An experienced umpire died after an “unfortunate accident” when he was struck on the head by a cricket ball during an attempted run out. Alcwyn Jenkins had been a cricket umpire for 25 years. The umpire had his back to fielder Stephen Davies when he threw the ball at the stumps at Swansea’s St. Helen’s ground last July. According to the inquest on the afternoon of July 4, 2009, Mr. Jenkins was umpiring a match between Swansea and Llangennech. Mr. Davies said that it was only after he had thrown the ball when he saw that Alcwyn was in the way. People were shouting but it just happened so quickly. Unfortunately the umpire moved with his back to Stephen so he did not see the ball which had been thrown in his direction and the ball hit the right side of his head. According to Pc Michael Chislett, who investigated his death, there were number of players shouting to warn him. It could either be that he had not heard the warnings, had no enough time to react or had been so professional that he did not want to take his eyes off the stumps. When he collapsed, players and officials quickly rushed to help him but he was then unconscious. He was immediately flown by air ambulance to Swansea’s Morriston Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. A postmortem examination was done and found out that he had died due to head injury.
