According to KHOU: A school bus driver was charged Tuesday after she accidentally left a child alone on a bus while she went to Zumba class, according to authorities. Miriam Keren Contreras was charged with felony child endangerment. Administrators at Fonwood Early Childhood Center placed a call to the child’s parents to confirm the absence for the day, which is standard procedure. The child was supposed to be in school, however, arriving by Garcia Bus Co. Authorities immediately began searching for the child, who was found unharmed inside the parked bus at a facility where Contreras was attending a workout session. Contreras did not see the child on the bus when she dropped the other kids off at school and did not check the bus thoroughly before ending her route, according to investigators. Contreras’ bail was set at $2,000. HISD officials said Contreras was not an employee of the district. Garcia Bus Co. is a private company, contracted by the child’s parents. Man Subjected To Triple Enema During Traffic Stop Awarded $1.6 Million via Gawker David Eckert, who was given three enemas as part of a humiliating search after a routine traffic stop last year, has received a $1.6 million settlement from a county and city in New Mexico. Lawyers from the city of Deming and Hidalgo County agreed to the settlement earlier this week. “It was medically unethical and unconstitutional,” his lawyer, Shannon Kennedy, told the Associated Press. “He feels relieved that this part is over and believes this litigation might make sure this doesn’t happen to anyone else.” Eckert was pulled over for failing to yield at a stop sign last January. When Eckert appeared to be “clutching his buttocks,” police called in a K-9 to the scene, despite the fact that the dog’s license expired in 2011. The dog indicated there were drugs in the car and police obtained a warrant for an anal cavity search, despite finding no other evidence of drugs in the car. The following exams were then performed on Eckert at Gila Regional Medical Center, where Eckert was taken after a first hospital refused to examine him on the grounds that such a search was “unethical.” Justice was served!

According to Seattle Post-Intelligencer: A Seattle man accused of underpaying and hiding a live-in maid was sentenced Wednesday to probation. Having pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor, longtime Magnolia resident Romulo “Ome” Almeda Sr. will spend four years under court supervision for illegally employing the Filipina woman. Almeda, 73, shorted the woman $90,500 in pay over the four years she spent working as a live-in maid, landscaper and nanny for his family. He has already paid those back wages, and did not face jail time due to a plea agreement. Federal agents began investigating Almeda after the woman broke away with the help of a local pastor. According to court papers, the woman worked long hours for a few hundred dollars a month while living in near-complete seclusion. The woman was paid $400 a month, far less than the minimum wage she was due. She sent all but $50 to $100 a month home to support relatives in the Philippines. Partly because she no longer held a valid visa, the woman was kept from leaving the family homes she lived in. According to prosecutors, she wasn’t allowed to attend church due to fears she would be spotted and deported. She “did not do anything on her own; not shopping, the movies, having meals with friends,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Ye-Ting Woo said in court papers. “She did nothing but work for the family.” SMH. During two interviews, Gibson, who has no criminal record, denied the accusations and stated that she had never performed sexual acts on the victim, the report states. Gibson told investigators that the boy had kissed her, attempted to place her hand on his buttocks on one occasion, and that the attention made her feel good, according to police. The juvenile alleged that between June 2012 and December 2013, during five to 10 brief encounters, Gibson would enter his bedroom and wake him after 2 a.m. to kiss him and perform oral sex, police said. Pembroke Pines police arrested Gibson Sunday. Broward Judge John “Jay” Hurley ordered Monday that Gibson not have contact with the alleged battery victim. White uses green to keep the blacks blue … Marijuana Prohibition Has Racist Roots Via HuffingtonPost As the nation’s nearly 80-year history of pot prohibition slowly begins to crumble, starting with Colorado’s recent implementation of taxed and legalized recreational marijuana, critics of the increasingly popular policy shift are jumping to denounce the move. A number of white pundits and newspaper columnists have been among the most vocal, claiming that marijuana must remain illegal, despite their own prior use of it, because it supposedly makes people dumber. The columns themselves served as the most persuasive evidence of that point. And while such a correlation between pot use and intelligence has yet to be proven, one must be willing to ignore the racist roots of marijuana prohibition and the manner in which this unjust system of anti-drug enforcement still plays out today to make such a shallow argument in the first place. In a column for The Fix, Maia Szalavitz reminds us that Harry Anslinger, the father of the war on weed, fully embraced racism as a tool to demonize marijuana. As the first commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, a predecessor to the Drug Enforcement Administration, Anslinger institutionalized his belief that pot’s “effect on the degenerate races” made its prohibition a top priority. Here are just a few of his most famous (and most racist) quotes: “There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the U.S., and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz and swing result from marijuana use. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers and any others.” “Reefer makes darkies think they’re as good as white men.” Yes, you read that correctly. Meanwhile, states throughout the south began implementing drug laws as part of the explicitly racist Jim Crow system, with southern lawmakers being quite open about the racist motivations behind the laws. Sure, this was more than 75 years ago, but how much has actually changed today? The feds have stripped Anslinger’s offensive language from their official mission statements, but we are left with anti-drug policies that are hardly less racist in their application. According to a 2013 study by the American Civil Liberties Union, blacks across the nation were nearly four times more likely than whites to be arrested on charges of marijuana possession in 2010, despite data that suggested they use the drug at about the same rate. In some states, blacks were up to six times more likely to be arrested. This disparity isn’t new, and plays into broader arrest data: A study published in the journal Crime & Delinquency this month found that by the age of 23, nearly 50 percent of black males have been arrested, compared to 44 percent of Hispanic males and 38 percent of white males. In all, around 750,000 people are arrested for marijuana each year, with more than 650,000 of them for possession alone. (The U.S., of course, incarcerates a higher percentage of its population than any other nation in the world.)
