Michael Jackson Estate Signs Biggest Recording Contract In History

New deal with Sony Music, estimated at $250 million, will include unreleased music, DVDs and video games. By Gil Kaufman Michael Jackson Photo: Sony Even in death, Michael Jackson remains the King of Pop. Less than a year after his shocking passing, the administrators of the late pop icon’s estate have signed the biggest recording contract in music history, a deal that the Los Angeles Times speculated could be worth up to $250 million and include unreleased recordings, DVDs and video games. The seven-year deal with Jackson’s longtime home, Sony Music Entertainment, could cover up to 10 new Jackson projects, though no specific releases were announced on Monday. “We and Sony feel that the future for Michael Jackson is unlimited,” said John Branca, a special administrator for the estate. In a testament to his enduring appeal, the Jackson deal eclipses a number of mega-deals signed by contemporary acts, including Bruce Springsteen’s $110 million deal with Columbia Records in 2005 and Robbie Williams’ $150-million pact with EMI in 2002. According to an anonymous source with knowledge of Jackson’s financial dealings, in the nine months since his death the singer has sold more than 31 million albums at a time when the music industry continues a decade-long album sales slide. In fact, the combination of those sales and other licensing deals cut by Branca have brought in close to $250 million to the estate, which has helped to ease the burden of the nearly $500 million in debt Jackson owed at the time of his death. Rob Stringer, the chairman of Columbia Epic Records, the Sony division that will likely handle the releases, said the recordings will “span across different projects. There may be theater. There may be films and movies. There may be computer games — or multimedia platforms that I don’t know about today that will happen in 2015.” Already in store is a another reissue of Jackson’s solo debut, 1979’s Off the Wall, due next year, with a variety of new, exclusive material. A special edition of that album was re-released in 2001 with a pair of unreleased demos of the songs “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” and “Workin’ Day and Night.” “The stuff we have in the vaults around that record is fascinating and remarkable,” Stringer said. “We’re going to build a whole platform with a documentary. The outtakes are fantastic! We have a lot of great stuff from around every time period [in Jackson’s career]. We’re plowing through everything now to understand what we’ve got.” The estate’s other executor, John McClain, who worked with Jackson for over 40 years and helped produce the singer’s last studio album, 2001’s Invincible, is compiling an album of previously unreleased material that could be released later this year. “John McClain tells me they’ve got over 60 unreleased recordings that they’re choosing from,” Branca told the Times. “The first album will have around 10. There’s some very recent stuff and vintage stuff that deserves to be shared with Michael’s fans.” Jackson is said to have left behind more than 100 unreleased songs that could be mined for releases for decades in the same way that the recordings of Elvis Presley and Jimi Hendrix have since those performers’ deaths. Jennifer Lopez Spoofs ‘We Are The World,’ Olympics On ‘SNL’

J. Lo’s television blitz continues with ‘How I Met Your Mother’ cameo, rumored ‘Glee’ appearance. By Hillary Crosley Jennifer Lopez spoofs “We are the World” on SNL on Febuary 27 Photo: NBC Jennifer Lopez might be between record labels , but her television appearances have been fast and frequent. After filming an episode of CBS’ “How I Met Your Mother” last month, playing a sexy self-help guru who seduces Neil Patrick Harris’ character, Lopez hit “Saturday Night Live” for the first time in almost a decade. “The first time I was on this show was 10 years ago. … Back then I was single and traveling around with a big entourage,” Lopez said, opening the show in a form-fitting black leather dress. “But people grow up; now I’m married with two beautiful children.” The singer/actress went on to have an awkward conversation with comedian and “SNL” cast member Kenan Thompson, who was posing as a discarded member of her 1990s entourage, flanked by two drag queens wearing her infamous green barely-there dress and a denim bodysuit. All ended well as Thompson left the stage with the drag queens in tow and J. Lo began the show. Another skit portrayed “We Are the World 3,” a spoof of the recent remake. Lopez played Rihanna , wearing a black and white Balmain-inspired leather jacket with gold hoops, hipster sunglasses and a blond cropped wig. “There comes a time, eh!, when we heed a certain call, eh!” Lopez sang, poking fun at the “Rude Boy” singer. In the next skit, Lopez was part of a Winter Olympics curling team. She played a confused Telemundo reporter covering the Winter Olympics in another. “We don’t understand these, es loca!” said Lopez, wearing an orange blazer. The strangest clip had to be a mock celebrity news interview in which Lopez was questioned by Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader, leading the Bronx native to scream “paciencia y fe” (“patience and faith”) like a madwoman before stomping out of view. Lopez also performed two guiter-led songs including the Danja-produced, Wynter Gordon-written “Starting Over” from her forthcoming album, Love? Her LP is slated to hit stores this summer. Lopez still has not specified what label she has signed to, but Deadline Hollywood , the blog that originally broke the story of the Sony split, reported that she is in talks with Island Def Jam. Neither she nor her former label, Sony Records, has discussed what precipitated the split, but Deadline speculated that it might have been a response to the poor critical and commercial reception to the album’s first official single, “Louboutins,” which failed to light up the charts. Lopez’s episode of “How I Met Your Mother” airs March 8, and she is rumored to be in talks for an appearance on the Golden Globe-winning show “Glee.” Related Artists Jennifer Lopez

J-Lo’s Record Split Not Amicable?

Jennifer Lopez’ s split from her record label was not an amicable one, according to US reports. J-Lo’s camp says the singer left Epic/Son y at the end of her contract and that the decision was a mutual one. But insiders tell the New York Daily News that after her last two singles, ‘ Louboutins’ and ‘Fresh Out of the Oven’ flopped, the label was not willing to take a risk on Lopez’s album ‘ Love?’ Now Lopez may try to release the album online, the source tells the News. “Epic technically owns the material from her album, so she needs to buy it back from them to have control over it,” the insider told the News. “But she’ll try to release the album online if need be. It may be her last resort to take control of a poor situation.” Lopez’s manager, Benny Medina , insists that the label did not dump Lopez. “Jennifer had a wonderful relationship with the Sony Music Group and they have shared many successes together,” he said. “But the time was right to make a change that best serves the direction of her career as an actress and recording artist.”

Jennifer Lopez Parts Ways With Sony Records

With the release of her new album up in the air, the singer/actress is set to host ‘Saturday Night Live’ this weekend. By Gil Kaufman Jennifer Lopez Photo: MTV News Jennifer Lopez is scheduled to be the host and musical guest on “Saturday Night Live” this weekend, but unlike most host/guests, at the moment Jenny from the Block doesn’t seem to have much to promote during her appearance. That’s because, according to Entertainment Weekly , the singer has split with longtime record label Sony Music’s Epic Records, which was slated to release her delayed seventh album, Love? , in April. After taking time off to become a mother of twins with husband Marc Anthony, Lopez was working on her comeback album, releasing the shoe fetish song “Louboutins” last year. She famously wiped out while lip-synching that tune at November’s American Music Awards , but when the song fizzled on the charts, failing to crack the top 10 on the singles tally, the heat on the project apparently cooled off. “Jennifer had a wonderful relationship with the Sony Music Group, and they have shared many successes together, but the time was right to make a change that best serves the direction of her career as an actress and recording artist. She is grateful and appreciative to everyone at Sony for all that they accomplished together,” the singer’s manager, Benny Medina, said in a statement Monday. Her rep told EW that Lopez is already negotiating with another record label. A Sony spokesperson could not be reached for comment at press time. The story broke on Monday on the Deadline Hollywood blog, where it was reported that Lopez’s contract had ended and that she’d fulfilled it with “Louboutins” and another recent single, “Fresh Out the Oven,” which leaked online in October. The report also stated that it’s unclear if Lopez was finished with the album, which reportedly features the Neptunes, Danja, Jim Jonsin and Rodney Jerkins. Unnamed Lopez “insiders” said the album was “by no means done” and that she had only finished a few songs for it. Lopez is slated to return to the big screen in late April in the romantic comedy “The Back-Up Plan.” Related Artists Jennifer Lopez
