‘Grown-ish’ Teams Up With Scholly App To Pay Off Student Loan Debt

T he Freeform series grown-ish follows the chronicles of students adjusting to life in college and now the show is making the effort to help real-life students. According to Black Enterprise , the show has teamed up with the app Scholly to help students pay off their student loans. @FreeformTV ’s @grownish and scholarship app @MyScholly have partnered up on a program that will pay off up to $125,000 in student loan debt. https://t.co/iZnX9j24kM — Black Enterprise (@blackenterprise) January 3, 2019 The app—which was launched in 2013—was designed to help students find scholarships, the news outlet writes. It was featured on Shark Tank and backed by investors Daymond John and Lori Greiner and subsequently garnered national attention. Cognizant of the burden that student loan debt can have on students, the company has decided to join forces with grown-ish and pay off $125,000 in student loan debt. “Scholly, up until now has focused on helping students avoid student loan debt but, we want to help those who have already amassed a certain amount of student loan debt break free of it,” Scholly founder Chris Gray said in a statement, according to Black Enterprise. “This is just the beginning. Our plan is to do a lot more of these sorts of grants in the near future.” Since its inception, Scholly has helped students across the nation secure $100 million in scholarship money. The winners of the student loan contest will be revealed at the 2019 Freeform Summit. Many companies and institutions have been stepping up to help individuals pay off their student loan debt. Last month Jasmin Ford —a single Black mother from Chicago—had $150,000 of her student loan debt paid off by Fifth Third Bank. After witnessing the impact that the generous act had on Ford, the bank decided to launch a contest similar to grown-ish and Scholly’s. A Lil Positivity: Coachella Is Launching An Initiative Against Sexual Assault & Harassment

Source: Christopher Polk / Getty Coachella Launches An Initiative Against Sexual Harassment Coachella is doing their part to stop sexual harassment, at least on their watch. The California music festival is launching a new initiative called Every One in order to combat sexual harassment and assault at its upcoming events. The  new Every One section  of the Coachella website states the following: “We are pushing ourselves and our guests to do better and to be better. We are taking deliberate steps to develop a festival culture that is safe and inclusive for everyone. Persons of any gender identity or expression, sex, sexual orientation, race, religion, age or ability are welcome at Coachella.” According to reports from The  Los Angeles Times ,  “Trained Safety Ambassadors” will also be on site to “facilitate access to care services for anyone in distress.” “Coachella will NOT tolerate any form of assault or harassment, be it sexual, physical or verbal. Anyone found to be in violation of this policy is subject to immediate removal from the festival site and law enforcement may be notified,” the website continues to state. “Every One tents will be staffed with trained counselors for anyone that needs extra support or a quiet moment away.” Widespread sexual assault at the 2018 festival made headlines, as reported by  Pitchfork , which prompted the creation of Every One in order to not have the same things happen at the festival this year. “Everyone from staff to festival-goer is imperative in co-creating a festival culture that not only keeps everyone safe, but respected and included,” Veline Mojarro, the festival’s Equity, Safety and Inclusion Consultant, told  Pitchfork . Happy New Year! Global Grind is back with episode 24 of The Rewind , the very first episode of the year, and we’re doing what we always do — giving you your much-needed dose of recap reality. Every week we revisit some of the pop culture trends, movies, viral moments and music from the week before and give our hot takes. Our experts Landon Levarius and DJ Franchise share their opinions, sprinkle in some facts and then when it’s all over and done with, provide a rating of 1 to 10. We listen to the songs, watch the movies, scour the internet, and do the hard work so you don’t have to. Without further adieu, let’s jump into this week’s episode. This week DJ Franchise and Landon Levarius discuss Tekashi 6ix9ine’s latest release, Dummy Boy . The debut album was originally slated to drop on November 23, 2018 but when Tekashi was arrested on a slew of felony charges, the release was postponed. However, the album ended up leaking on Tekashi’s website anyway and in a rush to offset the damage being done by the leak, Tekashi’s team released the album on November 27, 2018, four days after its initial release date. Dummy Boy featured the tracks  “Tati” featuring DJ Spinking, “Fefe” featuring Nicki Minaj, “Bebe” featuring Anuel AA and “Stoopid” featuring Bobby Shmurda. It debuted on the US  Billboard  200 with 66,000 album-equivalent units, of which 10,000 were pure album sales. It’s still up for debate whether it was the number one album or if it was number two behind Travis Scott’s Astroworld . DJ Franchise and Landon Levarius weighed in on Tekashi 6ix9ine’s debut effort after giving it about a month to sink in. Did they think it was worth copping? For Landon, not at all. He completely hated the album. For DJ Franchise, it wasn’t too bad. Press play on the video above to see how our guys rate the new album. This week, Franchise and Landon also discuss the new Jay Ellis film “Escape Room”, which hits theaters on January 4. The movie is about six strangers who travel to a mysterious building to take part in an escape room game where they’re asked to solve a series of puzzles to win $1 million. However, things become quite dangerous when what starts out as seemingly innocent fun soon turns into a living nightmare as each room becomes an  elaborate trap that’s part of a sadistic game of life or death.
