After $35M Opening, Sony Admits Skyline Didn’t Steal From Battle: Los Angeles

Yesterday was Thursday, when it seems the folks at Sony were in such a good mood that they dismissed their complaints of breach of contract against the Strause brothers, VFX experts and makers of last November’s indie alien invasion pic Skyline . The strongly worded charges originally accused the Strauses’ Hydraulx Entertainment of using Battle: Los Angeles equipment to make their own competing sci-fi flick, but you know what helps smooth over disputes like this? Discovering that Skyline ‘s effects were completely different from those in Battle: Los Angeles . Also: Having $35 million in your pocket.

Monday Morning Talkback: Let’s Hear About Battle: Los Angeles

Happy Monday! Now that we’ve all sprung forward, it’s time to address one of the weekend’s other primary cultural matters: Battle: Los Angeles . Is Moneyball the Next Social Network?

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: A popular non-fiction book — without any real cinematic leanings — gets turned into a buzzed-about feature film with the help of Aaron Sorkin, Scott Rudin, Michael De Luca, and Sony Pictures. ESPN writer Jon Weisman (formerly of Variety) makes the case that the Bennett Miller-directed film could be a sleeper hit next fall along the lines of The Social Network and that other Michael Lewis penned sports-book-turned-movie, The Blind Side . Probably not, but, hey, Brad Pitt is in it! So, maybe? [ ESPN ]

Watch Family Guy Parody Return of the Jedi, With Bonus Alec Baldwin Joke

If you always thought that Return of the Jedi would benefit from toilet humor, good news: Seth MacFarlane has reimagined the Richard Marquand classic to do just so in Family Guy ‘s third and final Star Wars parody: It’s a Trap! The feature, which will be released on DVD tomorrow, includes Han Solo flatulence jokes, Paraplegic Joe as Jabba the Hut and a cameo from Pee-wee Herman. If that isn’t enticing enough, allow MacFarlane to sell you on the latest George Lucas homage: “It’s more of exactly the same kind of jokes you’ve seen in the other two. So if you like those, this is the same and you’ll enjoy it just as much.” Take your first look ahead.
