Johnny Depp, The Black Keys Perform Live at MTV Movie Awards

Johnny Depp is no longer one of the coolest men alive. He is officially THE coolest man alive. At the MTV Movie Awards last night, he was not only handed the Generation Award, but joined The Black Keys live onstage for special performances of “Gold on the Ceiling” and “Lonely Boy.” You may now add rock star to his resume: The Black Keys – Gold on the Ceiling (Ft. Johnny Depp) The often-animated Depp maintained a straight face through the song, letting singer Dan Auerbach and guitarist Patrick Carney soak up the spotlight. It was an awesome moment … so much so that host Russell Brand had to take a break from making penis jokes to acknowledge it. Not a small feat. Depp is far from a novice, however. A fairly accomplished musician, he’s collaborated with everyone from Oasis to Alice Cooper over the past 25 years. Still, this ranks up there with the Dark Shadows star’s top moments, we’re guessing. Certainly for fans, his cool quotient was never been higher.

‘Dark Knight Rises’ And The Most Epic Movie Awards Reveals Ever!

UNIVERSAL CITY, California — “The Dark Knight Rises” is still over a month away from hitting theaters, but you’ll get a brand-new look at the hotly awaited superhero flick this Sunday during the 2012 MTV Movie Awards . We’re presenting exclusive footage from the film during the show, though the specifics remain under wraps — exactly as the mysterious Batman would want it. “I was put in a room, the door was locked, I was handcuffed, I had a bag over my head, the bag was revealed, they pressed play on the DVD, and I’m sworn to secrecy — but I’m telling you, it’s good,” Movie Awards director Hamish Hamilton told MTV News when we asked him about the “Dark Knight” footage. As we said: mysterious — but presumably awesome. Indeed, if Movie Awards history tells us anything, the “Dark Knight Rises” footage will be a beautiful sight to behold. Our annual awards show has a strong track record when it comes to rewarding viewers and attendees with cool, exclusive sneak peeks at the coming year’s hottest flicks. From sparkly skinned vampires to robots in disguise, here are five of the all-time best Movie Awards footage premieres: “Twilight” (2008) The first look that started a phenomenon. In 2008, we unveiled the first complete scene from “Twilight,” featuring superstars-in-the-making Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in their most iconic roles to date. It was an action-packed scene, too, ripped straight out of the climax of “Twilight” where Bella is being brutalized by bad vamp James — until a certain pale-skinned mega-hunk flies in to save the day. “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” (2009) Eventual outcome aside, our excitement for “Revenge of the Fallen” ahead of the movie’s release was through the roof. And we were equally psyched to debut an exclusive clip from the second “Transformers” movie at the Movie Awards in 2009, showing Shia LaBeouf’s Sam Witwicky and Megan Fox’s Mikaela Banes fighting for their lives against a Decepticon spy. Just as exciting was our exclusive reveal of the Fallen himself. LaBeouf gave MTV News the exclusive first details about the monstrous villain that more than whetted our appetite for the film to come. “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” (2010) Even if it wasn’t a box-office hit, “Scott Pilgrim” remains one of our favorite flicks from 2010 — and our excitement hit an all-time high when we got a first look at the film at the 2010 Movie Awards. The scene, presented by director Edgar Wright, centered on heroic loser Scott’s battle against the second (and most famous) of Ramona Flowers’ evil exes: Lucas Lee, the skater-boy celebrity played by eventual “Captain America” star Chris Evans. It was our first fully formed look at Wright’s frenetic vision, and the scene shown at the Movie Awards ended up being one of the highlights of the final film. “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” (2011) Just as we were the first to bring the beginning of “Twilight” to the masses, so too were we there for the beginning of the end. The first trailer for the “Twilight” finale’s opening act — “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” — premiered at last year’s Movie Awards and was met with all the fanfare you’d expect. Twilighters oohed and ahhed over the first glimpses of Edward and Bella’s hotly awaited wedding, not to mention gratuitous shots of shirtless Jacob Black. The “Breaking Dawn” trailer was the talk of the Movie Awards that year. Though it had to share some of the spotlight with … “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” (2011) “The boy who lived … come to die.” The wicked Lord Voldemort’s cruel words sent shivers down fans’ spines when a brand-new clip from the “Harry Potter” finale premiered at last year’s Movie Awards. Easily one of the greatest footage reveals in the show’s history, if not the greatest, this look at “Deathly Hallows, Part 2” rocked the “Potter” community to the core for showing such a pivotal scene so far in advance of the film’s theatrical release. Harry’s walk through the Forbidden Forest to meet his maker at the hands of You Know Who stands out as one of the strongest scenes in “Potter” history, and we’re thrilled to have been able to supply fans worldwide with their very first look. The Bachelorette Recap: It’s the Climb

The Bachelorette ran it back with another partially-contrived, unintentionally hilarious, uber-dramatic episode tonight on Memorial Day. And what an episode. Okay, it was pretty run-of-the-mill. But between some vintage Bachelorette cliches, a romantic date with Arie Luyendyk, Jr. , and some man tears, it had its moments. After two weeks of first impressions – some good, some not – the remaining men took another shot tonight, and man oh man, things started to get REAL. Real dumb. Follow this link for a rundown of The Bachelorette spoilers we know now, including the (alleged) final three. Then read on for THG’s +/- Bachelorette recap! After three weeks, it’s still cute that Emily’s a mom. Plus 8 , and Plus 4 more for the prospect of her looking as good as her mom does in her 40s. America’s Got Talent Recap: Tampa or Bust

The America’s Got Talent auditions continued to roll on in Tampa Bay, Florida tonight – and Nick Cannon continued to hog the spotlight. The producers really need to tone down the amount of Nick interacting with the contestants. Seriously. This isn’t Nick Cannon’s Got Friends . Overall, there weren’t a lot of great performances. The weird acts that we watched included a haircutter that tried to be Edward Scissorhands; a stunning but stereotypical hula hooper; an above-average magician; and a “Boss” dance group that may be a little too out there for mainstream America. I don’t think that any of the acts we witnessed here will win this season. Good, Great All That! – Every few years a good clogging team arrives and does decently. Any clogging team should have precision and strong formations and they strong precision but only okay formations. All That! seems to have a bit of an age issue combined with a lack of staging. Some more dynamic music, lighting, stronger formations, and possibly less clothing would make them more Vegas ready and create a winning combination. The Distinguished Men of Brass – I liked the combined singing and marching band segments which gave them the right edge from a drumline. Only a little bit of production value could make them interesting, but the real question is if they could go beyond being a theme park performers. Middle Ground Inspired the Fire – “Urban Glee” had a positive message but I thought the introduction was a bit weak with the solos not having enough power. When they got to the dance section, they were stronger but they lacked precision. There was too much chaos between the dances and the only parts that were synchronized were very basic steps. The group needs more polish to move on. Ulysses – The TV fan in his good luck Cosby-esque sweater had a nice voice and a bit of a niche (TV Theme Songs) and I could see production having a great time with him (See: Kinetic King). Epic Fails NC Bikini Bombshells – Team Jiggles didn’t need to do much to win over the men, but their dancing was awful. You know what they needed? A car to dance on top of. Or hot wings. Tons of hot wings. Michael Griffin – He was hung from the back of a horse. Enough said. He looked like he had a seizure, but he did get out.

Anyway, here are some sweet new postage stamps featuring directors John Huston, Billy Wilder, John Ford and Frank Capra. They are available today for philatelists and the snail-mail enthusiast in your life. (Hint, hint.) Read on for full details via the USPS and its partners at the American Film Institute. [Click above for bigger image] SILVER SPRING, MD — Four extraordinary film directors — Frank Capra, John Ford, John Huston and Billy Wilder — received a stamping ovation today with the issuance of the Great Film Directors First-Class Forever stamps. The dedication took place at the American Film Institute Silver Theatre and Cultural Center where some of their works were showcased. Available nationwide today, the stamps can be purchased online at usps.com/shop, by calling 1-800-STAMP-24 (1-800-782-6724) or by visiting Post Offices. “With these stamps, we’re bringing these filmmakers out from behind their cameras and putting them in the spotlight so that we can learn more about them,” said Samuel Pulcrano, U.S. Postal Service vice president, Corporate Communications in dedicating the stamps. “Movies offer a window into our history and heritage and tell the story of America. Similar to movies, stamps honor our past and celebrate our achievements while encouraging us to learn more about the people, places, and ideas that shape the American experience.” Joining Pulcrano in dedicating the stamps were Jean Picker Firstenberg, American Film Institute president emerita and Postmaster General’s Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee chair; Dr. Bernie Cook, associate dean and director of media studies, Georgetown University; Ray Barry, director, AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center; Silver Spring Postmaster Tony Thompson; and, Arch Campell, ABC television arts and entertainment critic who emceed the event. “The American Film Institute’s mission is to preserve and showcase the cinematic treasures created by these and other directors and it is our hope that these Forever stamps will encourage Americans to see their classic movies that gave us a mirror on our country’s character and values,” said Firstenberg. Following the ceremony, AFI Silver Theatre provided the audience with a screening of Billy Wilder’s The Apartment . The four filmmakers received multiple Academy Award nominations, 15 Oscars, and numerous other honors during their lifetimes. But their greatest accomplishment lies in the vitality and artistry of the stories they told through film. Over a period of approximately 40 years, the quintessentially American filmmakers­ captured multiple contradictions, tensions, dark and light sides in deeply personal interpretations that conveyed the American experience as never before. The stamp art combines a portrait of each director with a scene from one of his most iconic works. The background art for the stamp honoring Frank Capra shows a scene from It Happened One Night , a comedy in which a runaway heiress (played by Claudette Colbert) and a reporter (Clark Gable) compare their hitchhiking skills. For the John Ford stamp, the background recalls a scene from The Searchers , an influential Western starring John Wayne and making Ford’s characteristic use of the American landscape. The Maltese Falcon inspired the background art for the John Huston stamp. In this classic mystery, gumshoe Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart) goes up against various unscrupulous characters (among them Mary Astor, Peter Lorre, and Sydney Greenstreet). For Billy Wilder, the stamp background artwork was inspired by Some Like It Hot , a farce about two male musicians (Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis) who seek refuge from gangsters by posing as members of an all-girl band featuring luscious singer Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe). Art Director Derry Noyes of Washington, DC, designed these stamps using art by award-winning illustrator Gary Kelley of Cedar Falls, IA, who created the images using pastels on paper. After being a bit too candid in interviews back in 2010, where he frequently talked about his sex life and exes, Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson, the singer decided he needed to step back from the spotlight. With a week until he drops his new album, Born and Raised, the singer/songwriter sat with Ellen DeGeneres for a now-rare interview airing Tuesday. video platform video management video solutions video player “It was a very strange time and it sort of rocketed me into adulthood. It was a violent crash into being an adult,” Mayer told DeGeneres of his “TMI” era, per Usmagazine.com . “For a couple of years, it was just figuring it all out, and I’m glad I actually stayed out of the spotlight. Because I think back then I would’ve said, ‘Give me two weeks or let me get out and do ‘Ellen’ and let me explain myself.’ It was like, ‘No, idiot. Go away and be 33 and 34 instead of 28 for the fourth year.’ ” He added that he needed a break from the publicity and “had to go home for a minute… I just sort of lost my head for a little while.” With a new album on the horizon, Mayer is also dealing with some lingering vocal-cord issues, which caused him to cancel his spring tour and scale back on album promotion. “They cut this thing out of your throat and then they inject your vocal cords with Botox, which freezes your vocal cords so that this thing can heal without smacking up against the other side. I just need more Botox next time,” he explained. “It’s not a health concern whatsoever, but it has taken me out of singing.
