C ognizant of the lack of support that many Black-owned businesses receive, truck driver Edward Dillard decided to make a concerted effort to support African American-owned restaurants during his coast to coast shifts on the road. However, when the Delaware native would travel through the outskirts of major cities, he found it hard to locate Black-owned restaurants. Determined to come up with a solution to this dilemma and give African American-owned establishments exposure, he launched a platform called Eat Black Owned ; a national directory of Black-owned restaurants. There is power that lies in the Black dollar. Black buying power is worth $1.2 trillion and that number is expected to grow to $2 trillion by the year 2020. However, the life span of a dollar within the Black community only lasts for six hours. After learning about these statistics, Dillard’s mission to support local Black-owned businesses became bigger than himself and he began laying the foundation for Eat Black Owned to empower other individuals to spend their dollars at Black restaurants. “The dollar does not circulate in the Black community long at all. I think our community needs to do more to lift ourselves up,” he told NewsOne. “I hope individuals will use this site and find a restaurant to patronize that they never knew about. We spend our money with other communities and rarely ever with our own. If there were more resources for us to locate Black-owned businesses, then I believe more people would support them.” After five months of research, he compiled a list of over 2,000 restaurants and launched the website in June. Through the site, users can locate Black-owned eateries that are near their geographic location. The site allows restaurant owners and customers to add listings and Dillard created a section for individuals to leave reviews. He specifically wanted to highlight places that were located outside of major cities. Dillard also wanted to ensure that his site was inclusive of different types of businesses. He includes mom-and-pop eateries and restaurants owned by Black celebrities. “I prefer mom-and-pop restaurants because I believe they put more TLC into their food and customer service,” he said. For Dillard, the positive feedback has been rewarding. As far as what’s on the horizon for Eat Black Owned, Dillard hopes to turn it into an app. He also plans on transforming the platform into a hub for content related to the Black culinary experience and will feature recipes posted by users. Platforms like Dillard’s are needed. Research shows that Black-owned restaurants grew by 49 percent between the years 2007 to 2012. Beloved Bachelor in Paradise alum Demi Burnett faced a torrent of biphobia for her relationship with Kristian Haggerty . Though the two are now engaged, they are now facing scrutiny from fans who think that their relationship was just for show. Have they broken up already? Demi is speaking out about these rumors. Demi Burnett was at, of all things, a Dick’s Sporting Goods fashion show this week, where she spoke to Us Weekly . And she specifically addressed the rumors that she and Kristian are spending so much time apart that they appear to have broken up. “Every relationship is different,” Demi emphasizes. “And it’s like — I mean in the most respectful way — it’s nobody’s business how our relationship works,” she correctly states. Demi explains: “We both have so much going on right now.” “She’s in Florida, I’m in New York,” Demi notes. But being in separate states is just a reality for two busy professionals with their own lives. “But,” she notes. “We do spend time together.” “Just because we don’t broadcast it,” Demi states. “Doesn’t mean that we’re not together.” That makes a world of sense. Relationships don’t need performative affection every single day for the benefit of fans. They need real affection. “We’re not too far apart,” Demi notes. Florida may exist on another, chaotic plane of existence, but states on the east coast aren’t all that far apart. And they’re in the same time zone. “I think it’s important to kind of have our space,” she expresses wisely. Demi says that it’s important “just so, you know, we can develop a normal, very solid, steady relationship.” Jumping into buying a house together can be a huge mistake. Kristian and Demi are engaged, but she makes it clear that they have not taken the dive into wedding planning — not yet. “If you just jump into it and just rush everything, for me personally, that’s not how I could have a successful relationship,” Demi states. She made that clear in Paradise, and she’s absolutely right. “I have to definitely take it at a steady pace,” she expresses. She confirms that, despite their engagement: “We’re definitely just dating right now.” “There’s so much going on for both of us,” Demi continues. She says: “That it’s like, ‘Oh, planning a wedding right now just sounds so intense.’” One of the most stressful human undertakings. “So we’re definitely taking it slow,” Demi concludes. “And just enjoying our time together.” That sounds both healthy and wise! So why did they get engaged if they’re still getting a hang on dating each other? Well … probably because ABC asked them to. What we imagine is that producers called Demi to invite her to Paradise, and she was like “well, actually, I’m in a solid relationship with my girlfriend.” And producers, maybe recognizing that their entire franchise is too overwhelmingly heterosexual, saw an opportunity. They likely enticed Demi to appear on the show and invited Kristian, that way they could have some much-needed bi representation. Last week, Larissa Lima snapped a selfie with Corey Rathgeber . In the aftermath, Larissa and Evelin Villegas went to war . It got very, very ugly. Things appeared to calm down a little. As Leida Margaretha (of all people!) suggested, it was mostly a misunderstanding. This week, Larissa spoke out in order to clear the air about her intense, vicious feud with Evelin. “Hey, guys, I would like to clarify the recent events,” Larissa wrote on Instagram. “As everyone knows, Corey [likes] to travel and meet up with other cast members,” she noted. Larissa continued, stating the obvious: “and we met.” It was an innocent date, which she explains in detail. Funny — when Corey met with David and Annie, we didn’t see thousands of fans accusing them of having a threesome. Larissa even furnished details of the date for the curious. “We had drinks, we played slot machine games, and talked a lot about life,” she recalled. “Nothing happened,” she confirmed. “Not even a kiss.” “I posted our picture because it was an innocent date,” Larissa emphasized. “And we are both adults.” So whatever has been going down with Corey and Evelin and their strained relationship, Larissa was not coming between them. Larissa’s initial post was simply of having bumped into Corey, of course. She changed her tune, however, when Evelin went on Instagram Live and called her “a frickin’ whore.” In response, Larissa stated that Evelin “should be more respectful toward other women.” That’s true. Also, towards sex workers. “Whore” should really drop out of use. Use “slut” as a compliment or not at all, and leave “whore” for sex workers to use if they so choose. “If she believes she is in a relationship, she should talk to her man to find out what happened,” Larissa suggested. She wrote: “instead of [making] assumptions about someone she does not even know well.” “I gave her advice and support when she [came] crying out,” Larissa revealed. Evelin had evidently been “asking me how [to] deal with haters in my [direct messages].” Both women were absolutely bombarded with hate for months from 90 Day Fiance fans who should know better. “Corey and I were not trying to ‘announce’ a relationship for publicity,” Larissa emphasized to fans, followers, and Evelin. “I’m still single and ready to find my king,” she stated. Well, Larissa is the self-styled “Queen,” so it’s natural that she’d be looking for a king. “Do you want [a] war? Let’s go to war,” she wrote to Evelin specifically. Let’s clarify who you are, OK.” Larissa strongly advised: “Deal with your problems with your man without [getting] me involved.” The feud went above and beyond name-calling, to the point where Larissa began publishing Corey’s private text messages. On the one hand, it could have been worse — he wasn’t sending her nudes or sexting her or whatever. On the other hand, he did tell Larissa a lot of Evelin’s private business, from her visa struggles to their relationship problems. Evelin was royally furious over that. If she and Corey can’t keep it together for a few weeks of turmoil, maybe they’re really not meant to be. That’s not Larissa’s fault. According to The Smoking Gun , a 19-year-old Memphis boy has been arrested for forcibly reaching into his grandmother’s panties and stealing $10. You read every single word of that correctly. Jared Otte’s grandmother refused to give him the money he was demanding, so Jared pushed her down on the bed, held her down, raiser her dress and removed $10 from her undergarments according to the police report. The elderly woman was bruised during the struggle. Jared has been charged with felony robbery and is being held on $10,000 bail. People. Ain’t S#!T.

Today, five members of the Trinitarios gang were handed lengthy prison sentences for the murder of Lesandro “Junior” Guzman-Feliz , the 15-year-old who was attacked outside of a bodega in the Bronx back in 2018. According to the reports from the New York Times , 19-year-old Manuel Rivera was sentenced to 23 years to life prison, while his co-defendants—Antonio Rodriguez Hernandez Santiago, 25; Jose Muniz, 23; and Elvin Garcia, 25—all received 25 years to life. 25-year-old Jonaiki Martinez Estrella was handed the heaviest sentence (life in prison without parole) as the one who allegedly plunged a knife into Guzman-Feliz’s neck and ultimately killed him. The announcement of these sentences comes nearly four months after the five gang members were found guilty of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, second-degree conspiracy, and second-degree gang assault. As of now, according to reports from The Times , eight other defendants are still awaiting trial. On June 20, 2018, surveillance video captured Feliz-Guzman running into a bodega in the Bronx. He was followed by five men who ended up dragged him out of the shop and onto to the sidewalk, where others were waiting. Security cameras from nearby buildings captured them attacking the 15-year-old, stabbing him with small knives and machetes. After the gang members fled the scene, Junior managed to get to the nearby St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead only minutes after arriving. According to law enforcement, the attackers had mistaken Feliz-Guzman for a rival gang member.
