Singer debuts music video for her ‘Part of Me 3-D’ track and sits down for an exclusive interview with MTV.com. By Amy Wilkinson, with reporting by Sway Calloway Katy Perry Photo: Katy Perry — consummate California Gurl and queen of cotton-candy pop — has a dark side, and she’s revealing it in her latest music video, for “Wide Awake.” The chanteuse stopped by MTV News on Monday (June 18) to debut the clip for her “Katy Perry: Part of Me” track (the song was written specifically for her upcoming 3-D concert movie), in addition to sitting down for a wide-ranging 30-minute interview with Sway Calloway on MTV.com. Of course, Perry’s litter of KatyCats had plenty of questions for the singer, and she was more than happy to oblige. Madeline from Michigan asked via video what Perry wanted fans to feel while listening to her latest hit. “Well, this song, I have a lot of different emotions and feelings in all of my songs,” Perry revealed. “This song in particular is a dose of reality. It’s kind of like coming down from a high. You’ve been on cloud nine for so long, and it can’t always be so sweet and sometimes you need to realize that, and you have to pick yourself up and move forward and face the facts of life and know that this is just a lesson you learn and you’re stronger because of it.” The video opens with Perry wrapping production on her earlier Snoop Dogg collaboration, “California Gurls.” We see her retreat to her dressing room, where she removes her candy-colored wig and is suddenly transported into a sort of gothic fairy tale, where she’s left to navigate a dizzying maze alongside her younger self. It’s a bit of a departure for the Teenage Dream songstress, but not a surprising one considering the year she’s had, including her divorce from comedian Russell Brand , whom she was married to for more than a year. Yet, as the video concludes, Perry emerges from the labyrinth unscathed and without the help of Prince Charming (in fact, she punches him out), and it’s clear Katy is going to be all right on her own. “Katy Perry: Part of Me,” the 3-D concert movie, hits theaters July 5. Stay tuned as we roll out more from our exclusive “Wide Awake” interview with Katy Perry! Related Videos MTV First: Katy Perry’s ‘Wide Awake’ Related Artists Katy Perry

Tom Cruise rescues rock and roll musical that ‘wins no prizes for originality,’ critics say. By Kara Warner Julianne Hough in “Rock of Ages” Photo: It’s relatively safe to say “Rock of Ages” has built-in appeal: It’s based on a hit Broadway musical of the same name and features a slew of A-list actors singing and dancing along to some of the biggest hits of the 1980s. Despite all those charms, including the top billing of action star turned rock star Tom Cruise, the whimsical musical is not quite a surefire hit among critics and sits at a less-than-fresh rating over at Rotten Tomatoes . Sing along as we take a walk through the “Rock of Ages” reviews. The Story ” ‘Rock of Ages,’ a rags-to-riches rock ‘n’ roll musical set mostly in a music club on Sunset Strip, wins no prizes for originality. A lot of it is zesty entertainment, with some energetic musical numbers; several big names (Tom Cruise, Russell Brand, Alec Baldwin) prove they can sing well enough to play the Strip if they lose the day job. The two leads are Diego Boneta, as a bartender in the Strip’s hottest club, and Julianne Hough, as a naive kid just off the bus from the Midwest. They’re both gifted singers and join the others in doing covers of 1980s rock classics. Of course they also fall in love. Of course they have heartfelt conversations while standing behind the ‘Hollywood’ sign. Of course they break up because of a tragic misunderstanding. Of course their mistake is repaired and (spoiler!) they’re back together at the end. Has ever a romance in a musical been otherwise?” — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times The Music and Singing “It looks like Disneyland and sounds, well, like a bad Broadway musical, with all the power belting and jazz-hand choreography that implies. To put it another way, there’s way too much Journey on the soundtrack, and Foreigner. There’s also an REO Speedwagon ditty, a few from Twisted Sister, Def Leppard and Poison, and at least two hits that were released after 1987 (‘More Than Words’ and ‘I Remember You’). All the songs are sung, mostly without shame or distinction, by the actors themselves, who slide into the warbling as if into a conversation. A grizzled, bewigged Mr. Baldwin enunciates through his songs, in the Rex Harrison mold, to play a rock survivor, Dennis Dupree, who runs the Bourbon with his sidekick, Lonny (Mr. Brand). They make their stale buddy routine and romance amusing and, as with the rest of the adults, make the movie bearable. A whispering and writhing Mr. Cruise makes it watchable.” — Manohla Dargis, New York Times The Cruise Factor “The real reason to see ‘Rock of Ages,’ though, is Tom Cruise. He doesn’t sing much, and the one big onstage number he’s given — shredding Def Leppard’s ‘Pour Some Sugar on Me’ under a rain of shaken-up beer from the audience — relies heavily on postproduction and backup singing, probably to mask his vocal shortcomings. But especially in his scenes with [Paul] Giamatti and Malin Akerman (as a Rolling Stone critic who’s the only one with the guts to call Stacee on his ersatz-Marlon Brando B.S.), Cruise goes to a deep, dark, almost deliberately repellent place I’m not sure he’s ever been before (in ‘Magnolia,’ maybe, and in a comic mode as the profane studio head Les Grossman in ‘Tropic Thunder’). The isolation and paranoia brought on by extreme fame is something Tom Cruise clearly understands from the inside out — and what we know, or think we know, about the actor’s personal eccentricities can’t help but color our understanding of Stacee as well. When Cruise and Akerman have lurid (but still PG-13) sex atop an air-hockey table while singing Foreigner’s ‘I Want to Know What Love Is,’ Cruise’s expressions of erotic anguish are like something out of Steve McQueen’s sex-addiction drama ‘Shame,’ with a hint of tragic drag queen thrown in. Cruise’s portrait of the rock star as empty-eyed nihilist doesn’t really belong in this gaudy pop trinket of a movie — it’s both too outsized and too inward — but that’s precisely what makes for its fascination. ‘Rock of Ages’ is only recommended for audiences with a taste for highly processed cheese, but it did leave me hopeful that the next decade may see the rise of Weird Tom Cruise.” — Dana Stevens, Slate The Final Word ” ‘Rock of Ages’ is an effulgent celebration of fakeness. It isn’t trying to be real; it’s trying to be faker than any fake thing has ever been before. Compared to this fake musical set in a fake version of the past that spins a ridiculously fake narrative of pop-culture history, ‘Mamma Mia’ (the last jukebox musical to be vilified by critics and embraced by the public) is pretty much a mumblecore movie. ‘Rock of Ages’ is so remarkably fake it’s almost ur-fake or meta-fake; you can watch the globs of trans fats congealing on its preternaturally bright surfaces as it cools. This movie could hardly seem more weirdly artificial if it had been jointly hatched by David Lynch and John Waters, and raised in a lab on a steady diet of Foreigner hits and original Broadway-cast recordings. I’m not claiming this movie is good for you, Lord knows. It’s a little bit like eating a Happy Meal at 4:30 in the morning after a long night of Jagermeister and nitrous oxide. But not to put too fine a point on it, if you ain’t lookin’ for nothin’ but a good time, why should you resist? Some people who claim to understand the public appetite smell an expensive flop here, and that well may be. But I’m here to tell you that this movie is almost too weird to be believed, and that if you share even a fraction of my taste for perversity you should check it out.” — Andrew O’Hehir, Salon Check out everything we’ve got on “Rock of Ages.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . The clip will premiere during ‘MTV First: Katy Perry’ at 7:53 p.m. ET this Tuesday, June 19, on MTV. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Sway Calloway Katy Perry Photo: We only have to wait a few more days until the world premiere of Katy Perry ‘s latest music video for her newest hit single, “Wide Awake.” Perry is bringing the anticipated clip to MTV on Tuesday via “MTV First: Katy Perry.” Perry has said the song, along with certain aspects of the video, is all about her journey of self-discovery during the past year. Of her inspiration for the song and the video, Perry told MTV News, “I just wanted to tell a story about myself going through this journey, maybe sometimes trying to get out of the maze. There’s good parts; there’s bad parts. Of course, there has been a lot of things that went on last year that I had to get through and overcome. I think what probably kept me going is just the purity of my belief in music.” Judging from what we saw in the recent teaser trailer, “Wide Awake” is all wrapped up in a fairytale or at least in a fairytale-like setting. Perry appears to be playing the princess, and along her journey encounters a poisoned strawberry, a curious cat, Prince Charming and a young girl. Make sure to tune into MTV this Tuesday, June 19, at 7:53 p.m. ET for the worldwide premiere of the clip, followed by an exclusive 30-minute interview with Katy and MTV’s Sway Calloway on MTV.com, during which Perry will discuss all the details about the song, which she wrote for her upcoming 3-D concert film, “Katy Perry: Part of Me.” The “Wide Awake” video will also debut on VH1, Logo and TeenNick, in addition to MTV.com, VH1.com and LOGOtv.com. Perry’s fans around the globe will be able to stream the video online at KatyPerry.MTV.com. Katy Perry’s “Wide Awake” video premieres at 7:53 p.m. ET Tuesday, June 19, on MTV! San Francisco Giants pitcher, the 22nd man to toss a perfect game, got us thinking about musical perfectos. By James Montgomery The San Fransisco Giants’ Matt Cain Photo: On Wednesday night, San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain made baseball history — and totally helped my fantasy team — by tossing a perfect game against the Houston Astros. For those who have no idea what that means, Cain faced the minimum of batters — 27 — and didn’t allow a single base-runner. That means no walks, no hits, no anything over nine innings (with 14 strikeouts to boot). If that sounds impressive, well, it is : Only 22 pitchers have ever thrown a perfect game in the 143-year history of Major League Baseball, and somewhat surprisingly, the list of those who’ve accomplished the feat reads less like a who’s who of MLB greats as it does a who’s that ? For every Hall of Famer (Cy Young, Sandy Koufax, Catfish Hunter) to reach perfection, there are just as many pitchers who made history and then were history. I’m talking about the likes of Len Barker, Mike Witt and Charlie Robertson, each of whom were perfect for one glorious game and never again came close to matching that perfection. And yet, that’s what makes the perfect game so special. On any day, anyone can throw one; all it takes is the right mixture of luck, skill and, well, more luck. And yet, of the thousands of men who’ve toed the rubber in the majors over the past century-plus, fewer than 2 dozen have actually done it. The perfect game is the ultimate mythologizer: Pulling it off automatically earns you a permanent place in baseball lore — and for most, it will be the unquestionable highlight of their professional career. So, in honor of Cain’s feat, I’ve spent the majority of the day trying to figure out what the musical equivalent of a perfect game might be. Certainly, it has to be historic: an album or song that came out of nowhere to define a time or an era to such a degree that it has become the stuff of music legend. Secondly, it has to be the crowning achievement of an artist’s career, especially since the overwhelming number of pitchers who have tossed perfectos are basically the MLB equivalent of one-hit-wonders (I’m looking at you, Philip Humber). Sure, the Beatles, Radiohead and Jay-Z have probably all been perfect, but, like Young or Koufax or Hunter, what’s one more accolade to any of them? And finally, well, it has to be perfect : the perfect album for the time, the perfect song for the moment, the perfectly recognizable riff or sample — we’re talking history here, people. Anyway, here are my picks for music’s 10 perfect games — and if there’s an album or song I’ve missed, let me know in the comments below. The Sex Pistols, Never Mind the Bullocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols Lean and mean, sneering and snotty, it’s not only one of the most perfect albums of all time, it may very well be the most perfect debut in history. When it was released in 1977, it shocked pretty much everybody, and its historical status was only secured when the Pistols would implode following a disastrous U.S. tour in ’78. In the years since, it’s become a touchstone of punk, not to mention a lesson to any band that dares to fly too close to the sun. Hope you’re paying attention, Dallas Braden. The Knack, “My Sharona” Released as a single from the band’s Get the Knack debut, “Sharona” quickly surged to the top of the Billboard charts, where it would remain for six weeks (and be named the #1 song on the publication’s year-end pop chart). The song’s iconic guitar line (dunna-nunna-nuh-nuh!) has since become a thing of rock lore, the soundtrack to a million bar mitzvahs and just as many stadium rally chants, and though the Knack could never replicate its success, for one brief, shining moment, they were perfect. The Sugarhill Gang, “Rapper’s Delight” It’s the song that brought hip-hop out of the rec rooms and into the masses, crossing over to both the pop and R&B charts when it was released in 1979. Chances are, in the years since, you’ve heard its iconic bass line (sampled from Chic’s “Good Times”) and can probably recite its lyrics verbatim (“I said a hip hop, a hippie, a hippie to the hip hip hop … “). Not too bad for three dudes from Englewood, New Jersey. Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock, “It Takes Two” One of the most sampled (and revered) hip-hop tracks of the pre-breakout era (like 1988), merely reading the “It Takes Two” title is probably enough to conjure up the sound of the wailing diva belting out the hook (or those “Woo- Yeah s”). It swept the streets and crossed over to the clubs, and has since become a staple at weddings and dance parties — and no, the dynamic duo could never match its success. But they don’t have to; they’re in the perfecto club. Young MC, “Bust a Move” The biggest hit from Young’s breakout Stone Cold Rhymin’ album, it not only won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance, but made the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 and paved the way for the rap takeover that would follow in the ’90s. Oh, and Flea plays bass on it. One of the greatest hip-hop tracks of all time and probably one of the first ones you ever saw a video for on MTV. Don’t just stand there, bust a move! Alanis Morrissette, Jagged Little Pill Buoyed by the Dave Coulier-baiting “You Oughta Know” (or any of the five smash singles that followed), Morrissette’s debut sold a staggering 33 million copies worldwide and basically brought the roiling, riot-grrl spirit to the mainstream. Not surprisingly, Morrissette never again reached the heights she did here, but if you’re making a list of albums that unquestionably defined the 1990s, well, this had better be on it. Craig Mack, “Flava in Ya Ear” The song that basically put Bad Boy on the map, it featured a cameo by a then up-and-coming Notorious B.I.G., not to mention Puff Daddy. It’s stark, black-and-white video is equally iconic, though the song is perhaps best known for the fact that Mack all but disappeared following its release. Still, “Flava” is so of a time and a moment in hip hop that it’s subsequently earned classic status, meaning that somewhere, Mack can rest easy. The Verve, “Bittersweet Symphony” Breakout, genre-defining smash from Brit-rock lifers the Verve, “Bittersweet” — and its accompanying music video — were smashes on both sides of the pond. Too bad the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards and Mick Jagger caught wind of it and sued the band for royalties, effectively ending their run just as it was beginning. But legality aside, you cannot deny the song’s thrilling, chilling rush, which, 15 years after it debuted, still raises goose bumps — kind of like watching a perfect game, really. Neutral Milk Hotel, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea When it was first released in 1998, its sparse production and spine-tingling emoting confused many — though, in the decade since, it’s become a touchstone of American indie, a harrowing, haunting rumination on life, death and reincarnation (and Anne Frank) that mastermind Jeff Mangum has yet to follow up. And who knows if he ever will; pitching a second perfecto has proven impossible to date. The Postal Service, Give Up One of the most unlikely success stories in recent memory, it started as a project between Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard and electronic musician Jimmy Tamborello, and thanks to gently bubbling hits like “Such Great Heights,” it went on to become the best-selling album released on Sub Pop since Bleach, the debut from some band called Nirvana. Since then, neither man seems willing to embrace the idea of recording a follow-up, and really, why would they? Perfection usually only comes around once. Cee Lo Green, “F— You” A song so huge it not only managed to make Green into a solo star, but helped launch the career of Bruno Mars too. It went from Internet sensation to the Billboard Hot 100 and has since become Green’s signature song — which, given his time in the Goodie Mob and Gnarls Barkley, is certainly saying something. He’ll probably never be this perfect again, but you can never take this smash away from him. What are you musical perfect games in your book? Let us know in the comments!
