Train Enjoy ‘Intense’ MTV World Stage Performance

Band’s set, filmed in London, premieres Friday on Palladia at 9 p.m. ET. By James Montgomery Train’s Pat Monahan Photo: MTV News Thanks to the success of hits like “Meet Virginia,” “Drops of Jupiter” and — especially — “Hey Soul Sister,” Train are the kind of band that operate in only one way: globally. They are, after all, one of the most popular radio acts on the planet ( “Soul Sister” went to #1 in 16 different countries, was the most-downloaded song of 2010 in the U.S., and the year’s most-played song in, of all places, Australia), which is why they’re the perfect band to be showcased on MTV’s World Stage, a concert series that features the biggest acts on Earth. On Friday at 9 p.m. ET on Palladia, fans who weren’t lucky enough to score tickets to London’s Shepherds Bush Empire theater — where Train filmed their World Stage performance back in October — will finally be able to catch the band in all their globe-spanning glory. Though the idea of filming a show for the entire world seems like a no-brainer, the guys in Train were hesitant to sign on when first approached by MTV. After all, they’d done the whole “concert film” thing before and, as frontman Pat Monahan put it, the end result was usually less than satisfactory. For everyone involved. “We’ve recorded a lot of shows in the past, with cameras … and usually it’s been kind of a bummer, because it sets a weird vibe right off the bat, when there’s six cameras and people can’t see past [them],” he explained. “But this one was different. They set it up really nicely and all the fans that were in there were psyched to be a part of it, and we were psyched to be a part of it. … The people of London were amazing, and once they found out they were going to be part of a film, it was even more intense. It was a great night for us.” The show also gave Train an opportunity to unveil their brand-new, Coca-Cola-approved Christmas song, “Shake Up Christmas.” The London audience was the first anywhere to hear the tune, and even though it was new — and being played in October — the response was one Train won’t forget any time soon. And, luckily, the cameras were there to capture the moment. “[That was] the first time anyone heard it, at Shepherd’s Bush in London, and it was cool, because the end chorus is just ‘Ho Ho Ho,’ and so I just asked them to sing it once, and they sang it every single time,” Monahan smiled. “And that’s why it felt so big, because they just wanted to be a part of it. We feel honored to be able to go to the U.K. or Europe or anywhere in the world, and get people to care at all. That was the first time they heard it, and they acted like it had been on the radio for months.” “MTV World Stage: Train” premieres Friday, December 17, at 9 p.m. ET on Palladia. Train Say Grammy Snub ‘Felt Like A Practical Joke’

Band performed at nominations concert before massive hit ‘Hey, Soul Sister’ was largely shut out by Grammys. By James Montgomery Train Photo: MTV News Even if you are the most casual of music fans, there’s still a pretty good chance you know (and probably even own) Train’s “Hey, Soul Sister,” the most omnipresent (and best-selling) song of 2010. No matter where you turned, it truly seemed like the song was there … except, strangely enough, the Grammys. Earlier this month, when nominations for the 2011 Grammy Awards were announced, “Hey, Soul Sister” was oddly absent. It failed to score a nod for either Record or Song of the Year — both of which seemed mortal locks, given the single’s general inescapability — and ended up with just one nomination: for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals. And that was for a live version of the song. The fact that Grammy voters snubbed “Soul Sister” was even more shocking considering that Train were invited to perform at the annual Grammy Nominations Concert , a move that usually guarantees a plumb nod or two. And if you were surprised that Train left the telecast (largely) empty-handed, well, you weren’t the only one. “You know, it was a strange night for us, to be real honest with you,” Train frontman Pat Monahan told MTV News. “Playing the nominations show, being seated in the front to watch all the performances, and then to not be nominated for any of them during that show. I don’t really know what the take is, to be real honest. It kind of felt like a practical joke at the time. “I mean, a guy even came around, he was like, ‘You guys are going to be really happy tonight,’ ” drummer Scott Underwood added. “And we were like, ‘Oh, really? OK, cool!’ ” Monahan admitted that part of the reason “Soul Sister” was shut out of the Grammy’s big categories was because of a technicality: The song was released digitally in August 2009 — within the eligibility window for the 2010 awards — but added that the “live” version that picked up a nom probably should’ve sufficed for consideration, given the song’s success this year. “I’ll just speak for myself. During the ceremony, my feelings were hurt,” Monahan admitted. “I felt like we were being set up for something kinda big and it didn’t go down,” he said. “And I was like, ‘Wow, that was weird,’ because if I hadn’t been here, I’d just be psyched that we’re nominated, instead of disappointed that we weren’t nominated for the big several [awards]. But, you know, it’s cool to be nominated at the same time, so I’m pretty appreciative. It was just that one moment was a little bit hurt feelings.” And to that end, Monahan said he’s already put the Grammy incident behind him. In fact, he’s even learned a lesson from the whole thing. “It’s a great reminder that that’s not what we’re here for. Really what we’re here for — and we keep proving it over and over again — is, we’re here because there’s some Train fans out there, and somehow they keep growing instead of shrinking,” he said. “And there’s some music that we’re supposed to provide people to maybe make their lives a little bit better and, you know, that’s really why we’re here. All the rest is just whatever, as the song ‘If It’s Love’ says.” What do you think of Train’s Grammy experience? Were they wrongly overlooked? Sound off in the comments! Related Artists Train

Lil Wayne Premieres New Song, ‘6’7" ‘

Weezy re-teams with ‘A Milli’ producer Bangladesh for first single off Tha Carter IV. By Alvin Blanco Lil Wayne Photo: Getty Images Lil Wayne is officially back. The Young Money CEO was released from Rikers Island in November, but on Tuesday (December 14) Lil Wayne let Funkmaster Flex premiere his latest single, “6′ 7″,” featuring Cory Gunz and produced by Bangladesh. The combo of Weezy and Bangladesh creates instant heat, just as it did when they linked up on “A Milli” from Tha Carter III. That single became one of 2007’s most popular and helped push the album to a million units sold in its first week. Lil Wayne snaps on “6′ 7,” ” dropping some very quotable verses (“Most of y’all don’t get the picture unless the flash is on”) over Bangladesh’s schizoid production of sped-up vocals, blade-sharp percussion and murky bass. Vivid metaphors flow throughout the track. Raps Wayne, “Life is a bitch and death is her sister, sleep is the cousin, what a f—in’ family picture/ You know father time, we all know mother nature. It’s all in the family, but I am of no relation. …” The latest Young Money signee, Cory Gunz, caps off the song with a double time flow on the final third verse. Blog sites began posting a radio rip of the song almost immediately. On Shade 45 earlier Tuesday morning, Lil Wayne told hosts DJ Drama and Karen Civil that “6′ 7″ ” is not only “a very tall record” but is the lead single from Tha Carter IV, which he said will be in stores February 2011. Elin Nordegren and Kids to Leave Country, Tiger Woods Feeling Blue For the Holidays

Looks like Tiger Woods has more to be sad about than reports of Elin Nordegren’s new boyfriend , a rumored South African hunk who “could be the one.” Sources say she was kissing this fella in a school parking lot. The validity of that rumor is disputed, as his name hasn’t even been unearthed yet. But Nordegren kissing Tiger goodbye for the holidays? Factual. SPLITTING TIME : That’s life for Tiger going forward . Elin Nordegren is taking the couple’s two kids, Sam and Charlie, off to Sweden over the Christmas holidays, leaving the golf great all alone in Florida. The blonde beauty and the kids will first visit London to visit her sister Josefin, then head to Sweden to spend time with her family. Tiger? Not invited. “Elin negotiated a deal with Tiger to let him have the kids over Thanksgiving, if she could have them for Christmas,” a source close to the pair said. “They argued over it, but in the end, Elin got her way.” The still-struggling golfer didn’t realize that he’d played right into Elin’s hands and that she’d be leaving the country altogether, said the source. Guess that’s the reality of divorcing their mom and splitting custody. Whether he has any regrets at all, it’s a new reality Woods has to live with. No more Tweeting about pie until next year, unfortunately.

Long Beach (California) Man Killed by Police Was Holding a Water Nozzle, Not a Gun

L.A. NOW Southern California — this just in – Los Angeles Times Man killed by Long Beach police was holding water nozzle, not gun December 13, 2010 | 3:07 pm The 35-year-old Long Beach man killed in an officer-involved shooting Sunday was holding a water spigot, not a gun, Long Beach Police officials said Monday. Two Long Beach police officers responded to a 911 call at 4:40 p.m. Sunday from a neighbor reporting an intoxicated man holding a “six shooter” that looked like an antique gun in the 5300 block of East Ocean Avenue. “The officers had a position of cover and were observing the suspect while other officers were en route,” said Sgt. Dina Zapalski, a spokeswoman for the Long Beach Police Department. Zapalski said Douglas Zerby was in a seated position when he extended his arms while holding the gun-like object and pointed it at an officer. The investigation revealed that Zerby was actually holding a black pistol-grip water nozzle with a metal tip, she said. He was shot in the torso with a shotgun and handgun, then handcuffed, Zapalski said. He died at the scene. Zerby's older sister, Eden Marie Biele, said she was “mortified” upon hearing of her brother's death. “Our brother was killed for no reason,” she said. “We're outraged. You can't get drunk in the city of Long Beach and not get shot? You're trying to do the responsible thing and not drive and you get shot? Is that standard protocol? They didn't wait for backup, they just shot him.” Zerby had been waiting on the stoop for his friend to come home. He often frequented the building after he had been drinking and was known among the neighbors, his sister said. It was a new neighbor who was not familiar with her brother who made the 911 call, she said. The family will be holding a vigil at the scene of the shooting at 5:30 p.m. Monday. ‘Jersey Shore’ Star Sammi Recalls A Denim Disaster On ‘When I Was 17’

Sammi Sweetheart’s sister was none too pleased when the reality star borrowed skintight jeans and didn’t bring them back in one piece. By Vaughn Trudeau Schoonmaker Sammi “Sweetheart” Giancola appears on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV News When she was 17 years old, “Jersey Shore” star Sammi “Sweetheart” Giancola chose the wrong night to sneakily borrow her sister’s favorite jeans. “Her pants looked better on me than my own pants,” Sammi insists on the latest episode of “When I Was 17,” also featuring “Shore” castmates Vinny and Ronnie. While getting dressed to go out for a party, Sammi snuck into her sister’s room and snatched a pair of “super skintight” jeans. Unfortunately, she picked the wrong night to wear them. “I’m at this party thinking I look hot,” Sammi recalled. “And, you know, cops come knock on the door.” Fearing the cops and not letting the skintight jeans hold her back, Sammi and the rest of the partygoers booked it through the back door. Having escaped the house, Sammi challenged herself to hop a fence, only the pants weren’t so willing to keep up with her. “I go to jump over the fence, and I hear [a ripping noise]. Literally, my sister’s pants split.” Sammi made her way home, where she had to break the news to her sister that she had not only stolen the pants, but had managed to destroy them. “She was screaming at me,” Sammi said. “We were screaming at each other. Not a good time.” Now, years later, her sister doesn’t seem any less peeved. “They were my absolute favorite pair of jeans,” she said. “I would probably still be wearing them now.” Catch a “Jersey Shore” edition of “When I Was 17” — featuring Vinny, Sammi and Ronnie — Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. Ali Fedotowsky and Roberto Martinez: The Wedding Plans

Ali Fedotowsky and Roberto Martinez are serious about getting married. So much so, the engaged Bachelorette couple almost did it quickie-style in Vegas! They decided against it, but only because they want a real wedding. After the twosome watched Jason and Molly Mesnick renew their vows, “I was like, ‘Maybe we should just go with them and get married,” Ali revealed. But “that probably would have upset a lot of people” so the pair, who plan to spend Christmas in Tampa with his family, are focusing on plans for a 2011 affair. Said Ali Fedotowsky , “I’ve been looking at wedding things and I’m always like, ‘That looks tacky. Barbie Rocks Lady Gaga’s Outrageous 2010 Outfits

Iconic doll models Mother Monster’s zaniest looks of the year in an Entertainment Weekly photo spread. By Mawuse Ziegbe Cher and Lady Gaga Barbies at the 2010 VMAs Photo: EW.com One unique hallmark of pop-culture superstardom is getting a doll fashioned in her super-fabulous image. But when we’re talking about Lady Gaga , one plastic figurine suited up in a signature costume just isn’t enough. That’s also what the folks at Entertainment Weekly thought, so they tricked out an assortment of Barbies in miniature versions of some of Gaga’s most memorable 2010 looks. In a tribute to one of the magazine’s Entertainers of the Year, stylists re-created six of Gaga’s most headline-grabbing ensembles for the foot-tall diva. Barbie is wrapped up in strips of raw meat for a doll-size take on Gaga’s meat dress from the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , her fleshy booties affixed to her feet with dental floss and a miniature Cher with big hair and a skimpy bodysuit handing her a Moonman in front of a VMA step-and-repeat. Barbie is also outfitted in her own version of the lacy beekeeper-chic look Gaga rocked to attend her sister’s high school graduation. Lending the image a sense of authenticity, the picture of Barbs in a cream-colored jumpsuit and voluminous black veil was actually snapped at the Germanottas’ alma mater on New York’s Upper East Side. Another of the songstress’ show-stopping NYC appearances is revisited, as Barbie dons a mini-dress made of brown human-hair extensions and ropes of sparkly jewels with a mic attached to her hand, paying homage to
