Dave Franco Talks ‘Fright Night,’ Working With Big Bro James Franco

As one of MTV News’ 11 for ’11, up-and-comer also plans to shop around a Web series about college life. By Kara Warner Dave Franco Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images If you are not already familiar with the name Dave Franco, chances are you will be soon. You might recognize the enterprising 25-year-old from his work on “Greek,” “Privileged” and “Scrubs.” He’s also appeared in several videos on FunnyOrDie.com, including a series called “Acting With James Franco” (James Franco is Dave’s brother). But these are all things from the past. Looking ahead to what’s in store for Franco in 2011, we’ll see him on screens big and small, in front of and behind the camera. When MTV News caught up with the up-and-comer recently, one of our 11 for ’11, we chatted about “Fright Night,” a TV series he’d like to get off the ground and whether we’ll see him at the Oscars in a skit alongside his big bro . MTV : We’ve talked about “Fright Night” before, and even though you’re sworn to secrecy about plot details, have you seen any of the film yet? Dave Franco : I have not seen anything, but I’ve only heard good things so far. I may have mentioned this before, but despite being a vampire movie, it’s very grounded and realistic. If I had to compare it to another vampire movie, I would say “Let the Right One In,” where everything is treated with realism but the only difference is that “Fright Night” happens to be hilarious too, mainly due to really funny actors like David Tennant and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Colin Farrell is hilarious also. MTV : You’ve also mentioned that you’ve been working on your own material. What can you tell us about that? Franco : This past semester, I was working more behind the camera, and I directed, produced and wrote this Web series about college life. The basic idea stems from a conversation I had with my friend about how there are really only a handful of projects at most, whether it be film or TV, that really capture what college is like. For the most part, it’s all sensationalized and over-the-top. We decided we wanted to give a very HBO-type look at what really happens in college. We figured, ‘It’s crazy enough as it is; let’s just show what’s really going on.’ So we followed a handful of kids at USC throughout the semester, and the whole tone is a little strange, because it’s part documentary, part reality, part scripted. It’s kind of a weird mesh of everything, but it came out really cool. I hope people respond well to it. I’m happy, because we were able to capture what we set out for. … I went to USC, and watching this footage, I can attest that this is really what it’s like. This is what happens on a typical night. MTV : Sounds intriguing. Where do you want it to end up? Franco : We still need to figure that out. It’s all edited and everything is ready to go. We just have to figure out how we want to present it and where. We’ve always wanted to get this on TV, ideally an HBO, Showtime or FX. We’re almost using this Web series as a pitching tool that will hopefully generate some interest, and then we can go from there. MTV : What else are you working on? Franco : We’re filming a couple of Funny or Die videos later this month. There’s also a feature film that I’m writing for my brother and I to star in, where we play versions of ourselves named Davie and James. Without giving away too much, it all takes place around Thanksgiving and Christmas break around our hometown of Palo Alto [California]. Our real family will be in it, my real friends from home will be in it, and the vibe of it is going to be an extended version of our Funny or Die videos. It’s going to be difficult for me, because it’s now a 90-minute version of him giving me sh– and making fun of me. MTV : Don’t let him do that! Franco : [ Laughs. ] I’ll give it back, trust me, but it takes its toll. It wears on you. MTV : Any chance we’ll see you in something for the Oscars, since you have a pretty good connection to the host? Franco : There’s been talks of us doing a digital short for that. We’ll see, though. Potentially another installment in the “Acting With James Franco.” We’ll see. Check out MTV News’ 11 for ’11 — actors, musicians and TV stars who are about to have a huge year — all week long. Taylor Swift’s ‘Back To December’ Video Extends Her Apology

Though she hasn’t said who the song is about, Swift did admit to being ‘careless’ in the relationship. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift in the “Back to December” music video Photo: Big Machine Records Long before Taylor Swift released the video for “Back to December,” everyone was clamoring for clues about who she was singing to in the breakup ballad. And still, the dark-haired character in the video could represent any one of her recent exes. Swift has always made it clear that though she sings about her life, she never names names, but she did talk to MTV News about writing an apology song, which she explained was a first for her. “I’ve never felt the need to apologize in a song before, but in the last two years I’ve experienced a lot, [including] a lot of different kinds of learning lessons,” Taylor told us last year, just before the release of Speak Now. “And sometimes you learn a lesson too late and at that point you need to apologize because you were careless.” In the chorus, she sings, “So this is me swallowing my pride/ Standing in front of you saying I’m sorry for that night And I’d go back to December all the time/ It turns out freedom ain’t nothing but missing you/ Wishing that I’d realized what I had when you were mine.” Many have guessed that the tune is about her breakup with “Twilight” star Taylor Lautner. Whoever it is, Swift felt her former paramour deserved a musical mea culpa. “Well, I’ve always sort of written songs about situations in life, things that needed to be said,” she told E! back in October. “I write songs about people who deserve to have songs written about them, and whatever they need to hear, whatever is the right thing to say to that person, ends up being said.” While Swift may have been careless toward the guy she’s writing about on the song, she’s admitted he was nothing but a gentleman. “This is about a person who was incredible to me, just perfect to me in a relationship,” she said. “And I was really careless with him.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Taylor Swift Related Photos Taylor Swift’s Dating History Related Artists Taylor Swift

Among Britney Spears Singles, Where Does ‘Hold It Against Me’ Rank?

‘It’s going to stick, but it doesn’t have that little pixie dust that makes a really magical Britney song,’ one expert says. By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by Christina Garibaldi Britney Spears in “Toxic” Photo: Jive Britney Spears got grimy on her newest single, “Hold It Against Me,” a Dr. Luke/ Max Martin-produced thrashing club tune about lusting on the dance floor. It serves as the lead single from Brit’s March album , and it follows in the tradition of other Brit lead singles like ” … Baby One More Time,” “Oops! … I Did It Again” and “Womanizer,” which had Britney-philes (and even some Britney haters) on the dance floor. But how does the track stack up against previous Britney singles? MTV News caught up with some Spears scholars to get their thoughts. “I would probably [rank this] less on the ‘Oops!’/’Toxic’ level and more on the ‘Womanizer’ [level], where it’s that thing where it’s a really repetitive chorus that you could fit on a fortune cookie,” Entertainment Weekly music critic Leah Greenblatt told MTV News. “Two weeks later, you’re, like, dreaming that song and singing it in the shower and hating yourself for singing it through your commute, so I think it’s kind of insidious and it’s going to stick, but it doesn’t have that little pixie dust that makes a really magical Britney song.” Perez Hilton seemed to feel similarly about the song, admitting that he likes the direction this track takes compared to the work she’s put out on her last few records. “I think ‘Hold It Against Me’ is definitely better than a lot of things she’s done in the past, but not quite as good as ‘Toxic.’ I like ‘Hold It Against Me’ better than ‘Womanizer,’ but not as much as ‘Circus.’ “I don’t think is revolutionary,” he continued. “It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s a fun track. It’s a great setup single to remind everybody ‘Britney’s back.’ This is Britney’s ‘pay attention to me’ track.” MTV News’ very own Jim Cantiello said the song certainly isn’t ” … Baby One More Time,” but it’s also not “3,” and that’s good with him. “Do I think it’s better than ‘Womanizer’ and ‘3’? Hell yes! … To me, it sounds very much like Britney,” he explained. “Her voice is back, but it still has that dirty, filthy dance sound that I loved on Blackout. ” But what do you think of “Hold It Against Me”? By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears Photo: Eric Charbonneau/Le Studio/Wireimage We’re sure there are people in the world who don’t like the new Britney Spears song, “Hold It Against Me,” but judging by the comments on several articles MTV News has posted about the track on Monday, most fans are enthralled with Spears’ latest opus about love on the dance floor. “Britney, you are amazing as always. I’m glad that you are back,” commenter Juliana Alves shared. “Loved the new song.” “She is definitely back! Her single is hot!” Ry commented. “The beat is sick! U rock, Brit!” Rus7 pointed out that at first he didn’t love “Hold It Against Me,” but then it grew on him. “The first seconds I listened to the song, I was kinda disappointed ’cause it was the same as the demo, but then the second and the third chorus, including the break, just made me change my idea. I love the final beats!” he wrote. “This song is just to be in the club. … Haha, definitely 5 stars!” Weighing in on the epic Gaga vs. Britney battle of 2011 , Adham noted that this song definitely is a tune to give Gaga a run for her money. “Omgg you guys are right, even though I still don’t think it’s good enough to beat Gaga, but wowwwwwwww!!! It’s definitely competition 😛 I LOVE IT!!” LOX added, “Queen Britney! It’s just the beat, her sexy and catchy voice. … No one is like Britney. Maybe Gaga is more talented, but I’m sorry like every country … music only has one queen: BRITNEY!! You’re back, and it’s Britney B*tch!!” Ccrazy4brit
