Will President Obama’s new education proposal kill Historically Black Colleges? Via The Advocate reports: Some Southern University leaders are concerned that a proposal by President Barack Obama to make community college free will have a negative impact on historically black colleges and universities. Under Obama’s plan, the federal and state governments would cover the cost of community college for two years for qualifying Americans, which he says would strengthen the U.S. workforce. The estimated cost: about $60 billion over 10 years. But Southern system board member Tony Clayton said the plan would funnel students who might otherwise go to HBCUs instead to community colleges. “I think that kills HBCUs,” Clayton said. He said he plans to reach out to Louisiana’s congressional delegation and urge them to oppose Obama’s plan. “We have to send a message to (Obama) that he’s wrong on this,” Clayton said. Southern University System President Ron Mason said he’s also concerned about the proposal and what it could mean for the future of Southern and other HBCUs. In preliminary plans that the Obama administration has unveiled, the federal government would pick up 75 percent of the costs, with the rest left to the states. Students would have to attend community college at least half-time, keep at least a 2.5 GPA and “make steady progress” toward completing their programs, and the colleges themselves would have to ensure their programs are rigorous and are meeting workforce demands. Judging by the colossal ratings for Once Upon a Time’s season premiere last night, audiences are being sucked into the world of Disney’s Frozen once again. Ever since it was announced back in spring that the show would feature storylines based on the animated musical smash, fan interest in OUAT has been at an all-time high. The casting of Georgiana Haig as Queen Elsa in June generated controversy. (Most fans approved, but some had been pushing for Elsa lookalike and Internet celeb Anna Faith Carlson ). But we doubt producers’ decision to cast Tyler Jacob Moore’s as Hans will provoke will be the subject of much debate. Yes, People magazine provided us with our first look at Moore as Hans , and this dude certainly has the right look. It remains to be seen whether Moore will be able to capture Hans’ mix of sleazy charm and barely-contained rage, but we can’t imagine another actor looking more perfectly like the Prince of the Southern Isles made flesh and blood. In addition to the Ice Queen and Hans, the show’s casting directors perfectly nailed the Elsa’s sister, as well her parents King Agdar and Queen Idun – all of whom look pretty much exactly as they did on the big screen. Hopefully, the show’s writers will be able to rise to the occasion as well. Those Frozen fans can be tough to please. At the Southern Illinois State Track Meet over the weekend, 13-year old twins Chloe and Claire Gruenke were both running the 800-meter race when the former felt something pop in her leg and fell down. “I thought oh my goodness what just happened,” Claire told KSDK.com. “I went up to her and I said ‘Chloe are you okay?’ and she was like ‘I don’t know. Something just pulled in my leg.'” Did Claire yell for help and finish on her own? Nope. High School Twin Carries Sister Across Finish Line “I put her on my back, and then I started to jog,” Claire explained. “I got really tired, so I walked the rest and the crowd was just blaring in my ears. That gave me energy to at least finish it.” Immediately prior to the finish line, Claire put her sibling down and they crossed simultaneously. Yes, the sisters finished last. But they really finished first in the eyes of many. “They didn’t win the race, but they won the hearts of everyone in the audience,” their coach, Ted Crail, said, according to the Associated Press. “I’ve been coaching for 20 years. This was the first time I ever had tears in my eyes at one of the meets.” This is our second cool twins story of the week. Via NYPost reports : A Sunday snorkeler off the Southern California coast discovered the body of a modern sea monster, the silvery carcass of an 18-foot-long oarfish. Jasmine Santana, an instructor at the Catalina Island Marine Institute, said she spotted something shimmering in the 30-foot-deep water near Catalina Island, about two dozen miles from land. Santana needed 15 helpers to tote the creature to shore. “She said, ‘I have to drag this thing out of here or nobody will believe me,’” Mark Waddington, a senior captain of the institute’s training ship, told the Associated Press. Oarfish are the longest bony fish in the world, according to the institute. They are likely responsible for legends about sea monsters. But they are rarely seen because they can dive more than 3,000 feet deep. “We’ve never seen a fish this big,” Waddington said. “The last oarfish we saw was three feet long.” The oarfish Santana found – which had eyes the size of silver dollars – is believed to have died of natural causes.
