The Shins Cover Squeeze On Levi’s Pioneer Recording Sessions

Portland band pays homage to British new-wave act as part of denim company’s revival series. By Matt Harper James Mercer Photo: MTV News The Shins may have taken a break while frontman James Mercer works on Broken Bells, his side project with Danger Mouse , but fans can get their fix of the indie Portland band’s melodic rock, thanks to Levi’s Pioneer Sessions, which brought them back together for its 2010 Revival Recordings Program. “This will be the first Shins release in a while,” Mercer said in a video interview for Levi’s. The denim company courted a dozen musical acts and asked them to re-create the songs that helped inspire their own careers. Nas kicked off the series with his cover of the Slick Rick classic “Hey Young World,” and Levi’s has already posted covers by She & Him, Bomba Estereo and Dirty Projectors. The Shins re-crafted “Goodbye Girl,” by British new-wave group Squeeze, who had a string of U.K. hits, including “Up the Junction,” “Tempted” and “Hourglass.” Hard-core Shins fans may know that Mercer spent his high school years living in England, where he was exposed to Squeeze’s music. When Mercer moved back with his family to the States, he recalled being glad to see that Squeeze were enjoying some attention on this side of the pond. “I remember ‘Cool for Cats,’ that was a song that was on MTV three times a day,” Mercer told MTV News from his recording studio. And while Mercer’s earliest memories of the band coincide with his formative years in England, his ongoing fascination with Squeeze had more to do with their penchant for changing their sound, always growing sonically. ” ‘Tempted’ was a major hit for them, and it’s incredible progress [from ‘Cool for Cats’] and it’s only in the course of two years,” Mercer said. “This song just really grabbed me,” Mercer went on to explain of why they chose the 1978 track “Goodbye Girl.” “All the things that grab you about any good song: the melody and the chords and the way that they interact, and the rhythm of the song.” You can check out the song for yourself. The Shins’ cover of Squeeze’s “Goodbye Girl” is available for free download at the Levi’s Pioneer Sessions website. What do you think of the Shins’ Squeeze cover? Let us know in the comments below!

Nicki Minaj Talks Possible 50 Cent Collabo

Young Money diva breaks down the possibility of working with her fellow Queens natives. By Mawuse Ziegbe Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News Nicki Minaj is steadily building a rep as one of hip-hop’s most unpredictable artists with her ever-changing Day-Glo hair colors and collaborations with everyone from Robin Thicke to Mariah Carey to Ludacris . With the buzz about the “Massive Attack” MC’s upcoming debut album heating up, fans are on the lookout for who the Young Money Barbie may work with next. As one of the biggest stars to come out of Queens in recent years, a collabo with Southside titan 50 Cent might be a logical step. However, Minaj said that despite sharing a hometown, she and Fif haven’t come across each other yet. “Our paths never crossed, and it’s weird,” Minaj told DJ Envy in a recent episode of MTV2’s “Sucker Free.” “I did meet [Lloyd] Banks, like, once or twice before.” Even if Minaj is planning a major Queens anthem with 50 Cent, she’s keeping the details under wraps. “If there is a big surprise, I’m not gonna tell you, Envy,” Minaj teased. “I know everybody will know by the time I say it. You gonna tweet it and stuff. It’s gonna be on the radio. I mean, why would I tell you that?” If a Minaj/50 collabo did go down, the rising star would have something else in common with fellow femcee Lil’ Kim, who has been taking shots at the Young Money diva. Kim and Fif worked together on the raunchy hit “Magic Stick” from Kim’s 2003 album, La Bella Mafia. It would also be an interesting matchup since 50 has been going at Minaj collaborator and rumored manager Diddy in recent interviews, saying the Bad Boy mogul’s music “sucks right now.” Do you want to see and Nicki and Fiddy duet? Lady Gaga’s ‘Alejandro’ Video Fashions From Eva Peron To Steampunk

New video features S&M outfits, a latex nun’s habit and other controversial high fashion. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga in “Alejandro” Photo: Interscope Records In every performance she gives, Lady Gaga pays as much attention to her look as to her sound. She knows that her “little monsters” will examine each of her looks and try to re-create them. And in her new video for “Alejandro,” which debuted online on Tuesday (June 8), Gaga’s video style is very dark, very black-and-white and very German. And while the song’s Spanish, sun-soaked vibe could lend itself to cheery styles, instead Gaga took a turn for the dark. Most of the looks she wears in the clip, directed by fashion photographer Steven Klein, are more reminiscent of ones that may have been popular in Germany during the ’20s and ’30s. The looks of the video range from high fashion to high blasphemy, as Gaga takes on Catholic imagery. She not only sports a red latex nun’s habit, she also wears a hooded white-and-red tunic that feels like something that Joan of Arc would wear at the stake. Gaga does pay homage to the song’s Latin vibe in the opening funeral scene, when she wears a black lace veil reminiscent of an Eva Peron outfit — or something Madonna would have worn as Eva Peron in “Evita.” That is certainly not where the Madonna style references begin or end. At one point, when the video takes a turn for the “Vogue,” Gaga is seen alone dancing around in a black pant suit that could have easily been worn by Madge in 1990 (back when Madonna was channeling German movie icon Marlene Dietrich). Gaga even has her own take on Madonna’s infamous Gaultier cone bra, only Gaga has made it her own by replacing the cones with rifles. Then again, there are fashion references that are now becoming distinctly Gaga. She dances around in nude-colored underwear. She wears a black Victorian style dress, complete with steampunk goggles, a look that would have been at home in her “Paparazzi” video. Rocker Gaga, complete with black underwear, leather jacket, sunglasses and slicked-back hair, also makes a cameo. It feels like the woman we saw asking Beyonc
