Hampton University Marching Band To Perform In Rome

H ampton University’s marching band will be taking their talents to Rome in 2020. According to Wavy News , the band has been enlisted to perform in the Rome New Year’s Parade; making the school the first historically Black college or university to do so. The event is a cumulative celebration of the World Day of Peace and the Pope’s blessing for the New Year. The band will also have the opportunity to perform for local communities during their time in Italy. “This wonderful opportunity will put Hampton University on an international spotlight and bring some attention to what we’re doing with the band at Hampton. Over the last year, we have been focusing on recruiting talented musicians, dancers, color guard and majorettes. Our mission is not just to build better band students, but to shape and mold students so that they are academically proficient and have high moral character,” band director Dr. Thomas Jones said in a statement released by the university. “This trip validates what we’re doing. The strength of the program is growing. Traveling is a great incentive for new and current students and we are really looking forward to this exciting journey.” Hampton University President Dr. William R. Harvey echoed his sentiments, adding that the band continues to “uphold the standard of excellence as being one of the best marching bands in the nation.” News about the band performing in Italy comes on the heels of their performance in the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, California. The HBCU has had a few firsts over the past few months. In November, Hampton University made history by becoming the first historically Black college and university to add a women’s varsity triathlon team to their list of sports programs. R.I.P: UC Berkeley Football Star Bryce Turner Dies During Work Out Session At Just 19 Years Old

Source: icon sportswire / Getty It’s a sad day at at UC Berkeley after one of their star football players passed away. 19-year old Bryce Turner died on Saturday following a ‘medical emergency’ during a non-team workout last week. Reports say that the sophomore cornerback was hospitalized near his Lakewood, California home on December 30, but neither his family or UC Berkeley has disclosed his cause of death. Sources say that Turner collapsed and fell into a coma while he was in the hospital. Cal athletic director Jim Knowlton did release a statement, saying, “No words can accurately describe the pain we feel in our hearts right now. We’ll always remember Bryce and how he impacted all of us with Cal football.” Today, we lost a beloved member of our #CalFamily . Rest in Peace Bryce Turner. On Thursday, the famous wide receiver pledged to donate his playoff paycheck to the family of the late Jazmine Barnes, the 7-year-old who was killed in a drive-by shooting in Texas. Hopkins tweeted, “When I see Jazmine Barnes’ face, I see my own daughter. I’m pledging my playoff check this week to help her family with funeral costs. On Saturday, I will be playing in your honor, Jazmine.” When I see Jazmine Barnes' face, I see my own daughter. Lee Merritt are offering a $100,000 reward anyone with more information on the gunman.

Today, one of their most recent suspects was allowed to walk away from his alleged crime unscathed. According to ESPN , San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster had the domestic violence against him dropped the State Attorney for lack of evidence. Prosecutors concluded there was insufficient evidence to file charges against Foster after “a meticulous review of the facts of the case,” said Estella Gray, director of communications for the State Attorney’s Office. Adonte Pointer, Attorney for the victim, Elissa Ennis, didn’t mince words in response to the State Attorney’s decision. “We’re disappointed. The prosecutor’s choice is yet another slap in the face to Miss Ennis, just like the one Mr. Foster gave her in Tampa,” Ennis’ attorney, Adante Pointer, told ABC News. “Elissa Ennis was fully ready to participate and hold him accountable. This is not a situation where she recanted, nor that the prosecutor had new evidence that it didn’t happen.” Just so that we’re all clear about what exactly Reuben was charged with… Tampa police said Foster and Ennis were involved in a verbal altercation and that “Foster slapped her phone out of her hand, pushed her in the chest area, and slapped her with an open hand on the left side of her face.” Police said a 1-inch scratch was observed on her left collarbone. This incident followed a February 2018 arrest where Reuben was suspected of domestic violence and weapons possession. Charges were dropped when Elissa recanted her initial testimony that Reuben hit her. She then said the recant was lie during an interview on GMA. A “love” lie. Scot. Free.

Gene Okerlund Dies; Iconic WWE Announcer Was 76

We have our first major celebrity death of 2019. According to the WWE, beloved announcer “Mean” Gene Okerlund is no longer with us. The legendary brodcaster, who conducted some of the best-known interviews in company history with such stalwarts as Hulk Hogan and Randy “Macho Man” Savage, was 76 years old. In its statement, the WWE did not say exactly when or how Okerlund passed away, simply writing as a tribute: “WWE is saddened to learn that WWE Hall of Famer Gene Okerlund, the most recognizable interviewer in sports-entertainment history, has passed away at age 76.” Okerlund was given his nickname by the former Minnesota Governor Jesse “The Body” Ventura, who was also an announcer with the organization before getting into politics. He got his start at Omaha radio station KOIL before moving to Minneapolis, where he worked for a local TV station and eventually found work with the WWE in 1983. Okerlund actually performed the National Anthem at the first WrestleMania in 1985 and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2006. His last appeared on Monday Night Raw took place in January of 2018, during which time he interviewed AJ Styles. As news of Okerlund’s death spread around the Internet, numerous stars (past and present) sent along their tributes and best wishes. A few notable examples: Triple H :  A voice and sound track to an entire era of our industry. He was the star of some of @WWE’s most memorable segments. “Mean Gene” was beloved by all who got to work with him. Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.
