112 To Reunite Onstage ‘For The Fans’

Slim from 112 talks to MTV News about the group’s upcoming reunion album, but tells fans not to expect a comeback album. By Rob Markman 112 Photo: At their height, 112 represented the very best of R&B music. With their 1996 self-titled debut, Slim, Q, Mike and Daron thrilled lovelorn listeners with a healthy mix of ballads and dance numbers. Over the course of nine years and five albums, fans swooned over 112 with hits like “Only You,” “It’s Over Now” and “Peaches & Cream.” Like all good things, 112 eventually came to an end, but on Saturday, the quartet will reunite onstage for their For the Fans Tour. “While I was doing my thing, I’ve been going all over the place, all over the world, and everybody keeps on asking about 112,” Slim told MTV News on Wednesday (June 20) over the phone. “The fans wanted to see not two people, not three people, but everybody. When everything added up, everything was all good.” It is all good, but Slim, who has gone on to enjoy solo success outside the group, didn’t want to label this new tour an official reunion. “I wouldn’t even say it’s a reunion thing. I think of it as more of a For the Fans Tour,” he explained. “When I think of reunion, reunion means new material, going back into the studio and recording and stuff like that. … I don’t want to disappoint any fans, but that’s not what we talked about. Right now, we’re addressing getting on the stage together and actually singing.” These days, Slim is concentrating on his sophomore project, Cruise Control, and this tour; he didn’t want to dwell on past drama. Instead, he said the group’s breakup was due to growing pains. “When you start growing up, you start growing apart, and everybody starts having their own individual outlooks on music,” he said. “I think everybody had their own individual approach of who they wanted to be in music.” Regardless, the silky-voice singer promises a quality performance. “It’s going to be really fun for all the fans who want to come out and see Q, Mike, Slim and Daron on the same stage at one time, and we’re definitely going to give one heck of a show,” he assured. “It is fun to sing the songs with the guys. It is fun to actually get in practice and actually do the steps and see everything that we worked hard for when we first started off and set off before everything.” 112’s For the Fans Tour dates:

MTV News recently caught up with the still-humble champ to talk about prepping the big summer tour, as well as his recovery from the recent surgery he underwent to remove a number of large kidney stones . “I’m feeling good,” he assured MTV News. Phillips recently told The Associated Press that he’s “getting better each day, so that’s a good thing. I’m just walking around, getting my strength back together. It was tough, you know, those first few days, but I’m getting to where I can pick the guitar back up and write a little bit.” Speaking about the buzz surrounding the “Idol” tour, the 21-year-old seemed to still be wrapping his head around the extent of the production. “I’m real excited. It’s all of our first time being on a real tour, and it’s going to be a big learning experience. We’re all really excited about it,” Phillips said. “It’s a lot of jamming-out music, and that’s what I do. Hopefully people are feeling the music when I’m feeling it, so it’s going to be fun.” And what about the work on his highly anticipated debut album? “I’m just starting [to work on it], so I’m excited,” Phillips said. “I’ve been writing. I have other songs written, and I’m excited to get it out there.” In addition to his recovery, the “Idol” tour and work on his solo album, Phillips will also be performing at the Fourth of July celebration at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., alongside country singer Josh Turner, “Smash” star Megan Hilty, actor Matthew Broderick and famed composer John Williams. Katy Perry Covers The Hollywood Reporter

A day after the release of her Alice in Wonderland -esque “Wide Awake” music video , Katy Perry graces the cover of the latest issue of The Hollywood Reporter. The 27-year-old looks gorgeous on the cover: The article promises Confessions of a Pop Princess, and among them is the fact that Katy, like everyone else, struggles to keep it together sometimes: “There were times when what was going on in my personal life was so overwhelming that I had to bend over to let those tears fall straight out of my eyes and not my false eyelashes just as I’m about to go up on that ramp and sing ‘Teenage Dream.’” On whether Russell Brand inspires her music, she says, “When I write my songs, honesty has always worked for me. So if it ain’t broke, why f—ing fix it? … Nobody knows what happened [in the breakup] except the two people who are in it.” Katy also revealed plans to start her own label: “When it does come to fruition, I’m going to try and avoid the things that take away any fighting chance for an artist to have financial success.”

‘Rock Of Ages’: Behind The Star-Studded Cameos

Director Adam Shankman explains how ’80s icons like Sebastian Bach and Debbie Gibson ended up in the movie musical. By Amy Wilkinson Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta in “Rock of Ages” Photo: The ’80s are alive and well in director Adam Shankman’s movie musical ” Rock of Ages ,” which shimmied into theaters Friday (June 15). Based on the hit Broadway production of the same name, the flick follows would-be musician Drew Boley (Diego Boneta) as he falls for new-in-town Sherrie Christian (Julianne Hough) and lands his big break opening for rock legend Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise) at the famed Bourbon Room. The soundtrack is stuffed with the era’s biggest hits like “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” and “I Want to Know What Love Is,” but the toe-tapping tunes aren’t the only throwbacks to the decade of decadence. Pay close attention and you’ll spot a number of ’80s music mavens. A major plotline in the film centers around conservative advocate Patricia Whitmore’s (Catherine Zeta-Jones) attempt to shutter the Bourbon Room and reclaim the Sunset Strip for more wholesome pursuits. The struggle reaches its climax in a rocking protest outside the club with Patricia and company facing off against club employee Lonny (Russell Brand) while singing a mash-up of “We Built This City” and “We’re Not Gonna Take It.” It’s here among the assembled masses that you’ll recognize a few familiar faces, like Skid Row’s Sebastian Bach and Debbie Gibson. But how did the cameos come to be? “I had said if anyone from the period wants to participate, there is a scene I’m happy to accommodate, ’cause it just felt right. … So the studio just kind of put out the word, and that’s what happened,” Shankman said. “I would get the phone call the day before going, ‘This is who’s coming tomorrow,’ and I’m like, ‘Seriously?!’ ” Having a bevy of rock stars on a single set might sound like a nightmare of warring egos and AquaNet, but in fact, Shankman said the stars sang for their supper, staging an impromptu concert. “The greatest part of having those guys — [REO Speedwagon’s] Kevin Cronin, [Extreme’s] Nuno Bettencourt and Sebastian — all of them, our lunch that night was at 3:30 in the morning, and during lunch for the whole crew, they did a whole concert, and they sang all the songs.” Now that’s a scene we want to see on the DVD bonus reel! Lady Gaga’s Fame Perfume Smells Like ‘Tears Of Belladonna’

‘My perfume was designed for women, but a lot of my gay friends wear it,’ she wrote after photo of perfume’s bottle leaked online. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: A photo of the bottle for Lady Gaga ‘s first-ever fragrance, Fame, leaked on Wednesday, but rather than lash out at excited fashion editors and bloggers for putting the design out there ahead of schedule, Mother Monster took to her Twitter to open up a bit about the perfume. “Looks like photos of my perfume are being leaked. Oh you fashion editors I could just crinkle my hands at you!” she wrote, before posting her own photo of the bottle. The container is deep purple/black with a gold, spiked top. (How very Mother Monster!) The front of the box indicates that it is a “black fluid.” Gaga then tweeted the back of the box, which describes what all her Little Monsters will smell like when they wear it. The description explains that the fragrance has notes of “tears of belladonna, crushed heart of tiger orchidea with a black veil of incense, pulverized apricot and the combinative essences of saffron and honey drops.” Here’s what it smells like! twitter.com/ladygaga/statu… — Lady Gaga (@ladygaga) June 13, 2012 When asked by a fan on Twitter if Fame will be followed by a men’s cologne, Gaga replied, “My perfume was designed for women, but a lot of my gay friends wear it.” Fame has long been in the works. Gaga originally signed a fragrance deal with Coty Inc. in September 2010, and rumor had it that it would be called Monster . Stephen Mormoris, senior vice president of global marketing in the Coty Beauty division, said at the time that they wanted to work with Gaga because she is a “phenomenon” and “a fascinating cultural force” and he hoped her mass appeal would “electrify” the market on behalf of his company. In early 2011, months after the deal was announced , Gaga had a very colorful description for the perfume, noting that it would smell “like an expensive hooker.” “[Blood and semen] is in the perfume but it doesn’t smell like it,” she told an Australian radio station at the time. “You just get sort of the after feeling of sex from the semen and the blood is sort of primal. And the blood was taken from my own blood sample so it’s like a sense of having me on your skin.” The fragrance will hit shelves in September, just in time for her next turn as a Vogue cover girl, MTV Style reports. September is shaping up to be a big month for the singer as she will also announce the name of her next album then. Related Videos Lady Gaga: Inside The Outside Related Artists Lady Gaga

Selena Gomez Says ‘Spicy’ ‘Fifty Shades’ Role Isn’t For Her

‘Spring Breakers’ star, who appears in Funny or Die parody, tells MTV News ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ is ‘intriguing.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Cory Midgarden Selena Gomez Photo: MTV News In May, Selena Gomez poked fun at the blush-inducing literary phenomenon that is “Fifty Shades of Grey.” Appearing in a Funny or Die sketch titled “Fifty Shades of Blue,” Gomez, playing a naive, lusty Ana Steele type, longed for her handyman, played by Nick Kroll, who comes across in the skit as anything but the suave, sexy Christian Grey from the trilogy. However, before Gomez hit the set for the short, she had to do some research and read E. L. James’ book. Well, what she read truly did leave her cheeks rosy. “I only read the beginning of it, because when they told me about the skit, I didn’t know what it was about,” she told MTV News. “So I started to read it, and I was like, ‘Oh, this is spicy.’ So I thought it was good, it was intriguing. Obviously, it’s working, so the skit was really funny.” While it seems that every actress in Hollywood has some form of “Fifty Shades” fever, given that the book will soon be made into a movie, did starring in “Fifty Shades of Blue” make Gomez want to tackle the starring role in the real thing? “I don’t think so. I know I’m taking risks, but I don’t think I could do that!” she said. “That would be a little too much for me. I think someone older should do that part.” “Fifty Shades” might be a bit too mature for Gomez, but her next slate of projects will show that the 19-year-old is growing up, even if at a slower pace. In addition to her bikini-clad role in the “raw” “Spring Breakers,” Gomez will soon begin work on her next album . “I am missing music, so we’re going to start on the fourth record at the end of this year,” she explained about heading back into the studio after working on several film projects. “Very different! I want to go for producers that probably wouldn’t want me to do their songs. I just want to knock on their door. I also want to work with Fun. I want to work with just different styles of music. “I also want to work with Taylor [Swift] too. So I just want to do different things for this album,” she added. “By the time it comes out, I’ll almost be 21, so I want to be able to — wow, that sounds really scary! — I want it to be older.” Who should star in the ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ movie?
