YouTube Jihad: American Terror Imam Radicalizing Muslim Youth Online

He may be playing hide-and-seek from drone missiles in the caves of Yemen, but Al Qaeda cleric Anwar Al-Awlaki is still attempting to poison the minds of young Muslim Americans through the use of YouTube and other social media. The extent of Al-Awlaki’s reach on the internet is outlined in a new report released by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) on Aug. 28. The report describes the millions of views garnered by Al-Awlaki’s YouTube video clips and the online networking of his rabid fan base. A former imam at the Dar al-Hijrah mosque in Virginia, the American-born Al-Awlaki has increasingly been using social media as a recruiting method for would-be jihadists, leading terrorist watchers to dub him the “[Osama] bin Laden of the internet” and the “sheikh of YouTube.” Al-Awlaki has been tied to the Sept. 11 hijackers, the Christmas Day bomber and the Fort Hood shooter. This past spring, President Obama ordered that the cleric be killed on sight, but the American Civil Liberties Union filed suit on Aug. 30 to prevent the military from targeting the U.S. citizen without a trial. According to MEMRI, after Al-Awlaki’s personal website was shuttered in 2009, YouTube became the “largest clearinghouse of his online videos.” “A quick tabulation of viewings of Al-Awlaki’s 2,500-plus clips – comprising lectures, sermons, and compilation videos supporting his jihadist philosophy – now indicates well over three million views, and counting,” MEMRI reported. “These clips include Al-Awlaki calling Muslims to jihad, expressions of support for martyrdom attacks, and encouragement to kill American soldiers.” Al-Awlaki has even begun posting his recruitment videos directly to YouTube, as opposed to the radical Islamist websites that normally host those types of clips. A search for “Al Awlaki” on YouTube turns up 4,600 results, These videos are publicly accessible, and can easily be viewed by children. In one extreme case, a young American Muslim follower of Al-Awlaki created a “Jihadi Fan Club” page on YouTube, which MEMRI called “a clear example of a young American convert radicalized by YouTube.” “Anwar Al-Awlaki is NOT a terrorist. He simply wants America to change its unjust foreign policy,” wrote Jihadi Fan Club on his YouTube page. “He does NOT call for fighting out of hatred for America, he call for fighting in the name of self defense. Anwar Al-Awlaki tells the sincere Muslims to fight against the U.S. troops and all the oppressors of the Muslims.” Underneath one video in support of the Ground Zero mosque, Jihadi Fan Club posted a shout-out to Al-Awlaki and Abu Monsour Al-Amriki – an American-born member of terror group Al-Shabab who posts his own rap videos endorsing jihad on YouTube – thanking the terrorists for their “inspiration.” In another post, Jihad Fan Club argued that the Americans murdered on Sept. 11 were not innocent civilians, and that they deserved the attack because they supported the U.S. economic and foreign policies. “[P]eople want to say, ‘Well, the people who did 9/11, they attacked innocent people.’ Well not necessarily; you pretend like the World Trade Center and the Pentagon was a daycare center or a maternity ward. No. The World Trade Center was the epicenter of American economy that funds so much death and destruction in the Muslim world,” wrote Jihad Fan Club under a video expressing support for the Sept. 11 attacks. “If the people who did 9/11 wanted to kill innocent people, they would have bombed a school, they would have bombed a church, they would have bombed a daycare center, they would have bombed a grocery store.” Underneath a video of a CNN news program, Jihad Fan Club wrote that “Muslim lap dogs” are trying to trick other Muslims into condemning terrorism and being kind to non-Muslims. “Killing the innocent is WORNG [sic], but CNN has an EVIL agenda which is to trick you into thinking that terrorism is caused by misguided Muslims instead of U.S. foreign policy,” wrote Jihad Fan Club. “They also want you to spend your time condemning terrorist attacks instead of using your power to fight against the American government, its puppet regimes and its allies which is the cause of all the violence in the Muslim world and the terror attacks in the US & Canada. Oh Muslims please do not be fooled by these evil disbelievers and their Muslim lap dogs. A real Muslim is always harsh towards the non Muslims and lenient towards the Muslims.” Jihad Fan Club’s page also features videos by the American-born Al Qaeda spokesman Adam Gadahn, and praise for terror leader Osama bin Laden. Al-Awlaki’s use of the internet as a recruiting tool is noteworthy, especially because of the success the cleric has had at recruiting and inspiring American-grown terrorists in the past. MEMRI lists more than a dozen terrorist suspects that were radicalized through Al-Awlaki’s online presence, including Paul and Nadia Rockwood (an Alaskan couple who made a “hit-list” of U.S. officials who “desecrated Islam”), Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan, Time Square bomber Faisal Shahzad, and Sharif Mobley (a 24-year old American who is charged with killing a Yemeni soldier). Al-Awlaki was also a spiritual adviser to two of the Sept. 11 hijackers and Christmas Day bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. But MEMRI noted that the jihadist infiltration of YouTube is unlikely to end soon. “[A]s Western governments increasingly take down and interfere with traditional terrorist websites, Al-Qaeda and other jihadists have grown more dependent upon on YouTube and other social media outlets, including Facebook and Twitter. To date, these outlets seem unprepared to effectively address this problem,” the group reported. According to YouTube’s “Community Guidelines,” hate speech is not permitted on the website. “We encourage free speech and defend everyone’s right to express unpopular points of view. But we don’t permit hate speech (speech which attacks or demeans a group based on race or ethnic origin, religion, disability, gender, age, veteran status, and sexual orientation/gender identity),” reads the Community Guidelines. A spokeswoman for YouTube told the Media Research Center that “Because it is difficult to verify the identity of users who post videos…an individual who claims to be a member of a terrorist organization (a claim we may not be able to verify) but who posts videos and comments that comply with the rules, may not be suspended from the site.” However, she said that users who “encourage others to commit specific, serious acts of violence, with or without claiming membership in a terrorist group, would be in violation of our policies.” One of the reasons why YouTube has difficult time addressing the problem of terrorist videos on the site may be because the enormous number of videos uploaded each day makes it nearly impossible to review and approve each one individually. “Every minute, 24 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube, totaling hundreds of thousands of videos every day.  To be able to offer YouTube at this scale, we cannot review content before it goes live,” said the spokeswoman. This isn’t the first time that YouTube has been cited for having controversial content on its site. A Media Research Center special report found that the website features thousands of sexually explicit videos, including soft-core porn, and is often used by porn producers to drive traffic to their X-rated websites.

Cutting Spending is Sexist! WaPo Headline: ‘British Women to Bear Budget Pain’

Liberal Democratic strategists reading today’s Washington Post are probably taking notes, preparing talking points for a future which may hold a Republican Congress in the cards. “British women to bear budget pain” cried the page A6 headline. “Report says austerity plan mostly cuts into women’s livelihoods,” added the subheader for London-based Post staffer Anthony Faiola’s  story. Faiola noted that “[t]he Fawcett Society, a leading women’s rights group here, filed an unprecedented complaint with the nation’s high court this month, arguing that the government failed to consider the effect on women of its leaner ’emergency budget.'” At no point did Faiola find a critic to allege that the social welfare system in Britain itself was “sexist” or at least that it victimizes poor Britons, particularly women, by creating a culture of dependency on the state. Indeed, among his 19 paragraphs, Faiola quickly dispatched the Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition’s defense with a brief quote from finance minister George Osborne in paragraph 13. Faiola quickly got back on track two paragraphs later by noting that “[s]ome Britons… see the cuts as anything but fair,” and then turning to the lament of one Joanne Morgan “a divorced mother of three teenagers” who works for the state and “is set to lose $285 a month in child-assistance payments.” Of course, Faiola failed to balance out Morgan’s tale of woe by finding an average bloke in a pub to dismiss as poppycock the argument that budget cuts are sexist.

Robyn Is ‘Super-Duper Excited’ To Perform At VMAs

Swedish superstar will perform a ‘never-before-heard mix’ of ‘Dancing on My Own’ with VMA house artist Deadmau5. By James Montgomery Robyn Photo: Roger Kisby/ Getty Images Somewhat lost in last week’s announcement that both Usher and Paramore will be performing at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards was the news of who else would be joining the festivities … and no, we’re not talking about the stars of “The Social Network.” It’s Robyn, the Swedish superstar who, slowly but surely, has begun her stateside assault with a pair of highly touted pop albums ( Body Talk Part 1 and Body Talk Part 2, both released this year, with a third installment due in December), a stirring single and video ( “Hang With Me” ), and a string of sweat-drenched, sweet-and-salty live shows . And on VMA night, she’ll take another step towards mainstream success when she performs with house artist Deadmau5 during the big show. She’s just one of the artists who’ll be jamming with Deadmau5 — other confirmed acts include Travie McCoy and Jason Derulo — but she’s certainly the one with the most to prove. After all, to most VMA viewers, she’ll be the wild card, the great unknown. And, as she told MTV News, Robyn is more than honored to be performing … and definitely looking forward to the challenge. “Deadmau5 is fantastic and I’m super-duper excited to be able to perform for the VMA audience,” she said in an email. “I’m gonna be ‘dancing on my own’!” That, of course, is a reference to a (really awesome) single from the first Body Talk album — she’ll be performing “a never-before-heard mix” of it at the VMAs — and though you probably aren’t familiar just yet, we’re willing to bet that after Robyn rocks the show, that will change. Quickly. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, from now through September 12. Nicki Minaj And Drake End Twitter Marriage

‘My husband Drake and I have decided to have our marriage annulled,’ Minaj tweets. By Mawuse Ziegbe Drake and Nicki Minaj Photo: Getty Images Well, that was fast. Hip-hop’s favorite e-spouses, Nicki Minaj and Drake, are no longer together. Only a day after announcing their union on the social-networking site , Minaj tweeted that she and Drizzy have called it quits. “Dear Barbz, My husband Drake and I have decided to have our marriage annulled. We’ll maintain joint custody. Luv, HB,” the Young Money Barbie wrote on Saturday. When asked by Twitter fan MissBrownBear who they were sharing custody of, Minaj “All our SONS.” Hip-hop fans began buzzing on Friday when both MCs wrote on their Twitter pages that they had wed. “Please refer to @nickiminaj as Mrs. Aubrey Drake Graham and dont stare at her too long. She’s finally mine. :),” Drake tweeted. Minaj also wrote “Yes, its true. Drake and I tied the knot.” While the duo’s tweets made headlines, the missives were apparently just in good fun. Minaj’s announcement comes after reps for the artists denied that they had ever made it to the altar. Regardless of their marital status, Minaj and Drake have always been tight . Last year, Minaj said that she and her Young Money labelmate are “super-close.” “Before all of this started, I would tell him, ‘You’re a star.’ And he’d be like, ‘You’re a star.’ And we’d kinda been each other’s biggest fans,” Minaj told MTV News. “To see his dreams come into fruition, it makes me very happy.” Earlier this year, Drake said on MTV2’s “Sucker Free Countdown” that “I’ve always really, actually, really had a crush on her, always really loved her, and she’s always just looked at me as, like, her little brother.” However, Minaj said that Drake was playing up their relationship for the entertainment factor and denied rumors that the MCs are more than just friends. “Drake does not have a crush on me,” Minaj said later on “Sucker Free.” “Drake knows how to get you guys’ attention.” Many fans were disappointed by Minaj’s announcement that she and Drizzy are not married. TreyGivesMePPP tweeted to the rapper, “barb you just broke my heart! DRICKI FOREVER!” fashioning catchy portmanteau for the duo. But Minaj gently reminded her followers that they will have to share her eventually. “Barbz 1 day mommy will have to fall in love,” Minaj tweeted . “Don’t b selfish.” What do you think about Nicki Minaj announcing that she and Drake are not married? N.Y. Times Recirculates Supermarket Tabloid Story in Sympathetic Story on Obama ‘Misperceptions’

The New York Times prizes itself as the newspaper of record, as the very definition of prestige media. So it’s a little shocking to see them spreading the latest headlines from the Globe supermarket tabloid. Sheryl Gay Stolberg’s mournful story about Obama’s “otherness” and how “Misperceptions Stick” about the president began: Americans need only stand in line at the grocery checkout counter to glimpse the conspiracy theories percolating about President Obama. “Birthplace Cover-Up,” screams the current issue of the racy tabloid Globe. “Obama’s Secret Life Exposed!” The article claims, without proof, that Mr. Obama uses a phony Social Security number as “part of an elaborate scheme to conceal that he is not a natural-born U.S. citizen.” Despite evidence to the contrary from Obama aides — they posted his birth certificate, from Hawaii, on the Internet during his presidential campaign — polls show that as many as one quarter of Americans still believe Mr. Obama was born outside the United States. This must be more publicity for a Globe tabloid concoction than you’d see out of Fox News or the Rush Limbaugh program. But it’s used to illustrate how the president is bedeviled by lies. Stolberg didn’t seem to consider that the Globe and other supermarket tabloids also published stories about Laura Bush divorcing President Bush, of Bush is “back on the bottle,” and so on. But that didn’t seem to outrage the New York Times. Stolberg’s melodramatic woe-is-Barry intro was meant to set up the latest Pew Research Center poll, in which “18 percent now believe he is Muslim,” and even “Among Democrats, for example, just 46 percent said Obama was Christian, down from 55 percent in March 2009.” She also went back to the birthers: As to the issue of his birthplace, a CNN poll released this month when the president turned 49 found that 27 percent of Americans doubted he was born in the United States. A New York Times/ CBS News poll in April put the figure at 20 percent.” The Times illustrated the story with a birther sign from “members of the Tea Party movement in San Francisco” in May. The humorous segment of the story came soon after: “Dan Pfeiffer, the White House communications director, said aides did work hard to push back against misinformation in a news media environment in which ‘the tweets of discredited rabble-rousers have as much credence to many as the pronouncements of the paper of record.'” Pfeiffer did not acknowledge the “paper of record,” the Times has employed a few “discredited rabble-rousers” all its own. Then, Stolberg’s stenography from the White House really began, starting with a professor most appropriately named Gushee: “This is a president who gave really compelling speeches about faith and values, memorable stuff,” said the Rev. Dr. David P. Gushee, a professor of Christian ethics at Mercer University who has advised Mr. Obama on religious matters . “And you’re not hearing that voice right now.” The White House says the public — and the press — are not listening. Since taking office, Mr. Obama has given six speeches either from a church pulpit or addressing religion in public life — including an Easter prayer breakfast where he “offered a very personal and candid reflection of what the Resurrection means to him,” said Joshua DuBois, who runs the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. But the Easter address attracted scant attention in the news media. That would also be true of a prayer breakfast address to pastors by President Bush. Here’s the one sentence the New York Times provided on April 7, 2010, in a story on the West Virginia coal mine collapse: “In Washington on Tuesday during an Easter prayer breakfast, President Obama offered his condolences to the families of the victims and said the federal government was ready to help in whatever way needed.” Then Stolberg really sidestepped hard facts and misled the reader: “And the fact that the Obama family has not joined a church in Washington — the president has said his presence would be too disruptive — has not helped, because the public rarely sees images of them attending services.” She doesn’t mention that the president’s attendance at religious services can be counted on one hand, and he skipped the pews at Christmas. She doesn’t even hint at the fact that President Obama is much more likely to go golfing on a Sunday than go to church. At least Stolberg didn’t repeat the line that Obama effectively replaces church services with ten-second glances at inspirational verses on his BlackBerry, another spin that Joshua DuBois and the White House have employed. Stolberg then provided another White House-orchestrated source, in addition to Gushee and DuBois: The White House says Mr. Obama prays daily, sometimes in person or over the telephone with a small circle of Christian pastors. One of them, the Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell, who was also a spiritual adviser to former President George W. Bush, telephoned a reporter on Wednesday, at the White House’s behest . He said he was surprised that the number of Americans who say Mr. Obama is Muslim is growing. “I must say,” Mr. Caldwell said, “ never in the history of modern-day presidential politics has a president confessed his faith in the Lord, and folks basically call him a liar .” That’s a rather astonishing ending for the Times. It’s one thing to suggest the American people are suffering from misperceptions. It’s another to suggest a large fraction of the American people are ignobly calling Obama a liar. On Thursday, Rush Limbaugh responded on the air by suggesting the press seems to be catering to the White House and its journalistic colleagues, and the ignorant, unsophisticated (supermarket-tabloid-gobbling) public has become the enemy. “The New York Times didn’t write this to inform you,” he said in singling out the Stolberg article.

Howard Dean Former DNC Chair the latest Dem to Spew Hatred!

Former Vermont Governor Howard Dean, in a surprise move Wednesday, became the second high profile Democrat to come out against the building of a cultural center and mosque two blocks away from Ground Zero. “This is something that we ought to be able to work out with people of good faith,” Dean said in an interview with WABC radio. “We have to understand that it is a real affront to people who’ve lost their lives, including Muslims. “That site doesn’t belong to any particular religion … So I think a good reasonable compromise could be worked out without violating the principle that people ought to be able to worship as they see fit.” Dean, one of the more liberal members of the party who ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004 before serving as head of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), suggested the mosque should be moved. added by: congoboy
