Ebonee Davis is on the rise for being just who she is. In this TED Talk from the University of Nevada, Ebonee explains the psychological warfare waged against black children dealing with the “good hair” prejudice in the black community. TED : After Alton Sterling was murdered by police last summer, Ebonee Davis wrote a letter to the fashion industry highlighting the duty fashion media has to help change the perception of black people. In her impassioned talk, she further explores this idea as she recalls her experiences as a black model in the industry. She emphasizes that the fashion industry does not only reflect and beauty standards, its a reflection of the current state of our democracy. As creators of media, the industry must work to reinstate the humanity of the systematically dehumanized and create a society where everyone can take pride in who they are and where they come from. After being discovered at the age of 18, Ebonee Davis left Seattle for New York City to pursue her modeling dream. Throughout her fast-track career, she’s graced the pages of some of the most coveted publications in fashion, from Teen Vogue to Sports Illustrated. Davis was one of six finalists in the Sports Illustrated Model Search and she appeared in two of Calvin Klein’s new campaigns.
Lebron James, Kevin Durant, Alicia Keys Star In Nike’s Equality Campaign With Under Armour outchea Trumpin’ we couldn’t be more proud to see Nike has produced a stunning visual display for their new Equality campaign, which launched February 12. The ad stars Nike athletes Lebron James, Kevin Durant, Serena Williams, Gabby Douglas alongside others as Alicia Keys sings in the background as an important message is read: Is this the land history promised? This field of play. Where the dream of fairness and mutual respect lives on. Where you are defined by actions, not your looks and beliefs. For too long these ideals have taken refuge inside these lines. Equality should have no boundaries. The bond between players should exist between people. Opportunity should be indiscriminate. Worth should outshine color. The ball should bounce the same for everyone. If we can be equals here, we can be equals everywhere. #EQUALITY #nike NIKE also launched a Black History collection this year, which is available along with Equality apparel on the homepage for the Equality campaign HERE

The President has a busy schedule today that includes a White House visit from the World Series Champs, the Washington Cubs. According to right fielder Jason Heyward, it’s a huge honor and the significance of being a black man meeting with the first black President on MLK day isn’t lost on him. Via ESPN: “This is the ultimate time to go to the White House as an athlete, to meet the president after winning a ring,” Cubs right fielder Jason Heyward said at this weekend’s Cubs winter fan convention. “For me, being an African-American, there’s something (special) about it. And for my teammates who are from Venezuela, there’s something about it, guys from Alabama or Mississippi (or wherever), there’s something about it for them. Yes, there’s a lot of significance for a lot of different reasons.” Later President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will complete an MLK Day service project. The First couple will take to Jobs Have Priority Naylor Road Family Shelter to meet with needy families. They will also donate a White House swing set previously used by Sasha and Malia Obama.
