Bafana Beat Guatemala 5-0 in friendly match

It was a night of records in Polokwane on Monday as Bafana Bafana skipper Aaron Mokoena celebrated winning his 100th international cap by leading his side to a record 5-0 win over Guatemala in a World Cup warm-up. The result will be a huge confidence boost for the team as goals from Katlego Mphela (two penalties), Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Surprise Moriri and Bernard Parker stunned the Central Americans. Bafana were awarded a terrible penalty decision by referee Ibrahim Chaibou from Niger, who adjudged Siphiwe Tshabalala’s long-range effort to have struck Guatemalan defender Gustavo Cabrera on the arm. Whether it did or not is up for debate, but what’s not is that the incident happened a yard outside the area, and at the very most should have been a free kick. Mphela did not waste the gift and notched his 13th goal in Bafana colours, snatching the ball out of the hands of Teko Modise and converting from the spot. Mphela and Gonzalo Romero traded ambitious long-range free kicks, before Letsholonyane scored his maiden international goal. Brilliant work from Lucas Thwala down the left saw him reach the byline and his chip into the box fell perfectly for Letsholonyane , who volleyed into an empty net with visiting goalkeeper David Guerra out of position. Tshabalala shot wide from just outside the area, while Mphela dallied on a shot and saw his effort deflected wide. If he had pulled the trigger quicker, he might have scored. Bafana did extend their lead three minutes into the second half when substitute Moriri picked up the loose ball just outside the six-yard box from Mphela’s driving run and cross and tapped home with the Guatemalan defence at sixes and sevens. The referee decided to level the score on a the poor penalty award count when he awarded the visitors a soft spot-kick after adjudging Thwala to have hand-balled, when the ball looked to have struck his chest. But Moeneeb Josephs saved Guillermo Ramirez’s poor effort and the score remained 3-0 to the home side. Steven Pienaar should have got a spot-kick minutes later when he was clattered in the area, but strangely this time the referee said no, but shortly afterwards he again pinned Cabrera for hand-ball in the box from Kagisho Dikgacoi’s shot. This award looked correct and Mphela coolly slotted home from the spot and Bafana matched their best-ever result in international football. Pienaar’s brilliant free-kick from 35-yards with 20 minutes left slammed against the post with Guatemalan substitute goalkeeper David Guerra beaten, denying him a spectacular goal. But that spectacular goal came from Parker , who picked up the ball on the sideline, beat two defenders and hot a shot from 25-yards across the goalkeeper and into the top corner. Gautrain licenced to operate from ORT Airport to Sandton

Gautrain receives licence to operate The high speed Gautrain was issued with a safety permit allowing it to legally operate between Sandton and the OR Tambo International Airport. “Viva Gautrain viva. Above all, viva public transport viva,” Transport Deputy Minister Jeremy Cronin said in handing over the certificate to the Bombela operating company. He hoped that the Gautrain would change the mindset that public transport was only for the poor and that it would encourage people to choose rail instead of road transport. Receiving the certificate, Bombela operating company chief executive officer Alain Esteve said the handover followed a long period of planning, design and preparation. The start of Gautrain’s official operations marked the beginning of a new era in the company’s existence. “It is a symbol of [the company’s] new commitment to put the safety of our customers and staff as our number one priority,” he said. World cup fans turn to cellphones

World Cup soccer fans turning more to cellphones (Reuters) – The billions of fans of soccer’s World Cup , globally the premiere sporting event, will increasingly turn to mobile phones to track the action, according to a Nielsen survey released on Thursday. More than half of the 27,000 people surveyed in 55 countries plan to follow the popular soccer tournament, which is played every four years and begins in South Africa on June 11, Nielsen said in a survey provided to Reuters. Twenty-one percent said they would get information about the tournament on their mobile device and 9 percent would download an application to track the action. “This event is the biggest in the world of sports by far,” Roger Entner, Nielsen’s senior vice president for mobile insights, said in a telephone interview. “In 2010, mobile is really starting to be a medium for soccer fans worldwide to connect with the game.” The popular FIFA soccer tournament drew more than 700 million TV viewers when it was last played in 2006, including more than 120 million U.S. viewers who watched at least one minute of World Cup telecasts, Nielsen said. While this is the first such Nielsen survey, Entner said the numbers using cellphones to follow the event will be far higher than 2006. “The last World Cup , there was no iPhone,” he said of Apple Inc’s ( AAPL.O ) popular smartphone introduced in 2007. U.S. smartphone penetration has surged to 22 percent from 3.8 percent four years ago, he said. In France, Germany , Italy, Spain and the UK the rate has grown to a range of 21 percent to 36 percent from 4 percent to 10 percent in 2006. With more powerful, faster devices and networks, those growth trends will only continue with widespread mobile video and TV being the next step, Entner said. Of those surveyed, 51 percent said they intend to follow the tournament, including 84 percent in Brazil, 83 percent in Argentina, 76 percent in South Korea , 75 percent in Italy and Portugal, 69 percent in Zambia and almost two-thirds of the people in China, Nielsen said. “It’s mind blowing. It really shows how it is a global phenomenon,” Entner said. “We see some of the highest intended usage rates actually coming out of the Middle East, Africa and the Pacific Rim.” Countries with high planned cellphone use to access World Cup information include Venezuela (27 percent), United States (23 percent) and Brazil (21 percent), Nielsen said. In fact, in every country in the Middle East and Africa where people were surveyed, the rate was between 22 percent and 30 percent. “People intend to use mobile to supplement their hunger for information about the game,” Entner said. “If you can’t watch the game live, you’re going to follow it through your mobile device.” The rates in Europe were far lower — 3 percent in soccer powers Germany and Spain — which Entner thought made sense given most of those countries were in the same time zone as the World Cup and had a higher penetration of TV sets, meaning fans could watch the game live more easily. Finally, 34 percent of those surveyed picked Brazil as the likely Cup winner, easily outdistancing Argentina, England and Germany . Entner is rooting for his native Germany but has picked Brazil. World Cup Vuvuzela Moment in South Africa

Vuvuzelas line the streets Lunga Biyela, News24 Cape Town – Hundreds of people across the country left their offices on Wednesday to blow their vuvuzelas as the 2010 FIFA World Cup draws nearer. Ex Survivor contestant Danielle Vukic and South African Sports Illustrated’s first editor Richard Whittingdale were part of a large crowd gathered in Somerset Street, Cape Town. “This is fantastic,” they told News24. “We’re now really looking forward to the World Cup. “I think this is what Cape Town needed because up until now, it’s been asleep. Cape Town has finally woken up,” said Vukic. “It also means no one will do any work until July 12,” added Whittingdale. Great day Eric Voyi said he thought the spirit in Cape Town was great. “I can’t wait for the opening match, today is a great day, everyone is happy. He said he was rooting for Bafana Bafana and that they will not disappoint. “I think that we are going to win the World Cup. Another soccer fan shared Voyi’s sentiments. “I am very happy with this. Everyone is blowing their vuvuzelas and people in the country are happy. He added that he will be watching the games at the FIFA Fan Fest at Grand Parade in Cape Town. Streets lined with people Englishman Joe Crann was also part of the festivities. “I just came out and the streets are line with people, it’s fantastic,” he said. “I’ve got tickets to see the England-Algeria game and also Holland-Cameroon. I’ve never been so excited in my life.” However, his friend Sthembiso Mntambo, who also referred to himself as Crann’s “bodyguard”, said that although it was a good initiative, a lot of people quickly went back to their offices. “It still doesn’t compare to Joburg.” Source – News 24.com 2010 World Cup Blog for the Fans

Today is the day all South Africans have been waiting for.

PHOTO: SIMON MATHEBULA All our host cities and their stadiums are ready. Fan transport and fan parks are prepared and ready for the big day. Bafana Bafana has been scoring goals and today the games begin. Bafana has had 12 consecutive wins. More than 500million people in the world are going to bring their attention to South Africa and we will not disappoint. Today Bafana Bafana takes on Mexico in the month-long tournament. Local Organising Committee chief executive Danny Jordaan yesterday said today “is going to be an incredible day”. “South Africans are late believers but once they believe, they are fanatical believers. Of course our team has increased our ability to believe,” he said. He likened the run-up to the 2010 Soccer World Cup to the struggle against apartheid, joking that his next career move might be to the post office. “Then the prison doors opened and he (Mandela) walked out … and we thought, what are we going to do next? I think I will look for a smaller job now … like a job in the post office. I think I’ve seen enough struggle.” Jordaan said during the country’s key historic moments the rest of the world – and some South Africans – always seemed to expect the worst of South Africa. “You see the headlines: “Race war’, ‘Bloodshed’, ‘Chaos’, ‘Plan B’, ‘Don’t do it’, ‘It’s not going to happen’,” Jordaan said. The recent successes of Bafana Bafana, whose tour on a party bus to Sandton in Johannesburg on Wednesday drew tens of thousands of fans on to the streets, played a big role in South Africa’s new-found optimism. “Of course our team has increased our ability to believe,” said Jordaan, referring to the 12 consecutive wins. To top the journey off, he said, he really would like to see Nelson Mandela at Soccer City during the opening this afternoon. “Nelson Mandela is 92 years old … he himself wants to be there. Whether he stays five minutes or the whole match is really not our decision. “As things stand now, there is a very, very great chance that, in fact, he’ll be there because he wants to be there. How long he will stay, that is really his decision. But we’ll just be happy if he shows his face,” Jordaan said. He said that Mandela had been the symbol of unity for a democratic South Africa, whose citizens saw racial barriers being torn down in the run-up to the Cup, especially when the Blue Bulls rugby team trekked to Soweto for the Super 14 finals . “ Today was set to become a pivotal day in South Africa and Africa’s history . It is a psychological barrier that has been crossed … it’s an assertion of who we are as Africans and what we can deliver.” Source – Sowetan.com 2010 World Cup Blog for the Fans
