Andy Samberg Will Miss ‘So Many Things’ About ‘SNL’

‘I’ll definitely miss … being able to do comedy on such a storied show,’ Samberg tells MTV News about his ‘Saturday Night Live’ exit. By Josh Wigler Andy Samberg Photo: MTV News Andy Samberg’s announcement that he’ll no longer be a part of “Saturday Night Live” starting next season surprised precisely no one. The comedian’s possible exit had been rumored for months, with buzz recently reaching a boiling point thanks to the closing lyrics of “Lazy Sunday 2,” his final Digital Short: “On these New York streets I hone my fake rap penmanship/ That’s how it began, and that’s how I’mma finish it.” But even though Samberg is walking away after a seven-season run, don’t think the comedian arrived at the decision easily. MTV News spoke with Samberg and his co-star (and fellow “SNL” alum) Adam Sandler as they promoted “That’s My Boy,” and the Lonely Island artist revealed that there’s a lot he’ll miss about working on the show, his colleagues most of all. “The people and the friends, definitely,” Samberg told MTV News ahead of the Movie Awards on Sunday night. “I’ve been saying it a lot — I’m going to miss all of my friends and the people I work with. I love them all so much, and I’m hoping to stay in touch with them.” That said, Samberg feels very strongly about the choice to depart the New York-based late-night comedy series. “Over seven years, that show is like — and [Sandler] knows — it’s like going to war or being on a sports team,” he said. “It’s just everyone working towards this common goal at full speed. When you lift your head up from that and go out into the world, you kind of realize, you’ll always be nicely shell-shocked in a way that only the people who did it with you can understand. I’ll definitely miss having such an amazing outlet and being able to do comedy on such a storied show that everyone pays attention to, but … ” “But now you can do it on YouTube,” Sandler interrupted. “Right,” Samberg laughed. “Now it’s straight to YouTube.” Sandler, like Samberg, certainly knows what it’s like to walk away from “SNL.” After leaving the show in 1995, he found enormous success through movies like “Billy Madison,” “Happy Gilmore” and many more. With Sandler’s many achievements in mind, we asked the Happy Madison founder what he thought of Samberg’s decision to say so long to Saturday night. “He’s doing it all right,” said the comedian. “This guy cares about being a good person first, and I love that about him. He’s a hard-working fool when he wants to be, and he’s really a smart, talented and great guy. I know he’s going to do everything he wants to do. “I was aggressive back in the day. I was driven and needed to get my movies made and blah blah blah. He’s less nutty about it,” Sandler continued. “He’s a very passionate and smart guy who knows about what should come first, and that’s life. Right? Something like that?” “Yeah,” Samberg enthusiastically replied. “Right!” Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! Kristen Stewart And The ‘C’ Word: A Love Story

‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ star tells MTV News her favorite British slang is ‘a really good word.’ By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart Photo: MTV News We didn’t quite know what we were getting ourselves into when we asked Kristen Stewart to name her favorite British slang word. The actress spent a while perfecting her British accent in anticipation of “Snow White and the Huntsman,” and between that practice and her British boyfriend, Robert Pattinson, we were sure Stewart had learned a phrase or five that she was partial to. But we should have realized where she was headed when she told MTV News that she was being “way too honest here” during her Sneak Peek Week interview. That’s right: KStew’s favorite British word is “cu–.” She defended it, saying, “You go over there [to England], and it’s a very different effect. It’s fun. It’s good.” Sure, we would have gone with “arse” or “wicked” or “innit,” but we sort of get where Stewart was coming from in her preferential colloquialism. As her “Snow White” co-star Sam Claflin said, “[‘Cu–‘]’s become the new ‘mate.’ ” The conversation could have ended there, but Stewart added that her favorite way to use the “C” word is by adding an “-ing” to the end. “Add an ‘-ing’ to it — this is terrible — I heard some really down English crazy guy, on our crew actually, really angry, adding the ‘-ing,’ ” she explained. “It’s a really good word.” What about Claflin’s favorite American word? Apparently, that’s an easy question. “Aluminum. Garage. Trash,” he said with a laugh. “The list is endless.” Fortunately, you won’t hear the pair saying any of those words in “Snow White and the Huntsman,” which hit theaters Friday (June 1). But at least now we have a better idea of what Stewart and Pattinson are whispering in each other’s ears in all those paparazzi photos. ‘Rock Of Ages’ Exclusive Clip: Julianne Hough Is A ‘Jukebox Hero’

Hough and Diego Boneta tackle the Foreigner classic in this Movie Awards Sneak Peek Week clip. By Terri Schwartz Julianne Hough in “Rock of Ages” Photo: Warner Bros. There was only one way to end Movie Awards Sneak Peek Week , and that was to go out with a bang — a rock-and-roll bang with “Rock of Ages.” Stars Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, Malin Akerman and director Adam Shankman are on hand to answer a 30-minute Q&A following the movie, but not before they introduced a brand-new clip from “Rock of Ages” for our viewing pleasure. So feast your eyes on the beginning of Hough and Boneta’s rousing take on Foreigner’s “Jukebox Hero.” Clearly some sparks are flying between Hough’s Sherrie Christian and Boneta’s Drew Boley as they search for the right vinyl to buy in a record store. Sherrie’s eyes light up when Drew admits that he wants to be the next Stacee Jaxx, though we’re not sure how Stacee Jaxx feels about that goal. That admission prompts the duo to jump into a stirring, head-banging interpretation of “Jukebox Hero.” Though it’s only a brief tease — they don’t even get to the chorus! — we know from the track list for the soundtrack that this song is actually a medley with Russell Brand and Alec Baldwin’s take on “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Now that’s something we’re dying to see. We’re expecting lots of “Rock of Ages” references during the 2012 MTV Movie Awards , what with Brand hosting . The Brit is known for his tendency to go off the wall while hosting MTV awards shows, so we’re hoping he pulls the during the Movie Awards. Exclusive: Channing Tatum Takes It Off In ‘Magic Mike’ Clip

Steamy teaser debuted Thursday night during Movie Awards Sneak Peek Week. By Jocelyn Vena Channing Tatum in “Magic Mike” Photo: Warner Bros. Channing Tatum , along with co-stars Matt Bomer and Alex Pettyfer, get their groove on to “It’s Raining Men” in a brand-new, exclusive clip from “Magic Mike,” which we premiered Thursday night (May 31) as part of Movie Awards Sneak Peek Week. Tatum not only debuted the teaser, he also sat down with MTV News’ own Josh Horowitz and dished on playing the title character. The Steven Soderbergh-directed flick opens June 29 and goes inside the world of hard-bodied male strippers. In the clip, the guys are decked out in raincoats as they dance with umbrellas. The fellas shake, shimmy and, of course, strip — actually they tear off their clothes — to the iconic disco tune. But the highlight of the scene is probably when Tatum gets his dirty dancing on and humps the stage while the club’s female patrons swoon and scream. But that’s not it for Sneak Peek Week: On Friday night, Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta will join us for a chat about the big-screen adaptation of “Rock of Ages,” which also stars Tom Cruise, Mary J. Blige, Alec Baldwin, Catherine Zeta-Jones and more. Check back in at 11 p.m. ET Friday for our live Q&A with the actors. Vanilla Ice Vs. Will Forte: Watch ‘That’s My Boy’ Rap Battle!

‘That’s My Boy’ stars bust into spontaneous rhymes during MTV Sneak Peek Week interview. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting Josh Horowitz Vanilla Ice at MTV Sneak Peek Week on Wednesday Photo: Brian Dowling/Picture Group/MTV Will Forte and Vanilla Ice both displayed their smooth rap skills when they sat down with MTV News during MTV Sneak Peek Week . The “That’s My Boy” co-stars decided to use the interview as a place to spit some rhymes. Why? Well, it was a more creative way to answer the questions they were asked about their respective parts in the flick. In the film, Ice plays an exaggerated version of his real-life persona . When asked about his return to the big screen, he decided not to respond with a spoken answer but rather with a rhyme specially designed for the occasion. He spit, “Been a long time since you seen me on the TV/ V Ice here for sheezy/ Taking what’s mine ’cause it’s my time/ To hit you all with a new style of rhyme.” So, when it came time for Will Forte to talk about going nude for the flick, he took a page out of Vanilla Ice’s book and rapped his answer. “My name is Will Forte and I know how to move/ My name’s Will Forte and I know how to groove/ I know how to move, I know how to groove/ It looks like this homeboy is batting two for two,” he rhymed. The lively conversation took place just days before the 2012 MTV Movie Awards , which go down on Sunday. The show will be hosted by Russell Brand and feature performances by Fun. , the Black Keys, Martin Solveig and Wiz Khalifa . Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! Ciara Wants To Make You ‘Sweat’ On One Woman Army

‘This is almost like a journal,’ she tells MTV News of next album during Movie Awards Sneak Peek Week. By John Mitchell, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Ciara Photo: MTV News Before she took the stage Wednesday night during Movie Awards Sneak Peek Week with her ” That’s My Boy ” co-stars, R&B-pop princess Ciara hit the pre-show red carpet and revealed details of her much-anticipated new single and album. “I’m so excited about this new record. I’ll tell you guys because I love you guys so much, and what would it be without MTV?” Ciara told MTV News on the carpet. “My new album, I’m almost finished with it, and the album title is called One Woman Army. ” Army will be the “Goodies” singer’s first album at her new label home of Epic Records. Ciara parted ways with Jive Records in early 2011 following a falling-out over the promotion and support of her last effort, 2010’s Basic Instinct, which peaked at #44 on the Billboard albums chart after her first three LPs all enjoyed top-three debuts. She was not without a label for long, signing up to join L.A. Reid’s Epic just a few months later. It was Reid who signed Ciara to her first record deal in 2003. For her part, the pop star seems to be moving in a new direction with Army, calling the album “very, very personal” and saying she “darn near cried” while writing many of the songs. “This is the most vulnerable I’ve ever been in my life and career. And I’m so confident with being vulnerable. At one point in time, I was very afraid to be as vulnerable as I am,” Ciara said. “This is almost like a journal, my own personal journal when you get this record.” But fans of Ciara’s dance-heavy catalog shouldn’t fear: The singer assured us there will be plenty of uptempo tracks, including the lead single, “Sweat.” “It’s only right that I let you know this too, another bean, that my new single, my first single, is coming. It could be coming anytime soon, and it’s called ‘Sweat,’ ” Ciara continued. “I just love to make you sweat in all kinds of ways.” “That’s My Boy,” which hits theaters June 15, followed a never-before-seen clip from “Snow White and the Huntsman” as part of MTV’s Sneak Peek Week festivities, which will also include exclusive first looks at “Magic Mike” tonight (May 31) and “Rock of Ages” on Friday (June 1), as well as live nightly chats with the casts of each film. Tune in to MTV at 11 p.m. ET each night as the casts introduce the clips from their films, and join us at MTV.com after for a live Q&A with the actors. Ween May Be Gone, But Their ‘Good Run’ Lives On

With the band (apparently) calling it quits after 25 years, Bigger Than the Sound offers a eulogy. By James Montgomery Dean Ween Photo: Chris McKay/ WireImage In my review of Ween ‘s 2007 album La Cucaracha (which also happens to be the last time they were mentioned on this website), I referred to them as “musical cockroaches,” the kind of scurrying, scrounging band that — much like the titular (and totally gross) arthropod on the record’s cover — was capable of surviving nuclear holocausts and subsisting on a bar of soap for weeks at a time. “In essence, Ween are indestructible,” I wrote. “They will be here long after you and I are gone.” It turns out, I was wrong about that last point. Because on Tuesday, Aaron Freeman, better known to bong-rippers and Scotchgard-huffers everywhere as Gene Ween, told Rolling Stone that he was retiring the mantle and ending Ween, saying, simply, “It’s been a long time; 25 years. It was a good run.” Of course, this apparently came as a surprise to Freeman’s partner for the past quarter-century, Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo, who reportedly wrote on his private Facebook page that the band’s breakup “is news to me, all I can say for now I guess.” There’s been no official announcement on Ween’s site , and as late as 2010, the duo were talking about entering the studio to begin work on the follow-up to Cucaracha, though, from the sound of things, those sessions probably didn’t go all that well … if they ever happened at all. But if this really is the end of the band, well, most fans probably saw it coming. After an infamous onstage meltdown at a Ween show last year, Freeman entered rehab (and just released a solo album, Marvelous Clouds ), and in recent years, Melchiondo has devoted most of his time to his side-job as a fishing guide (he describes himself as both a “pretty good conversationalist” and “fully insured”). Still, none of that makes the news any less of a bummer, especially for folks like me, who grew up with Ween, got sh–faced at their live shows — a genuine rite of passage for any fan — spent endless smoky nights dissecting their wildly divergent back catalog and, as a result, would go on to process popular music through their own uniquely cracked spectrum. Freeman is right: It was a good run. And that’s why it’s taken me almost a day to write this column. After all, how does one encapsulate their 25-year career, which began in eighth-grade typing class and has encompassed tape-machine schlock, bizarre, brain-addled semi-hits — 1993’s “Push Th’ Little Daisys” — critical acclaim and Pizza Hut commercials (and master classes in old-school country & western, nautical prog, Beatles-y psych, Buffett-y calypso and, uh, Philly Soul, to name just a few of the dozens of genres they’ve skewered)? Because of all that, they most certainly rank up there as one of weirdest acts of all time, earning their rightful place alongside the likes of Zappa, Spike Jones, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and Captain Beefheart … though, to me, Ween were always something more: They were an entry point to all that oddity, the first of their kind. The moment I heard “Dr. Rock” or “The Stallion, Pt. 1” (from 1991’s The Pod ), I could practically feel my musical consciousness being expanded, and from that moment on, everything was different. In a lot of ways, Ween made me. I followed them through every twist and turn, often as puzzled as I was delighted ( 12 Golden Country Greats and The Mollusk remain two of my favorite albums ever). But through it all, Ween remained an important band for me, an old favorite, a reminder of the good times when I didn’t know better and when it was socially acceptable to wear basketball shorts and sit cross-legged in smoky dorm rooms all day long. And while nothing I write can effectively eulogize them, I do think that, in closing, it’s important to defend them in one regard: No matter what anyone tells you, Ween were never a “joke” band. They were a terrific band, one adept at doing anything — mostly because they wanted to — and brilliant enough to carry it out to the nth degree. The attention to detail on albums like White Pepper or Mollusk was the kind of thing only true musicians (and music aficionados) could muster — if Ween were gonna do a prog record, you’d better believe it was gonna sound like a prog record — and that held true to the very end. On what might very well end up being their final album track (the smooth-jazz-slaying “Your Party,” from La Cucaracha ), not only did they nail the buttocks-clenching uprightness of the genre, but they went out and got none other than David Sanborn to play satin-sheet sax on the thing. That goes beyond mere humor; it’s pure genius. And that’s what Ween were, to me, and to a whole lot of other people too: musical geniuses. They just managed to hide it for 25 years — though those of us who worship at the altar of the Boognish knew otherwise. Ween may not have lasted forever, but the memories they’ve soundtracked certainly will. It’s a Brown day, indeed. Related Artists Ween

Kid Cudi, Chemical Brothers, Figurine and College/ Electric Youth also up for Best Music at Sunday’s show. By Kevin P. Sullivan LMFAO Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images The right song can make a normal scene in a movie one that goes down as a classic, and pairing a scene with the perfect backing tune can shed new light on a song you thought you knew. So for the MTV Movie Awards , we honor the music that met the perfect movie and made the magic happen. Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to cast your vote and make sure your favorite takes the stage this Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET to collect the Golden Popcorn. Here’s our rundown of the Best Music nominees: College and Electric Youth’s “A Real Hero,” “Drive” If “Drive” had been just a straightforward crime thriller like a synopsis might suggest, it would have amounted to nothing more than an average genre entry with a pretty face attached. Instead, director Nicolas Winding Refn infused every inch of this new cult classic with ’80s nostalgia, including an electro-fueled soundtrack, led by the College/ Electric Youth collaboration “A Real Hero.” The pick could seem odd at first, but as soon as it kicks in and all other sound fades away, everything just clicks. Figurine’s “Impossible,” “Like Crazy” Young lovers inevitably come to adopt songs as meaningful and important to the memory of their relationship. Appropriately, last year’s “Like Crazy” featured a killer soundtrack, suitable for the impossibly cute first love. “Impossible” comes up during one of the more difficult moments in the film, when our ocean-crossed lovers are apart and old memories keep new ones from taking. It added a layer of reality and depth to a scene that felt straight out of real life. Kid Cudi’s “Pursuit of Happiness” (Steve Aoki dance remix), “Project X” When it comes to throwing the world’s greatest house party, a badass playlist lands at the top of the to-do list, right below “invite people.” Just a quick glimpse at the clip proves that there’s nothing quite like this Kid Cudi/ Steve Aoki jam to party till the sun comes up or the cops kick everyone out. LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem,” “21 Jump Street” Now if you’re more in the mood for party music to get stabbed in the back to, LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem” may be more up your alley. The song turned out to be the perfect accent to Schmidt and Jenko’s first big house party as fake high-schoolers, and it showed that you shouldn’t let something like a pesky knife wound ruin your rager. The Chemical Brothers’ “The Devil Is in the Details,” “Hanna” Similar to “Drive,” “Hanna” uses fairy-tale motifs and a frighteningly memorable score from the Chemical Brothers to elevate what would have otherwise been a rather typical Bourne rip-off. The music adds a whole other level of danger and makes the tale of a tween-age master assassin all the more sinister and disturbing. Kristen Stewart Recalls Her ‘First Time’ With ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’

During MTV’s Sneak Peek Week, the actress and ‘Snow White’ co-star Sam Claflin remember their erotic MTV ‘After Hours’ segment. By Fallon Prinzivalli, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart Photo: MTV News You may recall a little MTV “After Hours” segment called “Erotica,” in which Josh Horowitz had the cast of “Snow White and the Huntsman” read an excerpt from “Fifty Shades of Grey.” While Chris Hemsworth could barely make it through the reading, Kristen Stewart laughed at some of the lines, Charlize Theron attempted to act out the scene and Sam Claflin wooed us with his luscious tone. When we caught up with Stewart and Claflin again for MTV’s Sneak Peek Week , leading up to Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards at 9 p.m. ET, we asked the “Twilight” star if reading the erotic tale sparked her interest in the role of the timid Ana Steele. “They should ask me!” she joked. “No, I’m kidding. [During ‘After Hours’], that was the first time I read it.” Stewart is currently up for two Movie Awards along with her “Breaking Dawn” co-stars. Through the Movie of the Year and Best Kiss categories, she has a shot at the coveted Golden Popcorn. Voting is still open, so head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to make your voice heard! And who knows, maybe “Snow White” will grab some nominations next year. Until then, we’re pretty sure Sam Claflin has a future in erotica books on tape. “To be honest, having watched that back, I took it way too seriously,” the actor laughed as he recalled the “After Hours” video. “All four of us did very different readings, but I actually properly read it. I got really into it.” Stewart didn’t disagree. She gave it a good try, but Claflin is unbeatable. “What happened to Sam before he was an actor? I was trying to get a job,” he joked. “I will do anything for money.” Horowitz brought out all three books in the “Fifty Shades” trilogy wrapped in a ribbon for both actors as a going-away present. Now they have their own copies of E L James’ series to take with them as they travel. Though don’t expect to see KStew reading her copy as she jets off to and from LAX. “When people read this on airplanes,” she said, “I’m like, ‘Whoa. Take that blanket off your lap! Get off the plane. Sick!’ ” Claflin, however, has a different reaction. “I’m like, ‘Can I borrow that after you?’ ” Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now!
