Report: After Big Opening, Now We Might Get a PG-13 Bully

So did all that MPAA ratings nonsense and media outcry pay off for Bully ? What do you think? Lee Hirsch ‘s film achieved the year’s best documentary opening to date with $115,000 on five screens in New York and Los Angeles — a $23,000-per-theater average that amounted to the best of the week by nearly $10,000 over The Hunger Games . But now that The Weinstein Company has to take its unrated baby out of the doc-friendly megamarkets and into the mainstream wilds, a new report suggests that Harvey Weinstein may be preparing to make the cuts required for a PG-13. Surprise! Per the LAT : The new cut of the teen-bullying film, which would minimize in some manner the profanities featured in a controversial schoolbus scene, would hit theaters April 13, when the movie widens to 25 markets, and allow children of any age to see it without adult accompaniment. The film, which centers on five families affected by teen bullying, plays in limited release in Los Angeles and New York this weekend. The Weinstein Co. denied that changes were being made now but allowed for the possibility in the coming weeks. “At this time, there are no plans to change the film for a PG-13,” Stephen Bruno, the company’s head of marketing, told 24 Frames on Friday. “We are in constant conversation with the MPAA and hope a compromise can be reached.” The MPAA has been steadfast that the existing cut wll not be given anything lower than an R. Hmm. Where have we seen this before? Oh, right . Also from the LAT : “I did that on The King’s Speech , and Colin and Tom killed me for it,” Weinstein said, referring to a new PG-13 cut for the 2011 Oscar winner, and to star Colin Firth and director Tom Hooper’s criticism of the move. That was another April gambit, for the record — after the R-rated Speech was already out of theaters with $134 million in its pocket. A little more than two months and $3 million later , kids didn’t want to see that either. Anyway, if you need any more evidence that all this “controversy” is just another hustle, then I can’t help you. [ LAT ] Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Must Be Nice: Barack Obama’s Baller Buddies Tyler Perry And Oprah Help Him Raise $5 Milli In ATL And Chi-Town

It really pays to have friends in high places. Just ask President Obama , who raised several million dollars during campaign stops in Illinois and Georgia Friday with help from celebrity friends Oprah and Tyler Perry. President Barack Obama, turning full attention to his re-election campaign, aimed to raise more than $5 million today with fundraisers in his adopted hometown of Chicago and then Atlanta, where Oprah Winfrey joined with other wealthy donors. Obama arrived in Chicago as two of the Republicans who want to challenge him in November, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum, also had Illinois campaign events before the state’s March 20 presidential primary. His stops included dinner for about 40 people, including Winfrey, at the home of actor and film producer Tyler Perry. There, Obama said of his presidency: “This is not a three-year project. This is an eight-year project,” prompting applause. The first of Obama’s five stops was at the Palmer House Hilton Hotel in Chicago, where about 600 people paid $2,500 a piece to watch the campaign film and listen to the president. Without naming his would-be opponents, Obama said the state has “guests this week,” referring to the campaigning leading up to the primary. “Welcome to the Land of Lincoln,” Obama said. Taking an indirect dig at his rivals, he said that he hoped “maybe some Lincoln will rub off on them while they are here,” and told the audience to prepare for “an avalanche of attack ads.” The state’s Republican Party chairman, Pat Brady, criticized Obama for concentrating on his campaign. “After three years of failed policies, broken promises and a seemingly endless supply of empty rhetoric, it is abundantly clear that President Obama has given up on governing and is only concerned about campaigning to save his own job,” Brady said in an e-mailed statement. After the speech, the president held a closed discussion with about 60 supporters who donated at least $10,000 each. In Atlanta, Obama began his fundraising at a private residence where 75 people paid $10,000 each to attend. He then greeted 1,000 supporters at Perry’s studios, an event that included a musical performance by Cee Lo Green. Most of the tickets started at $500 with a smaller number sold at $250, according to the campaign. At the first Atlanta stop, Obama jabbed at the Republicans. “Their basic vision is, ‘You know what? I’ve got mine,’” he said. “And that’s why the other side really doesn’t talk about issues.” Obama capped the day at Perry’s house. Tickets to that cost $35,800. Perry gave $30,400 on May 30, 2009, to the Democratic National Committee and $4,600 Sept. 12, 2007, to Obama’s first presidential campaign, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks contributions. The money raised today goes to the Obama Victory Fund, a joint account for the president’s campaign organization and the Democratic National Committee. Obama raised $140 million for his re-election campaign through the end of January, Federal Election Commission reports show. Looks like the Obama 2012 campaign is on and poppin’. Meryl Streep Wins Best Actress For ‘The Iron Lady’

Legendary actress wins third Oscar in upset victory over front-runner Viola Davis By John Mitchell Meryl Streep wins at the 84th annual Academy Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images In a surprise that clearly shocked even her, acting legend Meryl Streep won the Best Actress Academy Award on Sunday (February 26) for her performance as Margaret Thatcher in “The Iron Lady.” It’s Streep’s third Oscar; she won in 1979 for her supporting turn in “Kramer vs. Kramer” and for Best Actress in 1983 for “Sophie’s Choice.” Her nomination for “The Iron Lady” was her 17th, the most of any actor in film history. She’s received 13 nominations in the 29 years since her last win. “When they called my name, I had this feeling I could hear half of America going, ‘Oh no, come on. Her? Again?’ But, whatever,” Streep joked from the podium. In the lead-up to the awards, the race seemed to be a two-way contest between Golden Globe winner Streep and Davis, who took home the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actress. But Davis was easily the front-runner. Her film, “The Help,” was by far the most successful of all the films nominated in the Best Actress category, and she was the only contender whose film was also nominated for Best Picture. Streep even embraced her former co-star Davis on her way to the podium. The two were both nominated — Streep for Best Actress and Davis for Supporting Actress — for their turns in 2008’s “Doubt.” “First, I’m going to thank Don, because when you thank your husband at the end of the speech, they play him out with the music, and I want him to know that everything I value most in our lives, you’ve given me,” a teary-eyed Streep said. She also lavished praise on longtime friend and makeup artist Roy Helland, whom she worked with on her very first play when she moved to New York City to be an actress in the 1970s. They first worked together on the big screen in “Sophie’s Choice” and have since collaborated on “every single movie in between.” Helland scored his first Oscar for his work on “The Iron Lady.” Colin Firth, last year’s Best Actor winner for “The King’s Speech” and Streep’s co-star in the box-office hit “Mama Mia!,” presented the actress with the award. The actress dedicated much of her speech to her many colleagues in the room. “I really understand I’ll never be up here again,” Streep said. “I really want to thank all my colleagues, all my friends. I look out here and, you know, I see my life before my eyes. My old friends, my new friends. And really, this is such a great honor, but the thing that counts the most with me is the friendships and the love and the sheer joy we have shared making movies together, my friends. Thank you, all of you, departed and here, for this inexplicably wonderful career.” The MTV Movies team has the 2012 Oscars covered! Oscars 2012: Last Year’s Awards-Night Headlines

Billy Crystal’s return as host foreshadowed at 2011 Academy Awards. By Kevin P. Sullivan Billy Crystal at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images It certainly doesn’t feel like it’s been that long, but it was a year ago that “The King’s Speech” won top honors at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards . As we head into the 2012 Oscars on Sunday, it’s an appropriate time to look back on last year’s winners that surprised, moments that shocked and snubs we’re still not quite over yet. Anne and James In an attempt to appeal to a younger demographic, the Academy enlisted the help of Anne Hathaway and James Franco and “youth-oriented” segments including an Auto-Tuning of some of the year’s biggest movies. The result was a confusing three hours of underwhelming laughs and jokes that fell mostly flat. Afterward, blame flew both ways, but it seems unlikely that either will host again. Kirk Douglas, Show Stealer Leave it to a 94-year-old to show all the kids how it’s done. With more energy than the two hosts combined, Douglas won over the audiences in the Kodak Theatre and at home, overtly hitting on Hathaway and making sweeping generalizations about Australians and Brits. The King’s Night Despite hanging in second behind “The Social Network” for most of the awards-season love leading up to the Oscars, “The King’s Speech” came from behind to win three of the top categories: Best Picture, Actor and Director. Colin Firth locked up his award months in advance by sweeping the earlier ceremonies, but the race for picture and director came down to Oscar night, ending with Tom Hooper’s controversial win over David Fincher. The Dark Knight Rises His victory for Best Supporting Actor might not have come as a surprise, but Christian Bale’s tough-guy image was nowhere to be found. The actor sincerely thanked his wife and daughter after accepting the prize for “The Fighter.” Not only was he happy, but he even made fun of himself and his previous bouts with bad language. Billy Crystal’s Standing Ovation In the evening’s most-apparent act of foreshadowing, Billy Crystal took the stage to honor former Oscar host Bob Hope, and the audience welcomed him with a standing ovation. It wasn’t long after that talk of bringing Crystal back to host started, setting up the Oscar night we’re now anticipating. The MTV Movies team has the 2012 Oscars covered!
