Selena Gomez Takes On ‘Raw’ Role In ‘Spring Breakers’

By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kara Warner Selena Gomez Photo: MTV News Despite its sunny title, it seems that Selena Gomez ‘s next film is going to be anything but a joyful romp. With “Kids” director Harmony Korine at the directing wheel, “Spring Breakers” will take a turn for the dark and unwieldy. Which is fine for 19-year-old Gomez, whose film docket is quickly getting filled up with films that could make Disney execs blush. The flick follows a group of college girls (played by Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens and “Pretty Little Liars” star Ashley Benson) who rob a restaurant to pay for their spring break. After landing in jail, they quickly become entangled with a drug and arms dealer who bails them out. James Franco stars in the film as the corn row-wearing bad guy. “It’s really fun. It’s completely different than anything I’ve done before,” she added. “People are going to be a little surprised, I think, by the choice. But it’s such a good movie. It’s real. It’s raw. It’s about actual spring break and it’s just, they kind of take it to a whole other level.” She gushed about the chance to work with Korine, who she said took her acting to a new level. “It’s great. The freedom we had, I mean Harmony, the director, was so flexible with us,” she explained. “He just really allowed us to push ourselves, which was nice. He never said we did anything wrong. He just said it was a choice. He gave us these locations and just said, ‘Act like you’re on spring break.’ ” In addition to “Spring Breakers,” Gomez is also attached to a thriller with Ethan Hawke, “The Getaway,” as well as Eli Roth’s next flick, “Aftershock.” Are you excited to see Selena Gomez in “Spring Breakers”? James Franco , Selena Gomez , and Harmony Korine are down in Florida filming Spring Breakers , a movie about four coeds (including Disney tween queen Gomez) indebted to a rapping dealer named Alien (Franco) after they rob a bank to finance their spring break trip and he bails them out. All of this sounded innocent enough, at least as much as a Korine film can seem, until images of Franco emerged from the set. Some called his look Kevin Federline-esque ; rapper Riff Raff stepped forth to actually claim, proudly, that Franco’s cornrowed, blinged-out drug dealer persona was based on him . Here’s a bonus look that confirms that this isn’t just a shared psychotic Friday afternoon daydream we’re all having, posted by Gomez to her Twitter account yesterday with the message “This is where the trouble begins…” (The shoot is being heavily documented both on Tumblr and Twitter , for those interested in candid shots of Gomez, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine, and Vanessa Hudgens in bikinis.) Meanwhile, Fuse TV got Riff Raff on the line to explain that he was originally offered a part by Korine before Franco came to adopt his style in the film, which also supposedly stars Gucci Mane, AKA that rapper with the ice cream cone tattoo on his face : “I sent him a few things. But all you gotta do [to see how I dress] is search through my videos. I got a pretty distinct style, with the braids, the jewelry.” Damn. Somewhere in Florida, where they’re shooting Spring Breakers, at this very moment, James Franco looks exactly like this. On the movie as a whole, Riff Raff said, “I feel really kind of privileged because I got this big actor playing the role of me but at the same time, like, damn, I wish I was there… “Even though I couldn’t be a part of this project, I’m still glad that James Franco could play the role of me. That’s like if Denzel Washington was playing the role of O.J. Simpson. Even though it’s not O.J. Simpson, O.J. Simpson still gotta be like, ‘Denzel Washington is playing me.'” Sure thing, Riff Raff. News . “You’re always wrong when it comes to girls, you’re always wrong, so just say sorry when things are rough.” On Bieber’s latest single , he makes all the girls’ hearts melt when he sings, “If I was your boyfriend, never let you go/ Keep you on my arm, girl, you’d never be alone/ I can be a gentleman, anything you want,” but many are wondering if he had Gomez in mind when writing the track. “No, I mean the song definitely just comes from my heart and whatever that is, whatever is in there,” Justin said. “So, I mean, I’ll never let you go if you’re my girlfriend, I promise.” It seems like Gomez might be sticking around for a while, then! In an interview with Radio Disney’s “Celebrity Take With Jake,” Bieber may have also revealed the secret as to why their relationship is still going so strong. “You just have to be honest, that’s the first thing, because if you’re not honest, then the relationship is just not a good relationship,” Bieber said. “At the end of the day, your girl would appreciate you being honest more than lying to her and vice versa.” It probably doesn’t hurt the relationship when your boyfriend’s idea of a date is to rent out the Staples Center for a private viewing of “Titanic.” So with Bieber gearing up to release Believe and Gomez hard at work shooting “Spring Breakers,” will these two find time to possibly collaborate on a track? “I mean, yeah,” Bieber told Billy Bush Tuesday (March 27) on “Access Hollywood Live.” “If it would happen before, it’s going to happen now. There’s no difference. If we do a song together, we do a song together. It is what it is. I think she’s taking a little break from music for a while. Erika Van Pelt saw her elimination on American Idol coming last night. “I knew I was going to be in the bottom,” the finalist told reporters today on a conference call. “I would’ve had to have a super, super standout, crazy, over the top performance to [advance another week]. I never had my moment!” Erika Van Pelt – “I Believe in You and Me” Van Pelt had been in the bottom trio four weeks in a row (“Those stools are uncomfortable!” she said), and admits it “really stinks” being the first of the top 10 to be sent packing. But she’s also hopeful. “I’m stoked for tour. It’s just going to be amazing. I’m so excited to be on tour, especially with this group of people. We have a ton of fun together. Even through long rehearsal days and just, you know, hell, we somehow have a good time every time we go out there. Spring Breakers Break Out of Their Tops [PICS]

Don’t get too excited- the chances of Vanessa Hudgens , Ashley Benson or Selena Gomez losing their shirts for the upcoming Spring Breakers are slim to ” Mila Kunis in your bedroom with a whipped cream bikini”. But the films’ producers are throwing horny guys a bone- they reportedly recruited local strippers to provide “authenticity” (read: boobies) to the movie’s beach party scenes.
