The-Dream Is Mulling An Acting Career, ‘Make Up Bag’ Co-Star Says

Singer is working on a yet-untitled film project, says Jason Weaver, who co-stars in his upcoming ‘Make Up Bag’ video. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Matt Elias The-Dream and Jason Weaver Photo: MTV News The-Dream began hinting at possible retirement in the weeks leading up to the release this spring of Love King, the third project in his trilogy. But now that the collection is out, what exactly will the songwriter do? According to his “Make Up Bag” video co-star, Jason Weaver, the Atlanta singer is set to venture into acting. “The name of the project is tentatively titled “Road to Beaverton,” the actor told MTV News. “Pretty much what this video is, “Make Up Bag,” is the set up for the film.” The yet-unreleased “Make Up Bag” video is set against a 1930s motif and in the clip, The-Dream, Weaver, and T.I. all don pinstripe suits. Weaver and The-Dream didn’t offer any additional details, but the songwriter has said in the past that the grind of a solo career is too much for him to juggle with his duties as production partner to Christoper “Tricky” Stewart. The-Dream and Stewart have an enviable track record, collaborating on hits for Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige and Rihanna, among others. And while The-Dream hasn’t formally indicated Love King would be his last word as a solo artist, with a schedule that includes work on T.I.’s upcoming solo project, he’d be as busy tending to the rapper’s career as his own. In the past, he hasn’t seemed to mind the balancing act, going out of his way to praise his collaborators, including the Grand Hustle boss. “Tip is in a zone, man,” The-Dream told MTV News earlier this year. “He’s in one of those things. But me just being a lyric guy, what makes songs, I think, hits is when it comes from the heart and you really are saying something you mean. And you can feel it through the passion. Every record he played me, I was like, ‘Wow.’ I could just feel it.” Are you interested in seeing The-Dream take his talents to Hollywood? Talk about it in the comments! Related Artists The-Dream

Eminem Honors Dr. Dre At ASCAP Awards Ceremony

‘He changed the face of music and he changed my life,’ Eminem says. By Kelly Marino Dr. Dre Photo: MTV News It’s been over a decade since his last solo album, but when Dr. Dre was honored with ASCAP’s Founders Award Friday night, it was a reminder to everyone that the doctor is still one of hip-hop’s biggest pioneers in the game today. The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers held it’s 23rd annual Rhythm and Soul Music Awards last night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, where some of music’s biggest names were recognized for their contributions to music. The biggest award of the night was handed to Dr. Dre for his achievements in the music industry and for inspiring and influencing his fellow music makers. The ASCAP association put together a presentation package that played across the big screens, highlighting some of Dre’s greatest quotes. One moment that had the audience cheering was Dre’s stab at critics, saying, “You can’t critique my sh– unless you have done half of the stuff I have accomplished.” Shortly after the piece ended, DJ Kid Capri took the stage to perform a set of songs chronicling Dr. Dre’s career that included early hits such as “Keep Their Heads Ringin’,” “Let Me Ride,” and “Gin and Juice” as well as more recent Dre productions such as “In Da Club,” “Family Affair,” and “Rich Girl.” Eminem made a rare, surprise appearance to present the award to Dr. Dre, whom he thanked for believing in him. “It would have been a lot easier for Dre to dismiss me like most people did,” Eminem stated. “But he didn’t. He stepped up to the challenge because he saw something in me. … He changed the face of music and he changed my life.” Dre then took the stage to accept the award, pausing during his speech as he fought back tears. “I’m living an incredible life,” he said. “Making a living doing what I love and having people love it. I can’t even explain what that feels like.” Dre went on to pay respects to his mother, who became pregnant with him at the age of 15. “She was always told by family, friends and neighbors or whatever, she was going to ruin her life and mine,” he said. He also thanked his wife, whom he described as his in-house A&R and playfully promised her he was going to give her “something real special for this tonight.” Closing out his speech, he thanked Jimmy Iovine, chairman of Interscope-Geffen-A&M Records, for being with him through his ups and downs, and last but certainly not least, his fans. Some of the other top awards handed out Friday were Songwriter of the Year, which Jimmy Jam presented to Ne-Yo and the hit-making duo C. “Tricky” Stewart and The-Dream, who tied with six chart-topping singles each. T.I. graced the stage to present fellow Atlantans Jermaine Dupri, Johnta Austin and Manuel Seal with Song of the Decade for “We Belong Together.” Matthew “Boi-1da” Samuels was honored for last year’s smash hit “Best I Ever Had,” which he wrote for Drake. “Blame It” by Jamie Foxx and featuring T-Pain earned writers Christopher Henderson, Brandon “Note” Melancon, The-Dream, C. “Tricky” Stewart, and Nate Walka the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Song of the Year. And Big Boi presented the ASCAP’s Vanguard Award to his friend and “high funktress” Janelle Monae, who accepted the award on behalf of her team the Wondaland Arts Society. Perez Hilton Calls Travis Garland An ‘Authentic Artist’

Gossip blogger says his artist is only at the ‘beginning of the beginning’ of his career. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Perez Hilton Photo: MTV News On Wednesday night’s “American Idol,” the world was introduced to Travis Garland, an artist gossip blogger Perez Hilton hopes to launch as the next big thing. Perez thinks Garland’s debut single, “Believe,” is a track that will pique music fans’ interest. “I’m so excited to be working with Travis, because he’s the first artist that I found [and] have been involved with every step of the way,” Perez told MTV News at Garland’s rehearsal for his “Idol” debut. “And we’re at this amazing moment now, and it’s exciting to see it already working. And that’s just the beginning of the beginning. “We’re looking forward to taking him on the road this summer all over and seeing his fans,” Hilton added. “He’s already got girls and guys and people who are familiar with him from NLT.” Perez is referring to the now-defunct boy band that included Garland and “Glee” star Kevin McHale, until they broke up last year. While Hilton wasn’t too familiar with NLT, he learned about Garland on the Web. “I became aware of Travis thanks to the Internet,” he said. “Over a year ago, I started working with Travis. Around that time, he did a reworking of Justin Timberlake’s song ‘Dead and Gone’ with T.I., and I loved Travis’ version so much. I was like, ‘Wow, this is different.’ And it felt real and dangerous and edgy and raw, and I was like, ‘I need to meet this kid.’ I was really blown away.” The gossip gangster believes Garland has the “it” factor. “What’s special about Travis Garland is, he’s not only a great singer and a great dancer, but he’s also a songwriter,” Perez boasted. “He also plays piano. He also produces, and he’s just a real, authentic artist. And that’s what people want nowadays.” What did you think of Garland’s debut on “American Idol”? Let us know in the comments!

Kelly (“Speedin’ “), but his latest, “Super High,” with Ne-Yo , has the potential to be his biggest success yet. I respect his lyrical ability. There’s only a few in the game that really say something when they say something, and Ross is one of those few. Ne-Yo is currently working on the follow-up to his last album, Year of the Gentleman, which he hopes to release this September.
