Kelly’s attorney spoke to TMZ , telling the site the singer fears retaliation from fellow inmates who know he’s accused of having sex with underage girls. There are apparently no R.Kelly fans in jail. The musician has opted for solitary confinement, feeling safer by himself despite having limited phone privileges and no access to TV or the internet. But, according to his attorney, Kelly needs support since he can’t read or write, making tasks like figuring out what’s on the commissary list virtually impossible. Earlier this week, Kelly pled not guilty to all charges. Though his attorney argued that he was not a flight risk and had appeared at all of his court appointments on time, a judge denied bond calling the case “extraordinarily serious.” If convicted, Kelly would face the maximum of 195 years in prison. Prosecutors believe that there were many more girls, beyond the initially cited 12, who were victim to Kelly’s abuse. This decades-long history of abuse was documented through witness and survivor testimony in the dream hampton produced documentary “Surviving R. Kelly” which aired on Lifetime this past January. Source: Scott Olson / Getty R. Kelly might finally face a level of justice unlike he’s ever seen in times prior in relation to his many ongoing legal ordeals. After the Feds took down the beleaguered R&B singer, details of the arrest have been coming forth, including some of Kelly’s former staffers handing over nearly two dozen tapes of him having sex with underage girls. TMZ reports : Gerald Griggs — who represents Joycelyn Savage’s family among others — tells TMZ the federal investigation run by the Northern District of Illinois uncovered over 20 videos of Kelly engaged with minors. Both Griggs and our federal law enforcement sources tell us the tapes show multiple victims … and prosecutors confirmed with multiple witnesses the girls were underage. Griggs says several of Kelly’s enablers — past and present — flipped and turned over the tapes to investigators. He says those videos were exactly what the feds needed to secure indictments for sex crimes, including child pornography. We broke the story last month … an ex-employee testified the singer regularly recorded his sexual encounters with underage girls, and believed the feds got their hands on some of that video. Previously singers Jesse Reyes, Bebe Rexha and more accused Detail (who produced ‘Drunk In Love’, ‘We Dem Boyz’ etc.) of sexual misconduct, rape, and sexual abuse. Neisha Neshae shared a lengthy excerpt on Instagram, detailing how the slick producer allegedly tried to groom her during a studio session. Neisha says he came into the booth where she was working and started touching all over her body, insisting she continued to sing. A previous victim of sexual abuse, Neisha says she froze, eventually leaving without her music and never to be contacted by the producer with her songs again. I wasn’t going to ever do this … buttt I gotta get it off my chest , y’all remember when I went to work with detail in LA. (Mind you my team of 4 men were there with me) I was there for 12 hours, I recorded 9 records he wrote. I have not seen or heard not one of those songs. Halle Bailey is about to be part of our big screen world. The 19-year old — who forms one half of the R&B duo Chloe X Halle, along with her sister — has been cast as Ariel in the upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. Said director Rob Marshall of the decision to cast Bailey in the title role of the film, which is based entirely on the iconic 1989 Disney cartoon: “After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence and substance – plus a glorious singing voice – all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role.” Melissa McCarthy, Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina are also also talks to star and lend their voices to the movie, which will begin production in 2020. The Little Mermaid will be the latest Disney cartoon to be remade in this live-action fashion, following this spring’s Aladdin and this summer’s The Lion King. So… that’s it, right? End of story and end of this latest piece of interesting movie news? NOPE! Because social media can be a terrible place, full of judgment A-Holes and racists in general, many people out there are aghast over Bailey’s casting. Because they thought it was Halle Berry who was cast as Ariel? Actuallly, yes. This was an initial misunderstanding. But the bigger uproar has centered around the fact that Bailey is African-American and the character of Ariel was not. Of course, she as also a mermaid and Bailey is a human… but no one has really objected to this difference between the singer and the curious mermaid. This person, for example, tried to use science to argue that Ariel simply had to be white: There was also the use of the fake term “blackwashing,” along with some attempts to reason that Ariel is Dutch and, therefore, well, you see… We’ll spare you the disgusting details of other, similar Tweets. But know this: There’s a Change.org petition, which we are NOT about to link to, that calls for Bailey to be fired there must be “justice for Ariel” and the petition signees aren’t about to let “Disney ruin our childhood.” We don’t even know what to say about people who actually get worked up over what ethnicity they think a cartoon ought to be when he or she is brought to life by an actual person. Go outside? Take a nice, long walk? Try to re-evaluate every aspect of your life? Because, seriously, you are 1. Mostly just being racist; and 2. Lil Nas X was coming out! Yay! But coming out as what, exactly? Almost instantly, major publications like USA Today and Los Angeles Times published headlines along the lines of “Lil Nas X Comes Out As Gay,” despite the 20-year-old never confirming his sexuality. Although publications like CNN claim sources close to Lil Nas confirm he’s gay, the young star still hasn’t had a moment to publicly define is sexuality for himself. For some folks, this might be a petty observation, but for people who’ve spent much of their life trying to understand their sexuality, it can be an ongoing journey trying to figure out your identity. Lil Nas could easily be bisexual, pansexual, queer or he might not want to label his sexuality just yet. The subject becomes even more complicated due to his trolling humor. Is he here for all the genders? Is he trolling us? WE NEED ANSWERS! Lil Nas X’s “coming out” saga reminds me of another important coming out moment — Frank Ocean ‘s. In 2012, he released a letter describing romantic relationships he’s had with women and men. Automatically, publications like The Washington Post wrote headlines like “Frank Ocean Comes Out As Bisexual.” But again, Frank never mentioned in his letter that he identified as bisexual. He simply said “I was in love.” Some people might have the need to know for sure someone’s sexuality or the specifics of their “coming out,” and this isn’t necessarily an odd feeling depending on the context. It’s hard out here in the dating world and some folks just want to know if they have a chance with their celebrity crush. However, Lil Nas X is teaching us that there are levels to this. He might never mention his sexuality again. He might even leave us guessing for years about what his tweets really mean. Meanwhile, he could be living his best gay life…or straight life…or straight life with a side of gay. Lil Nas also has to figure out the ways he wants to be “out.” Will he be sharing pictures of his future partners on social media? Will he dish on navigating his sexuality in queer-antagonistic spaces? These are questions he must answer for himself, after the pride flags come down, after the last floats set sail in a parade. Although being out publicly is great and has social awareness benefits, anyone understanding their sexual identity must move on their own time. Until the full story comes out (and if it comes out), we’ll just have to be satisfied with Lil Nas’ trolling tweets.
