All the Films You Expected to Get Nominated by the Producers Guild Got Nominated

Well, almost all of them. For those keeping score at home, the only film not nominated by the Producers Guild that’s also on the list of Best Picture candidates over at the Movieline Oscar Index was Winter’s Bone ; the beloved indie failed to make the cut, replaced instead by Ben Affleck’s The Town . Otherwise, status quo: The Social Network , The King’s Speech , The Fighter , Black Swan , The Kids Are All Right , Inception , Toy Story 3 , 127 Hours and True Grit all received nominations from the PGA, meaning they’re one step closer to fulfilling their predicted Oscar glory. It’s Official: Gwyneth Paltrow Hosting SNL with Musical Guest Cee Lo Green

This explains all of the “Paltrow to duet with Cee Lo” reports from yesterday: NBC has confirmed to Movieline that Paltrow will host Saturday Night Live on Jan. 15 and, yes, the musical guest is Cee Lo Green. (This news was originally reported as a duet to occur this weekend, which made little sense considering that Jim Carrey is hosting.) And, yes, the smart money would concur that we will see a duet between these two on Cee Lo’s smash hit “F*ck You,” whose sanitized version Paltrow covered on Glee . [ NBC ]

On The Elephant In The Room: Population And The Environment

Is this our future, to be as crowded as the Planet Gideon? As Sami noted in his post Is Birth Control the Cheapest Answer to Climate Change? , overpopulation isn’t exactly a taboo subject here on TreeHugger. The subject has attracted the attention of many of our writers, and some scepticism. Here is a roundup of the various positions:… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Biggest Smart Grid Challenge Facing Utilities? Consumer Education.

Photo by mpeterke via Flickr Creative Commons There are myriad challenges utility companies face as we work to upgrade our electrical grid. However, there is one that stands out as easily fixable. The stories we’ve heard over the past year about consumers balking at smart meter installations could have been avoided. So too could a smart meter

Brian David Mitchell, Uber-Creepy Elizabeth Smart Kidnapper, Found Guilty in Federal Court

Brian David Mitchell was convicted of kidnapping Elizabeth Smart. Seven years after he abducted Smart now 23, from her Utah bedroom and subjected her to a terrifying nine-month ordeal, a jury rendered a guilty verdict on charges of kidnapping and transporting a child across state lines for sexual purposes. He faces a possible life sentence. That might not be long enough … AHHH! Scared yet? Luckily for all of us, Brian David Mitchell is off to prison . Jury deliberations began after a month of testimony , including several days on the witness stand for Smart, who calmly recounted how Mitchell raped her daily. Mitchell was singing “The Great Redeemer Died,” as he often does, and didn’t stop singing when the verdict was read aloud, showing no visible emotion either. Elizabeth Smart, 23, took her seat next to her parents, Ed and Lois, and her sister, Mary Katherine. After the verdict was read, a look of triumph was shared. Mitchell’s accomplice, Wanda Barzee, who pleaded guilty to kidnapping last year, is serving a 15-year sentence in a federal facility already. Good riddance.

Smart Meter Opt-Out Bill Introduced In California

Photo by PGEgreenenergy via Flickr Creative Commons Several utilities in California have been installing smart meters like crazy across the state, though none with as much attention as Pacific Gas & Electric. The utility has made great strides in installations, but has at the same time drummed up a lot of discomfort and outright disdain from consumers in some communities who feel that the smart meters pose a health risk as well as a privacy concern. This concern is why Assemblymember Jared Huffman introduced a bill that would requir… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Try to Guess Who’s Actually Alive in the Trailer for Dead Awake

It’s always disappointing when a trailer gives away the plot for the entire movie, but the trailer for Dead Awake shows that sometimes the alternative is just as bad. From what I could figure out: Nick Stahl’s girlfriend (Amy Smart) died ten years ago in a car accident. Only, Stahl is trying to convince a detective that it wasn’t an accident. But it turns out the detective he’s been talking to is also dead. Oh, and Stahl is dead too, but he doesn’t know it. Only Rose McGowan knows. Then Stahl’s girlfriend is alive again, or at least around. Or was that a flashback? Somebody help.
