Steve Jobs Dead At 56

Apple co-founder was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2004. By Katie Byrne Steve Jobs Photo: Getty Images Apple announced Wednesday (October 5) that co-founder Steve Jobs had died at age 56. “Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being,” read a statement posted on Apple.com . “Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.” Jobs, who stepped down as Apple’s CEO in August, announced to his employees in 2004 that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. While he appeared to have successfully removed the cancerous tumor that same year, his health continued to deteriorate over the years and he took a medical leave of absence in January. President Obama, Nicki Minaj, Bill Gates and more remember Steve Jobs. When announcing his resignation, Jobs wrote in a statement to Apple’s board of directors, “I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s C.E.O., I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.” Jobs founded Apple with Steve Wozniak in 1976 before being fired from his own company in 1985. He later admitted that this seeming low point in his life was necessary for his evolution as a businessman and a person. “The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything,” he told Stanford graduates during a commencement speech in 2005. “It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.” His next move was purchasing the Graphics Group in 1986 — a little company that would later be renamed Pixar. After teaming up with Disney, the first film produced under the partnership was “Toy Story” in 1995, forever changing the path of big-screen animation. Remember Steve Jobs’ many innovations by flipping through this photo gallery. Following that success, Jobs made a triumphant return in 1996 to the company he helped found when Apple bought his NeXT Computer company, and he became interim chief executive the next year. Apple’s profile was boosted significantly with the introduction of the iMac in 1998, and the hits kept coming for Jobs and Apple. The first iPod came in 2001, followed by the iTunes Store in 2003 — which just last year sold its 10 billionth song . The iPhone was next in 2007, and Apple revolutionized electronics once more with the release of the iPad last year. Steve Jobs almost singlehandedly brought the music industry into the future — here’s how. During that 2005 Stanford commencement speech, Jobs summed up his personal path to success and his impact on technology. “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future,” he told the graduating class. “You have to trust in something: your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.” Steve Jobs changed the world, but how did he change you ? Tell Us on Facebook.

Young Jeezy Sample ‘Cool,’ Above & Beyond Say

‘A lot of people have been assuming that Jeezy’s been ripping us off,’ says A&B’s Tony McGuinness of ‘F.A.M.E.’ By Akshay Bhansali Young Jeezy Photo: Prince Williams/Getty Images Recently, Atlanta MC Young Jeezy put out his much-awaited Thug Motivation 103 album’s latest single, “F.A.M.E. (Fake Ass Muthaf—as Envy),” featuring closing bars by a back-in-the-game T.I. , online, and since then, the song has been viewed more than 160,000 times and has been heavily commented on. Ironically, the song, in which Jeezy and T.I. both call out hateration and envy, has been met with a smidge of criticism, though judging by the type of folks leaving the comments , it should come as no surprise. In fact, the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League-produced song is based around a 2005 trance-music classic, Above & Beyond vs. Andy Moor’s “Air for Life,” which features vocals by Carrie Skipper. In the comments section of the song online, trance-music purists both lament the hip-hop reworking of “Air” but also suggest the sample was used without permission, something Above & Beyond’s Tony McGuinness (the Above & Beyond trio also includes Jono Grant & Paavo Siljam

Willow Smith, Nicki Minaj Ignite ‘Fireball’

Young ‘Whip My Hair’ singer’s new single premieres on Hot 97. By James Dinh Willow Smith Photo: Vittorio Zunino Celotto/ Getty Images It’s been over a year since Willow Smith ‘s “Whip My Hair” takeover, and since then, the 10-year-old rising pop darling has released follow-up single “21st Century Girl” and has been steadily working on her Roc Nation debut album. On Wednesday (October 5), Smith dropped a Nicki Minaj-assisted party single, “Fireball,” to appease her growing fanbase. Offering world-premiere duties to New York Hot 97 DJ Angie Martinez’s afternoon radio show, “Fireball” is a drum-heavy party tune, where the young starlet gets feisty, shows her swagger and proclaims herself the center of attention. “See, I never been the one to toot my own horn/ Beep beep, now watch me put it on/ I set fire everywhere I play/ Make them all go insane, L.A. to U.K.,” Smith sings with confidence. She keeps the energy going by delivering a simple hook when she repeatedly boasts, “I’m the fireball of the party/ I’m the fire” atop a layer of chants. Minaj chimes in about two minutes into the song, sharing bragging rights with Smith, offering her usual rapping eccentrics and even name-dropping the singer’s famous parents. “Put you under my wing, I’m the top boss/ Ain’t from Louisiana, but I’m hot sauce/ Cop the mountain, just to go and build a house off so I ain’t never got to worry what the house cost,” the MC spits. Artwork for the song, which has been posted on the singer’s Facebook page, depicts the singer’s signature nameplate inside an orange-lit fireball. On Monday, Smith teased fans about the single’s debut via Twitter , writing, “My new single is coming soon, really soon, like maybe tomorrow soon:) #FIREBALL:)” MTV News recently chatted with “Whip My Hair” producer Ronald “Jukebox” Jackson , who revealed that the pop starlet is close to finishing her full-length debut album. “I did like eight, nine songs on Willow, so right now, we’re in the process of just trying to close out the album,” he said. “It’s just the whole process. You got to think about it: She’s a 10-year-old girl. She’s gotta have a life; she’s gotta be a kid.” Share your review of “Fireball” in the comments below! Related Artists Willow Smith Nicki Minaj

Katy Perry ‘Freshening Up’ Unreleased Songs

Producer Tricky Stewart reveals that singer is in studio working on leftovers from their Teenage Dream sessions. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Vanessa White Wolf Katy Perry Photo: Steve Granitz/ WireImage She may still be releasing tracks off Teenage Dream thanks to her latest single, “The One That Got Away,” but Katy Perry is already hard at work on some other super-special, top-secret musical project. Producer Tricky Stewart, who worked with Perry on three Teenage Dream songs, is back at work with the California Gurl herself, prepping some music with the singer. “Katy and I went into [the studio] just to address some issues with records that we had done in the past that didn’t end up going on Teenage Dream, ” he told MTV News. “So we are in the process of just listening and freshening up things and getting ready for something special she has going on.” What is it that she is readying? Well, Stewart doesn’t exactly know, or maybe he just doesn’t want to say. “I don’t know what it is, but I know she has something going on because she wants to be in the studio,” he said. “So that’s good. … I can tell you that Katy likes the studio again; that’s always a good thing.” While he couldn’t shed much light on the project itself, he did reveal the name of the song. “This song is really special. It’s called ‘Dressing Up,’ so it’s going to be a big record, I think,” he said. “It definitely fits. It’s right there in what her sensibilities are as a musician and a songwriter. She doesn’t change much. She has a very keen musical taste. It’ll be really good.” The music they are working on is using some leftovers from their Teenage Dream sessions. And they hope to finally put that magic out into the world. “We always knew that the records we created were special [and] at the time it was more contractual obligation [that they didn’t make the record],” he explained, noting all the success the singer has experienced with the record, which includes five #1 songs . “I can only have so many songs produced by me on the record. She didn’t need to have extra songs at the same time.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Katy Perry

Lady Gaga, Tony Bennett ‘Tramp’ It Up In New Video

Classy clip, featuring a blue-haired Gaga, hit the Web on Monday. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: FilmMagic Of the current crop of pop superstars, perhaps none is better suited to take on “The Lady Is a Tramp” than Lady Gaga — and we definitely don’t mean that in a bad way. After all, the song — first performed on Broadway in the1937 musical “Babes in Arms,” a production better known for the standards it featured, like “Tramp” and “My Funny Valentine,” than it’s rather brief run on the Great White Way — has been covered by the likes of Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald and Shirley Bassey over the years, and requires a certain quality that only those stars possessed: a brassy, beguiling bite, one that comes across both in their voices and the way they carry themselves away from the stage. In short, they have to be able to embody the titular Tramp. And now, Gaga got her shot, in an updated version of the song that appears on Tony Bennett’s chart-topping Duets II album . A video for the song premiered online Monday (October 3), and, yes, Gaga plays the role to perfection, vamping and camping alongside Bennett, blue hair bobbing along to the beat. In a floor-length black-lace dress, she belts out the chorus, flits and flirts through lines like “I love the free, fresh wind in my hair” and “I’m so broke” (and even professes her love for the Yankees, which probably explains her behavior at Citi Field last season ) does the prerequisite pouting and even scats a bit. Bennett seems to love every minute of it, trading vocal couplets, laughing when Gaga steals his handkerchief and taking her on a slow dance at song’s end. And thanks to the backing of a roaring big band, this new version of “Tramp” is not only a welcome addition to the lengthy list of cover versions, but, in some way, it takes the song into new territory too. A lot of that is thanks to Gaga, who gives her all and really, truly becomes the Tramp. What did you think of Gaga and Tony’s video? Let us know in the comments! Christina Aguilera Calls ‘Moves Like Jagger’ ‘So Unique’

‘The first time I heard the song, I loved it,’ she tells MTV News of Maroon 5 track, which has spent four weeks at #1. By James Montgomery Christina Aguilera Photo: NBC.com Back in July, on the set of the “Moves Like Jagger” video , Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine made a compelling argument for the song to be crowned the Song of Summer, stating, rather matter-of-factly, “There’s not even any other songs being released this summer.” Turns out he was wrong. Not only were there other songs released during summer 2011 (we checked), but, as it turns out, “Jagger” may end up being the Song of Fall too. For the fourth week, the song — which also features Christina Aguilera — sits atop the Billboard Hot 100, besting the likes of Adele, Lady Gaga and Eminem. And it shows no signs of vacating the #1 spot anytime soon. Maroon 5 even released a rap remix with up and coming MC Mac Miller online earlier today. And while the success of “Jagger” is certainly impressive, it’s equally amazing to learn that it’s the first chart-topper for Aguilera in 10 years (her last being 2001’s “Lady Marmalade”). So understandably, Aguilera is thrilled. Then again, as she told MTV News in a statement Thursday (September 29), she knew “Jagger” was destined for greatness from the moment it was first played for her. “The first time I heard the song, I loved it,” she said. “The song has elements from the ’60s and ’70s, yet is so current and unique.” Aguilera shows up in the Jonas

Lady Gaga, Tony Bennett Music Video Debuts Monday

‘Lady Is a Tramp’ clip is the second from Duets II, following ‘Body and Soul’ with the late Amy Winehouse. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Getty Images Tony Bennett just scored his first #1 album with Duets II, and now the legend is ready to drop another video from the collabo project. On Monday, his video for “The Lady Is a Tramp” — with a blue-haired Lady Gaga by his side — will hit the Web. On the track, Gaga gets a little feisty with the 85-year-old. “I hate California, it’s crowded and damp,” the New York-native Gaga sings, before Bennett chimes in giggling, “That’s why the lady is a tramp.” “My favorite is that Lady Gaga,” Bennett gushed to MTV News at the Video Music Awards, where Gaga spent the night in character as her male alter ego, Jo Calderone . “She’s the biggest. I’ll tell you, I never met anyone with more talent than that lady.” Earlier this month, Bennett’s “Body and Soul” video with the late Amy Winehouse debuted. The duo were filmed recording the song together, and the Gaga video will most likely follow suit. Other Duets II collaborations include John Mayer, Carrie Underwood and Mariah Carey, among others. Riding high on his new wave of success — including first-week sales of 179,000 copies — Bennett said his career has always been incredibly cyclical. “I’m 85; I just want to tell you, it’s a very strange situation,” he said. “I always worked live, and ever since 1950, wherever I’ve played internationally I’ve been sold out all these years. It’s amazing. So the public’s been on my side all the time.” What are you expecting from Gaga and Bennett’s video? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Lady Gaga Tony Bennett

Chris Brown Set To Go ‘Undercover’ With J. Cole

‘I think the ladies gonna like this one,’ DJ Drama teases MTV News about collabo from his October album. By Rob Markman Chris Brown Photo: Getty Images J. Cole is riding high this week after the release of his debut, Cole World: The Sideline Story. Aside from the inevitable euphoria that comes with dropping one’s first album, relative newcomer Cole also got a chance to work with Jay-Z, Missy Elliott and Trey Songz on the project. But fans shouldn’t expect the high-profile collaborations to stop there thanks to DJ Drama . On October 11, the Atlanta DJ will drop his latest album, Third Power, on which he paired Cole with Chris Brown for a track titled “Undercover.” “We were searching for tracks for Chris,” Drama explained to MTV News about how he and producer V12 the Hitman came up with the song. “We got something, Chris went in. I thought about it for a minute: Who hasn’t he worked with, who hasn’t he been on a record with?” That meant excluding heavy hitters like Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes, Kanye West and Swizz Beatz, who are among CB’s army of previous collaborators. Drama eventually thought to link Brown with Roc Nation’s rookie rapper Cole, and although the pair appeared together on little-known British rapper Chipmunk’s “Champion (Remix),” Drama’s “Undercover” will mark the first time Cole and Breezy co-headline a song. “J. Cole has definitely been doing his thing,” Drama added. “That’s another guy that I have a lot of respect for and am excited for what he’s been accomplishing, so we made that allegiance right there; plus, you got some bars from Breezy.” Brown already has a dedicated female fanbase and Cole — thanks to songs like his R&B-tinged “Can’t Get Enough” and a feature on Miguel’s hit “All I Want Is You” — is becoming a heartthrob himself. Whatever the case, Drama is pretty sure the song will win women over. “I think the ladies gonna like this one,” he said. Are you excited to hear a Chris Brown/ J. Cole collabo?
