30 Seconds To Mars Make History At Triumphant Show

Band entered the Guinness Book of World Records on Wednesday night at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom. By James Montgomery Jared Leto of 30 Seconds to Mars Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — For a band that, over the past three years, has been no stranger to adversity — everything from battles with their label to scraps with censors and the occasional stage collapse — 30 Seconds to Mars had probably never had to deal with the kind of trouble that occurred during the encore of their record-setting show Wednesday night in New York. During the crashing crescendo of “Kings and Queens,” a female fan was crushed against a barricade and required immediate medical assistance. “Queens” was the final song of the band’s set, which was preceded by a lengthy presentation from the folks at Guinness World Records, who honored 30STM for Most Shows Played During An Album Cycle (309 was Guinness’ count). Jared Leto invited fans to join them onstage for the finale. Spirits were high inside the Hammerstein Ballroom, and as “Queens” unfolded, they only got higher … until Leto stopped the song and asked for medics to tend to the injured fan. After 20 solemn minutes, EMTs carried her away on a stretcher. “As soon as she got oxygen, she sat up and is doing OK,” 30STM’s management told MTV News after the show. After getting the all-clear, 30 Seconds to Mars undauntedly finished the song and the night ended with the crowd triumphantly chanting its “woah-oh-oh” hook while streamers fell from the ceiling. And not to downplay the severity of the situation, but it helped illustrate everything that made 30 Seconds to Mars’ record-setting run with This Is War so unique. Their ability to overcome obstacles, their willingness to push on, and the otherworldly bond they share with their fans — displayed best when drummer Shannon Leto left the stage to assist the EMTs. The band had already played more than 300 shows, and yet, they still pushed hard on Wednesday, imbuing songs like “Search and Destroy” and “Night of the Hunter” with walloping guitars, anthemic sing-along choruses and washes of spooky synths. Jared sprinted up and down the catwalk stage (not easy to do in a huge black cloak), shined a massive spotlight into the crowd to illuminate fans’ faces, and even performed a few acoustic numbers mid-set. Shannon pounded his kit as sweat flew, and guitarist Tomo Milicevic crunched chords and charmed ethereal soundscapes out of his ax. It could have been show number one, not the final gig of a two-year trek. Of course, 30STM’s fans matched, if not doubled, the band’s enthusiasm. There were signs in the audience touting the Detroit chapter of the Echelon, and at one point, Leto brought a fan onstage who had traveled all the way from Maryland. Every chorus was sung back to the band loudly, each massive chant repeated at top volume, and the opening chords of each new song greeted with squeals of delight. Fans reached skyward as confetti fell, and ooh-ed and aah-ed as lasers shot from the stage. This was definitely a celebration, in just about every conceivable way. Not surprisingly, the band seemed genuinely touched and a tad nostalgic. Jared told fans that the Guinness award was theirs, too, shouting, “I want everyone in here to carry this with them for the rest of their lives,” as he thrust the certificate above his head. As if their record-setting tour didn’t already tip you off to it, the rather frightening delay proved that 30STM are a band seemingly at their best when forced to push on. And on. And on. My name is Maria and never in a million years did I think I…

My name is Maria and never in a million years did I think I would EVER be writing one of these MBE. On November 23rd, my dreams came true. Justin performed on the Today Show that day. I can’t even begin to tell you how much seeing him in concert for the first time meant to me. I’ve waited almost 2 years to finally see him, and I really could not have asked for a better experience. I got to New York City at 10am, the day before and was in line by 11am. I almost died when I saw I was around 40th in line out of the 1,000 more people that would later show up! I met the mother that Justin tweeted about, who flew in fromĀ Virginia Ā to be first in line! She was there almost 2 days before me waiting outside. For the next 23 hours I sat outside in the non-stop pouring rain, all to see Justin! The police wouldn’t let us use tents, so I had nothing but an umbrella and a tarp to lay under. But there wasĀ definitelyĀ some surprises along the way! At about 4pm, SCOOTER BRAUN, the reason Justin is such a huge part of my life, arrived. He walked up and down the line meeting all the fans. He was so relaxed and calm and seemed really thankful for all the fans. When it was my turn to meet him, I completely froze up. I didn’t know what to say! I started rambling about how much he means to mean and how thankful I am for him and Justin and how he changed my life so much. He replied ā€œThat’s so sweet. But you have no idea how much you guys have changed mine! Thank you for everything!ā€ I died realizing I just talked to Scooter Braun! We got pictures and he signed stuff. When he was leaving, I tapped him on the shoulder and gave him a piece of paper with my Twitter on it and asked if he could please give it to Justin. He said, ā€œSure, don’t worry. I’ll make sure he gets it!ā€. Then I started crying, realizing there was a chance Justin would notice me. Scooter left and we all went back to camping out. About 4 hours later, my friends and I decided to go for a walk. A few minutes later, we heard LOUD screams. We started running toward them, only to find hundreds and hundreds of crying girls. We asked everyone what was happening and they said JUSTIN had just been there! We missed him! We all started crying, knowing we missed our only time to see him! We talked to all the girls who met him, and one of them even got a kiss from him! We got so depressed and I really didn’t understand how I missed my chance! 16 hours later, and it was FINALLY time to go in to see Justin. It was absolutely crazy going in, and a few people got trampled! At first, I didn’t really have that good of a view. But I didn’t care, I was seeing my idol, and that was all that mattered! All of a sudden, everyone started screaming. I looked up on stage and Justin was walking on for soundcheck! I really am not exaggerating when I say I almost passed out. He started warming up and singing little parts of songs. He was showing off so much, like doing tricks with the microphone. It was just unreal. He told everyone he couldn’t wait to perform and that he would see them soon and then he walked off. When the Today Show started it was just chaos. Justin was performing at the end of the show, so everyone got to watch the newscasters do the show. It was really cool being able to see them in person! Finally, it was Justin’s turn! Everyone literally went crazy! He performed Never Say Never and it was absolutely amazing. At this point, I was still toward the back, so I didn’t really get to see him that well and I only caught glimpses of him here and there. By the second song, I had managed to push my way all the way to the runway and I was literally leaning aganist the stage almost! Him and Usher (OMG) performed Chestnuts and that was also amazing. When Justin started singing Mistletoe, he came on the runway for the first time since I had gotten so close to the stage. I was literally 2 feet from him and I just started sobbing. He is so perfect in person I didn’t even know what to do with myself. I know everyone says that, but he is absolutely flawless in person. During the last song, he came out on the runway for a while and touched all the fans hands. He missed mine, but he touched the girl next Ā to me and I was really happy for her because she literally was like dead on the ground, it was so cute. When the concert was over, I cried for a while and then realized Justin was probably leaving the building! We sprinted to the front doors and waited and waited and waited. Police kept telling us to keep moving and that everyone already left, but we refused to believe them! Lucky for us a few minutes later, Scooter, Carin, and Kenny came out! They said thank you to all the fans for coming out and that they hope to see everyone soon! Everyone kept asking if Justin was coming, and they said no, so things cleared out pretty fast! After that day, I slept for one day straight, considering I only got like 20 minutes of sleep camping out. However, I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. I know I didn’t meet Justin that day for a reason, and someday it will be my turn. Seeing Justin in person is something I never thought would happen to me, and it really did prove to me that anything is possible! So to everyone who didn’t get their chance yet, NEVER SAY NEVER because your day will come! Justin, I love you so much. Thank you for changing my life. I’m proud to say I’m a belieber and I will be until the very end! – @kkkidrauhl See the original post here: My name is Maria and never in a million years did I think I…

Chris Brown Takes It ‘All Back’ At 2011 AMAs

Breezy performs a pair of F.A.M.E. tunes, also including ‘Say It With Me.’ By James Dinh Chris Brown performs at the AMAs Photo: Kevork Djansezian/ Getty Images Chris Brown knows how to put on a dance-tastic performance. And that’s exactly what the pop&B entertainer did at the 2011 American Music Awards on Sunday (November 20). Donning a white T-shirt and jeans, Brown began his performance with his slow jam “All Back” alongside his band. With just a microphone stand in tow, the singer twirled around the stage and displayed some rather raw and emotional vocals. While it may have appeared to be a rather basic set, Breezy’s performance turned high-tech when the tune came to a close and the stage turned black. Breezy continued his performance with another F.A.M.E. tune, “Say It With Me.” Keeping in sync with a computer-generated backdrop, the singer mirrored some Michael Jackson-esque moves with his four background dancers. As a spotlight followed the singer, CB pulled out an over-the-top choreographed sequence, full of backflips and spins that echoed similar backdrop technology used during Beyonc

Nickelback’s Thanksgiving Show Makes United Way ‘Grateful’

Organization addresses controversy surrounding band’s halftime performance in Detroit in an email to MTV News. By James Montgomery Chad Kroeger of Nickelback Photo: Getty Images By now, you’ve no doubt heard what some Detroit Lions fans have to say about Nickelback’s halftime performance at the team’s annual Thanksgiving game (hint, it isn’t good), but to date, folks with the Lions — and the NFL, for that matter — have remained silent on the matter. The same cannot be said, however, for the United Way, the sponsors of the halftime show, who released a statement last week officially confirming that Nickelback were on board for the event, and have now weighed in on the controversy surrounding their performance. In particular, the organization addressed criticism from some Lions fans that an artist from Detroit should have been booked for the high-profile game in an email to MTV News. “We’re grateful to Nickelback for generously donating time and resources to this effort,” United Way director of publicity Sal Fabens wrote. “This is a nationally televised show that historically has featured artists from many locations, such as Indiana’s John Mellencamp [and] New York’s Mary J. Blige … For the past two years, we featured Motown artists and Detroit’s own Kid Rock, but the performers have never been limited to those from Detroit.” Fabens also wrote that, in one way, the fact that some 75,000 fans have signed an online petition calling for the band’s ouster is fitting, since the theme of the United Way’s halftime performance is “Live United.” “This is a call to action, an invitation for everyone to join us, regardless of their stance on various issues, to move forward on creating opportunities for a better life for all,” he wrote. “It’s going to take everyone working together … to make progress on ambitious goals in the areas of education, income and health across the country … We invite varying points of view and voices to all come together so we can move forward. “We would hope that various opinions about a rock band don’t overshadow the fact that the band’s generosity is helping to bring attention to this message,” Fabens’ email concluded. Jay-Z Releases, Pulls "Occupy All Streets" T-Shirts

Looks like Jay-Z may now be up to 100 problems. After a perceived attempt to cash in on the populist Occupy Wall Street protests through the sale of T-shirts with the slogan “Occupy All Streets” for $22, the duds were removed from the ” Otis ” rapper’s Rocawear website Saturday with no explanation. All in a 48-hour span. So what happened? Jay-Z came under fire after it was reported that Rocawear didn’t plan to donate any of the proceeds from the sales to the Occupy Wall Street movement he claims to support. That fact was later confirmed by his label. “The ‘Occupy All Streets’ shirt was created in support of the Occupy Wall Street movement,” a Rocawear rep said in a statement Friday. “Rocawear strongly encourages all forms of constructive expression, whether it be artistic, political or social.” “‘Occupy All Streets’ is our way of reminding people that there is change to be made everywhere, not just on Wall Street. At this time we have not made an official commitment to monetarily support the movement.” Needless to say, those involved in “Occupy Wall Street” were not happy. “To attempt to profit off of the first important social moment of 50 years with overpriced pieces of cotton is an insult to the ongoing fight for economic civil rights known as #occupywallstreet,” an Occupy Wall Street leader who goes by “Grim” said. Meanwhile, Russell Simmons, an avid supporter of the Occupy Wall Street movement, said the shirt in question “takes #OccupyWallStreet to the next level.” It did . The shirts, which were sold for $22 a pop, are no longer available.
