truck and was carried by four men in yellow boxers and dresses to the carpet. Her Twitter page gave a bit of insight into what Gaga might be up to on Sunday. “This is Nicola, Haus of Gaga: Gaga is in incubation,” stylist Nicola Formichetti tweeted on the singer’s page. “Tonight’s performance is in collaboration with Hussein Chalayan and House of Mugler. X” Formichetti also wrote about Gaga’s big arrival on his own Twitter account. “Grammys red carpet,” he tweeted. “Lady gaga wears Mugler by nicola formichetti . Womb by hussein Chalayan. Gaga’s pryers are in haus of gaga in collaboration with Mugler. My baby is been born.” Lady Gaga is set to perform her new song live during the Grammy telecast. The singer is up for six awards on Sunday night including Album of the Year, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals, Best Pop Vocal Album, Best Dance Recording and Best Short Form Music Video.
