Justin Bieber’s Magazine Covers Chart His Meteoric Rise

Teen sensation’s Vanity Fair cover follows a spate of increasingly high-profile mag appearances. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber on February cover of Vanity Fair Photo: Art Streiber / Conde Nast Justin Bieber first appeared on teen magazines like J-14 and Tiger Beat alongside fellow idols like the Jonas Brothers, but Bieber quickly established himself as a marquee cover boy. He was soon being profiled by industry publications like Billboard and embraced by mainstream mags like People. Bieber’s first big solo cover was the March 27, 2010, issue of Billboard. On the cover, Bieber sported a cardigan and those signature bangs while holding up a boom box. That appearance was quickly followed by his April 19, 2010, People magazine cover, which came out just weeks after the release of his My World 2.0. Early on, Bieber proved he was comfortable on shoots. “He’s always been a natural in front of the camera,” said Melissa Victor, VP, Media & Artist Relations at Island Def Jam Music Group. “I don’t think that kid can take a bad frame.” By the summer, Bieber was making headlines as teen magazines began proclaiming they had “Bieber Fever.” He covered Seventeen ‘s June/July issue and Teen Vogue ‘s October edition. “He has very strong ideas of how he wants to look,” Victor said of the Island Def Jam artist’s visual evolution. “His mom is already working on a scrapbook of all his covers,” she revealed. “She requests every single cover no matter how big or small; everything from J-14 to People magazine.” In addition to making the covers of some of the entertainment industry’s most popular magazines, the singer also scored some memorable profiles in places like VMAN, Interview and Elle, in which he waded on the beach with Kim Kardashian . With his latest cover for Vanity Fair, Bieber shows he’s growing in terms of his public image, from teen heartthrob to pop superstar — one who can be appreciated by both teens and adults. “Justin loves his core audience but it is important for him to continue to evolve as an artist, and with that evolution we want to insure that more and more people of all ages embrace his music,” she said. “It is great that these magazines have been there to chronicle his journey.” 2011 already looks to be a massive year for Bieber , and Vanity Fair is just the beginning. “He so honored and excited to grace the cover of Vanity Fair . He knows he is in great company, he doesn’t take it for granted at all,” Victor said. “This is has been a great way to kick off the New Year. But this is just the beginning. His fans can rest assured they will continue to get their ‘Bieber Fix.’ ” What do you think of Justin’s Vanity Fair cover? Tell us in the comments! Gwyneth Paltrow Sings With Cee Lo, Covers Taylor Swift On ‘SNL’

Pee Wee Herman and Anderson Cooper turn up in a digital short about boozy debauchery. By Mawuse Ziegbe Cee Lo, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jason Sudeikis perform on “SNL” Jan. 15 Photo: NBC When Cee Lo promised that he and Gwyneth Paltrow would be cranking out some musical moments when they both turned up on “Saturday Night Live,” he wasn’t playing around. The Lady Killer singer hit the stage twice, but he also showed off his comedic chops by popping up alongside Gwyneth in three different sketches. The “Closet Freak” singer wasted no time getting on with the funny business, by first turning up in Paltrow’s opening monologue. After the “Country Strong” star pumped up her country-music knowledge, including hits by the “lady with the hair and the big boobs,” Jason Sudeikis appeared as white-haired legend Kenny Rogers for his classic duet with “the boob lady” — also known as Dolly Parton — “Islands in the Stream.” After Paltrow flubbed the lyrics, Cee Lo sauntered onstage to join the duo, who all belted the lines perfectly. Although they didn’t share the mic, Paltrow and Cee Lo also showed up in a sketch about a bar mitzvah with tons of A-list performers rocking Jewish-friendly versions of their hits. Cee Lo, of course, played himself, rocking a full-length fur and swapping out “Forget You” for “Hebrew.” Paltrow played up her country connection by appearing as Taylor Swift and putting a Jewish twist on “You Belong With Me” with lyrics about Mel Brooks and shopping at Loehmann’s. Paltrow also hooked Cee Lo up with an extra-special introduction to his first performance, appearing in a skit as a record executive grappling with how to market the Gnarls Barkley vocalist’s potty-mouth single. Although, in this office, “forget” is a bad word, and Paltrow’s co-workers gasp when she spews things like, “Are you forgetting kidding me?” When Cee Lo strolls in, he greets everyone with “What’s up, motherforgetters?” and adds that he’s “feeling good, my Nintendos.” After some back-and-forth about censoring Cee Lo’s hit, Paltrow gets on the phone with the FCC, which declares the former Goodie Mob MC can say “forget you” on television — which segues right into the star’s first song. Backed by band of foxy musicians in clingy magenta minidresses and go-go boots, Cee Lo rocked the retro jam in front of a huge set piece swirled with Technicolor hues. Silhouettes of back-up dancers also grooved behind the star as he belted “I love you!” with abandon, looking slick in a black sequined shirt and gold chain. While Paltrow gave Cee Lo a standard “SNL” introduction for his second song, the singer souped up the look of the stage with scenes of a glittery skyline and flashy New York City streets splashed onto the set piece. With his groovy-looking band in tow, the crooner ripped through “Bright Lights, Bigger City,” swapping out the gold chain for a silver one and finishing up the performance with a raspy, rock-star-esque “Ow!” Paltrow popped up in other sketches as a comely cop who prompts an awkward reaction from Jay Pharoah as Will Smith on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” a leggy Heidi Klum auditioning to be a replacement host for CNN’s “Parker Spitzer” and a Spanish-speaking SportsCenter anchor who peppers her rapid-fire commentary with spot-on English pronunciations. In addition to Paltrow, another musical screen star made a special “SNL appearance: kooky personality Pee Wee Herman, played by Paul Reubens . In the skit, Andy Samberg runs into Reubens’ bow-tie-rocking alter ego at a bar, and they both end up knocking back tons of shots and getting into all types of booze-powered debauchery. Pee Wee even busted out his signature jerky, pelvic thrust before trying not to vomit all over the patrons. The rowdiness doesn’t stop there, as Samberg and Herman drunkenly wander in to the street and Pee Wee ends up smashing a chair on both a cop and CNN’s Anderson Cooper. The duo stumble home to an intervention staged by the pair’s friends, including Pee Wee’s puppet pals Chairry, Pterri and Conky. After Samberg and Herman agree to get their act together, everyone, including a bandaged Cooper, celebrates their new commitment to behaving properly with — what else? — a round of shots. Justin Bieber Shoots His Return To ‘CSI’

Singer tweeted a photo of himself in makeup for February 17 episode. By Gil Kaufman Justin Bieber appears on “CSI” Photo: CBS If you were concerned that Justin Bieber snapped and got into a scrap with an overly aggressive photographer, relax, it’s just makeup. Images of Bieber with a pretty impressive shiner started zooming around the Internet on Tuesday, but the picture is just a still from the set of “CSI,” which the singer will revisit next month. Bieber, who first appeared on the show in September, tweeted the photo of his makeup-caked black eye on Tuesday along with the message “On set … where? Let’s just say I’m back to my evil ways. #badass.” According to Entertainment Weekly, after getting good notices his first time around, Bieber is set to reprise his role as troubled teen Jason McCann in an upcoming February 17 episode of the crime procedural titled “Targets of Obsession.” The show will air during February sweeps (go figure), six days after Justin’s movie debut in his 3-D biopic/concert film, “Never Say Never,” which opens in theaters on February 11. In his first “CSI” appearance, which was Bieber’s acting debut, he portrayed a young kid whose older brother had been killed at the end of the previous season. Cops suspected that Bieber’s character took out his anger over his brother’s death on authority by planting bombs. In his second go ’round, currently being filmed, show regular Nick (George Eads) tips Jason off that he might be in “imminent danger.” Last year, “CSI” executive producer Carol Mendelsohn told MTV News that the teen star would be returning to the show, explaining how the September episode left unanswered questions about his character. “At the end of the episode, we’re left with the question: Is Jason a good kid stuck in a bad situation or is Jason a bad kid hiding behind his cuteness?” Mendelsohn said. “You can see why Justin was such a perfect choice to play this role. … It’s an explosive story.” While fans will surely cheer his return to TV, they recently learned that Bieber will not be the subject of an episode of “Glee,” as was widely rumored. After stories began to swirl that Bieber Fever was slated to sweep McKinley High, Ryan Murphy, the co-creator of the Fox hit, cleared things up, explaining the role that the teen star’s music would play in an upcoming episode. Murphy maintained that unlike other superstars whose repertories have received “Glee” overhauls — like Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Madonna — Bieber’s current list of hits isn’t long enough to sustain an entire hour of New Directions-helmed numbers. “Those [tributes] are reserved for artists with big catalogs,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “Bieber comes up in episode 13 as a small plot point. Sam [Chord Overstreet] sings a JB song to win Quinn’s [Dianna Agron] approval.” Related Artists Justin Bieber

Melissa Etheridge: Dating Linda Wallem, Ex-Wife’s BFF, Tabloid Reports

The split between Melissa Etheridge and Tammy Lynn Michaels just got a lot messier. While the two continue to argue over financial issues , the singer’s personal life has now come into focus – and it’s a hurtful image for Michaels. The National Enquirer reports that Etheridge is dating Linda Wallem, a producer on Nurse Jackie and someone who was in Tammy Lynn’s wedding party when she married Melissa. “Linda has been talking constantly on the set about how she and Melissa are in love and how they’re in a committed relationship,” a source tells the tabloid. Etheridge and Michaels got married in 2003 and Wallem was right there with them, this friend says, adding: “In lesbian terms, Linda was the ‘best lady.’ Now she’s taken Tammy’s place.”

Britney Spears Taking Risks For ‘Hold It Against Me’ Video

‘She is taking risks when it comes to fashion, when it comes to choreography, when it comes to this music,’ choreographer Brian Friedman says. By James Dinh Britney Spears Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage In Britney Spears’ “For the Record” documentary, the pop icon stressed the importance of dance in her life, even saying that she’d be “dead” without it. And on the heels of a new era in music, the singer is ready to take her signature dance skills to a whole new level in the music video for her latest single, “Hold It Against Me,” according to choreographer Brian Friedman. Speaking with MTV’s “The Seven,” Friedman dished details on rehearsal time, his take on the new tune and his longtime partnership with the entertainer. “This is a dance video. Rehearsals can get pretty rough,” the choreographer said. “We’re playing it safe, we’re not trying to kill ourselves yet, but as the video comes closer and closer, we’ll definitely be hurting our backs. There was a moment while we were rehearsing where I showed Britney a section and it was something I really wanted her to do, and she freaked out. … It’s crazy when you first see something like that, how overwhelming it can be, especially when you haven’t been in the [dance] studio for a year.” Despite Ms. Spears’ early hesitation, the dance mastermind said it was probably the wrong section of the routine to show her first, revealing that the pop superstar has learned the moves and is “killing it now.” Reports of a new Britney music video leaked in December when the fansite BreatheHeavy.com posted a notice for auditions. “It’s been the biggest buzz, you know?” he continued. “There’s been a lot of speculation as to when the actual project started and it’s been blowing up on my Twitter. People have been asking, ‘Are you in rehearsals? Are you in auditions?’ and that’s the mystery that should be unknown. What we do know is we’re in rehearsal studios right now and the video’s coming.” How exactly does “Hold It Against Me” fare in comparison to the slew of other dance tunes under Britney’s belt? Calling the iTunes chart topper “the hardest dance track that she’s ever put out,” Friedman said, “It’s infectious. The beat gets inside of you, and just when you think you know it, it takes a turn. The song, in particular, is one of my favorite songs I’ve heard off the bat. I’m really excited about choreographing it.” Spears and Friedman have a long-standing professional relationship, including working together on the pop singer’s 2002 dance heavy “Overprotected (Remix)” music video. Later on in his chat with “The Seven,” the Illinois native recalled his first encounter with the then-teenager through a mutual friend who was dancing for her at the time. After meeting with the singer, Brian teamed up with her for her Grammy performance. “From then on, we became friends and she is fun to work with,” he gushed. “She’s a Southern girl — she’s all about having fun and laughing and cracking jokes. I think you can expect the unexpected from Britney. She is taking risks when it comes to fashion, when it comes to choreography, when it comes to this music — she’s grown up so much, and she’s pushing 30 years old soon, so she’s a strong independent woman and I think she wants to show that.” Are you looking forward to seeing Britney’s “Hold It Against Me” video?
