Lady Gaga? Britney Spears? Fans Pick Their 2011 Summer Jams

Katy Perry, Pitbull, Chris Brown and Adele also found support from MTV.com readers. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Getty Images Now that school’s out and folks are slathering on the sunscreen, we figured it was time to take the temperature of the annual Summer Jam Sweepstakes — the race to dominate the airwaves (and your tanning playlist) during the long, hot months of the year. So last week, we published our initial rankings in the race for the Summer Jam crown , a list that was topped by Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” with Pitbull’s “Give Me Everything” and LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem” following close behind. A whole host of other big-name stars — like Eminem, Nicki Minaj, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Adele, to name just a few — also made the cut, along with some dark-horse candidates (like Foster the People, Maroon 5 and David Guetta) who are determined to make this competition close. Of course, our rankings had you talking too — in fact, the conversation in our comments section got so huge (we even heard from a Hall of Fame third baseman!) that we’ve decided to spotlight some of the best back-and-forth right now. What’s your pick for the Song of Summer 2011? Here’s what you had to say: “This has been Katy’s decade so far! She made pop music fun again.” — Tuffy Luvvy ” ‘Lighters’ by Eminem, Royce and Bruno Mars all the way, baby! It’s a long-shot, I know. I think Katy Perry will get it, but you never know.” — lilbittaflava “I like Katy, but ‘I Wanna Go’ from Britney sounds more like a summer song.” — Aaron “Britney Spears! ‘I Wanna Go’ just makes my summer great!” — Melissa Goulart “Britney Spears all the way! ‘I Wanna Go’ all the way! I’m still in love with Pitbull’s ‘Give Me Everything,’ and his album is amazing. Nicki Minaj’s ‘Super Bass’ is sick, love it!” — RyanJaggerz ” ‘The Edge of Glory’ is a glorious pop anthem-masterpiece, no need for it to be crowned as a ‘jam.’ Adele’s ‘Rolling’ is heart-touching, breathtaking and also a masterpiece.” — Spyros Venturis ” ‘Moves Like Jagger’ by Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera is amazing!” — SuperZonic Jbsz “Oh I couldn’t believe when I saw them, thank you so much MTV for putting them on the list … I love them, talking about of course FOSTER THE PEOPLE YEAHHHHHHH.” — hotalejandro ” ‘Tonight Tonight’ by Hot Chelle Rae! I could party to that every day of the summer.” — WhatShouldIDo? “You guys forgot about New Boyz ft. Chris Brown, ‘Better With the Lights Off,’ and Lupe Fiasco ft. Trey Songz, ‘Outta My Head.’ ” — booklady “All these songs have that ‘I’ve heard it all before’ sound to them. Nothing special about any of the songs on the list. A lot of the ‘artists’ on this list would be better off working a mop at a Waffle House. It’s Kanye’s fault.” — Mike Schmidt What do you think? Share your Summer Jam picks in the comments below! Diggy Simmons’ ‘Copy, Paste’ Is ‘Anthem’ For Innovators

Diggy talks to MTV News on set of Phil the God-directed video. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Kelly Marino Diggy Simmons Photo: MTV News Diggy Simmons fancies himself an originator, and his first official single, “Copy, Paste,” is a toast to the young rapper’s individuality. MTV News caught up with the son of Rev Run on the set of the song’s video in L.A. ” ‘Copy, Paste’ is just for people that are original, people that are innovators, people that just do their own thing,” he said. “I feel as though that I’m a person like that myself, so just making a theme song or an anthem for people that are like that.” The video, directed by Phil the God, features Diggy in a lab, tied up with tubes. The young rapper bypassed making a run-of-the-mill, club-set rap video. “It feels great working with Phil the God, that’s the director that did ‘Made You Look’ with me; he did ‘What They Been Waiting For’ and ‘Shook Ones.’ Those are like my three viral videos that I did when I was doing my mixtapes, and he just came up with the best treatment,” Diggy told MTV News. “It just feels right: We have a great connection. We’ll hop on the phone and talk about ideas, the things I want to do, the things he wants to do, and just get hyped off of each other’s energy, and the best will come out of that.” After making his stamp in the mixtape game with the 2010 DJ Premier-hosted Past, Presents, Future and Airborne , the 2011 XXL Magazine freshman is putting the finishing touches on his yet-untitled Atlantic Records debut album. While there is no release date set, Simmons estimated he is about 85 percent done. He also revealed that the previously leaked, Bruno Mars-assisted “Click Clack Away” won’t make the LP’s final track list. Diggy promised some “great features,” but insisted the album will focus primarily on him. “A lot of it is me: There are only a few features, though, but there are features that fit the songs perfectly,” he said. “I don’t really go based off of, ‘Oh, I like this artist, let’s do a song with them.’ I like doing that, but the way this went was, ‘Oh, he would sound great on this hook, let’s do it.’ Otherwise, it’s all me.” What do you think of Diggy Simmons’ new single? Katy Perry Closing In On Michael Jackson’s #1 Singles Record

If ‘Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)’ tops Hot 100, Perry’s Teenage Dream will tie MJ’s mark of five #1s from a single album. By James Montgomery Katy Perry Photo: John Parra/ WireImage Katy Perry’s unstoppable Teenage Dream album continues to churn out hits … and now, it might just make history too. If Dream ‘s fifth single, the just-released “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” , continues its climb to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 (it currently sits at #4, jumping 27 spots from last week), Perry will not only become the first female artist to ever have five #1 songs off one album, she’ll be the first artist of any gender to accomplish the feat since Michael Jackson had five chart-topping singles off his Bad album in 1987 and 1988. Perry’s previous #1s from the Dream album are, of course, “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “Firework” and “E.T.” Jackson’s five #1s from the Bad album are “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” “Bad,” “The Way You Make Me Feel,” “Man in the Mirror” and “Dirty Diana.” Perry has already shattered the Hot 100 record for most consecutive weeks with a single inside the Top 10 (48, a number previously held by Swedish popmeisters Ace of Base), then kept that momentum going by spending an entire year in the chart’s upper echelon. More incredibly, that streak is still active, as two of Perry’s singles — “T.G.I.F.” and “E.T.” — sit at numbers 4 and 5, respectively. What’s more, “T.G.I.F” currently sits atop the Billboard Digital Songs chart, and may soon be her sixth single to pass the 4 million mark in digital sales, joining “E.T.,” “California Gurls,” “Firework,” and from her One of the Boys album, “Hot N Cold” and “I Kissed a Girl.” No other artist has even had four songs pass the 4 million download mark … Perry’s closest competitors in that regard are Lady Gaga and Rihanna, both of whom have had three 4 million-sellers. Evanescence Return With ‘Dark, Beautiful’ Self-Titled Album

Amy Lee tells MTV News that the band’s new album, due October 4, is full of songs that are ‘painful’ and ‘desperate.’ By James Montgomery Evanescence’s Amy Lee Photo: Getty Images It’s been nearly four years since Evanescence wrapped the tour in support of their last album, The Open Door. In that time, singer Amy Lee has been hard at work doing anything but fronting a globally successful rock act. Sure, she wrote some songs along the way, but mostly, her focus was on being, as she puts it, “a normal person.” And, yes, she enjoyed every minute of it. “I would buy groceries, I thought about teaching kids music … I just needed to get away from it. My entire adult life, until a couple years ago, was all about this,” she told MTV News. “When I just turned 18, I got signed. I quit college, and we just moved into a house together and just started cramming to do whatever we needed to do to make it. And then we went to L.A., and the label had us up there doing artist development for a couple years, and then we were on tour and it went big fast, and then right after touring behind Fallen, we started writing again right away. … I just wanted to be a normal person for a minute, before I was 50 years old. “I got married and we were in the middle of a tour — I had, like, one week off, and then we went straight back on tour — and there was plenty of stuff that went on in that time; there was drama … there’s always freaking drama,” she continued. “So we get towards the end of it, and I was like, ‘Guys, I don’t know about this. I need a break.’ I just wanted to be normal; I didn’t want to think about the next thing for as long as it took.” And considering how hard she worked at avoiding Evanescence, it’s ironic that all it took was a single show with the band — a 2009 warm-up gig for a headlining spot at the Maquin

Casey Veggies Graduates, Despite Sleeping In Class

L.A. rapper made the honor roll while on the road, his mom and teacher share. By Steven Roberts, with additional reporting by Matt Elias Casey Veggies and his mother, Cynthia Jones Photo: MTV News The last year has been a breakout one for Los Angeles MC Casey Veggies , who released his third mixtape, Sleeping in Class, in December and toured with fellow up-and-comer Mac Miller in January. What’s more amazing is that while this was going on, he was still in school. And on June 16, Veggies (or, as his diploma says, Casey Jones) graduated from Inglewood High School on the honor roll. “On the first week of school, he gave me a link to a video of one of the songs that he has [on Sleeping in Class ], so my first impression of him was good, but I was a little concerned, because of the lyrics to the song,” Casey’s senior-year English teacher Shannon Kirk told MTV News. “It’s actually kind of ironic because [sleeping in class is] the last thing he would do in class. “Casey balances his work life and his school life better than I probably would have at his age,” Kirk added of her student, who did independent study while he was on the road. “He’s pretty mature for his age, and he was able to do pretty well. [He] was one of the top students in my class.” Veggies realized that he could have quit school to pursue his dreams, but he never felt the need to. He knew he could handle it, so why not get school done? As for college, though his mother says he was accepted to four schools, he’s postponing those plans while he sees where his rap career goes. “At the end of the day, I’m just dreaming right now,” Casey said. “I’m going to stay in my dream and don’t plan on waking up. If I do, maybe I’ll grab a college degree, but right now, I’m in my own world.” Kirk wouldn’t tell us Casey’s grades, but his mother, Cynthia Jones, was thrilled that her son made the honor roll. She said that education meant everything to her and her husband, and their goal was always for Casey and his older brother, Corey, to graduate high school and attend college as they had. Corey is currently a freshman at UC Riverside, but Casey had to convince her that he could take another route. “I had no idea that his music thing was going to come about the way it has,” Jones said. “This is different to accept, but he’s doing really well, so you have to let a person follow [their dreams]. You’re only young once. “I’m excited, I’m happy for him,” she continued, “and then I’m happy he doesn’t have to juggle these two lives, because it has been a juggle for him, so now he can concentrate on one thing.”

Will 50 Cent Leave Interscope After Next Album?

‘It will all be clear in the negotiations following me turning this actual album in,’ Fif tells MTV News. By Rob Markman 50 Cent Photo: Tiffany Rose/ WireImage After selling millions of records with Interscope, will 50 Cent be looking to jump ship? Anything is possible as the G-Unit head honcho prepares his fifth and final contracted album on the powerhouse label. “I don’t know,” 50 told MTV News when asked if he would ink back with Interscope once his five-album deal was fulfilled. “It will all be clear in the negotiations following me turning this actual album in. And, of course, the performance and how they actually treat the work will determine whether you still want to stay in that position or not.” Last week, on June 16, Fif took his label to task via Twitter when he fired off, “I’m sorry to announce I will not be releasing a new album this year if we don’t get on the same page.” Soon after, he tweeted: “My whole career iv been doing sh– and they have been playing catch up this is the last f—ing album THEY BETTER WAKE UP AND WORK.” Feeling he could no longer wait on the label and that he had to take matters into his own hands, the rapper then went on to release his new street single “Outlaw” later that evening. “It’s not necessarily [Dr.] Dre or [chairman] Jimmy [Iovine]; it’s more the guys that they pass the responsibilities on to,” 50 told MTV News the next day. “It takes longer for people, because they’ll be like, ‘OK, we’re gonna do this and we’re gonna do that,’ and the building will start having those conversations, but they’re not actually moving at that point. “They’re behind it, but to get everybody moving at the same beat and moving at the same pace is the object,” he added. “That was what the goal was even writing that statement and releasing the song.” It’s obvious that for 50, there is a lot riding on this project. He isn’t opposed to re-signing with the record company helmed by Iovine, but he also isn’t opposed to walking away and going independent either. For the Southside Jamaica, Queens, MC, the label support for his upcoming LP will determine his next move. “It’s not like you’re gonna be able to make a project bigger than the actual project is, but if the songs are right and you have full support and you feel that support, why would you want to go anywhere else?” he said. “If not, if you don’t have that support, why would you want to sign to another system? In the financial state that I’m in, you just do it yourself.” In 2010, 50 took his artist Lloyd Banks and signed him to EMI Records , where he structured the deal to operate much like an independent. Banks’ The Hunger for More album has already produced five singles and created a presence for the Queens rapper among his contemporaries. “You’ve seen the success of Lloyd Banks’ project with me being behind him financially,” 50 said. “You can’t tell the difference between him and other artists that are on major record companies.” Do you think 50 should stick with Interscope or go indie? Britney Spears Takes Down Paparazzi In ‘I Wanna Go’ Teaser

Spears sashays around NYC knocking out photogs with her microphone in the video, which debuts Wednesday. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears in her “I Wanna Go” video Photo: Jive It’s been a while since Britney Spears decided to take down the paparazzi in one of her music videos (see “Pieces of Me”). In a new teaser for her “I Wanna Go” clip, a fit and smiling Spears is seeking ninja-like vengeance against her biggest enemies: the paparazzi and their prying lenses. In the 30-second tease of the Chris Marrs Piliero-directed video, set to officially drop on Wednesday, Spears stands on a Los Angeles soundstage that’s set to look like New York City and surveys the scene. She’s standing atop a taxi, while cameramen surround her from all angles. Wielding a microphone, the singer whips it around like a weapon, knocking the paps from their positions. These scenes are intercut with Spears standing alone and singing into that same microphone, wearing the T-shirt depicting a skull with Mickey Mouse ears from the single’s cover art. Spears tweeted out some stills from the video as well. In one, she’s seen walking down a city street past an NYPD cop car. In another, with her hair undone and wearing a tight red shirt and lots of necklaces, she poses in profile up against a wall, lights flashing around her. Sneak peeks of the “I Wanna Go” video seem to prove that the visuals will certainly match the song’s reckless-abandon lyrics about busting loose from the confines of life, regardless of the consequences. She sings, “Lately I’ve been stuck imaginin’/ What I wanna do and what I really think, time to blow out/ Be a little inappropriate ’cause I know that everybody’s/ Thinkin’ it when the lights out/ Shame on me/ To need release/ Un-uncontrollably.” Related Videos Britney Spears: I Am The Femme Fatale Related Artists Britney Spears
