‘Restrepo’: The War That Won’t End, By Kurt Loder

New combat doc raises question: Why are we in Afghanistan? Soldiers in Afghanistan in “Restrepo” Photo: National Geographic Channel Can there be an upside to war? Possibly. In “Restrepo,” a new documentary by veteran combat journalists Tim Hetherington and Sebastian Junger, we find ourselves on patrol with a company of U.S. soldiers in the Korengal Valley, one of the bloodiest corners of the ongoing Afghan conflict. It’s the spring of 2007, and the men have just weathered a heavy firefight. One of them emerges from it jacked-up and exultant. “That was fun!” he says. “You can’t get a better high. Once you get shot at … you can’t top that.” The film vividly captures the dust and blood and the sheer drudgery of war. The unit has been assigned to build a new forward outpost right up against the edge of Taliban territory. Build it from scratch with picks and shovels, while in the surrounding mountains, enemy fire is constant. The Taliban warriors come so close they can be heard talking to one another. But the American soldiers work straight through the night, and make a good start. They never complain. They christen the new base Restrepo Outpost, after a departed comrade, Juan “Doc” Restrepo, who recently took two bullets in the neck and bled out on the med-evac helicopter. They talk about Restrepo a lot, and we see footage of him goofing around on the flight that brought the men over here from a base in Italy. Like them, he was very young. Still sleepless, they set out on patrol. They pass through battered villages, stopping occasionally to interrogate suspicious-looking locals. (“You got pretty clean hands for a goat-herder.”) They meet with village elders and promise to “flood” the area with money and medical supplies if the villagers will only help fight the resurgent enemy. But the people caught in the middle of this conflict have defeat written on their faces. One man tells the company’s captain, through an interpreter, “If we let you know about Taliban, then we will get killed.” Alternatively, of course, this man could be Taliban. As was the case in the Vietnam War 40-odd years ago, in which the U.S. fought another indigenous enemy that didn’t wear uniforms, it’s virtually impossible to know. The company moves on. Intermittently, the crack of gunfire starts up, and the camera jostles wildly in keeping up with the GIs as they hit the ground and crawl through the dirt. One of them has been hit, shot dead. One of his friends briefly breaks down in tears. Another soldier tries to comfort him: “It was quick,” he says. The unit comes to another village. This one has been chewed up by missile fire from the Army attack helicopters whirling overhead. Five civilians have been killed, more wounded. Inside one house we see women, children, even a baby wet with blood. This is the face of collateral damage. Somewhere there’s a grand plan for this war, a political scenario devised by a regiment of office warriors back in Washington. But the soldiers here don’t talk about it. All they know is that there’s an enemy their country is fighting, and their job is to kill him. They’re tough and brave, and they’re good at it. They casually discuss the fact that they may well die here, but that’s not what concerns them most. What concerns them most is the possibility that one of their fellow soldiers may die — one of their pals, the only family they have in this hostile place. The movie follows this company through 2008, when the men completed their 15-month deployment and were being flown back to Italy. What we don’t see is the aftermath. This past April, having alienated the local populace, the Army withdrew the last of its troops from the Korengal Valley. Earlier this month, the Afghan conflict, which began directly after 9/11, became the longest war in U.S. history. More than a thousand U.S. soldiers have died in it. Last December, President Obama announced his intention to send 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan, bringing the total number of U.S. forces in-country to 100,000. But at the same time, he also announced that he’ll begin pulling them out again next year. The president has since wobbled on that commitment. Still, it’s hard to imagine the Taliban not feeling that victory in this long war is now mainly a waiting game. The directors, Hetherington and Junger, acknowledge that they are men of the political left. Apart from the editing decisions they’ve made, though, their documentary recalls, in a smaller way, the disturbing images that emerged out of Vietnam, and ultimately turned America against that war. “Restrepo” is the answer to a question that will surely continue being asked. Don’t miss Kurt Loder’s reviews of “Knight and Day” and “Dogtooth,” also new in theaters this week. Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood Talk ‘Inspiring’ Nashville Rising Benefit Concert

‘I’m just really happy to be a part of it,’ Swift said of performing at Nashville benefit show. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift performs at the Nashville Rising Benefit Concert on Tuesday Photo: Ed Rode/ Nashville Rising/ Getty Images On Tuesday night, Taylor Swift joined forces with Miley Cyrus, Carrie Underwood, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill and even Sandra Bullock for the charity show Nashville Rising: A Benefit Concert for Flood Recovery , at the Bridgestone Arena. The artists teamed up in an effort to raise money to help the Nashville area, which was devastated by floods earlier this spring. Taylor Swift explained that as soon as she heard there was a chance for her to help out , she jumped at it. “Thankfully the people that are close to me that lost their houses have found different places to live and I’ve really seen them help each other,” she said. “It’s been really inspiring. As soon as I even heard that they’re putting something together, I just volunteered and I said I want to do this and I want to help out. It’s really wonderful that Tim and Faith stepped to action so quickly. I’m just really happy to be a part of it.” Carrie Underwood said she was happy to help the city that has shown her music career so much support was heart-warming. “You hear everything from people losing possessions to entire houses being gone. I’ve heard of people living in tents in their backyard,” she said. “You just hear the worst of the worst and hope that in some way there’s something you can do about it. It is for a good cause so I feel like everyone has a happy giving. You look out there and everybody’s at their best.” Billy Ray Cyrus, with his superstar daughter Miley by his side, may have summed it up best. “You know it’s always great to come home. I’m sorry it’s under these circumstances, [but] to feel the energy from the crowd, the band — everybody’s coming together with a common cause,” he said of the evening. “It seemed to be quite a homecoming and for a good reason. I think that Nashville is going to survive this with their heads held high.” See the Nashville Rising website to learn more about what you can do to help with flood relief. Taylor Swift Talks Nashville Flood Benefit With Miley Cyrus

‘Nashville is really being rebuilt, and everybody’s been so wonderful,’ Swift tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift Photo: MTV News On Tuesday night (June 22), Taylor Swift will be one of the many Nashville superstars on hand for Nashville Rising: A Benefit Concert for Flood Recovery . The singer, who lives in the area, will join the night’s hosts, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill , as they raise money to help the area devastated by floods earlier this spring. Swift said she and her band weren’t immune to the destruction. “The flood definitely affected all of Nashville. You know, for me, the fact that there were members of my band that lost their homes really affected me, because those are my friends,” she told MTV News. “Those are the people I call up as soon as we get home. The fact that it affected my band, that’s the most directly it affected me.” While some of her bandmates have struggled to get their feet back on the ground, Swift said, “Thankfully, my home wasn’t damaged, but seeing people that I’ve known for years trying to figure out where they’re going to stay, it was really painful to watch. Nashville is really being rebuilt, and everybody’s been so wonderful.” Swift, who donated $500,000 to help the area back in May, will be joined by fellow teen queen Miley Cyrus , who had her big Can’t Be Tamed coming-out party Monday night, as well as country stars like Carrie Underwood, Brooks & Dunn, LeAnn Rimes, Miranda Lambert and Martina McBride. The show is set to take place at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. Funds will go to the Community Foundation, which provides philanthropic services in Middle Tennessee. Share your well-wishes for the victims of the Nashville flood in the comments, and tell us how you’ve helped. Related Artists Taylor Swift Miley Cyrus

B.o.B And Hayley Williams’ ‘Airplanes’ Video Shows Dark Side Of Fame

New video’s cavernous spaces echo the song’s tone. By James Montgomery B.o.B in his music video for “Airplanes” Photo: Rebel Rock It’s been in the works for a while — such is the peril of having two stars with such busy schedules — but now, it’s finally here: B.o.B and Hayley Williams’ video for “Airplanes” premiered on iTunes on Tuesday (June 15). B.o.B shot his scenes for the video in April, and Williams didn’t do her part until after Paramore finished their spring tour. But despite the fact that the two stars were never even in the same room during filming, the final result is quite seamless: a moody, swirling video that perfectly matches the ominous, somber tone of the song. B.o.B performs his scenes in an empty warehouse, a dark, dead space that’s given an electric overhaul (and faint heartbeat) with the creative lighting (and lasers!) of director Hiro Murai. Williams’ scenes also take place in the dark, though Murai bathes her in a swirling cosmos of lights and colors, a psychedelic effect that almost swallows her up. Much like the song itself, there’s an emptiness to the “Airplanes” video, a dark, cavernous space that light cannot penetrate. It implies a void that will never be filled, no matter how hard you try. It can be seen as a metaphor for fame — the loneliness that only the famous know, the cavernous expanses of geography and emotion. It’s sort of a beautiful bummer, to be honest. In that sense, “Airplanes” recalls Drake and Trey Songz equally somber “Successful” video , another clip that explored the downside of celebrity and success. There’s an art to such metaphors. It’s not complaining if you do it right. And in the case of “Airplanes,” a deft, decidedly human take on the pitfalls of everyone knowing your name (but never understanding your pain), B.o.B and Hayley Williams definitely did it right. What do you think of the “Airplanes” video? Share your reviews below.
