Well, that didn’t take long … Michael Sam’s OWN Documentary Postponed Via NYDailyNews Oprah has punted, for now, on a planned documentary series about openly gay NFL draftee Michael Sam. The Oprah Winfrey Network announced Friday it will postpone the untitled documentary, claiming it didn’t want to hurt the fledgling football star’s chances of making it onto the St. Louis Rams. The team drafted Sam, the first openly gay player drafted by the National Football League, last week in a ground-breaking moment for professional sports. Cameramen for the documentary would have followed the former University of Missouri defensive end as he tried to earn a spot on the squad. The show’s air date and the number of episodes were never announced. OWN Network president Erik Logan said postponing the documentary would give “Michael the best opportunity to achieve his dream of making the team.” “OWN is about elevating and empowering people to achieve their best,” he said in a statement. “It’s clear that we, along with the world, recognize the important opportunity that Michael now has in this moment.” We’re sure there are plenty of folks who are more than happy about this recent development. As a typical Facebook user knows, out of our (on average) several hundred “friends,” often only a handful are “real” friends regularly seen face-to-face. Mikel McLaughlin has set out to change that. The 35-year-old set out in a red Volkswagen Beetle on a journey to spend time with each of his 400-plus Facebook friends … some for the first time ever. McLaughlin is documenting the social-media-meets-real-world adventure on his website We’re Friends, Right? He posts photos of his friends like this one: McLaughlin tells People : “I recognized that I had many Facebook friends with which I had little-to-no actual relationship. I wanted to change that, or at least see if it was possible to do so.” “I feel that having a closer relationship with a person helps me to be better. It’s easy to belittle, berate and dismiss somebody with which you have no relationship.” “But when you spend time at their dinner table, play games with their kids, and hear about their lives, it’s a little bit more difficult to be unkind and uncaring toward them.” So far, he has made it through roughly a third of his Facebook list of 400-plus, with only 25 percent being folks he already considered real-life friends. After each meetup, McLaughlin writes a short summary of the day with his “friend” outside the Web, keeping their names private and using only initials. Ranging from awkward to adorable, many of these encounters consist of simply sharing a meal and a conversation. McLaughlin says it’s been worthwhile: “Just about every time I meet with a Facebook friend, my interaction with them is my new most memorable visit, at least until I meet up with the next Facebook friend.” McLaughlin has no set timeline for his experiment, explaining that he is more focused on the quality of the visits, not the quantity or speed involved. Back home in Minnesota for now, he plans to spend time getting together with local Facebook friends before hitting the road once more. We wish him luck. Former School Secretary Fired For Racist Obama Facebook Post If he had just kept his personal feelings to himself, he would still have a job. According to Raw Story: A former school secretary in Harlingen, TX sued the school district for firing him over a racist post on the social medium Facebook. Courthouse News Service reported that Abel Gonzalez believes that his right of free speech was infringed upon by the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District. Gonzales’ suit, which was filed in the Federal Court in Brownsville on Monday, said, “On Saturday, August 25, 2012 at 9:08 a.m., plaintiff was at home on his own personal computer, when plaintiff received an e-mail from the Huffington Post’s Facebook page.” “The Facebook page had a picture of a little girl chasing President Obama in the Oval Office and beneath the picture were the words, ‘Caption this,’” the complaint continued. “Plaintiff wrote ‘Run N****r Run.’” A commenter on Huffington Post’s page named C. Orlando Pettiford saw Rodriguez’ racist post and copied and pasted it to the Dr. Rodriguez Elementary School Facebook page, the school where Gonzales worked as a secretary. On the same day, school principal Tracy Gonzalez [no relation to the plaintiff] received notice about the racist post. On September 7, 2012, School Superintendent Steve Flores placed Gonzales on administrative leave. Two weeks later, Gonzales was fired. He is suing the school district for $2 million in damages for “conspiracy, civil rights violations and violations of the First Amendment and due process violations, with an emphasis on the First Amendment claims,” said CNS. Mother Arrested For Beating Son And Posting Footage on Facebook via Daily Mail The Michigan grandmother and mother of an 11-year-old boy have been charged with child abuse after a video was posted on Facebook showing the child being slapped in the face and beaten more than 50 times with a belt. Demitria Latrion Powell, 28, the boy’s mother and Uteas Michelle Taylor, 42, the boy’s grandmother, both of Flint, were charged today third-degree child abuse. Stefon Tirrell Felton, 39, also of Flint, who filmed the video, was also charged with child abuse. He says in the video he was locked up for 10 years. The six-minute video, which also shows the boy getting hit in the face by his mother, was shared more than 1,000 times before it was removed from the social media site. In the video, the boy is asked to his name. When he doesn’t say it loud enough, Powell violently slaps him in the face, and then says, ‘Say it like you got sense.’ She then adds, ‘Now it’s going on Facebook so keep it in mind. The boy is warned not to get involved in gang activity. NBC25 also reported that the boy was being punished for putting false statements on his own Facebook page. His mother then says, ‘Now grandma is going to get in there. i’m out of it.’ After a few more second, shje adds, ‘Call [Child Protective Services] if you want to. Watch this ass whipping this gangster is going to get.’ In the background, Taylor can be heard saying ‘I’ve been waiting all day for this.’ She then proceeeds to repeatedly hits the boy with a belt. At one point, she hits him so hard in the back of his legs, his legs start to buckle and he winces in pain.
Chris Brown is in jail at the moment, but just because he’s locked up doesn’t mean the hot-tempered singer can’t create drama on the outside. Two of Chris’ exes nearly had a run-in last at a Hollywood nightclub. Besides, maybe Tran wasn’t afraid of a physical confrontation and just wanted to avoid partying with her ex’s ex. Even semi-celebrities like Karrueche probably hate awkward situations like that. While a cat fight between Rihanna and Karrueche would’ve been hugely entertaining, we’re glad they’re just avoiding each other like grownups. You won’t believe this, but a Dallas man who sent a resume, job application, and photograph of his penis to a Texas company did not get the position. He is, however, in a precarious legal position as a result. He faces a misdemeanor charge for his trouble, as the recipients were apparently unamused. The man was hilariously applying for a position at Texas Workforce Solutions, a company devoted to, of all things, preparing clients for the workplace. When a 25-year-old employee of the organization received the guy’s application and unique letter of recommendation (so to speak), she promptly called police. They tracked his application, which had been sent from a personal email and issued the man a ticket for “obscene display or distribution,” a class C misdemeanor. A spokesperson for the Dallas Police Department confirmed this actually happened , and said that as far as he can tell, the man is still unemployed. “I think I know why he can’t find a job,” he reportedly told the Dallas Observer . Yeah.
