REVIEW: Jewish Mom-Com ‘The Guilt Trip’ Scolds Like The Real Thing

The Guilt Trip is a film as familiar as a mother’s voice, in more ways than one. Playing a frustrated son and his overbearing mother, Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand elevate a formulaic script with their easygoing chemistry in this road-trip mom com. They produce as many laughs as they do cringes, but the film’s feel-good message is undermined by its ultimate purpose: As a vindication of the rights of Jewish mothers to annoy their children as much as they please. Rogen plays Andy, a schlubby organic chemist who’s having trouble selling his invention, a nontoxic cleaning spray. The product, clumsily named Scieoclean, is a would-be bestseller, but Andy makes a worse salesman than Tiger Woods shilling monogamy. With the last of his savings he plans a last-ditch effort to drive across the country pitching Scieoclean to several big box stores. Andy spends the day before his Jersey-to-Vegas trip with his well meaning but tirelessly chatty mother. Joyce (Streisand) is the kind of older widow who’s found a routine that’s nice and busy enough for her post-retirement years, but one that doesn’t include the emotional risks of dating. Over dinner, Joyce confesses to Andy that the love of her life was the boyfriend she had before meeting his father. A quick Google search shows that this long-lost beau also happens to be an advertising exec in San Francisco, a discovery that leads Andy to suggest Joyce join him on the eight-day trip. Of course, he casually leaves out the detail that their final destination has been moved to California, and that he hopes her ex-boyfriend will help him market his floundering product. Joyce and Andy’s travels lead them through some very familiar road-trip movie situations. Their car breaks down during a freak snowstorm, one of them takes up the challenge to eat a big chunk of cow in a Texas steakhouse, and they wonder aloud about how long they’re supposed to respectfully marvel at the Grand Canyon. These are pleasant diversions, made enjoyable by Rogen’s gregariousness and Streisand’s twinkling, gamine eyes, but amount to very little. Their journey finally gets into gear when Joyce stops her mindless nattering about sock sales at the Gap and confronts her son about his semi-hidden scorn for her. Again, the emotional beats are entirely predictable, but the rapport between the actors make them convincing. Rogen has more to work with: Andy’s a focused and ambitious adult who hasn’t yet realized that he has more growing up to do. He has a lot of hurt in his life, and it doesn’t help that Joyce’s idea of keeping in touch mostly consists of her (unknowingly) reminding him of his professional and romantic failures. Rogen also does the comedic heavy lifting here. His sarcastic one-liners are so spontaneously and perfectly delivered they have to have been improvised on the spot. (Streisand reportedly improvised some of her lines too, but she lacks her co-star’s effortless droll wit.) Streisand has much less to do, but manages to add spark to her limited material. She sells Joyce’s phobia of dating with just a few gestures and skillfully mines the character’s contradictions. There’s a lovely moment halfway through the trip when a handsome stranger approaches to court her. Andy watches the scene unfold from some distance and gently teases her about it afterward. Flustered by the unexpected male attention, Joyce squeaks out an admonishing but embarrassed, “Don’t be disgusting,” even though she’d shown nothing but eagerness to discuss his girl troubles. The script needs more of those intimate, role-confusing moments to pull the character out of her shell and make her more than just “Andy’s mom.” That we have no idea what Joyce has done in the three decades since meeting Andy’s father and taking this trip is a particularly glaring omission. Though Andy undergoes the bigger transformation, it’s safe to say it’s the Jewish mother — the archetype, not Joyce — who gets her revenge in the film. She fights dirty too, by appearing in the guise of a nice, attractive sexagenarian without a sadistic bone in her body. As the latest iteration of the Oedipal nightmare that is mothers who try to stuff their sons back into their wombs, Joyce is only an honorary member in that pantheon of disapproving control freaks. She isn’t a Talmudic scholar on the art of maternal passive aggression like Debbie Reynolds in Albert Brooks’ Mother or the sharp-eyed crones in Woody Allen films — she’s much too harmless and boring. But if Joyce isn’t much of a scold, the film sure is. In fact, The Guilt Trip can feel like one long, occasionally funny, occasionally haranguing reminder to love your mother. It dings Andy pretty hard for being exasperated by his mother’s penny-pinching and cluelessness, and the basic lesson he learns from their week together is that his mother has all the right answers to everything. The film even lays the source of Joyce’s most wounding behavior, her inadvertent twists of the knife already lodged deep in Andy by life and failure, at his feet. If you’d only call , the film says, I’d know not to hurt you . Oy vey. Inkoo Kang is a film critic and investigative journalist in Boston. David Letterman on Newtown Tragedy: It Makes Me So Sad

David Letterman struck an uncharacteristically somber note Monday night, addressing the Newtown, Connecticut shooting for nearly seven minutes. Returning from commercial, the comedian, looking visibly saddened, noted the beauty of the Christmas decorations on CBS’ Late Show set. David Letterman Sandy Hook Statement He then touched upon the senseless massacre of 26 people – including 20 children – at Sandy Hook Elementary School, saying, “It makes me so sad.” “The lights … they’re really for kids. You think about this horrifying circumstance. What part of that do you think about that’s going to make any difference?” “Do you think about the kids in the class? That’s too awful to think about,” said Dave, himself the father of a little boy and a Connecticut resident for many years. “Do you think about the parents and their friends and getting that message from the school and finding out that their lives are irrevocably broken, ruined?” “You think about your own kid. I take him to school every now and then. Are we supposed to be worried about dropping our kids off at school now?” “I never worried about it before. I always thought, well here, school is a good place where my son will be free of the idiot decisions made by his father.” Letterman then addressed both gun control and mental health, areas that have become the focus of a fiery public debate over policy reform. “Believe me, I’m not dumb enough to think that this is a problem of guns,” Letterman said. “Before there were guns, people were killing one another.” “And you can’t just say that it’s mental health or emotional problems because people with all manner of problems don’t necessarily kill each other.” But citing a document prepared by the show’s researchers, Letterman did go on to acknowledge some frightening statistics about firearms. “Since 1994, there have been 70 episodes of school shootings, (all) after the Brady Bill had passed (in 1993). Good lord, does that surprise you?” he asked. Letterman acknowledged that listening to President Barack Obama’s Newtown speech at Sunday night’s memorial made him “feel a little bit better.” “He’s going on the record, (taking) some kind of action… In a small measure, I feel better that he’s looking out for us in that regard. It’s a sad, sad holiday season.” Indeed.

Gun Sales Spike in Virginia and Colorado

While an assault weapons ban will likely go before Congress in 2013, and while many are calling for stricter gun control laws in response to the Connecticut shooting , residents in at least two states are taking a different tact: They’re getting locked and loaded. On Saturday, Virginia state police reported 4,166 filings for background checks on those seeking to purchase a gun, that’s a whopping 42 percent increase from the same date in 2011. It’s also the highest tally since the state starting tracking these transactions in 1989. Colorado also set a single-day record for background checks on Saturday; that state checked in with 4,200, a record number since it starting keeping track in 1999. Only licensed gun dealers need to perform background checks, of course, meaning these figures don’t account for an individual purchasing weapons via private sellers. Where do you stand on these facts and figures? Is it understandable folks would want to stock up in the wake of a massacre? And is it time to pass major gun control laws?   YES. Fewer guns, fewer tragedies! NO. It’s unconstitutional and won’t stop anything! View Poll »

Lindsay Lohan: BROKE!

Lindsay Lohan needs professional help like whoa and wants to see a psychiatrist to keep her out of jail (and for her general well being), but reportedly lacks the money to do so. Someone apparently doesn’t have good health insurance. “Lindsay is overwhelmed at the prospect of going back to jail and believes that a psychiatrist can help her through this trying time of her life,” says a Lohan insider. “However, Lindsay has a huge problem … she literally has no money.” How is that possible, you ask? Well, the IRS seized her bank accounts for one … and the cost of therapy is expensive if you’re hurting financially, which she is. “Her health insurance would only pay about 20 percent of the mental health bills, and the doctors that she wants to see charge $250-300 an hour,” the insider added. Fair enough, but Lohan is said to have earned $2 MILLION over the past 12 months. Where does that money go? Isn’t she working a lot? So many unanswered questions. This news comes on the heels of a report that Lohan is so broke she can’t pay $8,000 in rent – and money woes aren’t the extent of her problems, either. Lindsay’s probation, related to her shoplifting conviction, was formally revoked last Wednesday morning, after she was charged with lying to cops after her June car crash. “Prosecutors are going after Lindsay with a vengeance this time because of her flagrant disregard for the law,” the source previously said of the 26-year-old actress. “The LA City Attorney’s office will present evidence to Commissioner Jane Godfrey that Lindsay has a long storied history of lying to cops and of general lack of respect.” Lindsay’s agents and managers “just wish she would have taken these steps to take accountability for her life before her back was against the wall. Lindsay is her own worst enemy.” Her spiritual adviser will pen a letter urging a judge to sentence her to counseling instead of eight months in jail … but if she can’t pay for it, what’s the point? Jail’s rent free, as far as we know. Taxpayer dollars at work, babe! Lindsay Lohan: Lock ‘er up?   Yes, that train wreck brat will never learn otherwise! No, quit trying to make an example out of her, haters! View Poll »

Britney Split Rumors: Jason Trawick to Dump Spears?

Rumors of a Britney Spears and Jason Trawick split have been lingering for months, and now it looks like it’s actually a possibility … at least according to Hollyscoop. The celebrity gossip claims that Britney and Jason are about to split … because Jason’s had enough of their relationship … and Spears doesn’t know it yet. A source close to the couple says Jason wants out – and she’s the last to know. “Jason has told Britney’s entire family that he’s planning to leave her, so that Britney will have a support system when he breaks the bad news,” the source claims. Jason is reportedly waiting for The X Factor to end, because he and her family feel she’ll take the news hard, and would rather not have her deal with it while filming. Oddly, he apparently wants to remain her manager after they split. Not sure how Brit would like Jason being on the payroll after he dumps her, but he has been great for her career, and she can’t make these calls anyway, so who knows. Jason Trawick used to be Britney’s agent as well, but when they became a couple, he left his agency in 2011, dropped her as a client, and solely became her manager. A second Britney Spears source denies this, claiming, “I haven’t heard anything about [the split], but I do know they are going on vacation together for the holidays.” So, that brings you up to date. Think it’ll last?   Yes! He’s perfect for her and her kids. No, I just don’t see the connection. View Poll »

Ali Fedotowsky and Roberto Martinez: Back Together?

Former Bachelorette lovebirds Ali Fedotowsky and Roberto Martinez recently split up after an 18-month engagement, but may be back together just like that. They allegedly hooked up at Ashley Hebert’s wedding. Ashley Hebert and J.P. Rosenbaum married in Pasadena, Calif. on December 1, with fellow reality stars Ali and Roberto in attendance, among many others. One witness says the attractive two were “inseparable.” Indeed, Roberto moved tables just to sit next to Ali. “They started talking again a month ago,” a pal says. Ali Fedotowsky and Roberto Martinez split in November 2011; the duo first connected on the sixth season of The Bachelorette in 2010, with him winning. They allegedly left together and hooked up that night, although even if that’s true, it doesn’t necessarily mean a reconciliation is in the future for them. Says the source, “Chances of them getting back together are slim, but they had a great time that night.” Guess sometimes, one last hurrah is all you need.

Born This Way: Scientists Claim Homosexuality Can Be Hereditary “Gayness Can Be Passed From Mother To Son”

Are people born gay?? Scientists Uncover Possible Source Of Homosexuality Ever wonder why some lesbians like to dress like men? Or why some gay men love wigs, makeup and high heels? Well, scientists claim the answer may lie answer in the genetics, or how the expression genes are controlled by “temporary switches” known as epi-marks… Via NY Daily News reports: “Transmission of sexually antagonistic epi-marks between generations is the most plausible evolutionary mechanism of the phenomenon of human homosexuality,” Sergey Gavrilets, the study’s co-author, said in a release. Researchers have long believed that sexual orientation had some hereditary component. However, scientists say that homosexuality, in terms of evolution, cannot be solely genetic, because the trait would eventually disappear given that homosexuals aren’t expected to reproduce. Epi-marks, on the other hand, are thought to have an evolutionary advantage that keeps them within the population. For instance, some epi-marks work to protect a female fetus from becoming too masculine if testosterone spikes in late pregnancy. “These epi-marks protect fathers and mothers from excess or underexposure to testosterone — when they carry over to opposite-sex offspring, it can cause the masculinization of females or the feminization of males,” William Rice, the study’s lead author, told U.S. News & World Report. Rice said that epi-marks are “highly variable” and only those that are especially strong would potentially lead to homosexual children. The evolutionary biologist said that while his theory still needs to be tested on parents and their children, it is the most plausible explanation so far. Basically sex-specific epi-marks are usually “erased” from generation to generation. So, a mother’s gender specific characteristics can be passed to a son. Thus, his love for everything pink, glittery and attached to a peen. What do you think of this latest findings? Are people really born gay?
