First Planet Found Beyond Our Galaxy

The evidence for that ancient act of cosmic cannibalism is the still-digesting remains of the meal: a handful of relatively nearby stars known as the Helmi Stream, whose weird orbits — above and below the plain of the galaxy — are a tipoff to their weird origin. Now one of those stars has a second claim to fame. HIP 13044, as it's unglamorously known, has a planet whirling around it — the first planet ever found from outside the Milky Way. Aside from its extra-galactic origin, the planet itself, found with a medium-size telescope at the European Southern Observatory in Chile, and described in a new paper in Science, isn't especially remarkable. It's a bit bigger than Jupiter and orbits its parent star in about 16 days — a “year” so short it would once have been considered impossible for so giant a planet, until multiple discoveries of many similar worlds proved such a revolution rate to be pretty common. (See pictures of the labor of space exploration.) It's the star itself that makes the discovery of a planet surprising, for a couple of reasons. For one thing, its age — perhaps 7 or 8 billion years — means that while HIP 13044 was once much like the Sun, it's gone through a dramatic change of life. As it burned through its supply of hydrogen, the star would have swelled to become a so-called red giant, tens, or even hundreds of times its original size. When that happens to our Sun billions of years from now, Earth will probably be destroyed. Indeed, there's some circumstantial evidence that HIP 13044 may have gulped down a few planets itself, says the paper's lead author Johny Setiawan, of Germany's Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, in Heidelberg. “The star is a fast rotator,” he says, “and theory predicts that if a star swallows a planet its rotation rate should increase.” But the new planet, called HIP 13044b, survived the cataclysm. That's probably because the Jupiter-size world originally occupied a Jupiter-like orbit, much farther from its star than Earth is from the Sun. It spiraled in to its present orbit only after HIP 13044 shrank back to a more dignified size — another common stage of life for stars, which return to their original dimensions when they start burning the helium in their core. A tiny handful of planets have been seen orbiting stars that are currently red giants, but this is the first to be found in the next chapter of a star's life. (See pictures of Russia's cosmonaut training center.) The other thing that makes the star unusual is its composition. The Sun is mostly hydrogen and helium, but it also has significant traces of heavier elements like oxygen, carbon and iron, a quality astronomers call “metallicity” despite the non–metallic nature of some of those elements. “In the Milky Way,” says Setiawan, “the more metals a star has, the more likely it is to have planets.” The reason for that is simple: both stars and planets coalesce out of the same vast pool of dust and gas. The higher the metallicity, the bigger the supply of building material and the likelier that some will be left over to form planets. Dwarf galaxies like the one in which HIP 13044 was born, however — and like the two dozen or so that still orbit the Milky Way — have stars that are notably metal-poor. It was unclear until now whether that meant they'd also be planet-poor. The fact that Setiawan and his colleague Rainer Klement, also of the Max Planck Institute, found one so easily suggests this isn't the case. “Either they were incredibly lucky,” says Eric Ford, a planet-searcher at the University of Florida, “or planets aren't uncommon around stars like these.” Whatever the answer, HIP 13044b is clearly a very different world from any we've seen before, one that — without the aid of celestial metals — formed in a very different way. And that in turn suggests that the field of planetary science, which seemed so tidy and settled as recently as the 1990s, is still full of surprises. added by: EthicalVegan

REVIEW: Sally Hawkins Strikes in Semi-Rousing Made in Dagenham

A substantial slice of socio-history cut with plain yogurt and a glob of treacle, then pulse-puréed to a smooth, hyper-digestible consistency, Made in Dagenham tastes how I imagine a feminist placebo might. The true story (an account of British woman machinists who strike for equal pay in 1968) and the star (the ineffable Sally Hawkins) are bound up in director Nigel Cole’s recipe for a film that’s passable in every available way.

The Borg Queen like you’ve never seen her before!

Alice Krige's Borg Queen oozes sensuality and creepiness in this new poster from Mondo, the Alamo Drafthouse's collectible art boutique. We're bringing you an exclusive first look at the Star Trek: First Contact poster before it goes on sale Thursday. We brought you an exclusive look at one of Mondo's Star Wars posters before it went on sale a while back, and now here's a Star Trek counterpart. This First Contact poster is the work of artist Ken Taylor, and it's the first Mondo Star Trek poster to focus on one of the movies instead of an original series episode. Says Mondo creative director Justin Ishmael: The first two releases in our STAR TREK series focused on episodes from the original series. SPACE SEED and THE TROUBLE WITH TRIBBLES both featured iconic characters and creatures, so we decided to focus on one of the most recognized and loved of all STAR TREK characters…the Borg. Not only are the Borg incredibly interesting and visually stunning, but they function as a cohesive unit with the queen as their leader. Too Short Addresses Idaho Nightclub Arrest

‘The incident that night was completely taken out of context,’ rapper says of reports that he was socializing with underage females. By Mawuse Ziegbe Too Short Photo: Boise Police Department Last week, Too Short was arrested and charged with three counts of misdemeanor battery after a scuffle broke out between the star and his associate and club security at the Boise, Idaho, Knitting Factory. According to the Idaho Statesman, witnesses said the fight started after security informed the star that bringing underage women backstage and into his dressing room was prohibited. The MC was released from custody after posting bail. Too Short (real name: Todd Anthony Shaw) recently spoke out about the incident and blasted reports that suggested he was inappropriately fraternizing with young women. “The accusations against me regarding my arrest in Idaho on July 15th were untrue and exaggerated,” the rapper told XXL magazine in a statement. “Due to my work with young people in Oakland, I am extremely outraged at the way I am being portrayed. The incident that night was completely taken out of context, and I have not and never will take advantage of any woman that is underage.” The MC also said he wanted to maintain his status as a role model to his young fans. “I have been dedicated to youth organizations and wish to continue to support them,” the statement continued. “I do not want my community and especially young people that look up to me to think that this is the type of thing that I would do.” Reps for Too Short did not respond to MTV News’ request for comment at press time. The Cali star is due in court August 4 and could face a $1,000 fine and up to six months in prison if convicted. Related Artists Too Short

Lil Wayne Talks Daily Routine, New Lyrics In Letter To Fans

‘Amazing would be too typical and perfect would be unfair,’ Weezy says of his new rhymes. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lil Wayne Photo: Alexander Tamargo/Getty Images Since Lil Wayne went to jail earlier this year, his fans have been curious about how the star is holding up. Artists who have kept in touch with Weezy — like Tyga , Nicki Minaj and Fat Joe — have given updates about the star’s bid, and roughly midway through his sentence, Wayne has written another letter to his fans, opening up about his time in Rikers. In the letter, posted Tuesday (July 13) on his website, WeezyThanxYou.com , Wayne said he’s “counting the days and still smiling” and gives up details about his daily routine. “I wake up around 11AM. Have some coffee. Call my kids, and my wonderful mother. I then shower up. Read fan mail. Have lunch. Back on the phone. Read a book or write some thoughts down. Have dinner. Phone. Pushups. Then I listen to ESPN on the radio. Read the bible, then sleep. That’s my day,” Weezy wrote. The routine reflects a level of normalcy that experts predicted the star would experience in jail. The superstar MC also opened up about the new lyrics he’s been penning in the pen, writing, “There’s no word that I can think of that properly defines them. Amazing would be too typical and perfect would be unfair.” In addition, Weezy said the outpouring of support he’s received while in lockup has prompted him to pay closer attention to his words. “I never imagined that I could have such an impact on people’s lives. Because of this, I vow to be a bit more careful of what I say,” Wayne wrote. Wayne also revealed that he’s keeping up with the pace of music, writing, “I listen to the radio sometimes, emphasis on sometimes, and I hear the new music. I like some.” He might not be into all the latest radio hits, but Weezy did show love to his Young Money artists. “I applaud my Young Money family for what they’re doing. As I’m not surprised. This is what we’re supposed to do. Congrats to Drake and Nicki for all their recent success. Those 2 are going to have me retiring early.” The megastar rapper closed the letter by sending detailed messages to dozens of individual fans. The star wrote to one fan (who’s presumably a fan of both Miley Cyrus and Weezy), “Me and Miley? Different, but cool. Enjoy Utah,” and to another, “Thanx for supporting me in the U.K.. Say hi to Lexie for me.” To those he wasn’t able to shout out by name, the artist ended the letter with a simple message: “I thank my fans for appreciating me the way you do.” Are you surprised by Wayne’s daily routine in prison?
