‘X Factor’ Debut: Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul Reunite At Judges’ Table

Highly anticipated Fox singing show puts emphasis on contestants’ hopeful backstories over gag auditions. By Adam Graham “The X Factor” Judges Photo: Fox A 20-year-old mama’s boy, a 42-year-old stay-at-home mom and a 13-year-old with big pop dreams were among the discoveries on Wednesday’s (September 21) two-hour premiere of “The X Factor,” Fox’s highly anticipated new singing competition. The show, adapted from the British hit, featured the American television return of Simon Cowell who, after nine seasons, left “American Idol” to launch “X Factor” Stateside. Cowell was joined on the judges’ panel by record executive Antonio “L.A.” Reid, his former “Idol” sparring partner Paula Abdul and pop stars Cheryl Cole and Nicole Scherzinger , who played a game of musical chairs in the premiere episode. (Cole appeared at the L.A. auditions, and then ceded her chair to Pussycat Doll Scherzinger.) There are several major differences between “X” and “Idol,” foremost being the $5 million recording contract that will awarded to the “X Factor” winner. Other distinctions? “X” is open to singers ages 13 and up, including groups of artists; contestants will eventually be divided into four categories (boys, girls, over-30s and groups); and early audition rounds are held in front of a live audience rather than the closed quarters of the early “Idol” rounds. Also, judging by its premiere offering, “X Factor” is going for a more hopeful, positive vibe than “Idol,” focusing on contestants’ inspirational backstories rather than gag auditions. This tone was set early with the first contestant at the Los Angeles tryouts, 13-year-old Rachel Crow, who even at her young age called the audition “the most important thing I’ve ever done in my life.” The spiral-haired Crow, who sang a cute, spirited version of Duffy’s “Mercy,” told the judges she wanted a bigger home for her six-person family, which is currently crammed into a two-bedroom home. The judges took to her act, with Paula saying she did “exactly what we need people to do on this stage.” She sailed through to the next round, perhaps a beneficiary of the judges’ early good moods. Siameze Floyd, a 30-year-old “megastar”-in-waiting, who already has dreams of his own energy drink (“Siamenergy!”), had a slightly tougher road to travel. With his blown-out Prince ‘do and heels to match, he took the judges by surprise with a series of spins, splits and high kicks that recalled David Lee Roth by way of James Brown. L.A. Reid wasn’t sold, questioning Floyd’s “originality,” though the other three judges sent him through, despite (or perhaps because of) Cowell’s prediction that “he will be a total, utter nightmare.” The disagreement between Reid and Cowell was teased in a montage of the two bickering with each other, all set to “Eye of the Tiger.” If “Idol” was focused on the back-and-forth between Simon and Paula, “X Factor” is foreshadowing a clash between the two big dogs at the opposite ends of the judges’ table. But both Cowell and Reid were able to agree on Stacy Francis, a 42-year-old stay-at-home mom who treated her tryout like her last shot at glory. Saying she’d been kicked around and told she was too old for the past 12 years, she told Cowell, “I don’t want to die with this music in me,” and proceeded to let it out with a version of Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” that Cowell called “one of the best auditions I’ve ever heard in my life.” Francis handily graduated to the next level of the competition, sob story in tow. Seattle auditions were highlighted in the show’s second hour, and 20-year-old Marcus Canty wowed the judges with his confident, footloose take on Stevie Wonder’s “I Wish.” Reid, in one of the show’s biggest votes of confidence, compared the singer to a young Bobby Brown, while Cowell tagged him as “one to watch.” Canty, a self-described “mama’s boy” who put off college to pursue his pop dreams, fell to the floor of the stage when he heard the ovation from the crowd. The Anser, a boy band trio from Salt Lake City, Utah, also made an impression, but the show’s closing slot was given to Chris Rene, a 28-year-old trash collector and recovering substance abuser whose original song, “Young Homey” won over the judges as well as the crowd at the Seattle arena. The song featured confessional sung/rapped verses, and Rene entered into a (slightly shaky) falsetto at the chorus, but the judges scooped it up. “What did you write, ‘Lil homey, what you trippin’ on?’ ” Scherzinger asked, referencing the lyrics of the song. “Yeah honey, I’m trippin’ on you. I’m serious. ” She said that Rene had, you guessed it, the “X factor.” The two-part “X Factor” premiere continues Thursday night on Fox. What did you think of “The X Factor” premiere? Charlie Sheen Gives Ashton Kutcher ‘Advice’ At The Emmys

‘Make us proud!’ actor tweets to his ‘Two and a Half Men’ replacement after backstage meeting. By Eric Ditzian Charlie Sheen and Ashton Kutcher backstage at the Emmy Awards Photo: Charlie Sheen The Charlie Sheen image-rehabilitation tour continues. Days after the former “Two and a Half Men” star began making the media rounds, confessing on the “Tonight Show” that he should have been fired and on the “Today” show that maybe pretending tiger blood coursed through his veins wasn’t such a good idea, Sheen popped over to the Emmy Awards on Sunday. Before presenting the lead actor award, Sheen, a four-time Emmy nominee during his run on “Men,” sauntered out onto the stage and told everyone at his old show, “From the bottom of my heart, I wish nothing but the best for this upcoming season. We spent eight wonderful years together, and I know you will continue to make great television.” As if this latest version of Charlie Sheen couldn’t get any stranger (or warm-and-fuzzier), the actor then tweeted a series of backstage pics with his “Two and a Half Men” replacement, Ashton Kutcher. “Giving the new kid a little advice!” Sheen tweeted , attempting a bit of elder statesman bonhomie, before adding some straightforward sincerity. “[G]reat talking to you! We’ll all be watching! Make us proud!” The flurry of apologies and normal-guy behavior comes ahead of the Monday-night premieres of Sheen’s Comedy Central Roast and the new “Two and a Half Men.” On Sunday night at the Emmys, Kutcher shared the stage with his new co-star, Jon Cryer, to whom he confessed, “I am not Charlie Sheen. Jon, I want to tell you something. I do not think that you are a troll.” Perhaps somewhere backstage, if not on Twitter, Sheen was able to apologize to Cryer for that troll comment a few months back. And if it didn’t happen on Sunday, it probably will in the future, for the Charlie Sheen rehabilitation tour shows no sign of slowing down, despite the lack of Adonis DNA onboard. Britney Spears Engagement Ring

Look at that BLING! Although the two denied reports that Jason Trawick was planning to propose to the pop queen (again), you have to wonder if he will. It#39;s been a long, serious relationship at this stage, and if anyone#39;s familiar with her very complicated past and present life situation, it#39;s her former agent. If we#39;ve learned anything over the years, it#39;s that Britney Spears occasionally loves wearing huge, diamond jewelery on her left ring finger. But that doesn#39;t mean sh

Lucy Lawless Mourns the Death of "Brilliant" Andy Whitfield

Spartacus: Blood and Sand star Andy Whitfield passed away at the age of 39 yesterday, about a year after a recurrence of his Stage 1 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Spartacus Preview While thoughtful messages and Tweets pour in from around Hollywood, former co-star Lucy Lawless has released a special statement to Entertainment Weekly that reads: “Obviously, Andy Whitfield left an indelible mark on all of us in the Spartacus family. He was a gentle man who never said a bad word about anyone, a gifted photographer, engineer (no really!) and a brilliant actor. Andy’s incandescent film presence made men want to be him and women want to marry him. Andy’s

My name is Rachel and I am 13 years old. Back in June, I was lucky enough to win passes to the MMVA’s in Toronto. I was in the car one day listening to CHUM FM (they were running the contest) thinking “never say never”. Then they told me please hold and that I had won the passes! No one knew that Justin was going to be there but we all had a feeling that he would show up. When I got to Toronto that day I had to wait for  almost  4 hours but it was worth it! When the show started I had an awesome view. I was right in the front row! Then Justin came out to accept his first award with Drake on the stage further from me and I thought, well he  isn’t  that close but I am closer to him than I ever thought I would be! After that I thought Justin wouldn’t be coming out on stage anymore but I was wrong. Near the end of the show, Justin won a second award and this time he was going to accept it on the stage right infront of me! When they announced his name I started to freak out! As he walked onto the stage he touched everyone’s hand and then stopped right beside me to get his award. I could not believe that my inspiration and role model JUSTIN BIEBER was right there. When Selena Gomez was introducing Lady Gaga, he looked over at me for like 5 seconds which  isn’t  very long but I still can’t believe that I was able to be so close to him! Justin if you ever read this I just want to say one thing THANK YOU for everything you do for your fans and how you care about them no matter what! – Rachel Visit link: My name is Rachel and I am 13 years old. On the 20th March 2011 I saw Justin Drew Bieber live for the…

On the 20th March 2011 I saw Justin Drew Bieber live for the first time in the M.E.N Arena in Manchester, UK. It was honestly the best night of my life. All day I was so so so excited it just wouldn’t sink in. I arrived at the arena a few hours early to wait for Justin but I didn’t have much luck. I then queued up for a while and finally the doors opened at 6:00pm. I ran in and bought the programme straight away. I then found the door that lead to all the floor seats and ran down the steps as fast as I could to the floor. The man then took me to my seats because I was row G, I had no idea what that meant. I was 5 rows from the front, I started to cry because I knew in a few hours I was going to be 5 rows away from my baby. I called my mum up and thanked her for the amazing seats she got me. I sat and felt the buzz and the atmosphere whilst Bluey Robinson performed to get the crowd pumped. Willow Smith then came on and during her last song “Whip my hair” Scooter and Ryan came out on stage and started dancing and whipping their hair. I was so happy I got to see them in the flesh. Then the stage doors opened again and Jaden Smith and Justin ran out and I completely flipped out. I went crazy, I got such an adrenaline rush that when he ran off stage I passed out for a few seconds.. I was that pumped. Then my friend woke me up and I was fine. This is how he pranked her . Then the countdown on the clock began and I couldn’t breathe, I was so hyped, it got to the final 10 second countdown and I was so overwhelmed that the shaking, crying and screaming was uncontrollable. Finally Justin Bieber rose up from below the stage and performed amazingly! It was the best night of my life, I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better experience. 20th March 2011, the night my dream came true, I love you Justin.  Follow this link: On the 20th March 2011 I saw Justin Drew Bieber live for the…

Chris Brown Fan: Keeping Rolex ‘Didn’t Cross My Mind’

‘I was afraid it was gonna get broken,’ VMA hero Alisha Borton tells MTV News of rescuing singer’s pricey watch. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Rebecca Thomas Chris Brown tosses his Rolex into the crowd during his performance at the 2011 VMAs Photo: MTV When Chris Brown ‘s Rolex went missing during his high-flying VMA performance last month, it was a young lady in the audience who found the watch and promptly returned it to the pop star. Alisha Borton, a 24-year-old Ohio native, got tickets to the 2011 VMAs through a casting service while she was in California visiting a friend. Little did Alisha know that just by attending the show — and finding Brown’s very expensive Rollie — she would become the unofficial leader of Team Breezy. “I was actually on the stage right behind where the trampoline was,” Borton recalled to MTV News on Wednesday. “You can see me right behind the trampoline … on TV [and] you can see where he takes off his watch and throws it. I guess he did it on purpose. There’s the watch flying in the air, I just picked it up and put it on my wrist. I was afraid it was gonna get broken.” After putting on the watch for safekeeping, the dental hygiene student kept her eye out for the singer. “Whenever he came off the stage, I kind of went towards him but he didn’t see me at all,” she explained. “Then we were walking back to where we were [standing onstage]. Then there was a lady … the lady came up to me [and said], ‘I need that watch,’ and she took it.” The star’s watch is worth an estimated $22,000, and Alisha joked, “I thought it was expensive, I didn’t think it was that expensive. I had it on my wrist waiting for somebody to take it. That’s crazy,” she added about the price of the accessory. “That’s like taking a car and trying to sell it. It didn’t cross my mind that I could keep it.” For helping to make sure that watch got back in one piece, Breezy rewarded Borton with concert tickets and a special VIP meet-and-greet with him at his September 21 show in Ohio. “It’s just been so crazy. I haven’t gotten to process it yet. My friends are probably tired of me talking about it,” she laughed. Related Videos VMA 2011: Performances Related Artists Chris Brown
