Swedish House Mafia’s ‘Save The World’ To Debut At Miami Music Week

‘It’s not the ‘One’ rip-off, it’s not the ‘Miami 2 Ibiza’ rip-off, it’s just something new,’ Axwell says. By Adam Stewart Swedish House Mafia DJs Sebastian Ingrosso, Axwell and Steve Angello Photo: 2010 Denise Truscello Fasten your seat belts. The Swedes are coming back to Miami , and if the past is any indicator of the future, we all know what that means. Coming off a monthlong studio session in Los Angeles, you can bet your bottom dollar that Swedish House Mafia’s latest single will be nothing short of epic. It’s no secret that the stakes are high. Having been dubbed owners of the unofficial Winter Music Conference anthems the past two years running with “Leave the World Behind” and “One,” respectively, Ax, Seb and Steve know that their massive following expects nothing short of another Miami monster. And according to Axwell, when the curtain falls at Saturday’s “Masquerade Motel: One Night Stand,” their new song “Save the World” will deliver just that. “It’s one of the songs that came out of the studio sessions we had over here in L.A. this year,” Axwell told MTV News of the new indie-rock-infused track, which he promises is nothing like anything they’ve produced in the past. “I think a good thing is always to leave what you did there and start fresh,” he said. “Like with ‘Save the World,’ for example. It’s not the ‘One’ rip-off, it’s not the ‘Miami 2 Ibiza’ rip-off, it’s just something new. It seems like it’s what people want to hear.” That’s not to say that the new single or their upcoming album won’t have that iconic big-room house vibe. “We’ll have some duplication of the other [classic tracks],” Axwell explained, “[but] there’s a lot of music coming out [that sounds] similar. It’s nice to sort of break away from that a little bit, and we went completely the opposite way — like to indie dance, rock-inspired stuff. So, we just want to keep it fresh and interesting all the time.” With uplifting rock synths and an impossible-to-not-chant-along-with hook, “Save the World” has all the elements of a 2011 Miami anthem in the making, and will undoubtedly be one of the week’s most buzzed-about tracks. Featuring the vocals of fellow Swede John Martin, “Save the World” flawlessly fits the mold as a crowd-pleaser that will undoubtedly appeal to the group’s loyal fans. “We found [John] during the winter. He has a fantastic voice, and the way things are looking now, he’s going to be on that track and maybe one more,” Axwell said. “There was a lot of speculation as to who it was, like even Chris Martin [of Coldplay]! While no collaborations with Chris or any other rockers have been disclosed or even hinted as of late, the Swedes have again proved their versatility in the exploding and ever-morphing genre of electronic dance music. Couldn’t make it to Miami? Chris Brown Talks ‘Naysayers’ Before ‘Good Morning America’

Embattled pop star visited MTV News offices days before F.A.M.E. ‘s release — and ‘GMA’ outburst. By Rebecca Thomas Chris Brown Photo: MTV News Chris Brown glided into the MTV newsroom dressed in a sweatshirt and jeans, his crown of kinky blond coils peeking out from underneath a navy-blue Billionaire Boys Club beanie. If not for the bodyguard, handlers and handful of pals trailing him, he might be indistinguishable from any other tatted 21-year-old fresh from sinking 3-pointers on the court. It was an unseasonably warm (74 degrees in March!) Friday in New York City, and with fewer than five days to go until his fourth album, F.A.M.E., dropped, Brown had gone into a full-court promotional press for the disc, tweeting regular updates to his #TeamBreezy faithful and spreading his pre-album jubilation. After spending the last year largely self-propelling mixtape singles “Deuces” and “No BS” to stunning chart success, he again had the full support of his label and was eager to talk about the disc. “A lot of the songs, people don’t realize the mixtape songs, they’re on [ F.A.M.E. ], but the mixtape songs were out almost a year before they actually went to radio. So it was a blessing for people to actually see those records a year later and kinda be like, ‘Oh, I love that record,’ ” he told MTV News. “So it was great.” In fact, he seemed game to chat with us about just about anything, even offering a “winning” perspective on the NSFW photo of him that shook the Net . And although the mood was celebratory, and Chris was at turns goofy and playful, his history has a way of looming over the proceedings. We never mentioned her by name, but ex-girlfriend Rihanna and the 2009 assault that sent Brown’s pop-star career spiraling remained a part of the interview subtext, if only because he seemed finally to have dulled the taint of that incident. “The ‘forgiving all my enemies’ is basically for the naysayers,” Brown told us, explaining the acronym of F.A.M.E. “The ones that maybe have looked past Chris Brown like, ‘Oh, whatever.’ And maybe this is the opportunity for them to maybe find a song off the album that inspires them … so I think this album in itself is not just about me, it’s about anybody who wants to be inspired by music or just be positive.” If Brown seemed to be singing a catchy new tune last Friday, by Tuesday morning, he was hitting all the wrong notes. During an appearance on “Good Morning America,” questions about the Rihanna assault reportedly drove Brown into an offstage, chair-tossing fit. And like that, experts and fans were weighing in on whether the Virginia crooner could still make a comeback . With the focus on what’s perceived to be Brown’s short fuse, the attention seems to be off his project, an eclectic collection that finds him further exploring electronic dance music territory, spitting with hip-hop titans and upstarts and even paying tribute to Michael Jackson with a song sampling his idol’s classic “Human Nature.” Chris had so many songs, he revealed to us, that he and the label agreed, “depending on the progress of all my singles,” that he would deliver another full-length disc in six months. “On my mixtapes, I was putting 18 and 19 songs, so just imagine how many songs I was saving for my album; I had at least 70 to 80 records. I was like, ‘How am I really gonna put this out?’ So then I was talking about a double disc … and then, you know, the label and everybody, they put their input in and they were like, ‘Nooo, that’s not gonna happen,’ ” he laughed. “I have so many records that I’m just waiting to put out. Just trying to look [to] the future and have it prepared.” The long-term fallout from the “GMA” episode remains unclear, but Brown is making one thing crystal: He wants the music front and center. Justin Bieber Biography

By now the story of how Justin Bieber came to be is the stuff of legend. In an age where fame is only a viral video away, Bieber’s meteoric ascension to pop super stardom is still an exception, not yet a rule. Born in Stratford, Ontario, to a single, teenage mother, Bieber grew up playing sports, while secretly teaching himself how to play the piano, drums, guitar, and trumpet. It wasn’t until he was 12, that Bieber was ready to show the world what he could do. After placing second in a local singing competition, his mother posted a video of his performance on YouTube for friends and family that weren’t able to attend. The video went viral, and Bieber’s mother continued uploading videos of Bieber covering a string of syrupy hits by the likes of Usher, Justin Timberlake and other future colleagues. justin bieber impresses usher When the former marketing executive of So So Def, Scooter Braun, accidentally stumbled upon Justin Bieber’s YouTube channel (he was actually trying to track down a different singer) he knew he had found a star. Braun literally hunted Bieber down — tracking down former teachers, school board members and even unearthing footage of Bieber busking in front of a theater. Though Bieber’s mother originally envisioned her son serving God through his music, she gave in to Braun’s aggressive advances. After continuing to build his profile on YouTube, Braun arranged a meeting between his keen protege and R’n’B impresario Usher. Bieber’s natural charisma and talent immediately impressed Usher — who had once been in Bieber’s shoes — who signed him to Raymond Braun Media Group. Just like that, the prepubescent tween from Stratford, Ontario, had a record deal with Island Records, and a new home in Atlanta, where his path toward super-stardom began. justin bieber releases my world By the time Justin Bieber released his debut EP My World in 2009, he already had the luxury of a mass following shrewdly constructed by his management team on YouTube. In short, there was no way this thing would fail. Couple Bieber’s arsenal of syrupy confection of R’n’B pop, with his newly polished urban teenybopper aesthetic (thanks in large to his Usher-appointed swagger coach Ryan Good) and tween girls everywhere had found their ultimate crush. The record debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard charts with four singles landing safely in the Top 100. It wasn’t long before Bieber-mania was as ubiquitous as text messaging, with the mop-topped one performing for everyone from Ellen DeGeneres to Mr. and Mrs. Obama. justin bieber releases my world 2.0 When Justin Bieber released “Baby,” the infectious lead single off his follow-up disc My World 2.0 , he had become one of the music industry’s foremost saviors — a camera-ready Messiah in purple sneakers and a straight-brimmed cap. The single propelled My World 2.0 to No. 1 on the Billboard charts, making Bieber the youngest male solo act to top the chart since Stevie Wonder did it in 1963. But by now, Justin Bieber had become more than just a best-selling pop star — the pint-sized pipsqueak from Stratford, Ontario had become a genuine cultural phenomenon. Gigs on Saturday Night Live , The View and The Late Show meant that in 2010, there was no escaping Justin Bieber. can justin bieber escape the backlash? Justin Bieber’s omnipresence in the media, and his lightning-quick rise to fame were sure to inspire backlash, especially in the quick-to-hate blogosphere. Bieber’s shrewd embracing of social media (the boy tweets!), and his easy-to-pick-on effeminacy (lesbians who look like Justin Bieber has become its own meme) made him an easy target for both critics and creeps. Internet trolls have perpetuated a string of maliciously preposterous rumors about the Biebster; no he does not have syphilis, no he has not joined a cult, and as far as we know he’s not dead. But despite his many critics, Bieber has been embraced by the cred-solidifying hip-hop community; he pals around with Drake, Ludacris appears on his album; and Kanye West’s admitted fandom led to a much-tweeted about remix of Bieber’s “Runaway Love” featuring none other than Wu-Tang’s street disciple Raekwon. love him or hate him, justin bieber isn’t going anywhere If Justin Bieber was the prince of 2010, he may just end up being the king of 2011. So for all the haters out there, a warning: Justin Bieber is here to stay. With his best-selling tour wrapping up in December, Bieber has spent the last year dominating the internet (he was the most searched celebrity in July), inspiring riots and hysterics everywhere he went (remember the riot in Long Island?) and performing in some of the most revered venues in the world. Bieber’s recent gig at Madison Square Garden was filmed for his upcoming 3-D biopic due next winter, and his new album will feature at least two songs produced by Dr. Dre. Yes, Dr. Dre — he of gun-toting NWA fame — is producing two songs for the grinning charmer with pearly whites from Stratford, Ontario. Is it the end of the world as we know it?

Taylor Swift Holds On To Billboard Top Spot

Slow week produces no new names in top 50. By Gil Kaufman Taylor Swift Photo: Steve Granitz/ WireImage After gorging themselves on new releases over the holidays, music consumers seemed like they were in the mood to nest and cuddle up with the usual suspects during the final chart week of 2010. According to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, Taylor Swift will once again hang on to the top spot on the Billboard 200 chart next week thanks to sales of 77,000 for Speak Now, which saw a 72 percent drop in business from the week before, even as the 21-year-old newly single singer zeroed in on 3 million in sales in just over two months in stores. With every album in the top 30 suffering from significant double-digit losses, the traditionally slow final week of the year was especially lethargic. Rounding out the top 10 are Eminem , Recovery (#2, 63,000, down 54 percent); Rihanna , Loud (#3, 62,000, down 44 percent); Nicki Minaj , Pink Friday (#4, 61,000, down 54 percent); Kanye West , My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (#5, 58,000, down 54 percent); the “Tron: Legacy” soundtrack by Daft Punk (#6, 54,000, down 22 percent); Bruno Mars , Doo-Wops & Hooligans (#7, 45,000, down 46 percent); Mumford & Sons , Sigh No More (#8, 39,000, down 29 percent); Katy Perry ‘s nearly platinum Teenage Dream (#9, 38,000, down 62 percent) and Keyshia Cole , Calling All Hearts (#10, 37,000, down 71 percent). It was no party for Jamie Foxx ‘s Best Night of My Life, which shed 75 percent of its business in week two to land at #11 on sales of 36,000. Keri Hilson also saw a significant dip in week two of her No Boys Allowed, which slips four spots and 68 percent to #15 after moving 33,000 copies. As the trial for his former doctor revs up, sales of the first posthumous studio album from late pop icon Michael Jackson , Michael, are slowing down. The disc slips 13 spots in its third week, as sales dropped off by 82 percent to 27,000. And on the cusp of a new season of a revamped “American Idol,” the chart battle between last season’s winner and runner-up has turned into a dud. Slipping another 15 spots to #62 in its third week, Farmer’s Daughter, the debut from the dreadlocked #2 finisher, soul mama Crystal Bowersox , sold 11,000 copies for a to-date total just north of 106,000. Meanwhile, winner Lee DeWyze ‘s major-label debut, Live It Up, dipped 68 percent as it slips another 45 slots to #170 while moving more than 4,000 copies for a seven-week total just over 102,000. Those figures make the pair of albums the weakest debuts by #1 and #2 “Idol” finishers in recent history. Over on the iTunes tally, the “Tron” soundtrack is tops on the albums chart, followed by Eminem, Swift, West, Mumford & Sons, Mars, Rihanna, Ke$ha ‘s Cannibal, the self-titled debut from Big Time Rush and Minaj. Sales figures aren’t provided, but the singles chart is topped by Mars’ “Grenade,” which edges out Perry’s “Firework.” The rest of the list includes Ke$ha, “We R Who We R,” Enrique Iglesias , “Tonight,” Pink , “Raise Your Glass,” Black Eyed Peas , “The Time (Dirty Bit),” Rihanna/Drake, “What’s My Name,” Wiz Khalifa , “Black and Yellow,” Trey Songz , “Bottoms Up” and Nelly , “Just a Dream.” With no new major releases this week, the charts are likely to look similar next week, at least until the Decemberists hit stores on the 18th with The King Is Dead.

Britney Spears Vs. Lady Gaga: Which Diva Will Rule 2011?

Gaga’s Born This Way and Spears’ new album both coming early in year. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga and Britney Spears Photo: Getty Images In 2010, Lady Gaga battled Taylor Swift for female pop domination, but in 2011, Gaga is going up against none other than career pop star Britney Spears. It should be a truly epic battle of the blondes, and it’s made even more interesting because the two not only share sonic similarities, but also have very similar fanbases of loyal devotees waiting to hear new notes from the chart-topping lasses. In 2008, both Gaga and Spears released new music (Gaga with The Fame and Britney with Circus ), and the ladies each released compilation albums in 2009 (Gaga’s The Fame Monster and Britney’s second greatest-hits collection, The Singles Collection ), but never have their releases really come face to face as they will this year. Gaga is set to release her single in February, with her full album, Born This Way , to follow sometime after. Meanwhile, Britney will have her first single out very early in 2011, with the album set for release in March . So, which bombshell will rise to the top of the heap? MTV News asked music critics to weigh in. “I think the thing about Gaga is: Her persona is really experimental, but her music isn’t, and I think she’s gonna have to really come out with some different stuff to make it more interesting,” writer Julianne Escobedo-Shepherd proposed. “I think her fanbase is so solid that she’ll be fine no matter what she does.” New York Times writer Jon Caramanica noted that no one can guess what Gaga has up her sleeve for her next album, but it will be interesting. “I see Gaga changing every six months,” he said. “I think she’s trying new ideas. Maybe they’re not all hits or they’re not all successful, but I think she’s trying new things, so if you look at how Gaga’s going to evolve, I don’t think we can say where Gaga’s gonna land,” he explained, “but I think we can say reliably it’s going to be really interesting.” How does a vet like Britney compete with a newbie? Escobedo-Shepherd explained that Spears is actually in a great place to do it. “She’s got a blank slate right now,” she said. “People don’t know what to expect from her. I think the fact that maybe she’s being more experimental shows that she feels freer a little bit, and I think it’s going to show in the music,” she predicted. “In the music sphere, I think that Britney’s gonna win, but Gaga’s so on top you can’t top her, even if you’re Britney.” RapRadar.com’s Elliot Wilson noted that right now, “It’s Gaga’s game to lose,” and Complex ‘s Noah Callahan said Spears’ vet status could work in her favor. “The thing with Britney Spears that makes it work for her is that she’s been around for so long that people are invested in her narrative, and even when the records are so-so, they still have the desire to see her succeed as an individual,” he said. “I don’t really know what to expect from Lady Gaga in 2011. I do know that she will definitely throw us a curveball and do something that is unexpected.” Do you expect Gaga or Britney to rule 2011? Give us your prediction in the comments below! Usher, Ke$ha And More Help Dance Music Go Pop In 2010

But is it here to stay? Our music-industry experts weigh in. By Akshay Bhansali David Guetta Photo: Raymond Boyd/Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images In 2010, pop princesses, R&B icons and chart-dominating newcomers all danced to the same beat. Not only did dance music go pop, but pop music caught the club-music bug. Between Katy Perry’s “Firework,” Ke$ha’s “We R Who We R,” Rihanna’s “Only Girl (In the World),” Enrique Iglesias’ “I Like It,” Usher’s “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love” and “OMG” and countless other singles, established artists definitely looked to dance beats for surefire hits. And two of this year’s biggest success stories in music were Jason Der
