Amazon is hearing it from many sides today, following a sale on its UK website Saturday of T-shirts that encourage violence against women. The items – manufactured and also sold in the U.S. – included slogans such as “Keep Calm and Rape a Lot” and “Keep Calm and Rape Them.” They were retailing for between $23 and $26. It didn’t take long for Amazon to remove the shirts, but not before receiving hundreds of complains. Harriet Harman – the shadow Culture Secretary in Great Britain – even called on the online retailer to make a “substantial donation” to a women’s refuge as a way to make up for selling the offensive T-shirts. As for the company that produced the attire? Michael Fowler – the founder of Melbourne’s Solid Gold Bomb – has issued an apology on his brand’s website . It reads: “No words can express how I feel about what has occurred and in no way do I condone or promote this serious issue. I will offer a more in depth explanation of cause to explain what and how this occurred. Both myself and our company and it’s associated Solid Gold Bomb brand have never had any intention of the spread of violent slogans or even poor taste humor t-shirts. This was a computer error of my creation and I accept my responsibility in the matter.” No word yet on whether Solid Gold Bomb or Amazon plans to make donations of any kind in response to the mishap.
