British ‘Price Tag’ singer won’t let a broken foot slow her down on Sunday night. Yeah, she co-wrote the Miley Cyrus hit. Chris Brown’s “I Need This” — Jessie again. She’s also worked on songs for Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and Alicia Keys. And, of course, Jessie J is the house artist for this year’s VMAs , the capper to a year that saw her finally release her long-gestating debut, Who You Are, which included a tune she originally wrote for Rihanna, the raunchy “Do It Like a Dude.” What befits a budding British pop star’s biggest moment on live American TV? How about a giant orthopedic brace? And we don’t mean the fake Lady Gaga kind. “I broke my foot, so I have this crazy ‘Star Wars’ moon boot,” Jessie said on Thursday about being laid-up for her VMA debut. “I’m gonna pimp out my crutches for the red carpet.” While rehearsing, Jessie fell off a stage and snapped her ankle, but she said it will have no effect on her performance at all, as she plans to take a seat on a throne and rock it out. “It hasn’t really sunk in yet,” she said of the honor of serving as the house artist. “I’ve watched the VMAs every single year, and always wished I could be there. … So, I’m going to be singing a lot, and people seeing me, and every single person I’ve ever looked up to in the music industry is going to be in the same room at once. R&B artist Syl Johnson alleges Watch the Throne track samples his ‘Different Strokes’ without permission By Alvin Blanco Jay-Z and Kanye West Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage Def Jam’s lawyers are about to get busier. According to a post on “archival record label” and publisher the Numero Uno Group ‘s blog, acclaimed R&B/soul singer Syl Johnson is considering a lawsuit against the Throne (Jay-Z and Kanye West) for an uncleared sample of one of his songs on their album Watch the Throne. A sample of Johnson’s 1967 song “Different Strokes,” which appears on the track “The Joy,” was allegedly never properly cleared. “Two decades and several lawsuits later, Syl Johnson is a veteran of copyright infringement cases, and has done very well for himself clearing samples from his fertile catalog (we’re glad to say we’ve helped him with a few) for use in numerous tracks,” reads part of the post. “He’s been amply paid, as he is quick to boast in his concerts, by acts like Wu-Tang Clan, Kid Rock, and Michael Jackson. Other performers … have not been so respectful.” The post, titled “Syl Johnson vs Kanye West/Jay-Z,” goes on to say that the Numero Uno Group reached out to Def Jam’s business department about clearing “The Joy” after Syl Johnson had gotten wind of the song. Last year, the Pete Rock-produced tune (Kanye West is credited as producer along with Mike Dean and Mike Bhaskar) was part of the G.O.O.D. Fridays series of leaks. Although originally intended to be included on West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy , the sample was unable to be cleared in time to make the album (though an agreement was apparently reached for its use). Negotiations stalled due to the fact that the song was not actually being sold. However, “The Joy” recently reappeared as a bonus cut on the deluxe edition of Watch the Throne. The Numero Uno Group points out that in the credits for Watch the Throne, they are erroneously identified as the publishers of Syl Johnson’s “Different Strokes.” “Wondering why we weren’t consulted on this new use, and baffled why we appear in the credits, for which we never asked, we contacted the sample clearance house,” continued the post. “Even they cannot get a response from their own clients. Island Def Jam seems to think that Syl doesn’t have any fight left in him. We’re betting otherwise.” Since the song appears on an album that is being sold — Watch the Throne has already gone gold, selling more than 600,000 units to date — Johnson is expected to be properly compensated for the use of his song, whether via a lawsuit or some sort of settlement. Messages to Def Jam representatives for comment were not returned as this story went to press. Joe Jonas is really trying to kickstart his solo career. The singer has a new album coming out on October 11 and will soon hit the road on tour . First, though, he has to clear up a misconception about “Love Slayer,” one of the tracks on his upcoming CD: it’s NOT about ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift, people. “When I write songs I don’t say who they are about because I don’t want the audience to relate to what was going on with me when I wrote it,” Joe tells UK’s Metro. “You say one thing and it becomes a big rumor.” Joe Jonas – Love Slayer (Live) Jonas famously dumped Swift in 2008 with a 25-second phone call, a move she publicly bashed him for on a talk show appearance with Ellen DeGeneres. She’s also open to penning lyrics about ex-boyfriends, remarking in 2009 to Self : “If you don’t want me to write bad songs about you, then don’t do bad things.” As for what we can expect from Joe’s album, he told the British publication: “A lot of the songs speak about going through the good and bad of relationships and everything I’ve been through for the past 18 months – the touring and the traveling. It’s everything from hip hop to a bit of dancey stuff: a lot of different styles.” But nothing about Taylor or another ex, Demi Lovato , he insists. Fans will likely be listening closely to see if this is the truth.
First single, ‘Mr. Know It All,’ hits radio at the end of the month. Stronger is slated to drop October 25, preceded by the single “Mr. Know It All.” Clarkson will host a live webcast with fans August 30 on her website , during which she will debut the song. The single will then hit radio directly after the webcast and be available for sale at all major digital-music stores September 5, according to an announcement from Clarkson’s label. Fans who just can’t wait can pre-order the album from Clarkson’s site and then automatically get the single as soon as it’s available. Clarkson posted a note to her fans Tuesday explaining the decision to combine her two websites into one and expressing excitement about finally unleashing the songs. “Can’t wait for y’all to hear the new single!” she wrote. “The band and I are really excited and currently gearing up for this record! It’s gonna be a fun record to tour!” The original “American Idol” winner has been patiently anticipating a release date for the disc, telling fans last month that the long wait would soon be over. “Just found out my single is hitting radio in August!” she tweeted . “Woohoo! It sounds great as well! Can’t wait for y’all to hear it!” But just an hour later, Clarkson apologized for getting a bit too excited. “Okay please do not get angry but it might be September for my single,” she wrote. “My calendar was messed up! I’m so sorry! BUT it might be late August! It’s a huge bummer waiting but I promise it’ll be worth it! Stupid technology!!” The album, originally teased as a late 2010 release, was pushed back to early 2011, with Clarkson filling the gap in February by talking up her influences, such as Prince, Tina Turner, Radiohead, Sheryl Crow and Aretha Franklin, and hitting the studio with producer Rodney Jerkins. In early February, she announced, with a bit of consternation, that the then-untitled album was finished but had been pushed back until September. Then, last month, three songs that are reportedly slated for the album leaked, just a week after another new tune, the rocking “Let Me Down,” surfaced online. The new songs, which were quickly scrubbed from the Internet, also included the ballad “Forgive You” and the pop-rocker “Dumb + Dumb = You.” What are you expecting from Kelly’s new music? My Bieber experience happened on June 11th, 2011. I was invited to go to his benefit concert at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, CA by my friend. We had dead center, 4th row seats, meaning we were extremely close! Before the concert started we noticed that MC Hammer was sitting 2 rows behind us. Then we saw Kenny Hamilton walking through the crowd to go say hi to him. I basically died when I saw Kenny and I started climbing over the seats to get to him. Right as Kenny was turning to walk back to the backstage area, I put my camera infront of us and got a picture of me and him. As I was freaking out, Kenny said “That’s a bad picture take another one”. He then had to go, but I was almost in tears I was so happy! The concert started and it was amazing! Halfway through, my friend and I noticed we could climb over seats and get around people and make our way up to the front row. At this venue the front row could touch the stage. During Down To Earth, it was a quiet moment in the song and I yelled something like “MARRY ME!” and I guess Justin heard it cause he looked right at me and smiled at me then did the head nod at me! I basically freaked out! Then during Runaway Love, Justin came up right in front of me and put his hand out! He was holding my hand for about 2 whole seconds! THE BEST 2 SECONDS OF MY LIFE! I was crying of happiness after that. At the end of the concert, Justin had already left and Dan Kanter was finishing the concert off with a guitar solo. When he was finished I started yelling “PICK! PICK!” because I wanted his guitar pick, but instead of giving me his pick, he hands me a folded piece of paper. At first I was really confused what it was, but then the security guard in front of me was like, “Damnn girl! That’s the set list! There’s only one of those per every show. That thing is worth a ton!”. I learned that the set list is a piece of paper that says the songs he is going to sing and in what order, and when he is supposed to get water and throw his hat and stuff. Chicago-based singer Rebecca Francescatti claims Gaga’s song is similar to a song she recorded in 1999 called ‘Juda.’ By Kara Warner Lady Gaga Photo: Michael Loccisano/ Getty Images Relatively unknown Chicago-based singer Rebecca Francescatti has filed a lawsuit against Lady Gaga for alleged copyright infringement on her hit single “Judas.” According to TMZ , Francescatti claims that “Juda,” a song she recorded in 1999 with her band Rebecca F. & the Memes, has multiple similarities with Gaga’s track, chief among them the fact that Francescatti’s former bass player Brian Gaynor is now employed by a music company that wrote 17 songs for Gaga’s Born This Way album. NBC Chicago reported that Gaynor was open with Francescatti and admitted that he was writing for and working with Gaga. Francescatti’s lawyer, Chris Niro, told TMZ that his client is seeking proper recognition for her original work. “Though the songs are different styles, the composition is the same and the chorus is the same melody,” he told the site. “[Rebecca] is seeking recognition for what she created.” By “recognition,” Francescatti means money she believes is owed to her. In the lawsuit, a copy of which was obtained by the Huffington Post , Francescatti names Gaga, Interscope Records, Universal Music Group, DJ White Shadow and sound engineer Brian Joseph Gaynor as participants in creating the single “Judas,” a song that bears “a substantial similarity” to “Juda” in that Gaga allegedly “copied and incorporated substantial, original portions” of the work, though it was previously copyrighted and recorded with Gaynor. By Vaughn Trudeau Schoonmaker, with additional reporting by Morgan Schwartz NeedToBreathe Photo: MTV News As Taylor Swift ‘s super successful Speak Now Tour makes its way across North America this summer, her “rock-and-dance-a-billy” opening act NeedToBreathe took a moment out of their grueling schedule to tell MTV News all about life on the road with one of today’s biggest stars. “We’ve been a band for almost 11 years,” lead singer Bear Rinehart said. “It’s been little steps along the way, you know? Playing in our hometown for the first time at a club that we loved, and then getting signed by Atlantic Records, and then Taylor called and wanted us to tour with her ’cause she’s a fan.” During the four-man band’s first soundcheck of the tour, the guys were surprised to discover just how much of a NeedToBreathe fan Taylor is. “[It was] her and her family sitting out in the crowd, like, singing along to every word of the songs that we’re doing in the soundcheck,” drummer Joe Stillwell recalled. “It’s a little surreal to kind of see that from somebody that you see on such a big scale all the time.” While South Carolina’s NeedToBreathe have been on the music scene for a while now, the Speak Now tour has been an experience unlike any other for the group. “We haven’t played in venues this big, so that’s been a little bit to get used to,” Bear noted. “The first night you walk out there and there’s 20,000 people, it’s like, ‘Whoa, this is pretty intense!’ ” “Her fans, for the most part, are younger than our fanbase,” said lead guitarist Bo Rinehart (Bear’s brother). “Some of these people, it’s the first rock and roll show they’ve ever been to,” Bear said with a laugh about Taylor’s hard-core fans. “Sometimes we’ll see the mom wearing a NeedToBreathe shirt and the kid wearing the Taylor Swift shirt!” The band’s fourth studio album, The Reckoning, hits stores in September. My best friend Jeanette and I had been talking about going to one of Justin’s My World Tour concerts. Since we live in Norway, we obviously decided to go to ask if we can go to Denmark because that was the closest place. The day we were going to ask our parents, we went straight to Jeanette’s house after school. We were there for a while to plan how we were going to ask them. We came up with many key points why they should let us go. I went home to ask my parents while Jeanette was going to ask hers. When I came home I did my all of my home work, cleaned my room and everything. I was sitting on the computer and called my mom and dad to come in. I clicked on the tour dates and started to come up with all the reasons why they should let me go. They just looked at each other and said yes. I thought they were kidding because that is so unlike them just to say yes. We ended up going to Milan instead of Denmark but that was totally fine with us! We bought the tickets and I ran down to Jeantte’s house, we we’re so happy jumping around and started planning our trip, even though it was 6 months until we we’re going to leave. Finally on April 8th we left for Milan. The concert was the next day on the 9th. When we arrived to Milan we went shopping. We couldn’t sleep that night, we were so exited for the concert, we were listning to his songs and jumping around. And deciding what to wear to the concert. The day of the concert, we understood we were going to see THE Justin Bieber. The concert was so much fun, he did a really great performance. Jeanette had been walking around the whole trip saying, ”I have this crazy feeling about us bumping into Justin”. I was like, ”Yeah sure…” she just answered ”Never Say Never!”. So we we’re going to leave and on our way to the airport, and I thought.. yeah sure we’re going to ”bump” into him now, we’re leaving in 2 hours. We checked in and our dads went to pay for something. I then saw a man, and I thought, ”Wow! He looks just like Dan Kanter!” When he got closer, I saw that it was him, I was shocked and I said, ”Hey, how are you?” and he answered ”I’m good, how about you?” ”I’m fine thank you”. My best friend who was standing right next to me didn’t pay attention because she thought it was just a creepy Italian dude trying to flirt with me! When he walked away, I was like, ”Did you see who that was!?” ”Umm… No?” ”It was Dan Kanter!!!” and she was like ”What?! Where!? When!?”, it was then all the feelings came, because we knew we we’re so close to Justin. So later on we decided to ask for a picture but we saw he was eating therefore we waited to ask for a picture. When he was done, we got a picture together and he also gave us one of his guitar pick’s. Behind him we saw Ryan Good, of course we had to ask for a picture with him too. My dad, Jeanette and her dad went into a store in the airport, while I was waiting outside. I sat on the floor there just watching films from the concert the day before on my camera. When I was looking around I saw Kenny! Then I saw a guy with a cap and sunglasses on, that walked just like Justin (you know his swag walk). My jaw was literally dropping, my heart started beating really fast, so fast I thought it was bad for my health. I ran into the store to get Jeanette, I was trying to calm myself down because I seriously couldn’t breathe. Jeanette told me to calm down and I all I could say was ”Justin Bieber” and point, she was like ”Yeah sure Frida” because it is really typical me and be joking about things like that. Then she saw I was serious, she was just like, ”Frida where is he?”. I saw that Justin was in a watch store so I ran to him and got my pokerface on. “Hi Justin!” Justin said, “Hey beautiful” (at that point I thought I was going to faint! Jeanette came later because I ran so fast). We asked for a picture and we took it and said bye. We walked from there just saying, “OMG OMG OMG”, so when he couldn’t see us we ran through all the people in the store to our dad’s screaming! They didn’t understand a thing. Then we saw Alfredo in the front and with the rest of the crew and Justin. We walked around in the store and told eachother to pretend like nothing. Then Justin said, ”Bye girls nice to meet you!” We were just looking at him and waving ”Bye Justin!” . I just stood there staring at him and noticed I haven’t hugged him! I automatically started walking after him into the private lounge. Jeanette was like, ”Where are you going!?” ”I forgot to hug him!” ”Oh me too!”. Kenny said something to us but we didn’t pay attention (sorry Kenny). We got a hug (he smelled so good oh my god!) and talked. This is what we talked about. Justin: So… where are you guys going? Me: We’re going back to Norway we came to see your concert. Justin: Wow…Did you enjoy it? Us: Yes off course! Justin: That’s nice. But sorry guys I gotta go now! Us: Ok bye! We love you! Justin: Bye!
