Kim Kardashian has reportedly been in contact with Jared Kushner and the White House for months about Johnson’s case, according to Mic . In addition, there has been more frequent communication the past week and Kardashian is working to bring Johnson’s case to the Trump’s desk. In 1997, a Memphis paper reported she lead a “multimillion-dollar drug ring that dealt in tons of cocaine from 1991-94.” However, who knows how accurate “multimillion-dollar drug ring” is — this was the era of Clinton’s crime reform bill, which was locking up Black men and women for drug crimes and giving them long, mandatory prison sentences. After Alice and her husband divorced in 1989, she lost her job at Fedex, which she had for seven years, and her youngest son was killed in a motorcycle accident, she admitted to CNN.com , “ I made some very poor decisions out of desperation. I want this part to be clear: I acknowledge that I have done wrong. I made the biggest mistake of my life to make ends meet and got involved with people selling drugs.” Alice Marie Johnson describes her crimes as “I became what is called a telephone mule, passing messages between the distributors and sellers. I participated in a drug conspiracy, and I was wrong.” Her daughter started a petition to ask for President Barack Obama to grant Alice Marie Johnson clemency, but she was denied . Her daughter said since her mother has been in prison “she has been a model prisoner who mentors women and has become an ordained minister. She has also written, directed, and produced several plays and writings for conferences outside of prison walls, choreographed dance teams, and completed many classes and certifications. Her supporters include Congressman Steve Cohen (D) Tennessee, Congressman Bennie Thompson (D) Mississippi, and Congressman Marc Veasey (D) Ft. Worth, Texas.” While this is a valiant effort from Kim and we hope she is successful in getting Alice Marie Johnson released from jail, unfortunately, Trump is calling for the death penalty for drug-related crimes. (Photo by Julie Dermansky/Corbis via Getty Images) Just two weeks ago, two young black men were arrested after a Starbucks barista called police on them for simply sitting down in the coffeehouse. Video captured the arrests and the clip went viral immediately. The reaction was swift and unrelenting. The young black men were clearly racially profiled and treated like they were because they are black. Hell, they were only in the Starbucks for two minutes, not even really getting a chance to actually loiter. The outrage towards Starbucks came from all corners of social media – white, black, man and woman – all joined forces to threaten boycotts, write the company and demand they rectify a wrongdoing. As a result of the mobilizing, the Starbucks CEO decided to stand with the young men, offering them working opportunities, making media appearances and even closing stores for a day to initiate diversity training for its employees. This was certainly above and beyond what we’ve seen from most companies accused of racial insensitivities and it’s largely thanks to the efforts of black activists who held Starbucks’ feet to the fire nonstop. Waffle House has been spared this outcome. Chikesia Clemons walked into a Waffle House in Saraland, Alabama late on the evening of April 22nd, a few days after the Starbucks incident. It’s unclear what happened next but we do know, thanks to another viral video, police were called and Clemons was held down, her breast exposed, officer hands on her neck. It was disgusting. The events that led to the altercation are disputed: Waffle House employees say that Clemons walked in drunk and threatened to “shoot up” the restaurant after being charged $.50 for plastic utensils. However, the employee who called 911 never mentioned the threat to the operator. Clemons’ attorney, Benjamin Crump, says he has witnesses who dispel the employee’s claims. Waffle House and its CEO have stood by the actions of its employees and even taking a step farther by saying they “strongly support the actions taken by the Saraland Police Department” (despite the fact that Waffle House as a business isn’t one with an expertise in law enforcement training so they really don’t have any authority to say what is proper protocol or not). And through it all, the amount of pushback directed at Waffle House has been infinitesimal compared to the amount of action directed at Starbucks. There are marches taking place in Georgia, and proposed boycotts and sit-ins, but not nearly on the level of what we saw at Starbucks, which forced the CEO to speak up. Why? Is it because there were so many vocal white cosigners for the Starbucks incident as opposed to the Waffle House situation? The Starbucks incident was one of those acts of resistance that didn’t inconvenience white people while at the same time allowing many to feel like they are about equality – it’s easy to point the finger at one Starbucks worker for her actions. However, we’ve seen how so many white Americans simply can’t bring themselves to question law enforcement. Is the reluctance because there just never seems to be the same sort of thirst for justice when it comes to black women as for literally any other group of people on this planet? We’ve seen these cases so often of a hesitance or flat-our refusal for anyone to stand up for black women, which the exception of black women themselves. Of course, there’s the fact that the Waffle House situation has more dissenting testimonies than Starbucks. That’s undeniable. But no matter what the narrative is, there’s absolutely no reason for Clemons to have been assaulted as she was. That is also undeniable. So Waffle House going so far as to defend the police actions is a reprehensible enough decision to warrant immediate action, even if you feel they are justified in calling police in the first place.. Sadly, though, when it comes to instances of black women being attacked, there’s always a wait-and-see approach. Stories about wronged black women seem to bring about the “let’s let the facts play out crowd.” The same people who have an understanding of lies and conspiracies to keep black men subjugated are suddenly proponents of the American judicial system, despite its history of terrorizing black communities. Where does that leave the Chikesia Clemonses of the world? The same place it left Korrine Gaines or the endless black women who are victims of R. Kelly’s sexual assaults. Alone, defended by only other black women and a few choice allies. So what side do you fall on? If you spoke up about Starbucks but have been silent about Waffle House, then you need to ask yourself why. And what that means about your ideas of justice for black women. Erica is outside berating the security guards and talking about unleashing the old Erica Mena while Mimi is trying to keep Estelita and Just Brittany from melting down. Erica isn’t officially one of Stevie’s artists, but Stevie wanted her to be part of the Danger Zone dysfunctional family and she’s considering it, especially since there’s a showcase coming up. Later on, Erica apologizes to Mimi and Brittany’s manager, Keely, for her behavior and Keely pulls a snake move by revealing that Just Brittany was extra emotional because it turns out that she’s sleeping with Stevie too. Any good manager would know better than to let some information like this slip, but we know what show this is so whatever. via GIPHY Brittany is not going to be happy when she finds out her cover was blown. Yes, Keely basically delivered us a memo from Captain Obvious with this information, but it was still messed up. Speaking of Keely, she is quite messy boots. Let’s fast forward to Yung Joc’s roast. Keely and Shooter are friends so Keely backs Shooter in feeling some type of way about Sierra because she “didn’t support him” when he was grieving his son. Sierra did show up to the funeral. What else was she supposed to do and why does this trifling man expect anything more after what he has done to her? Anyway, Shooter and Keely run into Tokyo Vanity and Karlie Redd outside the roast and express their displeasure with Sierra. Their discussion gets heated because Tokyo and Karlie are sticking up for their girl, but they disperse before it gets to the point where people fake fight, (because you know Love and Hip-Hop security would never let hands connect). You also know that Karlie Redd and Tokyo go right to Sierra to tell her about this encounter. Next, Kirk’s daughter is on a mission to try to help Kirk get Rasheeda back. She informs him that there was a sexy buff man in Pressed doing some maintenance work and that Rasheeda has been working out with this man too. This makes Kirk think that Rasheeda is open to moving on and that’s all it takes to make him jealous as if he wasn’t capable of this basic logic before cheating on Rasheeda multiple times and fathering a child outside of their marriage. via GIPHY So now he’s on a mission to continue ruining Rasheeda’s life by moving back in the house. Hold that thought. Now let’s get back to Stevie. He invites Estelita to a photo shoot to discuss serious business because this is the perfect place to do so. Estelita is pretending that she’s still pissed off at him for not telling her about his legal issues and not doing enough for her career. However, she quickly forgets once Stevie starts gaming her by telling her she’s his favorite. Estelita tells him he needs to make that clear to Just Brittany and he says he will. That’s all it takes to get her puppet strings back in line. via GIPHY Back to Kirk. This dirty dog rolls up to he and Rasheeda’s home with a moving truck and boxes thinking he’s just going to strong-arm his way back into the house. Rasheeda plays tough at first, and you almost root for her when she tells the movers to keep the boxes in the truck. She also tells Kirk that him moving back in is a decision that they will make together. Kirk starts telling her about how he heard about the sexy man she has been working with and how he misses her. Obviously, they wouldn’t be in this situation if it weren’t for him. But let’s cut to the chase, Rasheeda’s tough act is weak because in the end, she lets him move back in. She talks about missing him and him being the father of her kids, yatta yatta. Whatever. He comes back like he knew he’d be able to. Rasheeda’s stipulations are that he stays on his side of the house and “there will be rules,” despite the fact that she mentioned, earlier in this conversation, that he doesn’t respect her boundaries. via GIPHY How Rasheeda hasn’t managed to stab Kirk by now is amazing. She obviously has a high threshold for disrespect. Anyway, the episode ends with Sierra confronting Shooter about his lies and cheating and he does what you think—deflect and makes it seem like she’s crazy and that these are all just rumors. He only kinda sorta owns up to the two-year-old that he might have. He comes from the Kirk Frost School of Excuses so his answer is, “There’s a girl running around talking ‘bout she could be pregnant by me.” via GIPHY And that’s pretty much where we leave off. It’s also clear that Sierra inexplicably still has feelings for Shooter so we’ll deal with this next week. Sina Rambo is a Nigerian native but has been back and forth from Atlanta to Nigeria where he has been preparing his project, today he released ‘Baba Sina Rambo’ a single featuring Afrobeat Pop Star Olamide. The HKN Gang artist is set to make more appearances in the states this summer but has released this single to keep his fans on edge until his arrival. When spending time with him in the studio while making this song he mentioned: “Shaku Shaku” which to me meant something of a dance vibe. The inaugural season of the groundbreaking Netflix series Dear White People drew viewers in with its timely, frank and funny look at a group of black students on the campus of a predominately white university. Based on the 2014 hit indie film of the same name, season two of the show has just announced a release date and dropped an accompanying teaser trailer. If you are a fan of the Netflix hit Dear White People , (and really who isn’t) you only have a few weeks left before the series’ second season arrives to pick up on all the storylines from last season and offer fresh subject matter that tackles current issues such as the Alt-Right. Entertainment Weekly has a season two synopsis of what fans can expect from the students at Winchester University. Via Entertainment Weekly : ‘Dear White People’ premieres on May 4, Netflix revealed in a new teaser. The sharp satire’s second season picks up in the immediate aftermath of the failed protest that ended season 1 as Sam (Logan Browning), Reggie (Marque Richardson), Troy (Brandon P. Bell), and the other students deal with the repercussions. Whereas season 1 was structured around a racist blackface party that rocked the campus, the new season will be a bit of mystery, creator Justin Simien tells EW. “There’s a lot of secrets to uncover this season, in particular, who is coming after Sam,” says Simien, who previously revealed that a mysterious online troll has targeting Sam in the wake of the protest. “Everyone’s got secrets this season — secrets from each other, secrets from themselves.
