It’s the season finale of The Real Housewives of New Jersey and it’s a “Strip Down Memory Lane” but whose memory is telling the truth? We recap all of the lies, spies, and hidden texting in our THG +/- review. Angelo, the former strip club manager now supposed spa owner is back and not only is this guy sleazy, he’s a horrible actor. Minus 10 . I love Kathy’s reaction to the guy. She thinks he’s just some sleazeball hitting on Melissa. Well, she’s half right. Then she rolls her eyes when she quips, “We’re all married here. Move along.” Plus 8 . Somehow once Kim D takes the mic at her fashion show she manages to look even trashier. I wouldn’t have thought that possible. Minus 12. Last week I was almost willing to give Teresa the benefit of the doubt. Maybe this was all Kim D’s doing and Teresa was just being used. Then Teresa opened her mouth and looked guiltier with every word she spoke. If Teresa didn’t want any trouble she would have kept her mouth shut. Instead she followed Melissa into the ladies room and confronted her, asking her about Angelo. Minus 13 . I smell a pink sequined rat. Melissa swears she only bartended for the guy and that it was before she ever met Joe. Again Teresa shows her true colors when Melissa says she was teaching second grade when she met her husband. Teresa’s response, I don’t know what you were doing at night . Minus 15. Wow! Who says that? Angelo makes the rounds at Posche telling anyone who will listen that Melissa danced at his club and that Teresa was in on the set up. Then once word gets out that Melissa has called her husband, the Mr. Clean look a like disappears and Teresa bolts through the room trying to do damage control. Back at the booth, everyone’s trying to figure out what the heck is going on as they text one another under the table. Plus 10 to Kathy who decides she’d rather just sit there and eat her salad. Jacqueline gets a text from a friend that says this set up has been weeks in the making. She shows it to Lauren who shows it to Caroline who shows it to Melissa. Minus 7 . This is beginning to feel like a high tech version of telephone. As Kathy says, anyone who is a real friend to Melissa wouldn’t care whether she danced for this guy ten years ago or not. Teresa seems the only one obsessed with the idea. Which leads to the question… why now ? Everything was going so well. Is trying to prove that Melissa has a sordid past worth betraying her brother? Minus 15 . It seems so. Perhaps she just didn’t think this through because the thought of her brother getting involved seems to shock her. Then again, Teresa’s not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed. Again, Kathy pegs it when she says that whether or not Teresa was involved in the set up, she certainly didn’t do anything to stop it. The saddest part may be when Teresa turns on Jacqueline. When she tries to throw all of the blame for this debacle on her, you can see how crushed Jacqueline is. Then, on camera, she digs up her friends supposed stripper past. Teresa knows no shame. Minus 13 . On the up side, I think Jacqueline is finally done with Teresa. Plus 20. Then all of sudden Kim D. has all of these friends of hers who mysteriously come forward to swear they knew Melissa was a stripper all along. Of course Kim D is despicable trash so consider the source. At the end of the show we find out the following… Caroline has not spoken to Teresa since the last reunion show. No surprise there. Lauren got Lap-Band surgery and Cafface is thriving. Albie and LIndsey are no longer and item. Minus 10 . That’s a shame. They both looked happy. Kathy’s homemade cannoli kit comes out this year. Plus 5 . I might actually buy one. Victoria’s staying home. Dorm rooms weren’t for her. Kathy’s still talking to Teresa..through texts. Why bother? Melissa and Joe are selling the house to get farther away from Teresa. I wonder how far they’re willing to go. Teresa wrote another book, “Fabulicious! Fast & Fit.” It’s a NYT best seller. Minus 7 . Who buys these things? Joe is still awaiting trial. Teresa hasn’t seen her brother since the Posche Fashion Show. Teresa apologized to her fellow cast mates. Of course she did it in a magazine…and she excluded Kathy once again. So funny Plus 11 . Jacqueline hasn’t spoken to Teresa since this episode. Plus 15 . Good for her. Now we have to tune in next week to see who will actually show up for the reunion. Episode total = -33! Season total = -438!
Looks like Jesus Jugs is on her way out. Alexis Bellino is on the verge of leaving The Real Housewives of Orange County , according to a new report in Us Weekly (which cites an anonymous source). After three seasons, “Alexis was really tired of being bullied and chose home and family life over celebrity,” the insider explains of Alexis’ decision to stop filming . While she is said to have begun contract negotiations with Bravo, the former Housewife “wanted to go back to a simple life in Orange County,” the source adds. In July, Alexis, 35, and her husband, Jim Bellino, decried the verbal bullying and attacks they say they suffered from the RHOC cast, particularly Tamra Barney. The couple has even threatened to sue Barney for ridiculing their faith. During Season 7, Alexis butted heads with Barney, Gretchen Rossi and Heather Dubrow. They didn’t like her much. “Phony-Gate” became a major storyline. Regarding the mother of James, 5, and 4-year-olds Melania and Mackenna, Bravo says “we have not made any decisions about a Season 8 pick up or casting.” Would you want to see Alexis Bellino back on RHOC?
Are athletes becoming more comfortable with their sexuality ? Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo is going “full steam ahead” after his battle with Maryland legislator C. Emmett Burns Jr., who last week wrote a letter calling on the team’s owner to silence Ayanbadejo regarding his public advocacy of gay marriage , only to back down amid a national uproar: As a pro-football player with an international platform, Ayanbadejo has been promoting LGBT equality for several years, working with Equality Maryland. In the wake of the confrontation with Burns, he sees a marked difference in the response to his advocacy from just five years ago, noting how he used to experience jabs from teammates and some fans. “In years past it would be just random people, who would write ignorant things [in response to my advocacy],” he said. “I haven’t had a single negative comment from any of my teammates or anybody around the NFL [after this episode], whereas in the past it was a completely different story. The fans — people all over the country, all over the world — have just invigorated me to fight even harder for marriage equality. I’ve been energized from the outpouring from all over the world. Maybe around 20 people — players, people in the building, whether it be a secretary or a janitor, or even coaches — have come up to me and given me a high-five.” “Whether it was women’s rights or interracial marriage or civil rights, whatever it was, it’s all led to where we are today,” he continued. “And now it’s gay rights. And it’s all the same issue even though they’re all different things. They’re all predicated on equality and treating people fairly. So I just see it from that standpoint. I see it a little bit broader than everybody else, but there’s always been someone that’s been discriminated against. And we’re just trying to tackle one issue at a time. Right now it’s the time for gay rights and it’s time for them to be treated equally and for everybody be treated fairly, in the name of love.” Life occasionally hands people a platform from which to speak, and it’s telling to note how he’s chosen to use the platform he has earned. He decided to stand up for other people, when, let’s face it, he didn’t have to do that. Not one person would have criticized him for staying silent about gay civil rights. But he went there, anyway. Macaulay Culkin may not be on drugs, but he is not doing so hot. A friend describes him as depressed, sad, lonely and attempting to recapture his childhood. Weeks after the National Enquirer called Macaulay Culkin a heroin addict and said he was at death’s door, reports say the Home Alone star is very depressed. An insider close to Culkin says he is not doing well and has been attempting to relive his childhood and has been engaging in increasingly strange behavior. That includes hosting costume parties where guests are invited to come dressed as a movie character or dinosaur. “He likes to live as a child ,” says the source. “Growing up has not been good to Macaulay.” A former colleague says Culkin is a “sad and lonely figure,” and attributes his depression to his inability to land roles in recent years; he last acted in 2010. The actor denies he’s on drugs , but the Enquirer stood by its initial shocking story and encouraged the 32-year-old actor to seek help for his problems. In February, his reps also denied allegations that the actor was gravely ill after gaunt photos of Culkin emerged. He looks healthier in recent months, though. In fact, Culkin has been working on several paintings which he’ll be exhibiting this week, and has been using his New York apartment as a studio. So that’s good. As Paul Thomas Anderson painstakingly rolls out his latest labor of love, The Master — next stop, New York City, with a 70-mm screening at Manhattan’s Ziegfeld Theater on Tuesday night — another Paul Anderson with different middle initials — W.S. — is preparing to infect the worldwide box office like a zombie virus on Friday with Resident Evil: Retribution . It’s the latest chapter in the movie franchise based on the blockbuster game franchise, which will also spawn a new installment, Resident Evil 6 on Oct. 6. Guess which film will fare better critically? The Resident Evil movies are the most mocked video-game movies because they’re also the most popular. Four movies earning almost half a billion dollars over budget usually wins most logical arguments when it comes to this subject. Unfortunately, heated Internet arguments have little to do with logic or reality — particularly if you take into account the graph I’ve prepared using data from Metacritic.com and Box Office Mojo.com . You’ll find it after the jump, but the gist is that when it comes to box-office revenues, Metacritic reviews are about as essential as unicorn insurance. Wait a minute….So Internet whiners aren’t the entire world? The exponential growth in Resident Evil profits is a clear sign that Constantin Films, the producer behind the franchise, is doing something right. As an unabashed fan of movies, I count three: For many kids this was worse than Bambi’s mother dying. 1. Streamline the Core Plot: Some games are so impossible to convert that the process drives screenwriters completely insane, as proven by Mario Bros. Resident Evil is not one of those games. The plot is good guys versus evil zombie corporation, and the movies aced it. The most common complaint is that the movies don’t follow the plots of the games, but all the producers did was cut the repetitive rubbish which stretched what amounts to a 90-minute story into more than 12 hours of gameplay. In the Resident Evil games, the sinister Umbrella Corporation’s two most loathsome products were voracious zombies and utterly unbreakable doors. The movies wisely dropped the the latter. 2. Jettison Irrelevant Sub-Plots: The Resident Evil games have more dubious sub-plots than a soap opera — sub-plots, by the way, that require the brain activity of bracket fungus to grasp. These plot tangents tended to be designed to justify and set up a sequel rather than advance the story at hand. You had characters chasing after their brothers, hunting down rogue mercenaries, searching for missing presidential family members, and in one memorably stupid case, learning that the city was going to descend into zombie hell but patiently waiting until that happened before making an escape. Anderson smartly left most of that crap out of the Resident Evil movies and this ties back in to my first point: The essential conflict of the movies is simple and amounts to: sexy badass Milla Jovovich shoots monsters , which takes the occasionally stupid complexity of the video games and refines it into a concept that is almost as beautiful as the theory of relativity Dressed for a night of clubbing. When the basic gameplay and the basic conflict doesn’t change, you contrive reasons to keep doing the same things over and over. The first Resident Evil game was a mansion full of hallways and a lab; the second, a city with suspiciously narrow hallway-like streets and a lab; a later sequel featured another mansion full of hallways and a lab in Antarctica — which also contained the first mansion! (I am not making that up). One more thing: every lab consists largely of hallways. Another effect is the pointless multiplication of viruses and corporations. At last count, there were nine different viruses and parasites creating the monsters, and since the first t-virus could clearly do anything it wanted in the first game, all this did was give the fan-wiki editors more to edit . Likewise, the Umbrella Corporation has been replaced by WilPharma and then Tricell, which did nothing but allow a graphic designer to bill additional hours by slapping the logos of these new nefarious companies on the exact same Generic Monster Laboratory equipment that Umbrella was using. If you saw a movie sequel in which the names were changed but the plot was identical, well, that would describe just about any horror franchise out there. I’m glad Anderson & Co. didn’t do that. 3. Escalate: The Resident Evil movies went the action movie route, which meant that the stakes had to be escalated with each subsequent sequel. Ditching the game plot allowed for this genuine progression. The first movie was about a secret lab infected with a virus. In the second, it was an entire city. In the the third, the plague had spread around the world. The ante was upped in each case, which was far better than the game’s plot of, “Where’s Wally’s next secret viral base which will blow up at the end of the game?” Behold the exotic hallways of Antarctica The movies’ disconnection from the source material is justified. Players have already seen the game plot, and non-players couldn’t care less about it. If the movies slavishly copied the games, they would amount to glorified extended cut scenes — and many gamers skip those when they’re playing. Complaining that Resident Evil movies don’t follow the original story is like saying Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes movies don’t follow their source material. Translating Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s 19th-Century fiction into movies that won’t bore the hell out of ADD-suffering 21st-Century audiences makes a note-for-note translation impossible. Ritchie recognized this and the results were fun. If the master works of Conan Doyle can be interpreted in this fashion, then it certainly shouldn’t be a problem when you’re dealing with mowing down and blowing up loads of zombies. This week the teen singer/actress has tongues wagging about her doing a little same-sex kissing, and of course everyone is talking about how the timing is perfect because of her new platinum short “boy” haircut. The former “Hannah Montana” star, who recently became engaged to longtime boyfriend Liam Hemsworth of “Hunger Games” fame, is sowing her wild oats before the wedding – by smooching other women. “Miley decided to live a little before she ties the knot,” an insider told The ENQUIRER. “She wants to have some fun and laughs before she gets bogged down with wedding plans.” Miley, 19, was spotted sharing an intimate kiss with an unidentified woman at New York’s trendy club The Darby on Aug. 23 while her 22-year-old fiance was hard at work shooting his new film, “Paranoia,” in Philadelphia. “Miley has always been outspoken over her support of gay rights,” the source continued. “She even sports a small equal sign tattoo on her ring finger to signify her belief that all love is equal. “So it’s certainly not surprising that she’s experimenting with girls before she walks down the aisle.” This isn’t the first time the onetime Disney darling has locked lips with another young lovely. In 2010, she puckered up with a cutie onstage during a performance of “Can’t Be Tamed” at London’s legendary G-A-Y nightclub. At the time, the “Party in the USA” singer defended the kiss by claiming “nothing happened” and there are “more important things in the world” than two girls kissing onstage. But Miley’s behavior was enough for self-professed bi actress Evan Rachel Wood to take notice! After seeing Miley’s new do, Wood tweeted: “I called it! Miley Cyrus is leaning toward gay!” Meanwhile, Miley’s career remains red-hot as she recently inked a deal to appear in a two-part episode of the hit sitcom “Two and a Half Men.” “Miley’s having the time of her life right now,” added the source. “She knows she’ll have to settle down once she and Liam get hitched, but for now she seems to be living by the motto, ‘Girls just want to have fun!’” SMH.
